A NEW SLAVERY WAS “BORN” SEE PG 126-27 FOR REFERENCE

• Thousands of workers needed in the new world

• A “new slavery” developed. One based on color not just capture.

• Slaves became property that could be bought and sold (like livestock or furniture) –this is called chattel property.

• It stayed a legal trade until 1808. the Brits outlawed it completely. The U.S. outlawed IMPORT of slaves but the trade continued within the states.
