Physical Education Defined

Students will be provided an individualized, developmentally appropriate, and personally challenging instructional program that will advance the knowledge, confidence, skills, and motivation needed to engage in a lifelong, healthy, active lifestyle.

The Physical Education Program at the elementary level provides 5 required themes which include Basic Movement, Dance & Rhythms, Manipulatives, Ball Handling and Fitness using the Fitnessgram assessments for Grades 4 & 5. Supplemental themes include Track & Field, Climbing Wall, Orienteering, and Hoops to name a few.

Why ALL students can succeed!

Variety, variety, and more variety... 36 unique unit themes ranging from parachute activities to traversing our 44' rock

wall!

Differentiated instruction within each of the 35 units. Sameness DOES NOT create equality!!!

Rigorous – I recognize individual differences and set goals based on a student's particular capabilities

Relevant – I provide more problems rather than more challenging problems

Flexible – Student choice: how they will learn, how they will show what they've learned, topic selection, and will they work independently, with a partner, or in a team

Complex – I challenge students' thinking and actively engage them in content that conveys depth and breadth

Within Each Lesson

Content We concentrate on the most relevant and essential concepts, processes, and skills

Process I add greater complexity or abstractness to tasks, by engaging students in critical and creative

thinking, or by increasing the ways in which I ask students to learn

Product The end result or learning is reached by student choice that matches their learning strengths

Technology in the Gym

Presenter – We broadcast electronic media and turn the block wall into a digital screen

Nintendo Wii – Students use motion sensing technology to translate real body movements into an electronic display

FlipCam – Students receive instant visual feedback after viewing a digital recording of their actions

FitnessGram Software – After entering a series of scores into the program, students view a detail report of all necessary fitness components
