Heeding the Call

As Christ-followers, we are called to engage our families, neighbors, city, county, country, and even world in the

name of Christ. Whose life will be changed by the simple act of mowing a lawn, cleaning a home, or providing

food to a person in need?

Meeting Community Needs

This year members of Commerce First UMC, Hickory Flat UMC, Homer UMC, Mt Bethel UMC, Mt Pleasant UMC,

New Salem UMC, and Warren Chapel UMC are joining together to provide special care to those in our communi-

ty during the month of August 2016. Over 100 volunteers will be reaching out to residents in Athens Clark Coun-

ty, Banks County, Jackson County and Habersham County.

Who is Being Served

Those we are serving include families requesting food – Feed My Sheep, young mothers – Grace Point, battered

woman – Peace Place, elderly or disabled – lawn and garden care, special diets – gluten free bread, military

service men and women – letters of thanks, assisted living residents – activities with young children, the home-

less – providing blankets, community police officers – letter and gift package and hygiene kits – Banks Jackson

County Emergency Food Bank.

Leadership Team.

Our 2016 leadership team spans many congregations and includes new leaders Robert Lyle, Community Ser-

vices - CFUMC, Amelia Chambers, Blankets for the Homeless - Mt Bethel UMC, and Patty Griffith, Peace Place

Retail Store - CFUMC. Other past leaders include Kim Savage, Harrison Pattman, Gina Hagan, Francine Smith,

Dianne Cheek, and Thelma Hart.

Volunteer to Serve

During the month of August 2016, you will have many opportunities to join your fellow

church members in signing up to help those in our community or praying for residents and

volunteers. You can simply call your church Great Day of Service leader, the church office

or when offered fill out a Great Day of Service sheet in the Church Bulletin. Your program

activity leader may give you a call when they receive your information to provide you with

details on your work assignment.

Surrendering to a Gospel Centered Life Caring for others is vital to our lives. Watching a homeless man enjoying a free lunch, seeing the smiling face of

an elderly lady as she hugs a 3 year old girl, or seeing the relief of a young mother getting the diapers she needs

for her baby are all part of experiencing the joy of surrendering ourselves to others. Being a Christian isn’t about

what God can do for us. It’s about giving up control of our lives to serve God. It’s about reaching out to those in

need.
