Dear Friends,
It always amazes me to see the transformations that happen in the lives residing within Ruth’s House of Hope. Thanks to your support, we can empower, bring hope, and walk beside the women whose lives are changing for the better. Miracles happen daily within the families we work with, many of which have become shattered due to unexpected and traumatic life events. Grief is a powerful emotion and is prevalent among the families we serve. But when hope enters grief, there is change. Ruth’s House off ers hope and healing to those who fi nd themselves homeless due to domestic violence, substance use disorder, mental health, poverty, and other life-changing circumstances. We are the safety and security needed to begin the healing and changing process into hope. Basic human needs, such as safe shelter, food, and resources, are fundamental needs. We meet each woman wherever they are in life and provide them with security and the ability to move forward in healing. Having 24-hour staff is a crucial life-giving support system and the next steps in recovering from the pain and grief many of the women experience before entering our doors. Through staff and support, they can begin transitioning their lives. Faith and the spirit can empower and heal the souls of these families, springing forth new growth. “Walk on with hope in your heart, and you’ll never walk alone.” quote by Shah Rukh Khan. Thanks to your support, we continue to grow hope and move lives forward in our community. I invite you to join us in our mission of off ering hope & healing to families who need it most. *Rachel* shares: “I fled an abusive marriage of five years with my nineteen-month-old daughter. I came to Ruth’s House feeling overwhelmed, I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know what our future held. My daughter and I were welcomed at Ruth’s House with open arms from the moment we arrived. Ruth’s House offered support and the resources that I desperately needed; including an order of protection, full custody of my daughter, and housing. My daughter and I spent almost two months in the Emergency Shelter Program before securing our own apartment, and we are now thriving and on our way to embracing our new life - a life that now holds hope for a good future. We couldn’t have done this without Ruth’s House of Hope and the support and resources they provide. I am forever grateful for
Ruth’s House and for the wonderful staff!
She shares with us: “I just wanted to check in and update you that my daughter and I are doing fantastic! I did the SMRLS divorce clinic last week, it was very liberating to file. I joined the YMCA here and my GED is next on the agenda. My daughter loves our new home, we have a view with a huge courtyard by a creek so she can look out at the ducks and of course the squirrels and puppies. I will try to drop by soon and visit but wanted you to know we are doing well. I can’t thank you enough because I have really carried that goal oriented driven mentality you provided from Ruth’s house to my daily life. My ultimate goal is a degree in Social Work. Thank you!”

This little boy, let’s call him *Will*, was 7 years old when I met him. His family had come from Somalia. It had been a long, arduous journey for him and his family--no doubt experiencing things that no small child should experience. He had three little sisters 5 and 4 years old and a baby only a few months old. When I met him, he was holding the baby over his shoulder, patting her back while speaking to me softly. His two other sisters stood quietly by, smiling and listening.
Their mother was not at the house that afternoon. She was receiving dialysis twice a week. Her husband, the children’s father, had beaten her so severely that her kidneys did not function. Will, under the supervision of the house staff, was watching over his sisters. He did this job with the grace of an adult.
We talked about painting and summer and fun things to do. His smile, his inquisitive mind, his gentleness, quickly reminded me of how wonderful children his age can be. His sisters
threw in questions and comments when they wanted to, beautiful little girls with dancing eyes and quick smiles. They kept me company awhile that day while I worked at the house. When the baby started fussing, they left me and went down the stairs together. He, bouncing the baby gently to quiet her.
Awhile later as I left, I looked into the living room. Will was lying on the sofa, his baby sister on his chest, again patting her and keeping her covered with a small blanket. His other two sisters sat at the end of the sofa, waiting patiently. All said goodbye and sent me on the way with beautiful smiles and sweet words.
I am still praying for this family of Ruth’s House, these families who have suffered trauma so severe or sadness so deep. How grateful I am to the God who watches over these families! How grateful I am that my path crossed theirs! How grateful I am that Ruth’s House is there to offer respite and help in times of great need!
