Every once in awhile we need to have someone remind us of the Objects of Rotary, this morning Allen did just that. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a base of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

Ø First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

Ø Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignity of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

Ø Third: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

Ø Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the idea of service.

These principles serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the actions we take in the world.

Program Classification talks were a great invention, don’t you think? I usually come away from the experience of hearing a new member share their story feeling more connected. This was certainly true today; I came away feeling a kinship that wasn’t there before. Born in small town Saskatchewan in 1954, Roland grew up on a farm and that’s where his kinship with horses began. As a teenager he bought horses at auction, trained then sold them. The family had moved to Saskatoon by this time and it was where Roland graduated from High School in 1972. A career in Life Insurance followed immediately, then marriage in 1976, then after a very cold winter in 1984 they moved west to a balmier Kelowna in 1985. His love of horses followed them to Kelowna and for 5 or 6 years, into the early 90’s Roland as a member of the Canadian Equestrian Federation was in the business of training horses. In 1991 Roland moved into a career in Financial Services and he is still working with his Kelowna clients and building a clientele base here in Qualicum. In 2010, Nell, his wife of 34 years lost a 14-year battle with cancer and Roland found himself alone with two teen-age children. The spiritual experience that comes when a loved one is diagnosed with and then battles a potentially terminal disease is something many of us have experienced and can relate to. It’s a time of hope, love, reflection, grief, sometimes guilt, and in time, a moving on. Roland and wife Olivia are now settled in Qualicum, his client base is growing, Rotary is a new opportunity to serve, and his children are doing well. Our Rotary club has been enhanced because Roland is becoming a contributing member. Thank you Roland for sharing your story with us.
