Does it feel like everyone in your congregation takes a vacation when summer rolls around? As summer begins, attend- ance often becomes even more erratic as families take vacation, go to family reunions, or simply take a break. However, the Scripture from Deuteronomy reminds us that our task of faith formation is not even just a weekly task, but a daily task at home or away. Here are a few helpful examples for families of ways to continue faith formation in the summer: Attend other congregations when you travel. Bring back a worship bulletin from the church you attend and complete these sentences on the front of the bulletin: "We saw……." "We heard….." "We thank God for….." Get a stuffed animal and attach to it a journal. Take the "travel animals" with you on your trip. Along the way, record in the journal where you were and what blessings you experienced in that place. Pick a service project parents and kids can do together during the summer months. (take food for a food pantry, help at a soup kitchen, visit a care facility, give up a snack each day and send the money to a service project, etc). Name the blessings you receive through your experience serving together. Remember your home congregation through prayer and giving even when you are away. Pray for those who will gather and support ministry expenses while you arent present. Take advantage of the daily devotional link d365 on our website at www.sumcm.org. Share it as a family devotional before you head out each morning or around the table at dinner. FAITH FORMATION ON VACATION "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding

you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise" (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).

Does it feel like everyone in your congregation takes a vacation when summer rolls around? As summer begins, attend-ance often becomes even more erratic as families take vacation, go to family reunions, or simply take a break. However, the Scripture from Deuteronomy reminds us that our task of faith formation is not even just a weekly task, but a daily task at home or away. Here are a few helpful examples for families of ways to continue faith formation in the summer:

Attend other congregations when you travel. Bring back a worship bulletin from the church you attend and complete these sentences on the front of the bulletin: "We saw……." "We heard….." "We thank God for….."

Get a stuffed animal and attach to it a journal.

Pray for those who will gather and support ministry expenses while you aren’t present.

Take advantage of the daily devotional link d365 on our website at www.sumcm.org. Share it as a family devotional before you head out each morning or around the table at dinner.

Kids use the daily scripture readings from POCKETS Magazine and adopt the “Do 1 Thing” suggestions for each week to make a difference where you are. Adults take an Upper Room Devotional with you as you travel.

We hope to see you at Salem UMC. But, wherever your travels take you this summer, may you find encouraging ways

to nurture your love for God and neighbor. (adapted from Discipleship Ministries online)

Last month our confirmands partici-pated in an exciting Spring Retreat at Lake Junaluska. Pictured here are Brady Keller, Ellie Shuping, Faith Pons, Ronin Smith, and Sara Pons grabbing dinner, posing with Chief Ju-naluska, and hanging out with session leader Ed Kilbourne. The group, which meets Wednesday evenings to explore faith, will resume this fall.

12 Ways to Begin Taking Church to Your Community Embrace an expansive concept of community 1. Learn to regard your community as an extension of your congregation. A church’s mission field goes beyond its membership to in-clude all the people God calls it to serve. You are connected to individuals who never set foot in your building. 2. Know that what’s happening within the church is no longer enough to attract people. 3. Don’t sit in your church building waiting for people to come. Be prepared to meet people where they are.

Prepare spiritually 4. Acknowledge the synergy between the Great Commandment in Matthew 22 and the Great Commission in Matthew 28. Evangelistic outreach expresses our love of others. 5. Remember Jesus primarily engaged people through everyday encounters, rather than in the Temple or synagogues. 6. Express love and compassion for your community in big and small ways. Avoid judgmentalism. 7. Pray regularly for your neighbors and lift up community concerns. 8. Attend to the faith formation of existing members and it will foster a desire to reach out to others.

Get to know the community surrounding your church 9. Review demographic data but don’t assume statistics alone will tell the whole story. 10. Get out in your neighborhood. Walk the streets. Map the area, and record your observations. How is it changing? 11. Assess community needs and assets. What are the needs of your context? Who are your neighbors, and how can you serve them? 12. Be attuned to where God is already at work in your community. (Excerpted from the Lewis Center for Church Leadership)
