Despite many analysts and industry experts going gung-ho about the Indian telecom

sector due to improved regulatory environment and massive data opportunity, the sector has not fully settled the dust today.

We should have been far ahead. If we analyze properly, the unique mobile business is just around 550 million customers. We are going through painful correction and there is no end to spectrum-related issues. We have still not penetrated to the rural areas where there is tremendous scope. A lot of eff orts are required to reach that stage.

The Indian telecom industry went through an upheaval when 122 licenses of all the greenfi eld telcos were cancelled two years ago. Players like Etisalat and STel had to exit the India market while

and is ringed with a solid metal chassis that makes it cool to the touch and very rigid. The aluminium frame gives it rigidity while the tempered glass and chamfered edges lend it a very classy look. The smartphone combines Sony’s OmniBalance design and has a 5.2” Full HD TRILUMINOS display, with its “G Lens”, 20.7 MP “Exmor RS for mobile” CMOS image sensor and “BIONZ for mobile” image processing engine.

others like Uninor had to deal with shrunken areas of operations.

Of late, a number of issues like mergers and acquisition have been resolved by the Department of Telecommunications. However, a lot remains to be done. So in light of the above, it is the government side that needs to do much more today. Regulations need to be in place for sharing of infrastructure and more so, sharing of spectrum related natural infrastructure.

Xiaomi Smartphones will enter in India this year

M o b i l i t y N e w s

Xiaomi is a privately owned company that designs, develops, and sells smartphones, an Andriod-

based OS, and other consumer electronics. Also known as “China’s Apple”, Xiaomi has revealed its expansion plans for this year, which includes an entry in 10 new markets including India.

Xiaomi’s Global Vice President and former Google Vice President, Hugo Barra says that company has been looking forward to association with telecom operators and other partners in India. He added that his company has plans to sell the smartphones at competitive prices via its own e-commerce site initially.

Xiaomi sold about 7.2 million smartphones in 2012, while the number increased to 18.7 million smartphones in 2013. An earlier report suggested Xiaomi has plans to sell 40 million handsets in 2014, more than double the number it sold in 2013.

Gionee has planned to aggressively expand its service network across Tier I, II & III cities. This will certainly help a brand like Gionee to put a strong hold in the Indian smartphone market. Gionee has constantly delivered high quality products to its customers across its product range.

Mr. Arvind.R.Vohra, Head - Gionee India said “At Gionee, it has been our constant endeavor

Obi Mobiles plans to invest $20 million this year to set up the Supply Chain in India

Obi Mobiles the mobile brand of Inflexionpoint, an IT supply chain company which is co

founded by Apple CEO John Sculley is planning to launch its handsets in the Indian markets by early May 2014. Obi Mobiles will be led by Ajay Sharma as CEO who was also associated with HTC and Micromax as their devision head. Obi Mobiles plans to invest $20 million this year to set up the supply chain, design centre and sales/after-sales in key locations across India.

Speaking on this occasion the Ex-Apple CEO John Sculley said that the Indian economy is seeing a radical shift since the last decade; the emergence of the knowledge economy has created a large services sector. “I see a huge o p p o r t u n i t y in fulfilling the requirements of growing and prospering middle class. India leads in mobile phone penetration. However owing to the delay in implementation of 3G services and high smartphone prices, the smartphone share in India is only 20%, leaving larger part of the ground with opportunities yet to be tapped. The scenario hence becomes a favourable and attractive chance for us to launch Obi Mobiles and offer the best of the smartphone with an apt pricing model.

Ajay Sharma, CEO, Obi Mobiles, said, “India’s smartphone market still has many opportunities to offer in terms of mobile features and value added services. Obi Mobiles will be catering to the needs of young Indians who want to own a mobile phone with latest technology, features and are also seeking value for money. These are also the major factors why young Indians replace their handsets quite frequently.” He said that it is a good time to enter this space considering the advent of 3G and 4G services, increasing affordable mobile internet plans, rising popularity of internet based communications and social media platforms coupled with availability of local content. “Additionally, with access to branding and marketing guidance from John Sculley and a well experienced team that we have built, we look forward to reaping the benefits of the intense smartphone demand in India.”

RCom, Aircel, Tata Tele Sign 3G Roaming Pact

The one-time spectrum fee is the charge operators were asked to pay for holding extra spectrum

.The partnership gives Aircel and Tata Tele access to most expensive service areas of Delhi and Mumbai where RCom has permits; DoT has barred 3G operators from signing intra-circle 3G roaming agreement with non-3G operators.

Reliance Communications Ltd has entered into an inter-circle roaming agreement with Tata Teleservices Ltd and Aircel Cellular Ltd for pan-India 3G roaming. The partnership gives Aircel and Tata Teleservices access to most expensive service areas of Delhi and Mumbai where RCom has permits.

The three operators, along with Loop Mobile, had earlier formed an intra-circle 2G roaming agreement. Inter-circle refers to ‘normal’ roaming, where roaming comes into eff ect only when the subscriber moves out of his home state, while intra-circle roaming refers to a coverage-boosting arrangement within the home state of the subscriber.

Aircel and Tata DoCoMo subscribers would be able to roam on RComm’s 3G networks when they move out of their home states. The facility will be free for RComm’s

subscribers. At present, only Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, and Vodafone off er pan-India roaming services through similar roaming agreements.

RCom and Aircel have permits for 3G services in 13 out of 22 service areas while Tata Teleservices has permit in 9 circles. The three operators have largely complementary 3G coverage areas, with RComm particularly strong in the metros, north and north-east India, while the other two have a strong presence in south India.

For the quarter ended 31 December 2013, the RCom had 36.2 million data customers, including 11.1 million 3G customers.Last month, the DoT issued notices to Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, cancelling the intra-circle roaming (ICR) agreements that allowed these companies to off er 3G services in the circles where they do not have spectrum.

“We are delighted to be the fi rst operator to off er 3G national roaming to our customers in partnership with other telecom fi rms having state-of-the-art 3G networks. “These alliances will further consolidate RCom’s position as the leading data operator in the country and will help the Company improve its post-paid and Corporate customer market share,” RCom’s Chief Executive Offi cer for Consumer Business, Gurdeep Singh, said in a statement.

Samsung’s New ChatON 3.5 now runs multi- platformWill it be able to compete with WhatsApp now?

Samsung recently unveiled the new version 3.5 of ChatON. In which now they have added many dynamic new features, and most importantly available across Android, iOS, Windows and Blackberry and can be used across

a wide range of devices. This will surely attract new users to use this platform the big question will be how many? As most of the people already hooked to other IMs like WhatsApp. Few interesting features which we have noticed at the launch is that now the Samsung ChatOn included up to 1GB file sharing, instant message translation between English and Hindi, up to 1001 members’ group chat, easy location sharing, sent message recall, Indianized Anicons and SMS/MMS integration etc.

At the launch Mr. Tarun Malik, Director of Media Solutions Center-South West Asia, Samsung Electronics demonstrated few new features of ChatON like to 1000 members’ group chat which means users can now have more friends and contacts in a single group and communicate with them seamlessly. Another cool new feature that we liked about ChatON which has been added keeping in mind user needs is the sent message recall feature, which allows users to recall messages they may have sent accidentally.

A big differentiator for ChatON is the Live Partners feature, which comprises key partners including CriqHQ, Ebay, Mint, Aajtak, amongst others to engage the consumer and provide exclusive content, discounts and deals. ChatON LIVE Partner is a highly popular one-stop-shop where users can subscribe to diverse content from multiple service providers. The assorted partner alliances include genres such as News, Sports, Food, Education, Astrology and Entertainment.

So though it has included lots of innovative features, but the main challenge will be for Samsung is to drag the crowed to ChatOn.

How are you looking at the Indian Smartphone and tablet market?

The smartphone and tablet market in India is currently enjoying a fantastic boom. A quick snapshot of the last two years tells that

smartphone sales in the country grew approximately by 105% (YoY) in 2013, while the tablet sales grew by 56.4% to 4.14 million units against 2.66 million units in 2012, according to industry estimates.

Markets like India, China and South East Asia, are not only focused on low-end smart phones, but are also considering devices with HD displays, higher-end multimedia and better multi-tasking capabilities. People are now open to buyinga slightly future proof phone witha 4 or 4.5-inch display screen, dual-core, quad-core or octa-core multi processor and 3G. There is a lot of scope for growth here. This is part of a major market trend we see called the Super-mid market, where the growth of the m i d d l e -

class populations world-wide, but especially in Asia, with increased consumer spending power, will drive the adoption of more smart connected devices that off er the best performance at reasonable prices. We see this trend already starting in India and we believe it will continue for many years to come.

There is also growing demand for increased performance while creating greater power effi ciency that can only be achieved through an optimized multi-core system approach. This means that multi-core processing capability is fast becoming a vital feature of mobile SoC solutions, in smartphones & tablets. As such, MediaTek is taking the lead to improve battery life in next-generation tablet and mobile device designs by providing more fl exibility to match tasks with the right-size core for better computational, graphical and multimedia performance.

What will be the next big thing you are expecting in coming years in mobile technology?

There are going to be multiple things. Firstly, there will be products with big.LITTLE CPU architectures. Earlier this year, MediaTek also announced a product called the MT6595; which is ourfl agship LTE product. We will see architectures that have big.LITTLE

confi gurations again to give users four big cores for performance and four little cores for lower processing

tasks. We will deliver these platforms with optimized hardware and software scheduler solutions. There willalso be a major transition from 32-bit to 64-bit computing, though it takes some time. We recently announced a family of LTE SoC – the quad-core MT6732 and the octa-

core MT6752 that will be available later this year that will start our journey into this world of 64-bit

computing.

What will be your plans for the Indian manufacturers?

Our philosophy has driven our belief that technology should not exist for its own sake but should be inclusive, giving everyone the ability to access the internet to improve their social and economic well-being. Since the very beginning, our vision has been “to enrich and enhance everyone’s lives”. We have

aspired and succeeded in democratizing the technology.

What all things you are doing for the wearable markets?

MediaTek has announced a wearable platform called Aster. This will be MediaTek’s entry platform for the wearable, and broader IoT (Internet of Things) markets can take advantage of the rich ecosystem of developers that are already familiar with the MediaTek platform and can build all kinds of innovative devices using our turnkey reference design as a starting point. There was an announcement by Google on the Android Wear platform which is focused more on the higher tier wearable devices, and we are a lead partner with Google on the Android Wear platform as well. Later there will be products based on the platform, from the Android universe. MediaTek is one of the few companies that has all the technologies like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Low Energy, Android platform, GPS, and the ability to put them all together in highly integrated and innovative platforms.

Tell us more about your fi rst LTE modem platform which you have showcased at CES this year.

This year, our focus is on LTE. We unveiled our fi rst LTE solutionearlier in the year at CES 2014. Following CES, we have also announced a range of SoCs from high end, to mid-high, to mainstream SoC solutions for LTE. MediaTek’sLTE products include a series of platforms; the MT6290 multi-mode LTE modem, MT6752 64-bit octa-core and MT6732 64-bit quad-core SoC. These are all products that are more integrated solutions for LTE. These will start to show up in devices towards the second half of this year. We expect to see launches of LTE devicesbased on MediaTekin many countries later this year.

What new things are you doing in the home entertainment segment which you have planned for Q2 of 2014?

MediaTek has a strong portfolio of home entertainment platforms, such as DTV and Blu-ray DVD, where we see the growing trend towards smart, connected devices that also require more CPU, GPU, multimedia and applications processing capabilities with higher-level operating system. We expect connected, smart TVs and other home-entertainment devices like STB, DVD, IP-streaming boxes to continue to drive growth for our platforms and products.

Yes, it has been a very long time, since Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJI) got the licenses for BWA roll out, but the company has come a long way

since then and is now set to launch its limited 4G LTE services by December 2014.

Though it has made a lot of headway in terms of BWA but there are some teething problems which need to be rectifi ed so that the company can go for a full-fl edged launch by the fi rst half of 2015.

To initiate its launch, RJI will do a selective launch on the same day in Jamnagar, New Delhi, and Mumbai and later do a full fl edged launch in the fi rst half of 2014. Reliance will be selective in terms of service off erings too, and also with respect to geographical coverage in Jamnagar, Delhi, and Mumbai. Later on, the company will deploy more services and also increase city coverage in all these cities.

The company would later launch services in state capital as RJI has to provide required street level coverage in at least 90% of metro service area within 5 years of the eff ective date.

In category A, B, and C service areas, the company hasto ensure that at least 50% of the rural SDCAs are covered within 5 years of the eff ective date. Coverage of a rural SDCA means that at least 90% of the area bounded by the municipal/local body limits should get street level coverage as per BWA (broadband wireless access) licence.

For IT requirements, RJI has opted for multiple vendors for diff erent modules to make integration easy. The company has deployed around 150 people from IBM for IT integration and all of them are working on diff erent modules. Initially, the company is looking at deploying prepaid solutions only and later on launch post paid solutions.

The company is also betting a lot on churning customers from other service providers so that the focus is on deploying SIP based Mobile Number Portability (MNP) from Syniverse. All this will help in strengthening Reliance’s business model. Initially, there is a lot of focus on MNP as this will help them get data card subscribers from other service providers into their network.

On VoLTE (voice over LTE) front, the biggest drawback is that the technology has not been proven for a large-scale deployment. According to experts, the maturity cycle in multi-vendor Inter Operability Test (IOT) for VoLTE is in the early stages so it will take time to mature. One has to also check its ability to seamlessly move between devices and also move between IP bearers.

So from a lab stage to get a full telco quality service would not be easy. One has to also see whether VoLTE is scalable to cater to more than 10 mn users and later scale to 50-100 mn users and also provide telco quality service.

Some of the modules have still not been finalized. For interconnect billing, the company is in active consultation with Subex or CSG. For content partnership, the company has still not finalized vendor for multi- party settlement as in the case of broadband services there will be an increased role of multi-party content. For content partnership, the company is in active discussions with Info nova GmbH, an Austrian company which focuses on solutions in the areas of multi and cross-industry partnering and monetization solutions (aggregation and multi-tenant BSS), media, and convergent services, content management systems and portals, middle ware, and OSS solutions.

The company has also tied up with MobiTV, a cloud basedTV everywhere solution and media platform that allows seamless time-shift and place-shift media consumption across multiple screens. One has to experience the performance of Mobile TV on the LTE platform as user experience is not satisfactory in 3G environment.

With bandwidth acting as a major obstacle, the quality of viewing in 3G environment was a major stumbling block. Even the subscriber numbers are not encouraging for 3G platform. The company has still not selected LIMS (lawful interception and monitoring solution) equipment, which will be mandatory requirement to give a head start to BWA services. The company is still in the test phase of LIMS.

With LTE focusing on voice, data, and video, monitoring calls and data session would not be an easy task for security agencies. Network Sharing: Slowly Gaining Momentum Initially, RJI thought of deploying its own fiber and towers but with time running out, the company had no other option but to lean on Anil Ambani’s telecom infrastructure.

Not only this, the company also had problems in terms of site acquisition both in Delhi and Mumbai considering radiation issues and site availability in prime locations. All this has led to network sharing agreement between the 2 brothers.

To start with the company has recently signed a definitive agreement with Reliance Communications (RCom) for approximately `1,200 crore as one time indefeasible right to use (IRU) fees for sharing RCom’s nation-wide inter-city fiber optic network infrastructure. This infrastructure will help them in wireless backhaul and not for FTTH (fiber-to the-home) deployment.

On the backbone front, RCom has alarge inter-city long distance network withover 190,000 route kilometers of ductedfiber optic cables. Under the terms of the agreement, Reliance Jio Infocomm willutilize

multiple fiber pairs across RCom’s120,000 kilometres inter-city fiber opticnetwork to provide a robust and futureproofbackbone for rolling out its stateof-the-art 4G services. As per the agreement, RCom will in turn have reciprocal access to optic fiber infrastructure to be built by RJI in the future.

The agreement also talks about joint working arrangements to be put in place immediately for upgradation of optic fiber network, to ensure seamless delivery of next generation services. This is the first in an intended comprehensive frame work of business co-operation between RJI and RCom.

For optimal utilization of the existing and future infrastructure of both companies on reciprocal basis, the 2 can share intra-city fiber, towers, andrelated assets at a later stage. The agreement for tower sharing is still pending and it is expected that it will be signed by July-October, 2013, time-frame. Presently, RJI can also use Reliance Infratel58,000+ towers for loading their eNodeBsites as presently it has a tenancy ratio of 1.74. All this will affect its geographical coverage in New Delhi and Mumbai.

In future, RJI can also sign sharing agreements with RCom on cable ducts, metro OFC network, international bandwidth, entertainment network and sales, and distribution network. RCom has an asset of over 25, 000 route kilometers of ducted fiber optic cables installed in the leading cities in India.

Simultaneously, the company also has metro fiber optic networks in 44 cities in India, with close to 1,134,000 buildings connected. On international bandwidth front, the company can leverage Reliance Globalcom, as the company serves over 2,100 enterprises, 200 carriers, and 2.5mn retail customers in 163 countries.

The company also owns the world’s largest private undersea cable system spanning 65,000 km with a robust global service delivery platform connecting key markets like India, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the US. RJI also has a strong focus on entertainment and games as these things have great demand in India. The company can also leverage on Reliance Entertainment network as the company focuses on internet and new media, film entertainment(film production, distribution, and exhibition),and broadcast channel featuring locally relevant content around humor, bollywood, movies, and music. RCom also has around 900 retail outlets (Reliance Web World and Reliance Outlet) in 90 odd cities and this can be handy for RJI for demo set up, customer query, service activation, and bill payment for broadband services. Setting up a completely new retail network will be more time-consuming and will not be ready in the given time-frame. The earlier these agreements are signed it will help in faster deployment of services giving RJI an increased reach and also lot of savings in the long-run. This will also help in longer trial run before the much-awaited BWA launch in the country.

Device Agreements: Still Not Finalized The core of BWA services is mobile handsets and as per industry sources, RJI has still not signed agreements for handsets with either Samsung or LG which are at the forefront of VoLTE. It is certain that RJI’s 4G cannot take off unless and until the company signs agreement with Samsung and LG for LTE handsets or smartphones. RJI has also still not signed agreement for devices be it set-top box, Mi-Fi, home gateway, outdoor unit, tablet, and others.

In Barcelona, both LG and Samsung demonstrated VoLTE but mobile handsets need to be tested in the commercial environment which would not be easy as presently both the companies are focusing on launching VoLTE for the Korean market as there is a lot of requirement for LTE handsets in these markets.

Both the vendors also need to make VoLTE phones which are scalable and also time tested. This will only happen when RJI can expect to give orders to the tune of minimum 8-10 mn for 2 to 3 years. One can expect to see several VoLTE handsets in 2013 with features like: video conferencing, presence-enhanced address book, and instant messaging.

When the handset has native VoLTE, it’s also accessible via the phone’s native dialer. All these features will be handy whenever these handsets are launched in the Indian market. VoLTE capable devices will very much depend on rollout and inter working of IMS networks on a global basis.

RJI need to stitch device agreement at the earliest so that consumers can avail a complete bouquet of handsets be it in low-end, mid-end, and high-end at a reasonable cost. This will also help in popularizing broadband services as entertainment will be the prime driver followed by games.

The company can also look at education and health applications at a later stage which would be useful for both urban and rural consumers. The company is also looking at manufacturing some of the CPEs (customer premise equipment) under RJI brand name which will help in lowering their cost in the Indian market so that these equipment can appeal to a larger audience.

The company is looking at starting services in 3 cities and later on ramp up services in state capitals. The company is betting a lot on its group companies and subsidiaries for providing support and providing an improved broadband service delivery whenever it launches the services. Presently, RJI is recruiting people at all levels be it senior, mid level, and low level. Some of the senior level people being recruited are still in the process of joining.

Though the company has started working on branding front but we do not see a lot of people recruited in marketing and sales. Presently, the company is in a project phase so there are people from the vendor community but later on, the company have to deploy a lot many people in operation and maintenance for day-to-day operations.

With TD-LTE service deployment happening on a large scale in Asia Pacific region, getting quality talent on technology side would not be easy. Once people are being recruited, training would be a big challenge as RJI do not have much time left in 2013 for the actual launch of services.

So, in a nutshell, we expect selective launch of broadband services in Delhi, Mumbai, and Jamnagar. And to speed up things, the company should take note of the above issues and improve on the timelines so that there is no further delay.

If there is any gap in that, the company will also have to pay a huge penalty if it do not meet its service obligation of 90% coverage in metro areas and in category A, B, and C circles.

When smartphone users start looking beyond the phone’s physical dimensions and price, they will discover a thing or two on the

technical side that you may fi nd very useful. One element that has become increasingly important is a phone’s processing power. That’s where dual core vs. quad core comes in.

It wasn’t too long ago that smartphones included a single-core processor. They had one CPU, or central processing unit, often referred to as a computer on a chip. Beginning in 2012, many smartphone manufacturers began to off er devices with dual-core processors, and not long after that, quad-core processors. In theory, the

more processors, the faster, as they can divide up the work you’re asking the phone to do.

Caring about processing powerIn one signifi cant way, computers, whether they

reside on a tiny chip or take up a large amount of room, haven’t changed since their invention. To a large extent, they can only do what applications tell them to do.

A quad-core processor is faster than a single- or dual-core processor only when it’s running an application that’s been developed to take advantage of its abilities. Most applications today are still written for single- or dual-core processing, and while most of the time this simply means

the quad-core’s extra power goes unused, there are other instances when the application performs better with dual-core processing power.

Single. Duo. Quad. What is your smartphone capable of?

The Diff erence of Quad Core

There’s more to a chip than simply its number of cores. Some chips,

for example, are designed with a

focus on using less power, which preserves

battery life. Others are built to handle specific

tasks, like graphics management. Some sacrifice speed in favor of increased reliability, while others are designed for speed alone.

A smartphone with a dual-core processor may perform beautifully, as it enables you to quickly switch tasks. One core may be at work on your web browsing while the other is basically just standing by. A call comes in, and the second core gets to work. Both your web browsing and your phone call continue without a hitch.

A quad-core processor allows your smartphone to run the latest, greatest, most complex apps, such as an intricate, graphics-heavy videogame. It can also mean business-oriented functions that require speed perform more smoothly. Video calls have better image clarity and solid audio, and the processor also has the ability to handle other functions in the background.

Memory is also crucial—a phone that comes with 16 GB or 32 GB of memory is able to store lots of information on board. This means that you can carry lots of apps, documents, graphics, and audio and video files with you all the time, enabling apps to grab data with almost no delay. For apps that require access to the Web, more memory often allows apps to “cache” data (for example, Web pages or streaming video and audio) to use in the future. This translates to better streaming of audio and video, and less delay when surfing the Web.

Quad Core Goes Strong with Smartphones

can confidently say that this is an eye catcher. Setting up this device is very easy all you have to do is just push the earpiece into the headband and pair it with your device. But first the base to a power supply and press the mobile device button on the base you will hear pairing mode announcement in the headset and the mobile device icon will light up. Then all you have to do is follow the voice-guided pairing instructions in the headset to pair to your Bluetooth device. And if you have a NFC enabled device all you just need to do is tap your mobile device against the NFC zone on the headset and you are ready to go. The base unit is also used for charging the device, when you are not using the headset dock it in the base for charging, which takes approx 3 hours to full charge.

Usability:As we mentioned connecting this device is very

easy, though you might feel its difficult but that’s not the case its as simple as connect any other Bluetooth device. Good battery life which mean you can talk up to 12 hours and 7 days standby time, without having to recharge up to 2 days—a convenience for businesses with high call traffic and communications processes. Few drawbacks that we noticed is that it has its limitations , like the headset can’t be used for your landline desk phone — as this specific product is designed as an IP telephony, softphone accessory. But overall a good quality product for any softphone user or large enterprise.

Verdict: Though it has its own limitations , but give you good

different, it is not only a powerful docking system but with just a little push you can pop out a portable speaker which you can use it as a wireless speaker independently. Lookwise it is a mixture of metallic, white and clear glass on the back which gives it a very clean look. It fits in and looks perfect in any kind of ambiance, like in your desktop or bookshelf or at your bedroom or drawing room or under your LED TV. The subwoofer dock is made primarily from clear plastic with painted metal grilles.. A black version is also available, substituting translucent black plastic for the white model’s clear frame. Voyager measures 210 x 127 mm in diameter and height and has a Lithium polymer (7.4V 1000mAh). Weight is about 1.14kg may feel bit bulky for few with its docking system, but you can move it around in your house and office area, and if you plans to move out of your premises then just carry the portable speaker instead.

Features and connectivity:The 8”-diameter docking station comes with a wall

And if you take out the portable speaker and use it independently, that portable and wireless Bluetooth speaker gives you built-Clear Sound echo and noise-free speakerphone function.

The broadcasting distance of bluetooth goes beyond 20foot easily. In our Audio test we played various bit- rate files with bass heavy ,acoustic, jazz and other popular numbers and this speaker didn’t even disappoint a bit. The audio is slightly better if we use it with the main docking speaker. The battery life last for around 6 hrs in mid range play mode. Both portable units can be recharged using

included micro-USB cables, using five white lights to indicate their remaining battery power. The base station also has a USB charging port can use as a multifunction device to charge your smartphone or tablet too.

These days smartphone manufacturer bringing good amount of devices in the mid range segment. And bringing a streamline version

of their flagship models is a kind of a trend now, and due to that not only the mobile manufacturer but customers are also keep a close watch on this segment. Nokia Lumia 1320 is also caters to this category as this model is the streamline version of Lumia 1520. Nokia Lumia 1320 sets its sights, maintaining the large-scale of its 1520 brother but minus the top-end specification. With this model Nokia looks to offer the best of both the size and value to those who want a large display and 4G connectivity but don’t want to shell out that much of money which others are offering in the market.

Build and DesignThough it’s a affordable sibling of the Lumia 1520,

and cuts out some of that phone’s higher-end features but Nokia maintained the solid its build quality with 1320. The rear casing is a single piece of plastic with a matte finish that snaps on and off easily and remains securely in place to give a unibody feel. The 1320 is curvy on the edges as compared to 1520 w h i c h was squared on the corners. The power/lock button is perfectly placed on the side. Both the volume rocker and dedicated camera button are all solidly finished and ease to use. It measures 164.2 x 85.9 x 9.8 mm and weighs 220g, which is 11g heavier than the pricier 1520 and over 50g heavier than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Overall on the phone feels good in your hand but you will not feel comfortable for one hand use and also feels bulky in your pocket. It comes in vibrant colors like yellow, orange as well as the more conventional black and white.

DisplayNokia 1320 has a big 6-inch panel offers

a nicely sized keyboard and has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the screen, which is something the

Nokia Lumia 1320A Big Bold But Budget-Friendly Phablet

Lumia 1520 was missing., The 1280 x 720 resolution IPS LCD screen offers just 245ppi all content is sharp and with a more than sufficient b r i g h t n e s s . The ClearBlack t e c h n o l o g y allows reading content well even in direct sunlight because the image is automatically rendered with an extremely high contrast. The Windows Phone 8 OS can certainly handle itself on the 1320’s 245ppi resolution the colour on screen looks great thanks to the TrueColor technology which is ideal when using the myriad tiles. But when you are using such a big display you always feel the missing crystal-clear images on 1080p HD screens.

Processor & SoftwareLumia 1320 runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 400,

8930AB dual-core processor runs at 1.7GHz. The integrated Adreno 305 GPU takes care of graphics, and there’s 1GB of RAM which makes multitasking and heavy applications smooth. Won’t feel any lag or heating issue in our test run.The Lumia 1320 comes with Windows Phone 8 with Lumia Black onboard. This latest software means users now have the ability to edit the Glance screen allowing for a choice of notifications from messaging and calls to Facebook and Twitter to be available at a glance without unlocking the phone. Also users can double touch the screen to enter the lock screen with more notifications there, before swiping up to unlock. Nokia’s Here Maps is also included with the phone we tried the offline maps which performs quite well without any lost of signal.

Camera1320 doesn’t represent Nokia’s

imaging excellence to the same degree as

the 1520 m o d e l . Nokia bring

the camera specs down

from 20 to 5 megapixel,

s o

don’t expect 1320 to give you that quality

picture but the main camera is a

5-megapixel affair capable of 1080p video recording, the front-facing

camera is a 640x480-pixel give you quite decent output though.

Battery LifeNokia Lumia 1320 has an amazing battery

life it lasted for more than 11 hours in real life test with gameplay, music, Wifi, Maps, Video, Audio, Facebook etc. In the benchmark test also it scores more than Note 3 and 1520.

Final VerdictThe Nokia Lumia 1320 offers you huge

6- inch screen, decent build quality, amazing battery life which is a good deal for people who are looking for a big screen model in affordable price tag, but the low resolution and camera specs will disappoint all the power users.

Whats all things changed in Nokia after the takeover by Microsoft?

The ownership now change to Microsoft, from the consumer point of view all it means is now you have

two companies that have come together as one, the power of time to market to bring innovation will go up signifi cantly. And we will continue to invest in the all price points weather in aff ordable, midrange or the fl agship models.

Tell us about your latest Lumia 630 This Windows fi rst dual SIM smartphone,

because about 80% of people in India like the dual SIM variant of mobile phones. And we have added many technical features which user will certainly like. First of all we have put a Qurad- Core Processor in a 11,500 price tag, we are giving Windows 8.1 which is the latest Windows platform launched last month globally. Also like to mention that this is a what we called a smart dual SIM smartphone that will help user to handle personal and professional life much easily. If you look at a battery life prospective we have got a 2000mAh battery life. We also announced launch of few accessories which are very trendy like Treasure Tag with a price tag of 2099/-and a Bluetooth Mini speaker @ 5499/-.

Lumia 630 has two variants, one is dual SIM which will be available 12th and the single SIM variant will be available by end of this month at 10,500/-

As a fi rst device with Windows 8.1 what are the special off erings?

Apart from software feature and enhancement into it we also packed in lots of cloud services that are coming with the Microsoft,7GB of Onedrive with this device apart from that we off er Offi ce 365 straight from the cloud and a bunch of these kind of cloud services that we felt could be a huge

value for consumers for their personal space as well as the professional space.

How is the Nokia app store doing?According to a study In India, on the

number of downloads done from the various stores. They estimated it at around 220-230 million downloads a month. The number that gets done on the Nokia store is around 80 million a month. Nearly a third of the downloads are from the Nokia store.

In India, we have a very vibrant developer economy, and the number of people that have been able to monetize using the Nokia

store is

pretty high. It’s getting a lot of traction. We are picking up simple ideas and making them more elegant so they add value to the entire eco-system, and the acceptance goes up further.

What are your expected market Share? Two important thing in Indian context last 12

months we have grown triple in Lumia platform, globally we have doubled, India is in the top 4

“Our important achievements in the last one year is: In India we have grown three times on Lumia platform and globally two times”

markets for company also important for us to say that in dual SIM in the less than 12,000 category which has 80% of device based then we are building on the equity we have created with 520 and 525 and with this device as a dual SIM we do expect that we get a fair share of the market.

The global battle is on between Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS – there are two predominantly visible operating systems used

primarily in mobile technology, such as smartphones and tablets. Though Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform are becoming the fastest growing smartphone operating system but still Google Android and Apple’s iOS continued its dominance in the continent based on new market share fi gures. So we are looking into this big battle of the front runners.

Android, which is Linux-based and partly open source, is more PC-like than iOS, in that its interface and basic features are generally more customizable from top to bottom. However, iOS’ uniform design elements are sometimes seen as being more user-friendly.

Users should choose smartphone and tablet systems carefully, as switching from iOS to Android or vice versa will require you to buy apps again in the Google Play or Apple App Store. Android is now the world’s most commonly used smartphone platform and is used by many diff erent

phone manufacturers. iOS is only used on Apple devices, such as the iPhone.

iOS and Android both use touch interfaces that have a lot in common - swiping, tapping and pinch-and-zoom. Both operating systems boot to a homescreen, which is similar to a computer desktop. While an iOS home screen only contains rows of app icons, Android allows the use of widgets, which display auto-updating information such as weather and email. The iOS user interface features a dock where users can pin their most frequently used applications.

A status bar runs across the top on both iOS and Android, off ering information such the time, WiFi or cell signal, and battery life; on Android the status bar also shows the number of newly received emails, messages and reminders.

Many diff erent manufacturers make Android phones and they often include some customization over the vanilla Android experience. e.g. HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz. Depending upon your device and carrier, there

may be pre-installed apps that are bundled with your Android device.

Apps World Android gets apps from Google Play, which currently

has 600,000 apps available, most of which will run on tablets. However, some Android devices, such as the Kindle Fire, use separate app stores that have a smaller selection of apps available. Many originally iOS-only apps are now available for Android, including Instagram and Pinterest, and Google’s more open app-store means other exclusive apps are also available, including Adobe Flash Player and BitTorrent. Android also off ers access to Google-based apps, such as Youtube and Google Docs.

The Apple app store currently off ers 700,000 apps, 250,000 of which are available for the iPad. Most developers prefer to develop games for iOS before they develop for Android. Since a recent update, the Youtube app has become unavailable on iOS, but iOS still off ers some exclusive apps, including the popular game Infi nity Blade and Twitter client Tweetbot.

The Big Battle: Google’s Android Vs Apple’s iOS

And hence, the bottomline when comparing Google and Apple’s app stores is that most popular apps are available for both platforms. But for tablets, there are more apps designed specifically for the iPad while Android tablet apps are often scaled up versions of Android smartphone apps. Developers at startups often focus on one platform (usually iOS) when they first launch their smartphone app because they do not have resources to serve multiple platforms from the get go. For example, the popular Instagram app started with iOS and their Android app came much later.

Software upgradesAlthough Google does update Android frequently,

some users may find that they do not receive the updates on their phone, or even purchase phones with out-of-date software. Phone manufacturers decide whether and when to offer software upgrades. They may not offer an upgrade to the latest version of Android for all the phones and tablets in their product line. Even when an upgrade is offered, it is usually several months after the new version of Android has been released.

This is one area where iOS users have an advantage. iOS upgrades are generally available to all iOS devices. There could be exceptions for devices older than three years, or for certain features like Siri, which was available for iPhone 4S users but not for older versions of iPhone. Apple cites hardware capability as the reason some older devices may not receive all new features in an upgrade.

Device SelectionA wide variety of Android devices are available at many

different price points, sizes and hardware capabilities.

iOS is only available on Apple devices: the iPhone as a phone, the iPad as a tablet, and the iPod Touch as an MP3 player. These tend to be more expensive than equivalent hardware using Android.

Call FeaturesAndroid allows the user to send one of a number of

self-composed texts as autoreplies when declining a call.

iOS’s phone app has many abilities, including the ability to reply to a phonecall with a canned text message instead of answering, or to set a callback reminder. It also has a Do Not Disturb mode.

MessagingAndroid allows users to log onto GTalk for instant

messages. iOS does not offer a native way to chat to non-Apple users. Users can message over Apple users using iMessage or use apps from Google for GTalk and Microsoft for Skype.

Video ChatGoogle Hangouts on Android can also be used for

video chat, allowing users to chat over either 3G or Wi-Fi. iOS uses Facetime, which can place video calls over both 3G and WiFi. However, it only allows users to communicate with other Apple devices.

Voice Commands on Android vs iOSiOS uses Siri, a voice-based virtual assistant, to

understand and respond to both dictation as well as spoken commands. Siri includes many features, such as reading sports scores and standings, making reservations

at restaurants and finding movie times at the local theater. You can also dictate texts and emails, schedule calendar events, and interface with car audio and navigation.

Android offers a similar assistant, Google Now, which features the above abilities, plus can keep track of your calendar and give verbal reminders when it is time to leave. It allows for voice search and dictation.

Mobile paymentsAndroid uses Google Wallet, an app

that allows for mobile payments. Some Android phones are equipped with an NFC chip (near-field communication) that is used for making wireless payments simply by tapping the phone at the checkout counter. This service integrates with Google Wallet but is not available on all Android phones or wireless carriers.

iOS offers Passbook, an app that collects in one place tickets, reward cards, and credit/debit cards. There are no mobile payment features in iOS.

SecurityAndroid’s applications are isolated from the rest of

the system’s resources, unless a user specifically grants an application access to other features. This makes the system less vulnerable to bugs, but developer confusion means that many apps ask for unnecessary permissions. The most widespread malware on Android is one where text messages are sent to premium rate numbers without the knowledge of the user, and the sending of personal information to unauthorized third parties. As it is the more popular smartphone operating system, it is more likely to be the focus of attacks.

Malware writers are less likely to write apps for iOS, due to Apple’s review of all the apps and verification of the identity of app publishers. However, if an iOS device is jailbroken and apps installed from outside Apple’s store, it can be vulnerable to attacks and malware.

Building and Publishing Apps for iOS vs. Android

Android apps are programmed using C, C++ and Java. It is an “open” platform; anyone can download the Android source code and Android SDK for free.

iOS apps are programmed using Objective-C. Developers must pay $99 every year for access to the iOS SDK and the right to publish in Apple’s app store. The iOS SDK is only available for the Mac platform.

Some app development platforms - such as Titanium Appcelerator and PhoneGap - offer a way to code once (say in Javascript and/or HTML) and have the platform convert it into “native” code for both Android and iOS platforms.

UI Design for Android vs. iOS 7• Buttons:Androidbuttonsareusuallymonochromatic,

with a tendency towards using iconography when possible. The standard iOS 7 button is plain monochromatic text with no background or border. When iOS 7 does use button borders, they tend to be quite simple.

• TheActionBarofNavigationBar:ThenavbariniOSis usually just a Back button linking to the previous

screen. In Android, the navigation bar usually has several action buttons.

• Intents: Intents on Android allows applications toflexibly interoperate with each other. For example, apps can “register” themselves as capable of sharing which allows the user to share using this app from any other app.

To summarize the key pros and cons of Android and iOS:

iOS pros and cons

• Massiveappecosystem:distinctadvantagefortabletapps while on smartphones popular apps are usually available for both platforms

• Deeper integrationwith Facebook andTwitter: it iseasier to post updates and share on social networks using iOS than Android because of how deeply integrated these platforms are with iOS.

• iOS-only apps like Passbook, FaceTime, andmobilepayments app Square (available on iOS 3GS,4,4S,5 and up, nut only for a limited Android phones)

• Interface is locked down: Limited customizationoptions for the home screens; only rows of app icons are allowed. No third-party apps are pre-installed by the wireless carrier. Users can only install apps from the App Store

• Software upgrades: Apple offers software upgradesto all devices that have the hardware capable of handling the new software.

Android Pros and Cons• Massive hardware selection: A large number of

Android devices are available at various price points, with varying hardware capabilities, screen sizes and features.

• Highly customizable user experience: The homescreen can be customized with not just app icons but widgets that allow the user to stay connected or informed. Other examples include SwiftKey, which modifies your Android smartphone’s keyboard, and apps that emulate older gaming consoles. Google has fewer restrictions than Apple on what kinds of apps it allows in its Play store. Moreover, you can choose to install Android apps from places other than the Google Play store.

Several prominent people have shifted from iPhone to Android. Android’s connection to the Google ecosystem of services is strong and arguably more useful compared with Apple’s cloud services suite.

It seems like the sub 10k category is getting hotter and better. Not only the Chinese and Indian brands but the big players like Nokia, Samsung, HTC, Sony and now Motorola are looking at this category and trying to capture it with their aggressive price strategies,

which makes things very excited and competitive in this category.

After HTC and Microsoft launched its Dual SIM variants in this category few days back. Motorola simply took the limelight away from them by launching Moto E on Flipkart in India. And India was the first market where Moto E was unveiled followed by launches in five other countries in the world

Raising the bar for the entry level smartphones:With the launch of Moto E the market scenario has totally changed in under
