In this weeks’ Issue
Manchester Pretty Muddy 5K – Saturday 16 October 2021
‘Team Mossley Hollins’ is taking part in the Manchester Pretty Muddy 5K on
Saturday 16th October at Heaton Park, Prestwich, Manchester. We are taking part
in this in memory of Diane Kershaw and George Butterworth. The ‘Race for Life
Pretty Muddy’ is a brilliant 5K muddy obstacle course. You scramble over A-frames,
crawl through mud pits, tackle large inflatables and have real good fun. Most
importantly it raises valuable funds for Cancer Research UK.
We currently have 17 staff members signed up to take part in the event who have so far raised an amazing
£1,635.00. Well done to the following members of staff:
Mrs Din, Mrs Harker, Mrs Beardmore, Ms Upton, Mrs Duggan, Mrs Walch, Mrs Milburn, Mrs Duncan, Miss Fogg
Miss Hadfield, Miss Marin, Mrs Baulk, Mrs Burns, Miss Hodgkins, Miss Walton, Mrs Dodd, Mrs Bradwell.
If you would like to contribute to such a good cause (any contributions will be greatly appreciated, even the smallest
donation can make a big difference), you can donate to our Team Giving Page here.

Service Character Pillar: Volunteer Opportunities
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”
Do you need to achieve your Apprentice Service badge? One of the criteria for Apprentice
Service is:
Volunteer ten hours of your time to support others (a charity, a parent, another student etc).
Why not collect a volunteer card From Mrs Ryan or Ms Baulk?
You could add volunteer activities that you do at home such as helping your parents with younger siblings or any
volunteer work you do in the community.
Congratulations to students who have already taken up volunteer activities. Mrs Beardmore worked with two
volunteers this week:
“It was such a pleasure having help from
two Year 7 pupils (Cathrine Donnely &
Cody Tevlin, Form 7L) who assisted in the
planting of the school autumn tubs. The
girls were both eager and had a really
positive approach to selecting plants and
creating their own beautiful
arrangements with the autumnal plants
that will take us through to next spring.
In addition to this both girls have offered
more of their own time to keep a keen
eye on the tubs, watering and tending
the plants throughout the autumn and
spring terms. Such a credit to Year 7 -
thank you girls for all your help.”

See Mrs Ryan for more details.

Remembrance Service. If your child belongs to such a group your child’s form mentor will
have hopefully passed their names on to Mr. Beardmore. Please do ask your child to check
with their form mentor that their names have been passed on. Any concerns that your
child’s name has been missed off, please pass onto Mr Beardmore.
Once all names are taken preparations can begin for the ceremony in November.

for a two year term of office.
John Denton, Chair of Governors
Co-Curricular Events at Mossley Hollins At Mossley Hollins we value the development of positive character traits as much as we value academic
development. Our co-curricular activities, which take place outside of the classroom complement classroom
learning, including a range of sporting, performing arts and enrichment activities. We do not see these activities as
‘extra’ and students who involve themselves in the full range of activities and opportunities do tend to perform
better academically.
Now that Covid restrictions have eased, we are in a position to offer a much wider range of opportunities for our
students, please see below for the current list of co-curricular activities we have on offer. We strongly value our co-
curricular offer and know this can make a significant impact on the development of the whole child. Please do
encorrage your child to get involved in these activities.
The increased number and wider diversity of our enrichment activities gives all students the opportunity to
participate in the programme and experience something(s) that they may continue to take part in well beyond
Secondary School.
Every faculty offers enrichment experiences for our students to experience. Many of these are new to our
programme. We are proud that all new staff that joined us in September 2021 are part of our programme.
Students have missed out so much on activities recently and as a school we want all our students to make up for this
by accessing this new exciting programme.

Faculty Focus: Science
Science News Year 10 have been looking at different types of bonding in science.
Here our models of covalent bonds using pipe cleaners and beads!.
The pipe cleaners show the shells and the beads represent the
electrons. The atoms must share the electrons
to gain full outer shells and become stable, this
can be seen by the beads on the overlapping
sections.
Year 8 have been looking at different drugs and the effects on the body. As part of the Learning Character Pillar,
students had to design a poster, leaflet or video to be used in school. Students were very creative
and completed some amazing work. Students working fantastically in their groups and they should
be very proud of the work that was produced.
Amazing Science Opportunity We would like to promote an opportunity for scientists, which runs outside of regular school hours.
DoctorsLive, is a team of doctors passionate about inspiring the next generation of students to pursue a career in
Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Allied Health Professions. They run a weekly interactive anatomy club covering live
virtual dissections of the human body, discussing how the systems of the body work and what could go wrong.
Their next anatomy club begins in November 2021. The sessions are described as ‘fun, interactive, and accessed
online from the comfort of the students' home’. Each session will cover an organ system and delve into:
1. How the organ system works
2. What could go wrong
3. Live virtual operations
4. Live practical examinations
5. Reviewing anonymised real-life cases and scans
The sessions are perfect for any student aged 14+ interested in a career in healthcare. Certificates will be provided
for participation and can be used as evidence of virtual work experience.
Our sessions run live every Thursday from 6pm until 8pm, covering a new system each week. The complete

Maths News Cryptography Club - Year 7, 8 and 9.
This week we took a look at one of the most famous ciphers from History - the
Caesar Cipher. Made famous by the Emperor Julius Caesar.
The students also created their own cipher wheels to take home and use to create secret
messages.
In the Curriculum
Year 7 - Tasks for home.
As the world embraces more and more technology, the idea of being able
to tell the time yourself has become increasingly less important - we can all just ask our smart
devices what time it is.
We must always think - what if the technology wasn't there? What if I needed to catch a bus and all
I have is a watch and a timetable? These are fundamental skills that EVERYONE should be equipped
with.
We will be starting to cover the topic of time in lessons and providing as many real-life situations as we can to
support their learning. But this is where actually experiencing something in the real world will massively support
their understanding.
So at home;
• get involved in the cooking of a meal: how long should it take? When should it be ready?
• Plan backwards: If the bus is at 8:15am and it takes you 25 minutes to get ready, 10 minutes to eat breakfast
and 10 minutes to get to the bus stop, what is the latest time you will need
to wake up?
• Look at the running time of TV shows or films and plan your evening
around when you want to eat, watch the film and go to bed.
• If Strictly is on at 8pm and you're eating your tea at 5:30pm and it takes
you 20 minutes, how long will you need to wait before the show starts.
Could you fit in some other tasks that are 20 minutes each? How many?

International Partnership
Mr Stevens has been working with a
group of Y9 students to create a
partnership with a school in Nigeria called
Usra Academy through the British Council.
To initiate our partnership, students have
created videos to share information about
life at Mossley Hollins. We are looking forward to continuing with
our international school partnership with a focus on SDGs
(Sustainable Development Goals). Thank you to Louise Bailey,
Holly Dewsnap, Lucy Nolan, Eva Albiston, Dean Bottomley, Alex
Kirk, Josh Dawson and Ava O’Connell for their excellent participation.
Spanish Film Club The MHHS Spanish Film Club has started this half term and we have lots of Y7 and Y8 members already.
Currently we are watching ‘El Libro de la Vida’ which some of the students had already seen! Over the
next few weeks we are going to watch the end of the film. Look out for our reviews in future editions of
the Newsflash.
If you would like to participate in Spanish Film Club we will be recruiting new members for our next film at the end of
this half term. Please speak to Mr Stevens or Mr Taylor.

Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien.
This term’s choice of book takes us on an adventure to Middle Earth as we encounter

novel. One usually ‘stay-at-home’ Hobbit is forced into an adventure that will change
his life but how will he manage?

Redgrave College (PE & Performing Arts Faculty & Year 7)
Year 7 Baseline tests All year 7 students will be sitting 3 baseline assessments during the weeks beginning 11th and 18th October. There
will be one for English and two for Maths. These will be completed online. They will sit the first Maths assessment
during their Computer Science lesson next week and then the English and second Maths tests will take place during
their normal lessons the following week. These are not tests that the students need to prepare or revise for. The
tests are designed to give us the vital information about your child that we did not receive when their SATS were
cancelled in year 6. They will provide teachers with information to better support pupils and plan an effective
curriculum by giving us a detailed breakdown to ensure ‘strengths and weaknesses’ are clear and can be addressed.
We thank you in advance for your support with this.
Drama News GCSE Drama Performances
Congratulations to Drama students in Yr. 11 who have now completed their collaborative group devised drama

School Expectations
Equipment
Students who wish to succeed at our school always bring the right equipment for the right lessons each day.
Students do not need to bring all of their books but should select the right ones the previous evening. Students must
bring to school: pencil case; the 2ps and 2Rs (pen, pencil, ruler & rubber); their planner; DEAR-reader; Correct
coloured lanyard; the books and folders for that day; their PE kit when they have PE and a scientific calculator.
Punctuality
We would like to remind everyone of the importance of arriving to school promptly each morning. Should you child
arrive later, they must enter through pupil reception by crossing the bridge. This applies to students in all year
groups.
Uniform
School Shoes We would like to remind parents and students of the footwear, which will be deemed acceptable and
unacceptable. Footwear must not resemble trainers and shoes manufactured by sportswear companies will not be
allowed. Canvas or leather converse/vans style pumps will not be allowed, nor will any footwear that covers the
ankle. Please be aware that some companies market shoes as school shoes but in fact, they are not acceptable as
they have logos and/or trainer like soles. Other shops, such as Clarks have also begun to design their school shoes to
look like trainers. Shoes must be all black including the stitching, sole and trim. Logos of any kind are not acceptable,
including Kickers. If students arrive in school with inappropriate shoes, they will not be permitted into lessons.
Please help to avoid any issues by ensuring that the uniform policy is adhered to.
