The Significance of Sha'bān By Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat hafizahullah (IDA)

Sha’bān, the eighth Is lamic month is second only to Ramadān in virtue, blessings and greatness. It is due to this virtue and greatness that the Prophet (SAW) used to emphasise its importance not only verbal ly but practical ly too.

‘Ā’ ishah (RA) narrates, “Rasūlul lāh (SAW) used to fast t i l l we would say that he would never stop fast ing and he would abandon fast ing t i l l we would say that he would never fast. I never saw Rasūlul lāh (SAW) fast ing for a whole month except the month of Ram -adān and did not see him fast ing in any month more than in the month of Sha’bān.” (Bukhārī , Musl im, Abū Dāwūd, Nasa’ ī )

‘Ā’ ishah (RA) narrates, “Rasūlul lāh (SAW) used to fast the (whole) month of Sha’bān except for a few days.” (An-Nasa’ ī )

Usāmah (RA) asked, “O Rasūlul lāh! I do not see you fast ing in any month as much as in Sha’bān.” He re -plied, “It is a month people are negl igent of between Rajab and Ramadān. It is a month in which deeds are raised towards the Lord of the worlds. There -fore, I l ike my deeds to be raised whilst I am fast ing.” (An-Nasa’ ī )

Fifteenth of Sha’bān

Amongst the days and nights of Sha’bān, there is one night (15th) noted for its great blessings and virtues.

Fortunate indeed are those who attain the ful l bless -ings and benefits of this night by spending it in per-forming good and refraining from evi l . One must str ive his utmost to attend to ‘ ibādah (worship) in this auspicious night as this night indeed is a great favour of Al lāh ta’ālā for the bel ievers. There are a number of ahādīth in regard to this night.

Muftī Taqī ‘Uthmānī (db) states: “Although the chain of narrators of some of those tradit ions suffers some minor technical defects, yet when al l those tradit ions are combined together, i t becomes clear that this night has some well-founded merits, and observing this night as a sacred night is not a baseless concoc -t ion as envisaged by some scholars who, on the basis of these minor defects, have total ly rejected giving any special importance to this night. In fact, some of those tradit ions have been held by some scholars of hadīth as authentic and the defects in the chain of some others have been treated by them as minor technical defects which, according to the science of hadīth, are curable by the variety of their ways of narration. That is why the elders of the Ummah have constantly been observing this night as a night of special merits and have been spending it in worship

and prayers.”

‘Al ī (RA) narrates that Rasūlul lāh (SAW) said, “When it is the f i fteenth of Sha’bān, then stand ( in worship) at night and fast during the day. Because Al lāh ta’ālā descends in this night at sunset to the f irst heaven and says: ‘ Is there any seeker of forgiveness, that I may forgive him? Is there any seeker of sustenance, that I may sustain him? Is there anyone in aff l ict ion, that I may remove his aff l ict ion? Is there anyone l ike this, l ike that (and so on). This continues unti l Fajr.” ( Ibn Mājah)

Abū Mūsā Al-Ash’arī (RA) narrates that the Messen-ger of Al lāh (SAW) said, “In the f i fteenth night of Sha’bān, Al lāh ta’ālā manifests and forgives al l His creation except for the Mushrik ( idolater) and the spiteful .” ( Ibn Mājah)

Recommended Deeds

The fol lowing practices are derived from the tradi -t ions of the Prophet (SAW).

(1) It is desirable that one fasts in the month of Sha’bān as much as one can. However, i f fast ing in Sha’bān is going to affect the fast ing of Ramadān then one should refrain from it .

(2) Although salāh should be performed in Jamā’ah (congregation) everyday, on this auspicious night, one must part ic ipate with deep and solemn care in the Maghrib, ‘ Ishā and Fajr Salāh.

(3) Spend as much t ime of the night as possible in worship individual ly. No specif ic du’ā or method of worship has been prescribed. One may engage in dhikr, recitat ion of the Qur ’ān, salāh, learning and teaching or any other form of ‘ ibādah. However, one must refrain from worldly talk and wasting of t ime. I f ‘ ibādah is not possible then at least avoid al l s inful and useless acts and go to bed as soon as possible.

(4) In one hadīth it has been mentioned that Rasū -lul lāh (SAW) vis ited the graveyard of Baqī ’. However, one may not establ ish the practice to be Sunnah as there is no mention of Rasūlul lāh (SAW) making it a general practice of this night. Hence, i f one vis its the graveyard once in a while it wi l l be permissible.

One must refrain in part icular from al l those prac -t ices that are contrary to the Sunnah. Many of us deprive ourselves of the blessings of such auspicious moments and the Favours of Al lāh ta’ālā by fol low-ing those customary acts which have no basis in the Qur ’ān and Sunnah.

May Al lāh ta’ālā guide us al l on the straight path and enl ighten us with the blessings of this sacred month and its blessed night. Āmīn.
