FORSGREN FIELD TURFPROJECT COMPLETED

New sports turf has been installed at Forsgren Field located at the Evans Boys & Girls Club. The project was made possible through the efforts of Rick Carlisle, Steve Forsgren, Bobby Aldridge Trey Jackson, Chris Williamson and other local baseball boosters. The turf covers the infield portion of the baseball facility. “We are so excited to have this premiere field in Fort Smith” said Carlisle. “It’s been a labor of love and we are happy to finally reach our goal” he added. With the 2020 High School State 6A baseball tournament scheduled to be played at Forsgren Field and Hunt Park (First National Bank Field) during May 2020, the event was unfortunately cancelled because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Forsgren Field was first dedicated in 1990 at the old Lions Club Park near Andrews Field in downtown Fort Smith. The late Vic Forsgren was instrumental in facility upgrades to the park. When the National Cemetery took over the property at Andrews Field and Forsgren Field, the Boys & Girls Club purchased property adjacent to the Evans Club. During the 2003 renovation of Evans, additional ballfields were added. A few years later, Forsgren Field was rededicated as the name for the high school and Babe Ruth field located at Evans. With a long-term agreement with the Fort Smith public schools athletic department, Forsgren Field and Hunts Park have been the home facilities for Northside High Grizzly baseball and Southside High Mavericks baseball. Northside has used Hunts Park as its home field since 1989. “We appreciate the Forsgren family and their continued work on the facility” said FSBGC executive director Jerry Glidewell. “They have a long history of supporting youth programs in our community, including Northside and Southside high schools” he added. Turf sponsors for the project include: NW Fire Protection, Forsgren Inc., Pruitt Tool, MP Warehouse, First National Bank, ArcBest, JDS Supply, AAA Urent, the Jackson family, Frontier Engineering, Modern Fence, Star Mechanical, Alber Irrigation, Hugg & Hall, BHC, Hug Chevrolet, Ken & Tara Kifer and Bill & Melissa Hanesworth.

ALUMNI NEWS Spring 2020

Former Boys & Girls Club Members Making Waves in the Music World

Many children dream of becoming something very big in their lives, from famous movie stars to pro athletes. Perhaps an astronaut or doctor, or maybe a singer or famous artist. Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club members Evan Hutchings, John-Lewis Anderson and Jabe Burgess have taken interesting roads through their own musical journeys. Like many endeavors, the higher up you climb the career ladder, the more competitive and challenging it gets in the music world. We applaud the musical heights these former members have risen to.

Evan Hutchings - as one of the most “in demand” session players in Nashville, Evan plays percussion and drums for the biggest artists in country music. He’s played on albums for Sam Hunt, Jason Aldean, Jose’ Feliciano, Toby Keith, Tracy Lawrence, Josh Turner, Justin Moore, Rascal Flatts, and various others. Evan has played in the house band for several nationally broadcast television shows, including the CMA awards. The son of Don Hutchings, pastor at Evangel Temple in Fort Smith, Evan received his first drum set at age 8. It was through hours of watching other drummers play in church that he learned how to play for a song and try to convey a sense of emotion through the drums. Evan is a former member of the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club (Evans unit) where he played basketball, football and baseball.

John-Lewis Anderson – a member of the New York City based indy rock band Brother Moses, is a former Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club member. The Lavaca High graduate played music in college with a popular band named Little Chief. Brother Moses was formed in 2014 by a group of friends who wanted to try and find a place for themselves in the Fayetteville (AR) music scene. Childhood friends and college roommates James Lockhart and Moses Gomez wrote songs in their spare room and showed them to friends and fellow University of Arkansas student John-Lewis Anderson, who invited them to play an annual Halloween house party they hosted. The experience bonded the band together and with a later addition of drummer Corey Dill, Brother Moses was born and set out to recreate the spirit of that night over and over. Their first official release, the sun-soaked, blissed-out Legends, took that spirit and condensed it into six songs that showcased the intertwined guitar work of Anderson and Gomez and the relentlessly catchy hooks of frontman James Lockhart. Produced and recorded by Raymond Richards (Local Natives, LCD Soundsystem). the record quickly turned the house parties into sold-out shows, and the group of friends into a

creative unit that sought to make something uniquely their own The Brother Moses first full-length release saw the band staying true to their frenetic roots, but dialed down to a more focused and controlled center. Mixing explosive hooks with tightly wound ribbons of guitar and synthesizers, Magnolia would go on to collect over a million total streams in just a year’s time after it’s February 2018 release.

Jabe Burgess - played quarterback for the Police Cubs in the Fort Smith rinky dink football at the Evans Boys & Girls Club for Coach Bill Niemeyer and Richard Baker. Raised in Greenwood, he started playing guitar at age 10. Burgess started writing songs in college while attending the Univ. of Tulsa on a football scholarship where he played quarterback for the Golden Hurricane for two years, one year at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and one year at Delta State University. After his football career ended Burgess formed a band consisting of home town friends and performed all across Arkansas and Oklahoma. In 2017, Burgess began traveling back and forth between Arkansas and Nashville to write with hit songwriter, Mark Alan Springer. In June of 2018, Burgess signed a publishing deal with Springer Ink. In his first year in Nashville, Burgess wrote over 100 songs and in the spring of 2019 he began recording his debut record with producer McV (Kane Brown, Levi Hummon).

Toby Keith Covel Toby Keith Evans Boys & Girls Club Country Music Star

TOBY KEITH WAS A FSBGC MEMBER AT EVANS

His real name is Toby Keith Covel, but country music fans know him as Toby Keith. The music superstar was once a member of the Evans Boys Club while living with his grandmother during elementary school. Toby played football at the Club for the “Little Rebs” coached by Johnny Standridge. His late grandmother, Hilda Martin, owned Billy’s Supper Club, where Toby helped work in the kitchen. Toby spent most of his childhood in Oklahoma, and dreamed of playing professional football. Two years ago the music icon, with 25 number one hits and another dozen top tens, donated an autographed guitar to the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club for the annual TJ Guitar & Music Gala fundraiser.

Jaylin Williams Named

Gatorade Player of the Year Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member Jaylin Williams has been awarded the Arkansas High School Gatorade Player of the Year. The senior from Northside High School recently signed a basketball scholarship with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. With the $1,000 Gatorade honor, Williams is donating the proceeds to the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. It was the second time in the past 3 years that a Northside High School Grizzly basketball player has been named to the honor. In 2018, Isaiah Joe was selected for the honor. Both were coached by Eric Burnett at Northside. Williams, a 6-foot-10, 230-pound senior center, led the Grizzlies to a 20-10 record and the Class 6A semifinals this past season. He averaged 18.7 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.5 blocks per game. A first-team All-State honoree, he was the Class 6A Player of the Year and the 6A State Championship MVP as a junior when the Grizzlies

won the 2019 title. Jaylin’s mother Linda Williams, was the 2010 Volunteer of the Year at the Jeffrey Boys & Girls Club. Jaylin participated in Boys & Girls Club basketball from grades 1- 6. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court.
