Mossley Hollins High School Newsflash 7
Friday 18th October 2019
Headteacher’s Message
As we reach the end of a busy half term, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic start our new year
7 cohort, our class of 2024, have made to their time at Mossley Hollins High School. Under the guidance of their
Head of Year Miss Allwood, and Senior Leader Mr Beardmore, this exceptional group of young people have proudly
displayed the Mossley Hollins Way in lessons and around school every single day. Despite a slow start for some in
terms of personal organisation and homework submissions (this is now much improved I am pleased to say), I am
delighted to hear from Form Mentors that there has not been a single NUHOPE sanction given to any member of this
year group for answering back to staff since they started with us. In terms of focus in lessons, there have been only
four NUHOPE sanctions for off task behaviour in all that time.
To put that into perspective, that is only four times when staff have had to issue after school reminders to students
for being off task in seven weeks of school. That is 26 lessons each week for 182 children- almost 33,000 pupil
lessons in total. Furthermore, this fabulous group of learners have received a grand total of 5571 PRIDE points
already.
In terms of attendance, I am also delighted to report that year 7 have the highest total in school with a total of 98.5%
attendance so far this year.
I am so proud of our newest students and the way they have quickly risen to our high expectations. I know from the
outstanding learning habits they have demonstrated so far that they are going to go far.
Thank you so much to all families, parents and carers for your fantastic support for these remarkable young people.
Parking on site
Thank you for all the messages of support we have received following my message about parking on site. Due to the
seriousness of this issue, I have taken steps to ensure that the parking restrictions on site are adhered to. I cannot
allow the thoughtless or selfish actions of a small number of individuals to risk harm or injury to our children. Please
do not park or wait on any of the areas marked with double yellow lines.
Please note, from November 4th 2019 there will be parking enforcement officials on site who will intervene
directly with the owners of vehicles parked illegally on site.
Please share this important message with any family members or friends who might collect children on your behalf.
Thank you for your consideration in this serious matter.
Have a great weekend.
Mr Marshall
Buckton Vale Primary French Day
On Tuesday, 15th October, Mr. Stevens took twelve Year 8 students to Buckton
Vale Primary School to teach French. In pairs, Mossley Hollins students taught a
range of topics in French to Year 3 and Year 4 students. They taught their lesson six
times throughout the day and enjoyed playing games and sharing their linguistic
knowledge of French food, colours, family, school subjects, months and animals.
The staff at Buckton Vale were very impressed by the enthusiasm, knowledge and
teaching skills of our students. Mr. Stevens would like to thank the Y8 students
below for their participation and for representing the school so wonderfully.
After the event, the MFL faculty received
a lovely ‘Thank You’ message from
Buckton Vale:
‘I just want to say thank you, what a
fantastic morning of inspiring, engaging
activities that you and your students
arranged for us today. Everyone had
clearly worked incredibly hard and put
lots of thought and effort into the
activities. All our students and staff said
what a great morning they all had.
Mossley Hollins
certainly promoted the
love of languages for us
today. The range of
activities kept the
children focused and
challenged in a fun and
inspiring way. All the
Mossley Hollins
students were fantastic
role models and
certainly engaged all
our children. Please
pass on our thanks to all
involved. Thank you as
well to the staff as
events such as this
happen due to their
time and effort which
goes into the
preparation.’

Calling all Keen Readers in Year 8
The English Department would like to invite all committed and avid readers to a new book group that will be starting
after half term. The group will be an exciting opportunity to share your love of books, by reading a shared fiction
text, then having weekly discussions and debates about the characters and themes being explored. More
information will follow next week!
Redgrave College (Year 7) – The Character Pillars
Mr Frost launched the new ‘Character
Pillar’ scheme in Year 7 assembly on
Monday. As we near the end of half term
one, we can see that our Year 7 students
have settled well into secondary school life.
The Character Pillars is a scheme that gives
our students the opportunity to start to
evidence their character development
throughout the year.
To achieve the "Apprentice" level, students
will need to complete three objectives
from the criteria. Examples of objectives
were presented to students in their
assembly. Each week in form time on a
Monday, students will be reminded of the
opportunities that would count towards
their objectives.
Mr Frost was on hand on Thursday's Year 7
Settling in Evening to answer any questions
parents/pupils had. Please do not hesitate
to contact Mr Frost if you have any further
questions.
This Week in Life Skills
During form time next week, students in all year groups will be given a current affairs issue to consider and discuss.
Year 7 will be given further information about the ‘Step into the NHS’ competition. The new Life Skills topics will
begin after half term and will cover the following issues:
Year 7 – ‘Step into the NHS’ competition (more information included later on in the Newsflash)
Year 8 – Online safety and digital literacy
Year 9 – Managing peer pressure and illicit substance
Year 10 – Managing relationships
Year 11 – Coping with stress and promoting self-esteem
If you have any enquiries about the Life Skills curriculum, please contact Mrs. Rebecca Harrison at
KS4 Drama Students Macbeth Theatre Visit
On Wednesday, 16th October, the Year 9, 10 and 11
drama students visited The Royal Exchange Theatre in
Manchester to watch William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
The play was exhilarating with clever uses of lighting,
staging, sound and special effects, engaging all of our
pupils. With a brave twist the character of Macbeth
was performed by the talented Lucy Ellinson, bringing
a sense of determination, comedy and desperation to
one of Shakespeare’s most well known characters.
The students conducted themselves with pride,
maturity and professionalism in the theatre and were
a perfect representation of the ‘Mossley Hollins Way’,
in spite of the detour taken by the coach.
I would like to thank the staff who supported on the trip and the
parents/carers who patiently waited to collect their children.
Lost Property
Do you recognise anything in this photograph? We have collected a large amount of lost property. If your child has
lost a coat, or other item, please ask them to check at Reception in case it has been handed in. Any unclaimed lost
property will be taken to a charity shop on Friday, 25th October 2019, as we cannot store it indefinitely.
Redgrave College (Year 7) – ‘Step into the NHS’ Competition
Next half term, Year 7 Life Skills will be focused on creating entries to the ‘Step into the NHS’ competition as part of
our Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) programme. During form time, students will be
given information about a variety of job roles available in the NHS and they will be asked to select one job role to
base their competition entry on. Their entry will involve writing a job description outlining the qualifications,
experience and skills needed to effectively carry out that job and an advert for the same job. Students may be asked
to research some NHS careers at home in order to assist them with their competition entry.
The deadline for competition entries is Friday, 10th January 2020 at 3pm. Mrs. Harrison is already looking forward to
seeing all the fantastic entries that Year 7 will create. There are also some exciting prizes for the winners of the
competition. Overall, national winners will each get £50 of Amazon vouchers and a class trip to a local science
venue! Ten regional winners will also receive £25 of Amazon vouchers each!
For further information regarding the competition, please visit the following link:
https://www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk/secondary-schools or contact Mrs. Harrison at school.
JASS (Junior Award Scheme for Schools) - Praise from Mr Marshall
“I was privileged to be invited to the JASS Silver Award ceremony on Tuesday, 1st October 2019, to share in
celebrating the outstanding achievements of all the Year 8 pupils who have dedicated their time and effort to this
important extra-curricular award. Twenty-two students participated, with a phenomenal seventeen completing the
full award. The skills and experiences these students will take away with them will set them up well for the JASS Gold
Award, all Duke of Edinburgh Awards and their own academic and extra-curricular endeavours.
I would also like to take this time to thank Miss Hodgkins and Mr Beaumont for their guidance and expertise, as well
as each parent, carer and community leader who has assisted these students in each aspect of the JASS Award.”
Year 7 and Year 8 students keen to complete the Silver or Gold JASS Award should keep an eye out for
communications coming home on how to apply and continue their JASS journey!

MCSP Primary School Football On Wednesday night, the MCSP football tournament took place at
Mossley Hollins High School. A number of Year 5 and 6 boys and
girls from all six feeder primary schools took part in the fantastic
event. The games were played in excellent spirit and the level of
footballing ability and skill displayed on the night is something that
all pupils should be very proud of.
Congratulations to all pupils for participating in the event but special
credit should go to two teams. St Joseph’s won the award for
outstanding teamwork and Buckton Vale were crowned the winners and the Football Champions in 2019.
There were four pupils from Year 10 and 11 who helped to organise and officiate the games. They were praised for
their maturity and attitude by the members of staff from the primary schools and should be very proud of
themselves for leading a fantastic event. Thank you: to Holly McAllister, Kristina Kacurova, Marina Dote and Bethany
Jones.
News from the PE Department
Year 8 Football
On Wednesday night, the Year 8 football team played in a friendly against St Damians. The boys put in a hardworking
performance on the night but despite their best efforts, they lost the game 6-2. Unfortunately, the boys did not have
a goalkeeper for the game, so Jacob Burns and Keano Wassall volunteered to be goalkeepers for a half each. The two
goalkeepers scored the two goals in the game when they played outfield, which demonstrated what valuable
members of the team they are.
Congratulations and well done to: Keano Wassall, Jacob Burns, Daniel Curran, Celestin Oprea, Ryan Lewis, Isaac
Herod, Alastair Robinson, Luke Varey, Jacob Tohill, Owen Lomax, Charlie Bingley and Joel Andrews.
