During the first week of St. Gianna Health Academy we received a tour of St. Francis and St. Joseph hospitals. We learned about the rules and guidelines regarding the Health Academy and Via Christi Hospital. We were visited by Misty Marley from the Volunteer Service, Vee Cox from Health Prevention, Kim from Hospital Education, Officer Dick from Security, and Laurie Labarca from Administration. They explained what is expected from us during the semester. We learned about where we are expected to park, too. We had a Tuberculosis shot as well. We also went down the hall to take pictures for our badges so that we could sign in before our rotations and so that we would be recognized as students in the hospital. We are also taking a Medical Terminology class at Newman University. We went to Newman to go over the syllabus and discuss college credit for the course. We learned about the tests we will be taking and received our books for the class.

• After every rotation we were required to blog about our experience. We could blog about what we learned and saw during our rotation. We also said if we enjoyed the rotation and if we would like to work there in the future. After we explained our rotation we commented on other students blogs as well. We were able to conveniently communicate with each other about how our rotations went.

We prepared hand washing presentations to perform to young children at their schools. We made posters, skits, coloring worksheets, and songs to teach the children how to wash their hands. To show the children the danger of germs we used a black light box and “germ lotion”. All the children could see the germs on their hands under the black light. We took them to wash their hands and then put their hands back under the black light. They were all amazed the germs were gone. At the end of our presentations we gave each child a toothbrush and soap to keep their hands and teeth clean. It was rewarding to see that we could provide valuable information in a fun way.

St. Gianna Health Academy has been a great learning experience. It has been a major influence on my outlook on health care. Through this opportunity I feel that I have strengthened knowledge and understanding of the medical field. I am grateful for being able to observe first hand in all the different units of the hospital. It was very exciting to get to see what all health care professionals go through on a regular basis. I feel very fortunate to have been able to be apart of this program. I will take the information provided to me throughout this program to exceed in a medical career in my future. I really enjoyed this semester!
