In fact, every “Annual Giving” or “Special Projects/ Restricted” dollar contributed to The Foundation is used for such good work — none for administration costs. Finally, thank you all again for your support to The Rotary Foundation as it helps our Club, and all others in the world, as they work to improve the lives of those who live in poverty, those who need medical support, those who need education support, those who need clean water and improved sanitation systems, and those who are finally almost free of the dreaded disease — polio. November is Rotary Foundation Month by Rod Eide

And thank you MBSR members, current and past, for your nearly 23 years of outstanding support to The Rotary Foundation!

Since the Club was chartered in April 1988, club members have contributed $215,000 to The Rotary Foundation. As a result of these contributions, 145 persons have become Paul Harris Fellows — including 58 deserving non-members.

Currently all our members (except a few new members) are Paul Harris Fellows (many multiple times). Many of you may recall that as of a specific date a couple of years ago, MBSR was a 100% Paul Harris Fellows Club.

The Rotary Foundation was created many years ago to provide financial assistance to Rotary Clubs around the world with their International Service projects. As we in the Western world view our International Service project areas, we look primarily at the major needs of those people who live in the “third” world.

Such projects are typically very expensive and time consuming, and every year The Rotary Foundation makes millions of dollars available to Rotary Clubs for these projects (and in recent years, some local projects too). In fact, every “Annual Giving” or “Special Projects/Restricted” dollar contributed to The Foundation is used for such good work — none for administration costs.

Keep up that great work!!

President’s Messageby Al SoleyBring your thumb and index finger close together. We are this close to eradicating polio from the face of our planet. November is the Rotary Foundation month. Only through the support of Rotarians and friends of the Rotary Foundation have we been able to get this close. To eradicate polio we, “the Rotarians”, have mobilized by the thousands and are working to ensure that the children of the world are immunized against this crippling disease. Since inception of Polio Plus in 1985, more than two billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. On the worldwide health front; almost 8.8 million children die before reaching their fifth birthday, many due to preventable causes. In an ongoing commitment to serve communities and meet human needs, the Rotary foundation has been raising awareness about child mortality and developing projects that foster the health of mothers and their children. Although illiteracy rates continue to decline worldwide, one fifth of the world adults still cannot read, and almost 72 million of the world’s children are not

in school. Rotary foundation is also there to increase world awareness about illiteracy and continuously fight it.It is only with your support of the Foundation and becoming

repeated Paul Harris fellows that we have been able to come so far to advance world understanding, good will and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.Thank you my fellow Rotarians for your continued good work and support!

MBSR’s International Service committee approved a $500 budget to buy educational materials for Afghan children. In response to our inquiry, our friends in the 5th Marine Regiment identified six Afghan schools to receive a dozen boxes stuffed with pencils, writing and drawing pads, rulers, scissors and more as part of our humanitarian effort. In addition, the Marines who made the school delivery received an equal number of care and comfort boxes with MBSR’s deep gratitude and heartfelt appreciation for their dedication and the sacrifice that they are making for all Americans back home.Beyond improving the lives of the children in Afghanistan, it was the International Service Committee’s hope that these school supplies would be part of a peace-keeping mission for our Marines. The goal was not only to bring a smile to the faces of these kids, but also to bring goodwill and better relations for our Marines as they fight to make their country a safe, humane, and productive place to live. If the Afghan children can think of our Marines as good and kind and that Americans are generous and caring people, then the Club’s efforts will have made a difference. Terry Rifkin coordinated efforts of MBSR members Bonnie Myers, Paul Lehrich, Marsha Prentice and Honorary member Pete Hammer to pack the boxes, who commented “We hope to make a difference on the lives of the Afghanistan children.” In thanking MBSR, 1st Sgt. Crayton of the 5th Marines wrote: “Thank you for your support and kindness to the people of Afghanistan. I know these boxes will help our continued outreach to the people of Afghanistan. Please let all your Rotary Club members know that we appreciate their efforts. Look forward to getting back to you soon with some picture and notes about the donations.”

Can you imagine having your baby while your husband is thousands of miles from home, deployed in combat for an entire year? On October 16, the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group hosted a Baby Shower as an outreach and support for 16 women currently pregnant or recently gave birth whose husbands are deployed with the Regimental Combat Team 5 (RTC-5) to Afghanistan. There were special gifts, shower games and lunch for these extraordinary women.Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club sponsored a baby basket stocked with everything from a diaper genie, diapers, baby onesies, little clothes, shoes, and toys for one of the 16 guests of honor who is without their new baby’s father on such a significant occasion.Wives of our servicemen make extraordinary sacrifices. Giving birth without their husbands present or leaving a baby just born 30 minutes before boarding the bus for a 12 month deployment is just unimaginable. These are some of the common sacrifices that as civilians, we don’t often think about or acknowledge. MBSR’s baby basket donation went a long way to bring a smile to the face of one of our special Guests of Honor. We know if she was happy, this brought tremendous peace of mind to her husband so many miles away in Afghanistan.

MBSR’s “First Daughter,” AJ Jackson, is making us all proud as Dana Hills High School’s Interact Club President and District 5320’s Interact Governor, responsible for all the Interact Clubs within the District. Not only is AJ already a Rotary Foundation Paul Harris Fellow and a veteran of many MBSR community and international service projects over the years, but she has finally reached her senior year at Dana Hills High School and finally eligible to be honored as an MBSR Student of the Month. Fortunately DHHS thinks as highly of AJ as we do, nominating her for the month of October. As Interact Governor, AJ is coordinating an international service project among all Interact Clubs, It Makes Cents, which will spearhead fundraising efforts to support Water for South Sudan. AJ was proud to announce that District Governor Greg Owen has made an extremely generous financial donation to It Makes Cents, getting it off the ground and running. As AJ’s father, Mitch Jackson, stated, “Greg is an amazing man and his donation came completely out of the blue. He’s a true leader who has already “walked the talk” and made the difference in the life of one very special 17 year old that I happen to know very well.”AJ would be the first to remind everyone that if they would like to join Governor Greg in supporting this year’s Interact efforts, simply visit www.ItMakesCents.org and make your donation today. Mitch pointed out that he and AJ’s mom, Lisa Wilson, can’t say no to AJ, so they’ve already visited the site. Let’s all join in and help thank AJ for all her support of MBSR’s many projects over the years.

Sergeant Rod Walker of Orange County Sheriff Department gave a great talk to our Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary Club about identity theft, the various types of ID theft and protection measure, overview of major scams out there now, and what to do or not to do. Sergeant Walker is currently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Bureau where he heads up the Economic Crimes unit.
