No time for the new Board to settle in January! We started this year off with a bang! Four new member-ships were approved at our January board meeting. If you see Richard and Alaine Steuk, Dennis and Kerry Bailey, Chris and Suzanne Christenson, or Chanel Channing around the club, be sure to give them a warm welcome to our wonderful club! Well, we had a busy January board meeting. The Long Range Planning committee will be meeting soon to discuss the deteriorating piling situa-tion, among other things. Our new Bar Stewards, Stanley and Susan Craig, hit the ground running this year with new ideas on how to increase the fun and variety at the bar. While they understand that this club is primarily a sailing club, they also understand that sailors like to drink! FROM YOUR VICE COMMODORE - John Kincade

. In my first month on the job, I have found out that the Vice Commodore has all kinds of glamorous things to do. The first was to remove the Christmas tree and cut it up to fit into the dumpster. Then sweep up all the needles. Then take down all of the decorations. Then fixing a couple of broken door handles. I'm sure there will be a bathroom project in the future too!! It looks like this is going to be much more fun that I ever imagined. Keys: We are running into a shortage of keys, the ones you all have that open the boatyard and storage shed. These

are the large brass 'high security' keys that have blanks that cannot be pur-chased but must be supplied by a locksmith with a contract with 'U.S. Lock', the maker of the specialized blanks. Since we can no longer find a locksmith who does this anymore, this has become a problem. I know many members will never use the boatyard or storage shed, or your spouse has a key that is not used, so I am asking if you could please return

your keys to the yacht club, either drop them in the mailbox outside the office or give them to any club officer. Your help will be much appreciated.

Outboard Motors: There are several outboard motors in the storage shed. With the excep-tion of the 2hp Nissan, I do not know who the owners are. If you have a motor in the shed, please let me know so I can tag it with your name. If they are not identified by the time the Pirates Booty rolls around, they will be consid-ered abandoned and be put up for sale. Work Day: Coming up March 29 is our annual Work Day. This is your opportunity to help make our club shine and sparkle. So add the date to your calendar, it is always a fun day. And it doesn't need to be a full day commitment, if you can spare a couple hours, it will make a big difference. If you see anything around the club that you think could be cleaned, painted or fixed, let me know and I will put it on the list. Your Vice Commodore at your service, John Kincade

What a great trip we had on Jan. 16th. It was so hot that I thought about taking off my shirt but someone said I might scare the seagulls. This was the first time I could remember that we had more men than women. On Tues. Feb.18th at 10:30 we are going to paddle to Bayside Cafe for lunch. If you don't want to paddle then drive down and have lunch with us. Your slightly sunburned, G.P.P.

FUN FLOAT Tuesday, February 18th at 10:30 a.m.

FROM YOUR REAR COMMODORE—Todd Hansen

As promised John Michener and I have been working and testing various options for sharing race results on the club website. Just when we think we have it solved another platform would not display the information. John has the results posted on the Clubs web page under Fleets on the main banner. They work great is you are logged in as a Gmail account user, its hit and miss if you are not.

The first event of 2014 was the Hangover Race held New Year’s Day. Having participated in the Calendaring meeting for this year’s races I was forewarned that the currents were going to be a challenge. I just hoped we had enough wind to cope with the currents induced by an 8 foot drop in the bay. And we did, sometimes. Sometimes the wind would tease us and then die off in the middle of the start sequence. Thankfully Keiran and Rory raised to postponement flag before we were sucked too far out the bay and we could break out the paddle and stroke like mad to get back to the dock. Only one boat had to be towed back to the dock all day. Gwenn Krossa’s song “Sailing Backwards on the Bay” kept running through my head. Dur-ing the postponements, the racers amused themselves with a few rounds of hangman. For a video treatment of the day’s happenings check out the video put together by Keiley Hansen and posted on the Club’s home page. For the results – check out the web page.

The first Ocean Fleet race of the year was cancelled due to predicted large swells and low winds. Ac-cording to one source the predicted conditions did not appear and a nice day on the water was missed. Another source told me the Coast Guard stopped by the Club and was relieved to hear the races were cancelled. You never can tell what the conditions will be until the time of the event, and even then they can change.

What’s in a Name

Consider the three wine labels above. They contain three very different names, Sangiovese, Chianti, and Montaga-Mare. The first two names imply a medium body red, but the names themselves, and their country of origin, can tell us a great deal more. All above are California wines. The first name, Sangiovese, tells us the most. Sangiovese is a specific variety of grape, see the varietal summary table below, and thus is a varietal name. For American wines, a varietal name ensures the wine must contain at least 75% by volume of that variety grape. The second name, Chianti, is a region of Italy in central Tuscany. The name Chianti on a wine from the Chianti Region must be 80% Sangiovese, but when found on an American wine, like Cribari, is an example of a generic name and the grapes can be a blend of anything. Generic names are often for-eign places or have foreign connotations and are generally bulk wines (think central valley). California Chablis is another example of a generic. The name Chablis on a wine from the Burgundy Region of France will be 100% Chardonnay, but Cal-ifornia Chablis can be anything. What about Montaga-Mare, which is Italian for Mountain-Sea? This is an example of a branded name which again doesn’t tell us anything about the variety of grapes. However, branded names are generally found on higher end wines and the label, unlike generics, usually provides additional information. In this case, we see that Opolo’s Montaga-Mare is 60% Sangiovese and 40% Barbera. Rich Leamon, MBYC Sommelier I wonder what grapes are in Toby’s Chateau Le Cacheflo

What does the game of hangman have to do with sailing? The MBYC Juniors served as PRO (Principal Race Officer) for the 2014 Hangover Regatta and pulled the fleet through an early period of still air with a rousing white-board game. The Bay fleet went on to enjoy a well run if low wind event. Thanks to Rory, Keiran, Shannon, Audry, Don and Kit Lockwood for helping out. Thanks to Keiley Hansen, highlights (including backward sailing [It's not just for Optis]), are available on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_WYMvYIkwos.

The first Juniors day of 2014 is scheduled for January 26th with the next two on February 9th and 23rd. Out of town regattas begin to pick up in February with the Carrie Opti #4 on February 8th, and 9th at Los Angeles Y acht Club (LAY C). February 9th is also the date of the first race in the 2014 San Luis Y acht Club Lopez cup at Lopez Lake. February 15th and 16th is the SCYA Midwinter Regatta at Newport Harbor Yacht Club.

Junior members in good standing with signed boat liability papers may borrow boats for out of town regattas, and I believe several Opti sailors will be attending the LAYC race. Some Laser sailors may be attending the Newport Yacht Club race. In the past the Lopez Lake Cup has provided the chance for Optis and Lasers to race in a mixed fleet in protected water. The March 9th race Lopez Cup race at Santa Margarita Lake might serve as a warm-up for the Big Rock at the end of March.
