We look forward to having some photos to share soon. Two of our Year 10 SRC students will shortly represent their peers at the Interschool SRC meeting to be held at Parramatta High School. Joshua Donohoo and Parvathi Subramaniam will take with them the thoughts and opinions of our leadership team and share with other young people across the region who have accepted the same roles in their schools. These meetings provide an opportunity to see what others are doing and bring ideas back for the SRC to consider. I look forward to hearing their report.

Principal’s Message

Student Success I received an email this week from David Phipps, Regional Director for Western Sydney, congratulating our students and staff who were involved in PULSE 2012. His accolades were not a surprise to me as I have seen our students perform on many occasions and know exactly why they were chosen to be part of this outstanding event. Model Farms H S has been represented on a number of years and judging by the talents of our young up and coming, this looks to continue for many years to come. Congratulations to all our students and a huge thanks to their teachers for assisting them.

Jessica Rookeward has been experiencing a lot of success lately and she has been reaping the benefits of hard work. As well as Jessica’s many performances she has been selected for Talent Development Project (TDP) which is a joint initiative between the New South Wales Department of Education and Training and the entertainment industry. It prepares students for careers in the entertainment and music industries. Jessica has also been chosen to feature highly at School Spectacular this year.

Quite a few Model Farms’ students have been selected for the CHS recently as well. Brooke McDonald in the 1500 metres and the 3Km walk; Brendan Carroll the Double and Single mini trampoline and tumbling comps; James Young in the 13 years 100 and 200 metres as well as the long jump and hurdles; Holly Dymond in the 16 girls high jump; and Courtney Elliott in the 16 Years girls 100 metres. Our athletes are inspiring and we congratulate them all. We look forward to possibly seeing some of your names in lights at the Rio Olympics. Some of our students have the opportunity to not just represent their school, or State but occasionally their country. McKenzie Bowen is one such student. McKenzie is overseas at the moment with the National Youth Baseball League and enjoying not only a successful tour but a wonderful time in another country. We look forward to having some photos to share soon. Two of our Year 10 SRC students will shortly represent their peers at the Interschool SRC meeting to be held at Parramatta High School. Good Guys don’t come last! Last week I spoke about how ‘second place is ok’ and that it was important for our young people to receive the right sort of message about how to try; to try hard; and to be happy with a job done to the best of their ability. I hope some of them read it! Amazingly this week, I get my inspiration form the Amazing Race Australia. If you watched the final you would have seen the battle played out between the ‘nasty’ Paul and his teammate and the rest of the competitors in the race to win the prize. Each week, ‘nasty’ and ‘evil’ seemed to win each leg of the race (at least, that is the way the media portrayed it) and the good guys always came second. But in the end, after staying true to themselves and believing that they could do it, the nice, down to earth, homely, honest, decent, friendly and outright good blokes - the two cops – conquered the evil Paul and won the race! What a victory and a wonderful message for our young people – the good guys don’t always come last! I hope our young people who seem to be thwarted and hampered at times don’t ever give up. The effort is worth it – in the end!

This week’s news

Assignment Season: Yes, it’s that time of year again! Here is the list of assignments and when they are due.

Year Assignment Due:

Year 7 Shapes and Solids – making a children’s book and mobile.

Tuesday 28th August

Year 8 Pythagoras Theorem Tuesday 4th September

Year 9 GeoGebra Assignment Thursday 6th September

Year 10 Congruent & Similar Triangles Monday 3rd September

Year 11 Summary Books Monday 3rd September

Please make sure that your child is consistently working on their assignment so that it will be handed in by the due date. They must carefully check the marking criteria (on the assignment instruction sheet) to ensure they receive maximum possible marks. Assignments handed in after the due date will lose 10% of the marks per day that it is late – weekends count for two days. Year 9 teachers will be revising GeoGebra with their classes over the next week. ICAS Maths Competition: The ICAS Maths Competition was held on Tuesday 14th August. We anticipate some outstanding results from our talented Model Farms mathematicians. Calculators:

Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.

Coming Events

On Tuesday 21st August, Year 12 General Maths classes will be going on an excursion to the city to conduct an investigation that will assist them with their HSC. Year 12 2 unit Maths and Extension students will be undertaking an all-day intensive maths program at school that day.

Fun with Maths

Year 8 are studying Pythagoras’ Theorem at the moment. Here is the link to the song of Pythagoras’ Theorem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDINNFK3IhQ It is catchy! Also there is a good tutorial video explaining the use of Pythagoras’ Theorem on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WziqDlzHYxU Have a Mathematical week,

Maths Faculty Staff

FROM THE LIBRARY A lot of changes have happened in the library over the holidays. The fiction section is now organised into genre sections such as Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Supernatural, Adventure, etc. This means that if there is a particular genre you are interested in, you will now be able to go straight to that area and find something of interest. If you are looking for a particular title or author, a quick check of the catalogue will tell you if the book is available, and what section to look in. The catalogue can be accessed in two ways:

1. The computer next to the fiction shelves

2. The link on your portal – if you use this link you will be able to look up the

library catalogue from home as well.

Please see the librarian for a tip sheet on searching the catalogue. We have also put up new coloured noticeboards around the library and have added four coloured ottomans to the reading area. A reading group is in the works; look out for a notice next week. All are welcome! Donations of books or board games which are in good condition are always welcome in the library and are greatly appreciated. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is still on and it is disappointing that no forms have been returned. If you are taking part in the challenge, forms need to regularly be given to the librarian so that your details are on the system. There is only one more month to go!

ATTENTION

PARENTS Please note that Grade Trials for Term 4 sport will be on the 12th September & Rec Sport Selections will be on Friday the 14th September. Please speak to your children about the sports that they will be permitted to select before these dates. Take into consideration the cost of the sport and whether they will have to catch a bus. This will save last minute changes and ensure your child is in a sport that they are happy to participate in. If they need to change sports after the selections they will need a valid reason with a note from home and then they will be restricted in their options as many of the sports fill up on selection day. Below is a summary of the sports and the costs involved. Grade sports – Most grade sports will alternate away games and home games. Exceptions to this are Mixed Water Polo who will play away at central venues most weeks. Boys – Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Touch Girls – Softball, Volleyball, Netball, Oztag Rec Sports Rock Climbing $6 + bus Ten Pin Bowling $6.50 + bus Gym $8 + bus Swimming $4 + bus Ice Skating $8 + bus Squash $5 Tennis Olympus $5 Rec Walking - No charge Rec Touch, Netball, Soccer & Volleyball Round Robin - No Charge Boot Camp – No charge
