MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGC22 Software Engineering Taught by: G.Roberts Total numbers on course = 64 Mean mark obtained = 64.6 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems The teaching of this module was taken over by myself (Graham Roberts) this year, following the same structure as in previous years. In addition it is now a core module for the new MScFC programme, so the number of students was significantly greater. Overall the module was a big success and enjoyable to teach despite the increase in student numbers. The students were strongly motivated by the group work and produced some very good results. The larger number of students turned out to be manageable. The quality of student work is reflected in the results presented, which have been approved by the external examiner. The pace and content were appropriate. The teaching methods were appropriate for the course content. No significant problems occurred. Actions on minor issues were taken as they arose. B. Any Learning Resources problems which have affected the provision of the course (quality of lecture or tutorial rooms, laboratory or IT facilities and action taken or planned No problems were encountered.

C. Issues identified by students (from questionnaires, staff-student committees etc.) and action taken or planned Students are asked to fill in course feedback questionnaires (http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/teaching/assessment/staff/archive), raise issues at the Staff Student Consultative Committee meetings (http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/teaching/ug/sscc/index.htm) and talk to their tutor. The demonstrators acting as project group supervisors would benefit from some more training and good UML experience.

MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGI10 Intelligent Systems in Bioinformatics Taught by: K.Bryson D.Jones Total numbers on course = 5 Mean mark obtained = 47.0 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems This is an improved average mark compared to last year, although clearly not ideal since it still lies below 50%. We tried ot ensure that the students were fully aware that the bioinformatics module part of the MScIS is quite different from other modules and, although it involves much less technical maths, it isn’t a ‘soft option’ compared to other modules. This view is possibly supported since the student taking it as a 4th year option obtained 63% – exactly the same course/exam. We need to continue to ensure the correct students from MScIS take this option and are fully engaged with it. The pace and content were appropriate. The teaching methods were appropriate for the course content. No significant problems occurred. Actions on minor issues were taken as they arose.

MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGS04 Tools and Environments Taught by: W.Emmerich Total numbers on course = 29 Mean mark obtained = 54.7 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems The quality of student work is reflected in the results presented, which have been approved by the external examiner. The pace and content were appropriate for most students. However, some students did not have the required pre-requisites (in particular on formal languages and compiler construction). Additional lectures were inserted to cover missing material for these students. The teaching methods were appropriate for the course content.

B. Any Learning Resources problems which have affected the provision of the course (quality of lecture or tutorial rooms, laboratory or IT facilities and action taken or planned Because the content of the course was much more advanced than in previous years, students felt that previous exam papers were inappropriate to prepare them for the written examination. The examiner set a mock paper, distributed it prior to the revision class and discussed the model answers in the revision class.

C. Issues identified by students (from questionnaires, staff-student committees etc.) and action taken or planned Following a written examination, the course representative filed a written complained that they were ill prepared for the final examination and that the focus of the questions in the examination were not in-line with the taught components of the course. The complained was assessed in detail in collaboration with the external examiner and it was found to be unfounded due to the significant number of students, who passed the examination with a distinction grade. For the next delivery it is planned to outline the pre-requisites more clearly at the beginning of term and to require students who do not meet the pre-requisites to do back-ground study in their own time prior to the beginning of the course.

No issues were identified. It has been interesting to note comments made by the students, who had compared the UCL MSc SSE programme with those offered by other UK HEIs. They said that the thing that helped them decide to come here was the fact that we had, in the previous year, been able to run internships with City firms. The 2007/08 MSc students (all 28) were also absolutely delighted to have the same opportunity (a four-month Citi internship programme).

MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGS07 Financial Information Systems Taught by: B.Weber Total numbers on course = 28 Mean mark obtained = 66.4 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems The course learning went at an appropriate pace. With a larger number of post-graduates in the course and a small number of undergraduates, I assumed familiarity with basic economic and financial business topics such as interest rates and balance sheets. This did not appear to present a problem for the younger students, and I would always mention web resources for learning about these concepts. – Also the class met 6 hours a day for one day a week for 5 weeks. To keep the density and intensity from being overwhelming, I used guest speakers twice, and videos, and 3 lab sessions.

B. Any Learning Resources problems which have affected the provision of the course (quality of lecture or tutorial rooms, laboratory or IT facilities and action taken or planned Three of the 10 class sessions were hands-on analysis labs – portfolio management, financial optimization, derivatives analysis -- in the PC rooms in MPEB 4.12 and 1.17. This spread the class over two places, I had to make the lab “self-directed” with a worksheet. I then circulated between the rooms to answer questions, and to monitor progress the student handed in answers to the exercises at the end of the lab. These were unassessed but recorded on a credit-no credit basis.

C. Issues identified by students (from questionnaires, staff-student committees etc.) and action taken or planned Students are asked to fill in course feedback questionnaires (http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/teaching/assessment/staff/archive), raise issues at the Staff Student Consultative Committee meetings (http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/teaching/ug/sscc/index.htm) and talk to their tutor. Some students were concerned that they could not complete the lab exercises in the class time. I explained that they could complete it on their own time as an assignment/revision for the exam. My preference is to challenge the most capable students and allow extra time for the others to complete the exercises.

MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGV01 Mathematical Methods, Algorithmics and Implementations Taught by: S.Julier Total numbers on course = 9 Mean mark obtained = 56.7 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems The quality of student work is reflected in the results presented, which have been approved by the external examiner. However, there were two confounding factors for the course. First, the course was substantially changed from previous years and so the presentation of much of the material was relatively experimental. In consequence, some parts were presented too quickly and other parts were poorly explained. Second, using the “short and fat” form for the course lead to considerable fatigue on the part of both the students and the lecturer. Third, a printing error occurred in the exam which was resolved by the Exam Board and approved by the external examiner. The first issue is being addressed by critically reviewing last year’s lectures and making incremental changes as required. In particular, stronger connections with end applications will be developed. The second issue has been addressed by changing the format of the course to run for the full ten weeks. The final issue will be addressed next year by a more thorough check of the exam papers before they are released to the candidates in the exam hall. B. MODULE REPORT FORM (Academic Year 2007-08) COMPGZ02 Network Performance Taught by: D.Wischik Total numbers on course = 23 Mean mark obtained = 55.1 A. Quality of student work, pace and content, appropriateness of teaching methods and action(s) taken to resolve any problems The quality of student work is reflected in the results presented, which have been approved by the external examiner The pace and content were appropriate, judging by the results of the MScDCNDS students. The COMP4033 students were too few in number for me to draw any general lessons, and they had very different abilities. The teaching methods were appropriate for the course content. The students said they especially appreciated the individual attention they received. No significant problems occurred. Actions on minor issues were taken as they arose.

B. Any Learning Resources problems which have affected the provision of the course (quality of lecture or tutorial rooms, laboratory or IT facilities and action taken or planned There is a systematic problem with the lecture rooms used by CS: they have far too little blackboard space for the lecturer to write on. Some rooms (e.g. the room I used in Foster Court, and the Roberts engineering building) are less bad. The rooms in Malet Place Engineering are atrocious -- whoever planned them should read Tufte on why Powerpoint destroys our ability to think and communicate. In my own office I have a bigger whiteboard than that in MP1.20. No action taken.

C.
