From Our President 2018
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE;
I think it’s safe to say that living in Arizona, especially this past winter was a blessing. When I spoke with my friend in Chicago, she told me that it was 14 below, however, when the weatherman said that the fol-lowing day, temperatures would rise to Zero she was so excited. It’s all relative!
I can tell you that Beth Emeth had a wonderful month. Member-ship rose, sisterhood had a successful lunch and game day, the 13th an-nual film festival was a huge success, the attendance for Friday night and Saturday services is on the rise, our parking lot fund has grown, and the celebration for Max Gimpel’s 100th birthday was spectacular.
As we look down the road, we plan on having a Purim Schpeel, Sis-terhoods’ homemade hamantashen, Yom Hashoah memorial is already in the works, Passover Seder, Sunday get togethers, paint day (which is so much fun), and many other events are being planned.
We need all of us to be emissaries to go out and make people aware that we are here. Invite them to our services, lectures, and func-tions. It’s very easy to say, I can’t, or it’s not me to talk about the shul to others. I understand, I would like you to try It once.
So, as I always say, walk in to our home, enjoy the beauty that surrounds us, and be positive. You will be surprised, what being posi-tive can do.
Shalom,
Marilyn Newberg, President.

The Masks We Wear
The holiday of Purim reminds us that things are not always what they seem. In the Megillah, what
appears on the surface is proven to be different in reality. The king, Achashverosh, is the most pow-
erful ruler of his time in the ancient world, presiding over 127 provinces. Yet, the story portrays him
as a drunken fool, who can’t even control his own wife. And when she refuses to obey him, he has to
consult with all seven of his advisors to figure out what to do.
Esther (whose very name means “I will hide”) is portrayed as this docile, obedient, and naive young
woman, who obeys her cousin, Mordechai; who obeys the officer in charge of preparing the beauty
queen candidates; who scrupulously does what everyone else tells her. Yet, when the fate of her
whole people is at stake, she rises above her natural inclinations, and asserts control, using the
weaknesses of both the king and Haman to finally pit them against each other in order to save her
people.
This idea of hiding and revealing is highlighted within our celebration of the holiday. While in mod-
ern times, we tend to think of Purim as a great holiday for children, the Jewish “Halloween,” wearing
costumes for Purim started in medieval Italy as a very adult activity. The Jewish community of Ven-
ice was renowned in the 15th & 16th centuries for their elaborate Purim plays which attracted Jews
and non-Jews alike and were a major annual attraction in Venetian high society.
Purim’s traditional focus on merry-making, frivolity, even drunkenness, idealizes a time when the
Jewish people would be free to let down their guard and not always have to be hyper-vigilant and
afraid about what the non-Jews would say or do to the Jews in their communities. The wearing of
masks and costumes preserved a certain sense of deniability: “That wasn’t me behind the mask do-
ing those outrageous things last night!”
On a deeper level, though, our tradition teaches that at some level it is the masks that hide our true
selves that we wear every day. We put on pretenses that announce to the world that we are healthier,
wealthier, more put together, more self-assured, and more confident than we feel on the inside. At
some point in our lives, we all feel like frauds, like we have to present the most idealized version of
ourselves in order to be liked and accepted by others. So we put on our masks every day without
even realizing that’s not who we really are or how we really feel.
But with experience and wisdom we learn that our true friends and most enduring relationships are
formed in those moments of vulnerability, when we let our masks slip, reveal our imperfections to
the world, and let our most authentic selves show. We are likable and lovable just as we are.
That is what an authentic synagogue community can provide: a place where we can go to just be
ourselves - to kvell, to mourn, to question, to celebrate our own lives and the lives of others. I hope
that each of you will participate in making Beth Emeth such authentic place in your lives.
Please join us on the evening of February 28th as we join together to read the Megilah, share a Purim
shpiel, and let our masks down for a night. Happy Purim!

Celebration of Max Gimpel’s 100th Birthday was a big success! We were delighted to have Allen Gimpel here with us to honor his Father. Thank you Allen for contributing to the program, for doing the Haftorah Shabbat morning, and for your generous dona-tion! Sincere appreciation goes to Jim Gimpel for all his time and effort copying Max’s work for display, and for sending the CD and making the program possible. Permission to sell limited prints of two of Max’s pieces was a bonus as was the signed copy of Max’s book that was our raffle prize. Everyone was amazed by the scope of Max’s work, and it was a lovely fundraiser for the Synagogue. With Appreciation for Donations made in Max’s Honor for Wish Book Listings:

THE CHILDREN OF WILLESDEN LANE By Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen
“A beautiful book. An inspiring tribute to the power of a mother’s love.” Meryl Streep
ABOUT THE BOOK
The Children of Willesden Lane is a powerful memoir of music, hope and survival set in Europe during the holocaust. In the book, authors Mona Golabek and Lee Cohen tell the story of Lisa Jura, Golabek’s mother. in 1938, 14-year-old Lisa was an amazing young musician who dreamed of becoming a concert pianist. When Hitler’s army invaded the family’s hometown of Vienna, Austria, Lisa’s parents made the difficult decision to send her to London as part of the Kindertransport, a rescue mission that took nearly 10,000 Jewish children to safety in Britain. There, separated from her family, Lisa built a community with other refugees in a chil-dren’s hostel on Willesden Lane and fought to realize her dreams against a back-drop of war, loss and despair. Her music became a lifeline—not only for herself, but also for those around her—and helped form a web of support and connection that enabled people of all ages to maintain hope, endure tragedy and rebuild their lives. We would like to encourage everyone to read The Children of Willesden Lane and join facilitator, Ruth Rotkowitz, from Generations After, as she takes us on a slide show journey and discussion of the book. If you don’t get a chance to read the book before, I know that you will want to read it after. On April 4th, Mona Golabek, a Grammy-nominated musician, will be performing at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. A concert pianist, Mona Gorelick com-bines music and talk-acting to re-tell her mother’s story. For more information, please go to scottsdalecenterforperformingarts.org

Want to help Beth Emeth financially?
Are you committed to maintaining Beth Emeth as a premier center of Jewish life in the
West Valley? Do you wish you could do more to help, but limited monthly funds keep you
from offering more? Are you looking for a way to tangibly demonstrate to your children
and grandchildren your commitment to doing good deeds in the world?
Here are 3 options that can help you to become a steward of the legacy of our synagogue:
Leave a bequest to Beth Emeth congregation. Any portion of the funds which are support-
ing you in your retirement can be designated to build the endowment reserve of the con-
gregation, which we will use to ensure that we remain a viable and vibrant center of West
Valley Jewish live. If you don’t want to go through the trouble of changing a will or trust
document, you can designate a percentage of an existing IRA or life insurance policy to be
given to the shul with a simple change of beneficiary form.
Donate a highly appreciated asset to the shul for a generous tax deduction. If you’ve
owned stock in Amazon, Apple, or any stock or fund which has appreciated greatly over
the years, and now can’t sell it without facing a huge taxable gain, consider donating the
shares to the congregation. You won’t have to pay taxes on it, and instead will receive a
tax deduction for the full market value of the stock donated.
Create a charitable gift annuity. If you are invested in equities or bonds that aren’t paying
much in dividends or interest, and would like to receive a larger income stream during your
life, a charitable annuity can guarantee you a monthly payment, with any money left going
to Beth Emeth and our partners at the Jewish Community Foundation.
For more information on any of these options, please contact the Beth Emeth office at 623-
584-7210. Thank you for all your support.
