FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Student Success Congratulations to Year 10 Drama students who have auditioned and were selected to perform at the Lights Up Festival at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith on 11th August. The school has had a long tradition of having students selected to perform in this festival and I’m sure our Drama students will do us proud. Congratulations to Lara Azzopardi of Year 9 who plans to attend the Banff Hockey Academy for August 2016 until July 2017. Lara has been an Ice Hockey player for a long time and this is one opportunity she cannot afford to miss. We will miss her but will look forward to her return next year. Good luck Lara. Payment Online I’m sure many parents will be happy to hear that from the 12th of August onwards, there will be an option to pay fees online. This has taken some time to get off the ground but the plans are moving well in that direction. There are still some issues for us to work out and parents and students will be informed of the new arrangements as we draw closer to the live date. Front Office Upgrade This is due to take place sometime in Semester 2 and there will be some disruption to our front office services while the work is done. We are at the mercy of the contractors and so I cannot give a firm start date yet but will keep everyone informed as soon as we have concrete information to give. Trivia Night Have you booked your table yet? Don’t forget that this is the major fundraiser for the P&C and that the school benefits from the tremendous efforts shown by the parents. It would be fantastic to see everyone support them and the school as well as help us celebrate 40 years of the Farms

Recognition Assemblies As we near the end of Semester 1, Model Farms High School acknowledges outstanding student achievement and effort through our Recognition Breakfast Assemblies. This is an excellent program, where students, staff and parents have an opportunity to interact socially, before the formal part of the event. Each of these assemblies takes place in the school hall, with a light casual breakfast served at 7:30am. The formal proceedings take place at 8am and are concluded at 8:30am. Each award recipient is notified in the week prior to the event and are given an invitation, with an RSVP for catering purposes. The dates for the assemblies are below. Years 11 and 12 Tuesday 28 June 2016 Years 8 and 10 Tuesday 2 August 2016 Years 7 and 9 Tuesday 9 August 2016
We look forward to seeing as many students and families as possible at these assemblies, as we all take time to recognise the outstanding work of our students. HSC Study Guide Each year, the Sydney Morning Herald prepares study information to assist students with their planning and preparation. In 2016, the following link provides short videos designed to assist students for many of the courses undertaken by MFHS students. I recommend that each of our Year 12 students takes the time to watch these videos, to not only support their preparation for the HSC exams, but also the Trial HSC exams commencing in Week 1 Term 3. The videos can be found here, or via the url below. http://www.smh.com.au/national/education/hsc-study-guide Year 7 Office Monitor Program To support the school and enhance student’s understanding of the organisation and layout of Model Farms, Year 7 students become Office Monitors for a day. Student’s duties include taking messages to other students, staff members and assisting with the day to day administration of a comprehensive high school. During quieter moments, students complete a booklet identifying their personal interests and skills that helps them begin to understand the type of work that may be of interest in the years to come.

FROM THE ENGLISH FACULTY
Debating News
Year 11- Miss Greer
Commiserations to our Year 11 Debating who lost by the narrowest of margins to Penrith
Selective High School in the Regional Semi-final of the Year 11 and 12 Premier’s
Debating Challenge. Arguing for the affirmative, the topic was ‘that both mothers and
fathers should take compulsory parental leave’. The team argued strongly that there
should be a small compulsory period with the option to extend the leave for those that
needed it; enabling autonomy and lessening economic strain on both families and
businesses.
While the team are now out of this competition, they are still in the Year 11 Metro
Debating Competition with one round to go before the zone is finalised. Best of luck with
the next debate, Simone Cao, Corinne Kennedy, Joanna Bennetts, Abbey Sim and Angie
Geng!
Year 10 - Miss Estacio
The Year 10 Debating team competed in their first debate for the year at Crestwood High
School on Wednesday, 15th June. They were eager to get their skills of argument into
gear as they'd been preparing in after-school workshops. The team, consisting of Emily
Deschacht, Aaron Morden, Pavani Subramaniam and Lance van Doorene, argued for
the negative that all athletes who take performance-enhancing drugs should be banned for
life. It was a close debate and our team spoke with clarity and passion for their ideas. In
her feedback, the adjudicator said it came down to the aspects of scope and justice in
each team's argument. Based on this, the team WON. Students were praised on their
ability to broaden the discussion to an international scale and raise issues of a fair and
just trial when punishing athletes who do the wrong thing. Well done to Year 10. The
final round of the zone competition will be held next Tuesday: MFHS As versus Bs.
Good luck to all debating students!

Year 9 - Mrs Blockley
The competition is on and the debating has begun with conviction. The Model Farms Year 9 team, including Clare Hopkins as Speaker 1, Amy Broker-Towart as Speaker 2, Zoe Etchemendi as Speaker 3 and Angellina Sklavos as Team Adviser took on Crestwood High School 14th June. The topic was "That we should ban NAPLAN testing" and we had to argue the affirmative side. It was a challenging topic and the debate featured many thoughtful points and logical rebuttals. It was a close call and it was Crestwood High School who took out the win. However, the learning experience is the most valuable part of debating and we will strive to claim victory next time!
Thanks to Alana Genc and Lily Louden for being our Chairperson and time keeper and 70 for being a terrific audience. We wish the Year 10 team luck for their debate against Crestwood and we look forward to debating the Model Farms Year 10 team Tuesday 21st June in a Model Farms play off.
Year 8 and 7- Miss E Hoy
Congratulations to our Year 7 and 8 Debaters who competed in the first round of the Premier's Debating Challenge this week. We have two teams in the competition, with each member contributing valuable ideas and points to our debates. Model Farms A Team (consisting of Darcie Donaldson, Kieran Grady, Ashlea McCarrol, Adam Bust, Dillon De Silva and Olivia Bell) had the challenging topic, “that all teachers should work for one year in the country”, for which we argued the negative.
Model Farms B Team (consisting of Annabel Hayward, Phoebe Hendricks, Alex Garoosi, Kiran Konar and Alex McMillan) also had a very challenging topic, “that all schoolwork apart from Art should be done on computers”. While we did not win either debate, a valiant effort was put in by all students involved. We are looking forward to preparing for the next round.

Year 12 English
On Thursday 19th May, Year 12 Standard English students travelled to the Giant Dwarf
Theatre in Redfern to view a production of their HSC prescribed text, “The Shoehorn
Sonata.” Year 12 English Studies and Advanced classes participated in a dedicated study
day on their latest modules.
“The Shoehorn Sonata excursion 2016 was an extremely valuable experience in the sense
that, as HSC students we were able to see the characters studied via script in the
classroom, brought to life in front of us. To witness poignant moments with such
commitment and emotion from the two actresses on stage enabled us to gain further
understanding of the atrocity experienced by the women in WW2 POW camps as well as
their stoicism and comradely. On behalf of all students we’d like to give thanks to all the
English staff for organising such a valuable excursion. Undoubtedly this experience will
come in great use in the lead up to the HSC.”
Cara and Jackie Year 12, 2016
The English Faculty would like to wish
Year 12 every success in their upcoming Trial HSC examinations!

DRAMA at the Farms from Mr. Hodgson
Our HSC Drama students have been hard at work developing their Group Performance.
This will be performed at Fame at the Farms next week.
The Preliminary Drama students have been working towards their Verbatim Theatre
performance to be presented Week 1, Term 3. These students have been researching the
tragedy of the MH17 disaster. Students have engaged in a variety of exercises learning
the conventions of Verbatim Theatre, read a great number of articles and interviews and
used images as sources of stimuli to develop their performance.
Both our senior classes attended the Parramatta Riverside Theatre production of ‘Stolen’
on Tuesday 7th June. This excursion was a great success and the students learnt a lot
about the play that will help them with their HSC studies.
Year 10 Drama students have had a busy term creating a playbuilt performance called
‘After shocks’. This piece focuses on the tragedy of the Nepalese Earthquake. Exciting
news! ‘After shocks’ has been selected for LightsUP Festival on 11th August. Students
will be representing the school when they perform at the Joan Sutherland Theatre in
Penrith. Congratulation Year 10 Drama students!
The Junior Drama Ensemble has been working towards creating a playbuilt
performance called ‘Mighty Mikala’. This piece follows the vivid imagination of a
schoolgirl as she sits in class daydreaming. She becomes a secret agent and encounters
some strange characters including the evil red-haired Donald Dump, and a fierce and
frightening dragon. This performance will be presented at Fame at the Farms. We look
forward to seeing the talent continue to develop in these devoted performers. Great work
this term juniors!
Lastly, the Senior Drama Company is still hard at work rehearsing a production of
Bassett by James Graham to be presented Term 4. As part of their research, they attended
a production of Bassett at ATYP on 16th June. The evening was a great success and
students were able to mix with the professional cast afterwards and find out more about
the individual characters that they play.

FROM THE HSIE FACULTY
As term two draws to a close, teachers of the HSIE faculty have been busy marking and writing reports. We hope that all students have a restful break and return reinvigorated and ready to commence Term 3 with us as at Model Farms High School. Year 7 have settled in well to the Geography course and have started to master some of the essential skills for the subject. At the end of week 7, Year 7 attended a Geography excursion to the Aquarium and Wildlife World. Students had a great time exploring the venues and observing the behaviour of the various animals on display. The guides at the venues spoke to the students to provide them with a better understanding of some of the animals. One group of students was lucky enough to listen to an echidna and snake talk and were also given the opportunity to get up close with these animals for pats. Students worked diligently to complete their excursion booklets and were frantically trying to find interesting facts about the animals on display. Students were particularly fascinated by the shark tank and spent a great deal of time observing the sharks up close.
Students were lucky to see the sometimes reclusive Tasmanian Devil. The HSIE faculty also ran a photography competition for the students, for which we had some fantastic entries! The winner was very difficult to choose and we ended up running a vote within the faculty to decide. We would like to congratulate all the students who entered their amazing shots from the day and stay tuned as the winner will be announced shortly.
Overall, we had a lovely day out
where we were able to give students the opportunity to consolidate their classroom learning about various global environments with the interactive experience of the excursion. This included the environments of coral reefs, rainforests and deserts and the types of animals that can survive in these various environments.

Max Potential Connect Group Two
Our Year 11 students are halfway through the Max Potential Program and they are starting to integrate their personal leadership learning and develop their Community Service Project. The second Connect Group was held on Wednesday 8th June in Castle Hill RSL.
Each student gave a special Creative Personal Expression that highlights their learning thus far in the program through a creative meaningful presentation.
Well done to Corinne Kennedy, Lachlan Schuster and Amelia Kerney and their helpers Charlie Oliver and Mitchell Da Silva Pereira on their great presentations.

FROM THE MATHEMATICS FACULTY
Congratulations to the following Maths merit recipients: Year 7 Madison B, Raashi C, Saffron H, Ryan M,
This Week’s News: We are now at the end of another busy term. The Half Yearly Examinations have been marked and the reports have almost been completed. We hope that you have a safe and relaxing holiday period and come back ready for a wonderful Term 3 at Model Farms!
Year 12 students avoid the end of Term rush and hand in your Maths merits as soon as possible so that we can issue faculty merits for you in time to have them count towards your bronze, silver and gold awards. Check all of the places at home that you could have left Maths merits over the last 6 years; desks, cupboards, wardrobes etc. You only have 13 weeks until graduation!!
Assessment Task for Year 11 General Maths: Year 11 have received their instruction sheet for their Assessment Task 3 on the Focus Study: Driving. The assignment is due on 22th July, which is the Friday of the first week of Term 3. Please refer to the Year 11 Preliminary Assessment Task 2016 booklet to refresh your memory of the requirements for the completion of assessment tasks.
Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-100AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators work differently and it is important that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.
Coming Events We wish our Year 12 students well for their Trial HSC which will be held in the first two weeks of next term. If students haven’t changed their calculator batteries recently, we advise them to do so. We thank in advance the members of the Mathematics Faculty who are giving their time during the holidays to come in to prepare their Year 12 classes for these very important examinations. Have a Mathematical week, From Jackie Dalton and the Maths Faculty Staff

The Helmsman Project During the final term of 2015, a group of eight, year 9 boys, were selected to participate in the Helmsman Project moving into year 10 for 2016 as part of Model Farms welfare program. The objective of their participation was to provide the students with opportunities to develop their skills in leadership, resilience and communication. The boys selected to participate in the project were Taylor Barnett, Thorne Blackman, Luke Bugeja, Jayden Chesson, James Conry, Joshua Kahane, Ethan Holland and Aaron Morden. The Helmsman Project is run over the course of a calendar year. Students are asked to develop, pitch and then implement a community project of their own. During this process, students partake in group and individual coaching sessions with mentors from the Helmsman Project on a weekly basis. Possibly the most challenging component of the project is the Outward Bound adventure that students partake in. This happens in two stages. The first being a two day introductory experience in the bush outside Canberra where students learn all the necessary skills to survive in the wild. This is followed a few weeks later by a five day experience which includes hiking, abseiling and many other physical and emotional challenges. The boys took part in the Outward Bound experiences at the end of term 1 and handled themselves with much aplomb. At times they were pushed to their limits and as a result achieved things that they may have not thought ever possible. Once term 2 rolled around, the boys focus shifted well and truly to developing their community project idea. After wrestling with several ideas the boys settled on harvesting produce in a garden here at school for sale to the community. The funds raised would be donated to a charity and used to keep the project going. On Monday 20th June, the boys presented their pitch to a panel from the Helmsman Project. They showed outstanding presentation skills, particularly in front of a camera. It was a mixed result, with provisional approval being given for the project. The boys will meet again later this week to nut out some of the finer details of the project to represent to Helmsman. I am extremely confident that they will achieve the result they are looking for. We were privileged to have such great coaches/mentors in Leon and Sheena, who provided the group direction and encouragement when required. It has been an absolute pleasure as well as a challenge working with this group of fine young men. Not only have the boys risen to all challenges before them, I too found that I could achieve things that I thought were near impossible. Thank you to Mrs Lumley and Mrs Bennet for the ongoing support of this program.
