3Welcome 3

Bien entendu, certains plats peuvent parfois être très épicés !In 43 years, a certain line has been created. The Festival is not a shopping list with rows of names to buy. For me, it is a recipe book. The musicians, the public and the venue are the ingredients, which, once put together, provide the menu. For 16 days, the table is laid so that there is a dish to suit everyone and a chance to enjoy unexpected new flavours. Of course, some dishes can be too spicy!

4KEY NOTE Chris Blackwell & Island Records

5Chris Blackwell & Island Records

Chris Blackwell and Island Records One man, much musicBorn in London in 1937, Chris Blackwell has the cultures of two countries in his genetic make-up: Jamaica through his mother and Ireland through his father. These countries have given his Island Records label its most emblematic bands – Bob Marley & The Wailers, u2 and many others. The Montreux Jazz Festival celebrates the 50th anniversary of a record company founded by the man who “made” the music of the latter part of the 20th century.

As Claude Nobs says with a smile: “Island is 50, the Festival, 43. We are nearly the same age. Of course, Chris and I know each other!” At the tribute night to Quincy Jones in 2008, the two men agreed to organise an Island Records tribute for the company’s 50th anniversary. But, above all, the Festival founder wanted to pay tribute to a man with an uncommon knack for spotting talents – in reg-gae as well as in rock, pop and jazz. It all began in 1959 with 1,000 pounds. With this little nest-egg, Blackwell, then aged 22, started producing for pleasure. His work with local ska and reggae singers enabled him to build a solid reputation, mainly on the island. Gradually, the records crossed the Atlantic and ended up on London’s turn-tables. But it was in 1964, when he had moved to London, that he produced a first big hit. Millie Small covered My Boy Lollipop with a ska rhythm, accompanied by Ernest Ranglin’s band. It was an immediate success in the uK and the uSA and sold seven million copies. The label developed but, according to Blackwell, who feared it would become a “supermarket”, it kept its human dimen-sion. Artists, such as Jethro Tull, Cat Stevens and Robert Palmer joined the family and brought other styles with them. It was in 1971, by returning to his roots, that Blackwell reached a new dimension. With Bob Marley and the Wailers he began a collaboration that was to last until the death of the Rasta hero. In the ’80s, an Irish band, who had been unable to land a contract elsewhere, joined Island’s roster. Blackwell signed u2 and was not to regret it. Then came Grace Jones, Steve Winwood and many others. To cap it all, Blackwell successfully ventured into film production. After selling the company in 1989, he resigned as director in 1997, but retained his passion for music and cinema. With Claude Nobs, he has put together an incredibly dense programme to present to the public an attitude that knows no genre limits!

World premiere at the MJF: HERBIE HANCOCK and LANG LANG ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE LYON, conducted by JOHN AxELRODNew York, February 12th 1924, it’s snowing. There’s a large crowd at the Aeolian Hall for the creation of a Concerto for piano and jazz orchestra. Author and performer, George Gershwin is surrounded by the Paul Whiteman orchestra. A triumph for “Rhapsody in Blue”, which was considered as a hymn to the music of jazz by Gershwin, perfect expression of freedom and improvised inventions. “It came to me suddenly. I often heard phrases like: “jazz is at the service of dance.”I decided to kill this nonsense at once… It was on the train, with its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty bang… And there I suddenly heard, and even saw on paper – the complete construction of the Rhapsody, from beginning to end… I heard it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of America.”The work is for piano and orchestra, as well as solo piano; Gershwin himself had interpreted it in arranged rolls for Duo-Art reproducing piano and for two pianos. Montreux, July 5th 2009. World Premiere by Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang with the National Orchestra de Lyon conducted by John Axelrod. “I met Lang Lang after a concert of ‘The Rite of Spring’ he had performed in Los Angeles. Wearing a tu-xedo, with white sneakers, he surprised me with his kindness and humour. Shortly after we played at the Grammys and sure enough, we were quickly found discu-ssing the possibility of touring together, which would give a wonderful homage to the Rhapsody.”
