NSW Minister for Education, The Hon. Adrian Piccoli, presented Ashley and Reece Bartlett from Windsor High School with their RoSA credentials at a ceremony at Parliament House, Sydney on Tuesday morning. The RoSA is the new credential for students who leave school after Year 10 and before they receive their Higher School Certificate. According to Minister Piccoli both students were great examples of what the RoSA was designed for. “They both have well planned pathways, securing jobs in their chosen fields and have committed to further education which will build on what they will learn on the job.” Ashley Alwan is a talented and keen cook and has a passion for making cakes and desserts. Earlier this year she did work experience with celebrity Masterchef, Adriano Zumbo, and he was so impressed with her skill, talent and ambition that he offered her an apprenticeship which she will start in 2013. She will rotate around the five stores owned by Adriano but will be mainly based at Rozelle mastering the art of macaroons for which Adriano is now famous. She will also attend TAFE one day a week studying a Cert III and IV in Hospitality (patisserie) while training with Adriano and will work at building her skills under his tutelage. Ashley has her career path very definitively mapped out and her goal is to someday travel to France to study with French pastry chefs and eventually start up her own dessert bar. Congratulations Ashley. We are proud of you.

Student Success: Congratulations to Year 10 Ashley Alwan for being the first female student in NSW to be awarded the Record of School Achievement. NSW Minister for Education, The Hon. Art4Agriculture: Last week I had the pleasure of accompanying Ms Munroe and some of her Year 10 Art students to the Archibull Awards at Sydney Olympic Park where we picked up two second place prizes for work done with our 2012 fibreglass cow. Some 20 schools from around the state were involved in the competition. The Archibull Prize is an integrated program which engages secondary school students in agricultural and environmental awareness through art, design, creativity and teamwork. The

program's multilayered activities use art and multimedia to engage students to learn through hands on experience about the challenges of feeding, clothing and housing the world with a declining natural resource base. This year we received two Awards for Excellence in the Powerpoint section and the Best Cow section. Congratulations to Ms Munroe and all her team of helpers. Well done. Recognition Assemblies: Our schedule of recognition assemblies has nearly closed with only the Year 9 assembly to come on Monday morning. Each year the school takes pride in recognising the talents and achievements of our students and feels that this is an important aspect of encouraging continued effort and commitment to personal best. I have tried to encourage each student at the various assemblies and hope I have done a satisfactory job at it. I spoke at the Year 11 assembly of the challenges ahead for students who were now the leaders in the school and who were working towards their most important goal to date, the HSC. For Year 10 the challenge is to pick up their game from a relaxed year that saw the removal of the School Certificate exam and that left some of them floundering without a target. Their target now becomes meeting the challenges of a more rigorous senior year ahead of them. Year 7 have reached the end of their first year having experienced a tremendous amount of personal and academic growth and I encouraged them to keep filling their brain with new knowledge every day so that they would become better, more intelligent and enlightened learners. I look forward now to seeing as many of you as possible at our annual Presentation Night on Tuesday evening when we will recognize those students who have come first in their year for each subject as well as our individual awards to some outstanding students. Christina Bennet Principal

FROM THE FACULTY THAT COUNTS!

Year 7 Katelyn Boyd, Harry Diefenbach, Young Ki Kim,

Year 8 Emma McAlonan x 3, Alex Stani, Hairuo Yang.

Year 9 Adele Cowderoy.

This week’s news: School stationery and equipment can make really practical stocking fillers. Examples are: the Casio fx-82AU calculator, good quality geometry sets (can cost up to $14 at Big W, Office Works or at newsagents) or items as simple as pens and pencils, rulers, textas and colouring pencils.

Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are

familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.

Year 11 2013: With the introduction of the new General Maths course in 2013, graphics calculators will not be permitted in the HSC examination in 2014, but can be used in class. We recommend that if you intend to purchase a calculator for this course that it is the scientific calculator Casio fx-82AU as sold in the uniform shop and not a graphics calculator. Fun with Maths:

We would like to wish all of our students and their families a very happy and safe school holidays. Don‟t forget to look for the mathematics in the „real world‟ situations that you are engaging in as a family:

Travel times, petrol usage and distances for trips in the car.

Time differences if you are travelling across time zones.

Estimating how much wrapping paper that you will need to wrap different sized

presents (and how much sticky tape you will need!).

Calculating how much your Christmas cards and parcels will cost to post.

When cooking with your family, remember to engage them in measuring,

estimating, capacity and volume. Also scheduling of cooking so that everything is ready to serve at

the same time.

Have a Mathematical Christmas! From Jackie Dalton and the Maths Faculty Staff

THE GARDEN GROUP: The garden group has produced some impressive crops over the past two weeks. Take a look at the enourmous zuccini that was hidden underneath the leaves in the garden. The students have worked very hard and all their efforts have paid off. Some families have been enjoying freash basil, zuccini, chives, tomatoes and potatoes. The group ended the term with a celebration lunch. Students chopped fresh vegies from the garden and made a chicken teryaki and a vegetable stirfry. Congratulations to all the gardening students and thank you for making our school garden a success!! Mrs Snell
