Residents unite: John Spain believes Moorabool needs multiple residents’ associations. Picture: Marco De Luca

Mix of voices way to cut angstBY BEN CAMERON

A BACCHUS Marsh community activist hascalled for better representation for residents.

John Spain said a fully functioning residents’association would empower the community tocommunicate better with Moorabool Councilover local issues such as the demolition of theold Bacchus Marsh library, annual budgets andincreasing traffic in West Maddingley.

‘‘Back in 2009, there was a lot of communityangst about the library,’’ Mr Spain said.

‘‘A functioning residents’ association wouldhave seen what was in the pipeline.

‘‘The community would have been betterprepared, and council would have handled the

process a lot better. It would be a good ongoingway of looking at what council is doing.

‘‘We are seeing a lot of new householdsmoving into Bacchus Marsh, and they areprobably used to seeing these types of repre-sentative bodies.’’

However, East Moorabool ward’s CrMichael Tudball feared a residents’ associationwould simply be another lobby group with anarrow focus. ‘‘The fact of the matter is councilengaged with a number of community groupsabout the library, both for and against,’’ hesaid. ‘‘Community groups are great, the morethe merrier, but they need to have a purpose.Too often you have groups who are passionateabout one or two things, which is great, but we

have plenty of groups like that already.’’Mr Spain said he would like to see multiple

residents’ associations representing differentareas. ‘‘There should be representation forMaddingley, Darley, not just one group repre-senting Bacchus Marsh or Moorabool,’’ hesaid. ‘‘People view things differently in differ-ent areas. We need groups that representresidents of specific areas, that communicatesregularly with council.’’

INBRIEF

School campaignMoorabool Council candidate Tonia Dudzik is

seeking 10,000 supporters to lobby for the

redevelopment of Bacchus Marsh Secondary

College. Ms Dudzik said she had been intending

to campaign for a second public secondary

school, until figures indicated the town wouldn’t

need another high school for at least a decade.

As reported by the Weekly, the school is waiting

on a funding commitment from the state

government. ‘‘This college needs to be

improved so that public high school children in

Bacchus Marsh and surrounding areas have the

best possible learning environment to provide

successful educational outcomes,’’ Ms Dudzik

said. She’s urging concerned residents to

contact Education Minister Martin Dixon. ‘‘If the

minister for education receives 10,000 letters he

may make a stand for us and include the

redevelopment in the next budget . . . 10,000

requests from one area should get his

attention.’’

Picking up sticksThe spring domestic firewood collection season

began on Saturday. Department of

Sustainability and Environment’s regional land

and fire manager, Helen Vaughan, said while a

permit was no longer needed to collect firewood

from designated areas, people must adhere to

regulations. “An individual can collect two cubic

metres of wood per person per day and there is

a maximum household collection limit of 16

cubic metres per financial year,” she said. “Only

fallen timber can be collected and people must

not damage, disturb or destroy dead or live

standing trees or collect visibly hollow logs or

logs growing moss or fungi.” For maps showing

the location of collection areas, visit

Rocking to the topBallarat band The Mimes took out the

Moorabool Battle of the Bands competition at

Bacchus Marsh Hall on August 25. The group

edged out The Cover Up to proceed to next

month’s regional finals with a chance to play at

the state finals at the Abbotsford Convent next

March. The competition has been the ticket to

rock for acts such as Airbourne , The Vasco Era ,

Drugs fuel surging crime rateBY BEN CAMERON

DRUG offences in Moorabool have jumped50 per cent in the past year as the shire’s overallcrime rate increased at almost twice the stateaverage.

New police data reveals the number of drug-related incidents rose from 42 to 63 in the yearto June, with overall crime increasing by 15 percent. The state’s overall crime rate rose by8.2 per cent in the same period.

There were 1372 offences reported to policein the past year, with drug possession charges up36 per cent. Incidents of harassment tripled.

However, Bacchus Marsh’s Acting InspectorPat Cleary said the arrests of five ‘‘very active’’drug dealers in the past few months would gosome way to reducing drug crime.

‘‘We expect those arrests to have an impact oncrime rates,’’ he said.

‘‘The main cause of crime, like just across thestate, is drugs. There is a direct correlation be-tween drug movement and use, with increasingcrime rates in Moorabool.’’

With other significant increases occurring inthe categories of theft (80.3 per cent), theft ofmotor vehicles (74.4 per cent), assault (19 percent), theft from motor vehicles (14.5 per cent)and residential burglary (12.3 per cent), Moora-bool’s crime investigation unit will gain an extradetective. A burglary task force will also be setup this month to support uniform officers.

‘‘I still believe the Moorabool community is avery safe community to live in and to visit,’’Inspector Mick Myers said in a statement.

He said despite operations Catch and Crikey, which focused on rural thefts, and the recoveryof large amounts of stolen property, thoseoffences continued to occur.

Road offences are also a concern.‘‘Moorabool police are continually amazed at

the number of offenders who are detected driv-ing dangerously, under the influence of alcoholand at high speeds,’’ Inspector Myers said.

‘‘Moorabool highway patrol has conducted18 specific road policing operations in supportof local units so far this year, but we continue tosee far too many casualties on our roads.’’

New cops for regionPOLICE are unable to say how many extraofficers will be allocated to Moorabool afterit was announced the western region wouldreceive 27 additional members.

Western region’s Superintendent AndrewAllen said the extra officers would comple-ment 50 police added in the past two years.

‘‘These additional numbers will providefor more supervisors as well as other ranks.

‘‘These police will primarily be allocated

across the Ballarat police service area, withothers assigned to the Moorabool area asdetermined by service demands.’’

Superintendent Allen said regional com-mand continually assessed the allocation ofpolice across both service areas.

Deputy Commissioner Lucinda Nolansaid extra officers had been allocated to com-munities where the need was greatest.

Ratepayers to be hit with $100 fire levyBY BEN CAMERON

MOORABOOL residents will fork out an extra$100 a year on their council rates to help fundVictoria’s firefighting services under one of thebiggest shake-ups of state taxes in decades.

From July next year, the fire service levy willcomprise a fixed component of $100 forresidential properties and $200 for commercial, industrial, farming and vacant properties.

There will also be a variable charge, calculatedas a percentage of the capital improved value of aproperty. Pensioners and veterans will get a $50concession per household.

Mayor Pat Griffin said he had concerns withthe government directing councils to collect rev-enue on its behalf.

He called for more information on how thenew levy would work.

‘‘Our issue is if it was considered unfair for

insurance companies to collect this money onbehalf of the state government, then why is it OKfor council?’’ Cr Griffin said.

“The MAV [Municipal Association of Vic-toria] state council was very clear on this issue —local councils don’t want to bill property ownersfor the levy.’’

A spokesman for Treasurer Kim Wells said thelevy was an important recommendation of theBushfires Royal Commission.

‘‘The decision to remove the fire services levyfrom insurance premiums will encourage morepeople to insure,’’ he said.

‘‘The new levy has been designed to enablelocal councils to use their existing rates collectionprocesses and notices to collect the levy on behalfof the government.’’

Bacchus Marsh resident John Spain said hewas concerned how the levy would affect rate-payers on a limited income.

First-time visitors to Bacchus Marsh last Thursday would be forgiven for thinking they’d stepped into a story book. The town was taken over by weird and

wonderful characters for the Bacchus Marsh Literary Trail, in what’s becoming one of the major events on the community calendar. A colourful parade headed

down Main Street as children learnt the important skills of reading and writing, not to mention dressing up. More pictures at mooraboolweekly.com.au.

Broadband rolloutgathers speedTHE National Broadband Network is expec-ted to be fully rolled out in Bacchus Marshwithin 18 months.

Service to the high-speed internet networkis being provided across three areas, coveringabout 9000 homes and businesses.

Work began in the second area in July, while construction on the other two areexpected to start this month and next.

An NBN Co spokesman said the companyhad to finalise the geographical boundaries ofthe network and determine the most efficientorder to build coverage areas.

Contractor Transfield will complete on-sitesurveys to plan how the network will be builtin each street, including an assessment ofexisting infrastructure like pits and under-ground pipes.

‘‘This can take several months but is anessential part of the process,’’ the spokesmansaid.

‘‘As the NBN is switched on progressivelyin each area, residents and businesses in thoseareas will be able to contact their telephone orinternet service provider to arrange their ser-vices to be delivered over the NBN.’’

Ballan will eventually be served by the net-work, however the town was not included ina three-year rollout plan.

NBN Co will update the plan on an annualbasis up to June 2016. Details: nbnco.com.au.

Our two cents oncouncil servicesBY BEN CAMERON

MOORABOOL Council has yet torelease the results of a communitysatisfaction survey.

The statewide Local GovernmentServices Report was released onAugust 22, collating results fromalmost 30,000 respondents whojudged the performance of 71councils.

A Moorabool spokesman told theWeekly the council was still assessingthe information.

Macedon Ranges released its resultson August 28, with 58 per cent ofrespondents satisfied with the coun-cil’s performance, and 69 per centhappy with its customer service.

Melton council will release itsresults on September 20.

Two years ago, a Department ofPlanning and Community Develop-ment report found half of respondents

believed Moorabool Council engagedthe community in decision making, while 54 per cent were satisfiedwith council’s overall performance.Fifty-nine per cent were satisfiedwith advocacy and communityrepresentation.

Local Government Minister Jeanet-te Powell said this year’s survey wasmore representative, as previoussurveys were confined to the ‘‘head ofthe household’’.

“The changes this year mean thatcomparisons with results from pastsurveys will be unreliable. The survey. . . provides a valuable guide on howcouncils can improve their services tothe community.’’

Mrs Powell said the survey indic-ated 49 per cent of respondentsbelieved their council was doing agood or very good job, while 13 percent rated their council’s performanceas poor or very poor.

Lapse puts CFAtrucks off roadBY BEN CAMERON

‘Systems [will be] putin place to ensure itdoes not happenagain.’

THE CFA will conduct a review afterthe registration of two trucks at theFiskville training facility was foundto have lapsed.

A CFA spokesman said bothtrucks were used solely for trainingpurposes.

Across the state, the registrationsof 22 CFA vehicles had lapsed, including a tanker based at Meltonand another at Parwan.

‘‘The vehicles are in the process ofbeing reregistered and are expectedto return to service shortly,’’ thespokesman said.

‘‘Two vehicles have been returnedto service, with a further eight dueback tomorrow, and the remaindernext week.”

Opposition emergency servicesspokesman James Merlino claimedsome fire stations would be without

trucks because of the oversight.“This will come as little consolationfor communities like Fiskville whichwill have trucks offline while thepaperwork is sorted out.”

However, Police and EmergencyServices Minister Peter Ryan said theCFA had assured the government itwas able to maintain services untilall trucks were reregistered and fullyoperational.

‘‘The CFA has indicated this willbe thoroughly investigated and sys-tems put in place to ensure it doesnot happen again.”

Group officer Gerry Lavery and state CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson (pictured) have opened Bacchus Marsh’s local

command centre, the group’s new headquarters at Moorabool Community Civic Centre in Halletts Way, Darley. Members of

the Bacchus Marsh, Balliang, Coimadai, Myrniong, Parwan and Rowsley fire brigades turned out for the August 25 event.

“It is great that we now have a group headquarters and the facilities that enable the group to run incidents more effectively,”

Mr Lavery said. The centre provides the group with improved training and meeting areas and will be available for other

services to use during emergencies.

Cobra great joins elite listBY BEN CAMERON

True clubman: Hall-of-famer Wayne Cracknell in hisplaying days for the Cobras.

THERE are not many footballers who lead theirclub for 254 games, retire, and then return to coachits junior netball team.

It’s probably one of the reasons Bacchus Marshfootballer Wayne Cracknell has been awarded oneof the Ballarat Football Netball League’s highesthonours – he’s a true clubman.

The 42 year old has been inducted into theleague’s hall of fame, the first Cobra inducted sincethe award it was introduced in 2008.

‘‘It’s a bit overwhelming, for a league that’s 119years old and to join some of the names mentioned,’’Cracknell said. ‘‘I’m humbled and proud, and a bitshocked.’’

Since debuting in 1987, Cracknell’s list of achieve-ments is extensive: club captain and coach, club andleague best and fairest medal winner and VCFL rep-resentative.

The only thing lacking from his swag of plaudits isa premiership medal. He came close in 1999, whenthe Cobras lost to Sunbury by 11 points.

In his induction speech, Cracknell thanked the‘‘unsung heroes of grassroots footy’’.

He also praised Bacchus Marsh games recordholder Mick Dodd and the late Jack Jefferies, afterwhom the club’s best and fairest award was named.

‘‘Having the opportunity to look back, you soonrealise how many people have touched you and howmany people you have touched,’’ Cracknell said.‘‘There are many unsung heroes at football clubsand they can usually be found doing the dirty jobs.We all know who they are and believe their effortsdid not go unnoticed — they made our club better.’’

He paid tribute to coaches Ian Dominguez, NevWilkie and Malcolm Scott, with special mentiongoing to Mick Phyland, who transformed him froma midfielder who went forward into a running half-back. ‘‘This changed my whole attitude and mademe look at football in a totally different way, it mademe a better player.’’ he said.

Cracknell said the support of his family was alsocrucial. ‘‘You can’t do anything in life if you don’thave a strong family connection.’’

It’s these family ties, after 25 years service to Bac-chus Marsh FC, that have Cracknell guiding thenext generation at the club. This season he was theunder-14 football and under-12 netball coach.

‘‘We had junior netball for the first time this yearand my daughter started playing, so I thought I’dbetter support her as I’ve supported my son.’’

With both teams recently losing eliminationfinals, Cracknell can now turn his attention to hisother great sporting love, cricket. He will again padup for Bacchus Marsh Cricket Club next month.

LEGACY IS KEEPING THEIRPROMISE TO MY DAD

NATIONAL PARTNERS

LEGACY WEEK 2 SEP - 8 SEP

Whether born with a disability or acquiring one, hundreds of Melburnians are sharing the national obsesssion with sport. And playing all the games we associate with able-bodied athletes is an option being increasingly taken up in the city’s north- west, as Tara Murray reports.

Willing Able

and

ROXBURGH Park’s Naz Erdim feared for his future after a diving accident left him a quadriplegic.

The thought of not ever playing sport again was the least of the then- 20-year-old’s concerns.

‘‘I wasn’t really sure and didn’t know what to expect. While I was in rehab they told me about different sports I could still play.

‘‘They told me about wheelchair rugby. Once I’d watched it, I really loved how they crashed and bashed on the court and were really good friends off the court.

‘‘Most people are confused when they fi rst see wheelchair rugby. They picture us on a rugby paddock. We play on a basketball court and it looks quiet dangerous.’’

Move forward 20 years and Erdim is com-peting in his fourth Paralympics in London.

‘‘It feels pretty good and it’s really special and we are looking forward to it, ’’he said before leaving.

‘‘We won silver in Sydney and Beijing and we’re pretty confi dent of going well in London.’’

As Erdim takes to the court in London, it’s also an opportunity to look at what sports are available for both physically and intel-lectually disabled people.

For most it’s not about competing at the top level; it’s about having the opportunities in the fi rst place.

‘‘A lot of the desire for sports is driven by the parents,’’ says Wyndham’s Access All Abilities community development offi cer, Wayne Slattery.

‘‘They will contact the YMCA or the council saying my child wants to play a particular sport. We then try and organise something.’’

INSIDESTORY

Slattery says Wyndham is one of the better-equipped areas in Melbourne’s north-west with soft tennis ; light exercise groups; aqua aerobics; carpet, lawn and tenpin bowls; netball; basketball; dance; wheelchair darts; jujitsu and swimming all catered for.

‘‘The aim for us is to get them into mainstream sport and sometimes we have to make some modifi cations or some rule changes to make this happen.

‘‘We mentor the coaches and provide them with advice on how to work with the children who need more attention.’’

Slattery says wheelchair basketball adds another element to the opportunities avail-able.

‘‘Just say a teenager [in a wheelchair] is playing; his family can compete, too. They get in the wheelchair and it becomes a fam-ily thing

‘‘Over half of the people in our sessions are able-bodied.’’

The Australian Paralympic Committee’s manager of development and pathways, Tim Matthews, says his team also looks to include disabled sports people in main-stream sport.

‘‘We aim to include our athletes in main-stream sports where we can but you can’t always make it happen.

‘‘Our goal is to include people with a disability in the core business of sport. Seg-regating them, all it does is make it an issue in many cases ... there needs to be more work to include people with disabilities in sporting clubs.’’

The Macedon Basketball Association has been able to do that with its Access All Abilities’ group, in which 50 people are registered.

While they may not play an actual compe-tition, they still enjoy games and play a role on the association’s grand fi nal day.

‘‘We didn’t realise there was a need for a program like this until we were approached in 2008,’’ says Michael Grantham, who’s in charge of the program.

‘‘We ran a trial program in 2009 and the participants enjoyed it so much that we incorporated it in our regular basketball program.

‘‘The youngest person is 10 and the eldest 74 and there’s all ages in between.

‘‘Each week they have a skills session, fol-lowed by a half-court game.’’

Tennis Victoria has 24 clubs, with pro-grams for people with disabilities, including wheelchair tennis.

South Gisborne Tennis Club is the only club in Melbourne’s north-west to have such a program.

‘‘We’ve been running it for 12 years,’’ says coach Gail Scott.

‘‘We have the Sunbury Macedon Specialist School come down and Distinctive Options from Sunbury [provider of disability sup-port and training programs] has sessions every week.

‘‘We’re looking at expanding it more. We would eventually like to run a competi-tion.’’

Scott says funding given to them earlier this year means they’ll be able to cater for more people in wheelchairs.

‘‘We now have to carry them onto the court. We are just waiting for the right weather to install ramps and bigger doors so they’ll be able to play on our hard courts.’’

Western Australian-based Cricket Champs is another program looking to set up some-thing similar, with the chance for kids to move into mainstream teams.

Now with clubs in WA and New South Wales, Cricket Champs wants to expand into Victoria.

‘‘There’s very limited opportunities for kids with disabilities to play sport,’’ says Justin Sambell

‘‘Many parents are reluctant to enrol their kids in sport. Programs like this give them a chance to start playing sport then move into mainstream sport, which they mightn’t have thought was possible.’’

While there is a focus on trying to get disabled people into mainstream sports clubs, there are still many sports groups focusing just on people with disabilities.

The Special Olympics has started a Com-munity Sports Link program, designed for special schools and disability service provid-ers to get people involved in weekly sports training.

‘‘Part of my role is to facilitate this pro-gram and others north-west of Melbourne. This term, I’ve got eight schools I’m work-ing on with soccer,’’ says Lessey Hodgkin-son, who runs the program in Melbourne’s north-west

‘‘We try to get them into the routine of training once a week, try and get them into a competition with a Special Olympics feel about it.’’

It’s through the Special Olympics program that Helping Hoops has started running free basketball training sessions for intellectual-ity disabled children.

Having already established programs for disadvantaged youth, founder Adam Mc-Kay said they were asked to look at running skills sessions for intellectually disabled children.

They recently moved their north-west pro-gram from Footscray to Broadmeadows.

Sunbury Jets basketball coach Mike Spears is one of the coaches in the program.

‘‘When I started we had one program and Adam said I had one coaching job for you per week, and now we’re doing four programs, two to three hours a day,

‘‘This area needs it. We used to do it at VU, most of the players were from Ascot Vale and some out of Werribee, but since we’ve been relocated its starting brand new here.’’

Jets player Jay Boyle is also involved in the program and is looking at bringing it out to Sunbury, having already visited the Sunbury Macedon Specialist School.

Melton’s Riding for the Disabled Associa-tion is another program based in Mel-bourne’s north-west.

The centre, which attracts people from places including Melton, Sunbury, Gis-borne, Point Cook and Bacchus Marsh, caters for both intellectual and physically disabled people.

‘‘There’s very few children that can’t have the opportunity to participate and we cater for a range of disabilities,’’ says head coach and co-ordinator Margaret Behan.

‘‘We modify the equipment and supervi-sion. Some riders may need three volunteers and lots of supervision, where others will be able to ride by themselves eventually.’’

Grand beginningsThere’s quality at every turn in this family residence, writes Carole Levy

If Tiger Woods was at the top of his game, histee-off from this property may score a hole-in-one at the golf course at the bottom of the hill. But it’s not just about a sporting location at

this property. It’s also about the glossy spotted gum

floorboards, the wall recesses, timber-framedopaque-glass internal doors, streamlined rollerblinds and the feeling of quality one finds at thisfamily-sized residence.

And, let’s not forget pleasingly co-ordinatedcolours throughout ranging from softest dovegrey and delicate creams to rich chocolate, latteand crisp white.

The entry hall has an immediate feeling ofgrandeur, not just from its breadth but for thewonderful floorboards that continue on steps upto the living hub.

An open carpeted lounge room is to the left ofentry. Through double doors opposite, the mainbedroom has a big walk-in wardrobe and a sleeken suite with dual vanity basins.

Comprising a family-meals zone and carpetedrumpus room, the informal living area is large,light-filled and appealing.

The stylish kitchen has stone-look benchtops, island bench under pendant lighting, glasssplashback, wine rack, walk-in pantry, dish-

washer and Technika cooker and rangehood.In-wall double sliding doors deliver a classy,

space-saving way to shut off the rumpus roomfor children when guests gather for dinner — anexample of good design used throughout.

Down a hallway, there are three bedrooms(two with walk-in wardrobes), a walk-in closet, bathroom, toilet and laundry with storage.

The meals area opens to a pergola with ceilingfan and views of the side yard with lawn, timberretaining walls and the start of a garden.

The property, which is a walk away from aplayground, has a double garage with remote-controlled door, internal access and back door.

Big on style, safety and economyEwan Kennedy and Derek Ogden road test the Hyundai i30

The new Hyundai i30: Moving forward in design and engine technology.

Designed for the European market atHyundai’s Technical Centre in Russels-heim, Germany, the new i30 takes on the

South Korean company’s ‘fluid sculpture’ stylewhich, it says, is inspired by nature and modernarchitecture. More practically, it gives the vehiclea slippery coefficient of friction of Cd 0.30, acornerstone of fuel economy.

Hyundai i30 gets straight to the point in thestyling stakes, with Hyundai’s signaturehexagonal radiator grille (chrome in thePremium test car we sampled), flanked by thelatest design HID xenon headlamps.

Sleek lines, offset by sculpted wheel archeshousing 17-inch alloy wheels, continue down theside of the vehicle, ending in a rear thatemphasises the vehicle’s wide stance.

The roof in the i30 Premium incorporates atwo-piece panoramic sunroof, the light fromwhich adds a feeling of space inside the cabin.A spoiler is positioned where the roof meets therear window.

The Hyundai i30, which comes in Active, Elite

and Premium variants, has been recognised as‘‘one of the safest in the small-car category’’ bythe Australasian New Car Assessment Program.

With room for five people, the Premium i30’scabin lives up to the model moniker with amodern mix of quality hard and soft surfaces.

Instruments are made easy to read with sports-style layout and blue back lighting.

The four-spoke steering wheel incorporates avariety of controls, including cruise control, audio and air-con.

The 1.6-litre CRDi diesel engine has beenupdated to produce 10.6 per cent more power(94 kW) over the previous i30 and 3.4 per centreduction in combined highway/urban fuelconsumption

At motorway speeds, the test i30 CRDi hadfuel consumption of 5.2 litres per 100km,increasing to about eight litres per 100km in hardstop-start traffic motoring.

The Hyundai i30 Premium 1.6 turbo-dieselsix-speed automatic sells for $32,590, plus on-roads.

Roos hop into semi after foiling BurrasBY TEO PELLIZZERI

SUNBURY Kangaroos overcame a third-quarterdeficit to beat Diggers Rest by 14 points in theRiddell District Football League qualifying finalon Saturday.

The Burras were gaining the upper hand at Kil-more in the third term when the margin stretchedto 20 points, but the Kangaroos rallied to comeback and win 8.15 (63) to 7.7 (49).

Sunbury advances to the second semi-finalagainst Romsey this weekend while Diggers Restmust play Riddell Bombers in the first elimina-tion final.

Both teams left the field goalless at the first

break before Diggers Rest wrestled the advant-age with two goals to one in the second term.

The Burras continued to extend the lead in thethird quarter only for a late rally from Sunburyto close the margin to three points at the finalchange.

‘‘In the middle of the year we would havedropped our heads,’’ Kangaroos co-coach ChrisMeacham said. ‘‘But with the belief we’ve got wejust kept coming and coming.

‘‘From a spectator point of view it [the firstquarter] would have looked scrappy but the balljust wasn’t coming into the forward 50 metrestoo much.’’ Meacham said switching midfieldmatch-ups to try and play one-on-one rather

than tag Diggers Rest players had coincided withthe Burras getting the upper hand.

Young forward Phillip Kaufmann brought theKangaroos back into the contest when he wasswitched to full forward, booting three goals.

Meacham moved himself into the forwardpocket and Kaufmann shone as the main forwardtarget, bringing in contested marks and havingfive shots for goal after the switch.

‘‘I asked at half-time for the players to step upand he [Kaufmann] pretty much announced him-self,’’ Meacham said.

‘‘I snapped one in the last, then Ryan Hattykicked one from the boundary and you could seethe heads drop. Normally their [Diggers] back

line is up and about.’’ Meacham said after lastyear’s agonising grand final defeat to Romseythere would be no problems keeping a lid on tak-ing the upper hand in the finals race.

‘‘We know Romsey are coming, we’re focusingon next week,’’ he said.

Brent Tuckey booted three goals as DiggersRest’s only multiple goal-kicker in his day-longduel with Sunbury’s Daniel Gregory.

Better players for the Burras were Dylan Han-nan, Stuart Clarke and Jeff Heritage.

DARLEY was collateral damage as NorthBallarat City returned to form in stunningfashion to win the Ballarat Football League elim-ination final by 61 points on Sunday.

The Devils may have had home groundadvantage at Darley Park but were ambushed byan eight-goal North Ballarat first quarter on theway to losing 13.8 (86) to 23.9 (147).

The black-and-whites showed their intentionsearly, hunting the ball at every contest and givingtheir Darley opponent no time or space with theball.

North City, led by Kal Young, were dominantfrom the outset, the forward group capitalisingon numerous opportunities and the defenderseffectively shutting down Darley’s dangerous for-wards.

After being blitzed from the start, Darleyattempted to stem the bleeding through thesecond term.

The Devils successfully managed to win backsome control, keeping North to just one goalwhile kicking two themselves through BrendanPorter.

However, this was undone with three NorthCity goals late in the quarter to blow the half-time margin out to 56 points.

There was no relenting in the third quarter.North Ballarat City kicked the first three goals ofthe second half, for a total of six for the term.

Ayden George added two for the term whileRyan Hobbs also provided a target up forward.

Darley managed four goals but it still left theDevils 14 goals behind North City at the finalchange.

Darley, to its credit, continued to stick to thetask and finished strongly with six last-termgoals.

Brendon Porter provided a focal point and wasclearly Darley’s best with six goals in a side thatwas heavily beaten.

Darley coach Rod McPherson had mixedfeelings at the end of the game.

Unhappy with the way his team finished theseason, he was nevertheless upbeat about theclub’s journey from last to fifth this year.

“We never recovered after the bye, and we had10 injuries out of last week,” he said.

“The club has a lot of areas to address but wehave come a long way from where we were. Thisteam has a lot of heart.”

Stars dull Melton’s promotion chancesBY TEO PELLIZZERI

MELTON’S promotion hopes suffered a majorblow with a 3-0 defeat to Heidelberg Stars lastSaturday in FFV provisional league 3 north-west.

‘‘It was one of those days,’’ Gnjidic said.‘‘Sometimes as a coach you can sense it’s not

going to be your day.‘‘Our promotion chances have taken a pretty

significant hit.’’Melton started with authority but Heidelberg’s

Melton pressed to chase an equaliser but were

Melton pressed again in the second half, conceding in the final minute after being caughton the break by a Heidelberg counter attack.

‘‘It was a much-improved performance fromus, 3-0 was not a true reflection of the game,’’Gnjidic said.

‘‘We dominated possession and had numerousopportunities, two of which were goal-boundshots blocked by our own players in scrambles.’’

Melton has two more games for the season butneeds top teams to drop points to have any

chance of snaring second place. ‘‘Performancewise and ability wise we’re capable, if we get therub of the green,’’ Gnjidic said.
