World anti-tobacco day World anti-Tobacco day was celebrated at theChennaicentreofREADIndiaunderIFFon31stMay2018.
The session was led by Mr. Dillibabu and Ms.Thirumagal from WOW mental health clinic. The event witnessed an active participation ofthe beneficiaries throughout the event. WorldNoTobaccoDay 2018was also an opportunityto support commitment and empower thecardiovascular community in the fight againsttobacco.
Cardiovasculardiseasekillsmorepeoplethananyothercauseofdeathworldwide,andtobaccouseandsecond-handsmokeexposurecontributestoapproximately12%ofallheartdiseasedeaths.
Addiction to harmful substances such as tobacco is prevalent in a few regions across the country, and affects multiple demographic groups, including very young children. In certain cultures, cannabis, charas and ganja are used during social and religious ceremonies; thus, this required READ India to approach the topic with tact. Our READ Centers tackled this issue by taking the time to understand the community’s point of view on the rise in the use of tobacco and on addiction as a health problem. This helped us build trust with the community, and create a plan to inform and educate them on the adverse affects tobacco can have on their health. With the aid of doctors, social work researchers, and some innovative interventions, READ India Centers now regularly conduct anti-tobacco workshops to understand the profile of the community and the reason for substance abuse, as well as to ensure access to resources to facilitate rehabilitation.
