What’s AheadMOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament on Wednesday at home against Upper Iowa. Game time is 6 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

The game is part of a women’s/men’s doubleheader that evening as the Dragon men will host Wayne State at 8 p.m.

Both games will be televised live on WDAY’Z Xtra, which is channel 6.3 over the air. The channel can also be found on Midcontinent Communications cable channel 596 and Cable One channel 29. Live stats, live video and live broadcast with Steve d’Eustachio can be found at msumdragons.com.

The Dragons (15-11, 14-8 NSIC) are the No. 2 seed from the NSIC North Division while Upper Iowa (7-19, 5-17 NSIC) is the No. 7 seed from the south division.

MSUM is 9-15 all-time in NSIC tournament games and are one of three teams (Wayne State and Winona State) to qualify for all 16 conference tournaments. MSUM went 0-1 in the tournament a year ago, losing to Augustana 90-79 in the first round. Two years ago MSUM was 1-1 -- beating Sioux Falls 62-50 before losing at Minnesota State, Mankato 75-57.

MSUM is meeting Upper Iowa for a 17th time and holds a 16-0 series lead. Earlier this season the Dragons topped the Peacocks, 71-67 on Jan. 2 in Moorhead. Junior Heather Strese had 24 points and 14 rebounds to lead MSUM while sophomore guard Morgan Banasik had 16 points.

The Dragons split a pair of games on the road last weekend, beating Bemidji State, 67-52 on Friday before losing at Minnesota Crookston, 79-71 on

Saturday. The Dragons were led by junior forward Heather Strese who averaged 19.0 points and 12.5 rebounds for the weekend.

Junior guard Meghan Roehrich leads MSUM at 17.8 points per game while Strese averages 10.9 points and a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game. Sophomore Natalie Van Wyhe averages 4.1 assists per game while sophomore guard Morgan Banasik leads at 1.6 steals per game. As a team MSUM scores 68.3 points per game and shoots 38.6 percent. MSUM outrebounds its foes 41.8-35.3 while allowing 5.9 points per game on defense. Teams shoot 39.3 percent against the Dragons this season.

Karla Nelson is in her 15th season as MSUM’s head coach with a record of 255-170 at the school.

About Upper IowaThe Peacocks are 7-19 overall and finished 5-17 in the NSIC after losing to Augustana (61-44) and Wayne State (66-52) at home last weekend. Upper Iowa has lost five of its last six games entering Wednesday’s clash with the Dragons.

Senior forward Lauren Buck is having a strong year for Upper Iowa, averaging 14.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. She has 16 double-doubles, tops in the NSIC. Lindsay Carroll averages 13.3 points per game while Olivia Winkler averages 11.7 points per game and leads the conference in field goal percentage (.541). Carroll leads with 3.3 assists per game. As a team Upper Iowa scores 65.7 points per game and shoots 38.9 percent from the field.

On defense Upper Iowa surrenders 75.3 points per game and teams are shooting 44.3 against the Peacocks this season.

Carol Russell is in her fifth season as Upper Iowa’s head coach with a record of 23-112 at the school.

•MSUM sophomore point guard Natalie Van Wyhe is now second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio at 2.1, which is also 22th-best in the nation. She has 102 assists compared to 49 turnovers in 25 games played this season. Van Wyhe also ranks third in the conference at 4.1 assists per

game. Over the Dragons’ last 16 games, Van Wyhe has averaged 4.9assists per game. Van Wyhe had a career-high nine assists in the Dragons’ win over Mary in December and has nine games of five assists or more already this season. She scored a career-high 16 points at Minnesota Crookston on Saturday.

•Junior Heather Strese, left, recorded her team-best fourth double-double of the 2014-15 season with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in MSUM’s 67-52 win at Bemidji State on Feb. 20. The 16 rebounds are the most by a Dragon women’s player this

season. MSUM has 10 double-doubles on the season with four different players earning at least two. Having four play-ers with double doubles is tied for third in the NSIC behind Concordia and Minnesota Crookston with five each. Strese leads MSUM with four double-doubles while junior forward Savanna Handevidt, sophomore guard Morgan Banasik and redshirt freshman Drew Sannes have two apiece. Strese has five double-digit rebound games this season while Ba-nasik and Handevidt have three apiece.

• MSUM is ranked second in the NSIC in free-throw percentage at 77.4 percent per game, which also ranks the Dragons 12th in all of Division II and third in the NSIC. MSUM hit 28-of-37 attempts (75.8 percent) on the road to continue that effectiveness at the foul line.

Four Dragon starters are shooting 72 percent or better at the line, led by sophomore guards Natalie Van Wyhe at 86.8 percent and Morgan Banasik at 84.9 percent and followed by senior Meghan Roehrich, pictured left, at 79.3 percent and junior Heather Strese at 71.3 percent. As a team the Dragons have shot 80 percent or better from the free throw line in 12 games this season. MSUM has hit 415-536 attempts on the season while their opponents have converted 314-of-429 attempts on the year. The Dragons were third in the nation in free-throw percentage in 2013-14.

COACHING BIOThe 2014-15 season will be Karla Nelson’s 15th as head coach of the Minnesota State University Moorhead women’s basketball team. During her 14 years as head coach, MSUM has been a model of consistent success.

Nelson has 14 straight winning seasons as MSUM’s mentor. The Dragons have qualified for the conference tournament for 15 consecutive years -- having never missed a conference tournament -- including in all 14 years of Nelson’s tenure. The fastest coach in MSU Moorhead basketball history to reach the 200-win plateau, Nelson has accumulated a record of 240-159 in 14 seasons.

Also included in the success are three trips to the NCAA Division II post-season play, two national statistical titles, conference and region Coach of the Year endorsements and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship. Nelson is fourth among NSIC coaches in total wins at their respective schools.

Nelson has also coached 32 all-conference honorees in 14 seasons. She led Angie Jetvig to four All-American teams including two consecutive Daktronics All-American honors in 2011 and 2012. Nelson also helped Megan Rettke and Alison Nash-Gerlach to second team Daktronics All-American honors in 2010.

In 2013-14, MSUM finished 16-11, highlighted by wins over regional qualifiers Wayne State (ranked No. 8 at the time) and Concordia-St. Paul. Zabel was named to the All-NSIC first team while senior forward Megan Strese was named to the All-NSIC second team. Both players surpassed 1,000 points for their careers during the season; Strese left MSUM ranked 11th all-time in scoring at 1,228 points while Zabel finished in 15th at 1,115 points. Senior guard Haley Thomforde also finished her career fifth in assists under Nelson’s tutelage.

The 2012-13 season saw a young Dragon team with just two seniors earn a 16-12 mark and a first-round win in the NSIC tournament. MSUM also earned a win over No. 17-ranked Augustana, which ended up qualifying for the NCAA Division II Final Four. Also in 2012-13, senior Marisa Yernatich set the new career three-point record at MSUM, while junior Megan Strese earned first-team All-NSIC honors. Zabel was an All-NSIC second-team selection.

The first coach at MSUM to debut with back-to-back winning campaigns, Nelson and the Dragons made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II North Central Regional in 2004-05, returned in 2006-07, and qualified for a third time in 2008-09.

The 2006-07 team reached the 20-win plateau for the fifth time in program history and made a serious run for the NSIC title, placing second in the league tournament and suffered an NCAA Tournament opening round loss to the University of North Dakota.

In 2008-09, the Dragons were ranked as high as 13th in the nation, after going on an 11-0 run to open the season. The season ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, after picking up the first post-season win in program history. Nelson prodded her first club to a 15-12 overall record in 2000-01, the first winning season at MSUM in six years that also included a NSIC playoff invitation. In 2004-05 Nelson and the Dragons claimed their first NSIC outright title, cracked the nation’s Top-25 for the first time and received a NCAA Division II regional tournament invitation, the first time in the Head Coach’s career. MSUM finished 24-7 overall and set a Dragon single season record victories. Nelson was saluted as the NSIC Coach of the Year and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Region 7 Coach of the Year as well. The WBCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honor was her second, the first coming during the 2002-03 season.

Nelson served six seasons as the Dragons’ No. 1 assistant from 1994-2000. When Jean Roise resigned in March of 2000, MSUM Director of Athletics Dr. Katy Wilson quickly promoted Nelson to the top post..

A recreation major, Nelson completed an undergraduate degree from North Dakota and a Master’s Degree from North Dakota State University in Health Education. Nelson was a member of the coaching staff at East Grand Forks and Grand Forks Public Schools for three years before moving to MSUM.
