With more and more end users going in for converged lifestyles, mobility will continue to command huge interest among managed services customers in 2013, and a good mobile device management (MDM)

strategy will be more important than ever. Here are some of the tech trends that will elevate mobility further ahead.

•Cloud Fusion — Traditional virtual private network (VPN) methods are on the way out, and distributed data centers, and the intelligent wired and mobile networks that connect them, now represent a viable alternative, according to Verizon. In 2013, there will be a shift from VPNs to public, private, and hybrid clouds.

•Mobile Majority Taking Charge — A lot of employees now use two or more mobile devices for work. In addition, the lives of employees will be torn between their work and private lives. Mobility strategies will be adopted by companies to adapt to this change. To accommodate the merge, companies will be forced to be more proactive in tackling the possible challenges.

•Connected Machines — What helps you make decisions in your company? Data — plain and simple. The ability to collect, store and analyze overwhelming volumes of data will define which enterprises extract the best insights and make the most agile decisions, to their competitive advantage. To gain an upper hand, enterprises will need to work with vendors with strong and global ecosystems.

•Smarter Networks — Intelligent fabric that connects everything and everyone will render underlying networks invisible to end users.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has stated that the recently released

BioInitiative Report 2012 is just an update on their 2007 report which had been heavily criticized as being biased, without balance and for not being an objective comprehensive review, or a weight-of-evidence assessment. Several credible Health Organizations across the world had disowned the 2007 version of the report as having clear scientific weaknesses including selection bias in several research areas, lack of multidisciplinary weight-of evidence method which leads to a scientifically sound judgment, lack of updated info, no consideration of the scientific quality of the cited reports, amongst others.

The 2012 BioInitiative Report, like its predecessor, is an informal interpretation of a limited selection of the available scientific information on electromagnetic fields (EMF).

The report is largely critical of the internationally accepted and most widely adopted EMF exposure standards developed by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which have been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), and the International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

The report does not include any new scientific data but reflects the interpretations of individual authors who do not have consensus among themselves.

McAfee’s Threat Predictions for 2013

In the wake of rising threats, it is important for everyone to be geared

with new cyber challenges that would arise in the New Year. Kindly refer below for 2013 predictions for the enterprise sector by Mr. Jagdish Mahapatra, MD, McAfee India & SAARC

Top 10 Enterprise Security Predictions1. Targeted Attacks: 2012 saw an

increased growth in targeted attacks that proved successful in disrupting service and fraudulently obtaining significant amounts of intellectual property.

2. Signed malware: Signed malware was prevalent in 2012 and this is likely to continue. Signed malware is present when a hacker obtains a digital certificate from an organization and appends it to malware, allowing the malware to pass through an organization’s operating system.

3. Big business at risk: Enterprises can be at a higher risk of an attack as there is often a greater attack surface and more ‘visibility gaps’ in their security posture.

4. Non-Windows attacks: Android devices are now the highest selling mobile devices in the Asia Pacific market and hackers

will take advantage of that by developing mobile malware.

5. Ransomware: This will also be prevalent in 2013. Ransomware is operated by encrypting files on a victim’s computer which can only be unlocked by paying the criminals a ‘fine’.

6. Impact of changing regulations: According to the Reserve Bank of India report released in January 2011, the regulator acknowledges that given the increasing reliance of customers on electronic delivery channels to conduct transactions, any security related issues have the potential to undermine public confidence in the use of e-banking channels and lead to reputation risks to the banks.

7. Need for incident response: In 2013, I expect organizations will have to review their processes for dealing with a targeted attack. If the organization falls foul from a targeted attack or Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) they will need to adopt a process of incident response and many organizations don’t necessarily have the technologies in place to ensure timely investigation and remediation is possible.

8. Security Process Automation: With an increasing number, variety and complexity of the threats faced by organizations, many security technologies still require significant hands-on management. We expect that IT managers will have to embrace security automation in order to keep up.

9. Connected Devices: We also anticipate the growth in number and variety of new connected devices will provide additional gateways for hackers to access personal or business networks – these ‘connected devices’ include connected homes and connected cars.

10. Bring Your Own Application (BYOA): With BYOD comes Bring Your Own Applications where many employees are now downloading Apps within the organization. As a result IT Administrators are losing control of what tools and applications are used inside the Enterprise and business users (often lacking in an understanding of the potential security risks these applications can pose) are becoming their own system administrators.

Beam Money, a mobile money payment system, has launched Cash-On-Deliver (COD)

service for purchasing. This facility will enable customers to receive Beam Money at their doorsteps giving them the convenience to pay for anything, anytime, anywhere using their mobile on the go. Beam money is witnessing an annual growth rate of 100% in terms of revenues.

“COD service has been introduced to deliver convenience right to the customers’ doorstep. COD will add a new stream of offline customers particularly the ones who either do not have credit/debit cards or Internet Banking or are reluctant using the same online. This will also give Beamers an option to gift Beam Money to others. Furthermore as most customers generally spend freely on gifting and new household items but do not find time for mundane tasks like utility bill payments, telecom, DTH recharge, etc, Beam with its pan India network and COD service makes such chores easier,” said Mr. Anand Shrivastav, CMD, Beam Money Pvt. Ltd.

COD service is currently available for all customers in most major towns across India, e.g. Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune, Chennai, Chandigarh, Hyderabad, Ahmadabad and Vishakhapatnam with more cities being added rapidly.

Beam Money is a revolutionary mobile payment system that allows its customers to transact at Anytime, from Anywhere, and with Anyone. Mobile payment system is like a mobile valet. Beam turns mobile phone into the most sophisticated and safest valet in the world. It lets persons shop without cash, pay utility bills, recharge mobile/DTH-TV, book travel tickets, and much more, all from your mobile.

Beam Money is authorized by RBI and its services include telecom/DTH recharges, utility bill payments, travel bookings, e-commerce shopping, domestic money transfers, cinema booking, etc. A wide range of purchases and financial transactions can be carried out using your mobile phone without paperwork. Mobile payment system saves you time, effort and money. Using mobile payment you can transfer money to you debit card or credit card.

Mr. Anand Shrivastav believes NFC (Near Field Communication) system does not work in the Indian conditions, at least for another 5 years due various reasons. Mr. Shrivastav opines, “NFC (Near Field Communication) way of money transfer cannot be a success in India. There is a risk of it being misused by unauthorized persons. Even abroad, only certain monopolistic organizations could install the terminals in a wide area. For example, in Japan the railways owns wide network

of NFC terminals and could successfully operate. Next, substantial number of shops or merchants should have those instruments. Then only customers will take membership. In India, I believe NFC will not establish itself as a potential service for at least another 5 years.”

Mr. Shrivastav asserts, “At present Beam’s annual revenue growth rate is 100%. Right now Beam has 10 million customers and 50,000 channel partners. Our channel partners include housewives, to retail shops, to big regional and national distributors. By 2017 we want to expand our partner base to 600,000. Our mobility payment facility is having tremendous acceptance from the customers.”

Regarding competition, Mr. Anand Shrivastav says, “We always welcome competition. We never shun completion. Good competition encourages us to be more alert and innovative. Our people will work hard and become more inventive in serving the customers.”

Beam is looking to march forward in mobile payment market with confidence and success.

Zen Focus Unfurls myZenTab for Indian MarketZen Focus’s 3 USPs for their myZenTab: Quality, Robustness and Affordability

Zen Focus has recently in 2012 launched 3 consumer tablets: myZenTAB 708B, myZenTAB 708BH and myZenTAB

773B. In 2011, Zen Focus launched their own tab for enterprise customers with brand name myZenTAB brand that can meet the enterprise customer demands, mainly for healthcare and retail segments. After their success of enterprise tab, in 2012 Zen Focus forayed into customer tab market. They hired designers in-house and made considerable investments that led to design of the myZenTAB with following FOUR key principles:

• It should be simple• It should be smart• It should be robust• It should be affordableOther objectives were that the tablets

should be at least 30% cheaper than the tablets from leading brands of the industry. Zen Focus’ management team has not only focused on the product quality and cost, but have also established service network all across India to provide the post-sales warranty and support. The company is also working with leading distributors and wholesalers to distribute the product on all India basis.

Now Zen Focus is focusing on aggressively promoting consumer tablets in the Indian market. For the next 1 year, the company plans to come up with several new models and continually add new features according to the changing market and consumers needs.

According to, Mr Mike Dhall, President and CEO, Zen Focus, “There is tremendous competition in Tablet market. That also implies there is tremendous opportunity and business. In fact, competition makes us more innovative and alert.”

Mr Mike differentiates tablet market in three segments: 1. Those who use tables for communication and using it while moving or on mobility, 2. Specialized services: Sales automation, loan processing, health care, crime prevention, engineering and government use, etc. and 3. Consumer electronics: using tablet as a portable TV, small DVD player, game console, scanner, etc. Right now their main focus is on the 1st and 3rd segments.

Mike affirms, “Strictly speaking Zen Focus has just 3 USPs: Quality, Quality and Quality—both in terms of product and post sales service, but Zen Focus also focuses on robustness and affordability.” He does not believe in providing cheap products with

poor quality. He believes in the famous marketing fact every satisfied customer tells 1 or 2 friends, but every dissatisfied customer tells 10 to 20 others. Opportunity costs of dissatisfied customers are several times higher than benefits from satisfied customers. Mr Mike says, “Today’s customers want quality. They are ready to pay higher prices for better quality product than buying cheap products which will enter junk after a few months. For example my daughter purchased a tablet and within 2 weeks it started malfunctioning and servicing from that was not available and tab had to be junked. We focus on best after sales service. We rarely get complaints about our products regarding their operations and functions. But if the customer finds even slight manufacturing defect in our product, we simply replace the product with a new one, rather than repairing or patching.”

Regarding appointing a brand ambassador, Mike quips, “Instead of paying 10 million rupees to a brand ambassador, I would like to invest the same in quality improvement, better service to the customers,

and good training and decent margins to my channel partners.”

Outside India, Zen Focus has sold over 60,000 consumer tablets since Oct 2012. In India, Zen Focus launched consumer tablets only recently, so it is too soon to judge the volumes. On the enterprise side they sold 6000 tablets abroad and 3000 tablets in India since 2011

About channel strategy, “We provide good training and decent margins to our channel partners. We indeed treat them as an extended wing of our company, rather than as partners. We need such channel partners who can understand everything about the tablets, their functionalities and uses. We want our partners to thoroughly and patiently educate the end users. We are not looking for partners who just want push the product by hook or crook.”

In addition, Zen Focus is also working on releasing low-cost, robust mobile phones that will provide an excellent alternative to the customers to leverage the 3G and now 4G network in India.

Whiter Indian Manufacturing

Even though, the government of India has now clearly come out with its preferential market access (PMA) policy, much needs to be done on the ground level and India still yearns local manufacturing

As we move to year 2013, one question looms large: can we sustain the growth trajectory in 2013? In order for the country to grow

undeterred, it must develop its manufacturing sector and create millions of new employment opportunities for the Indian youth.Ironically, though considered vital to the

country’s growth, Indian manufacturing has contributed only about 15% to the GDP compared to services (about 57%). In light of this, the government’s initiative, the National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) seeks to increase the role of this sector in the country’s growth. When we talk about Indian manufacturing,

Simmtronics is one company which has truly believed in realizing India’s potential for local manufacturing. The company has engaged itself towards manufacturing tablet PCs in India and has become a role model for the overall IT sector.According to Indrajit Sabharwal, Managing

Director, Simmtronics, “Our plan hopes to encourage manufacturing to thrive in India so that it can spur the growth of the country at a faster rate and have a multiplier effect on the Indian economy. India is a young country with over 60% of population in the working age group of 15-59 years. India will have to create 220-250 million jobs between now and 2025 if it has to exploit its demographic dividend. We are completely committed towards engaged ourselves in local manufacturing capabilities in the country,” he adds on.According to Mr Milind Shah, CEO, WishTel,

budget tablet market specially is mushrooming with companies offering customised solutions to their customers at very affordable and attractive pricing. Design and performance are the key factors that consumers consider after affordability and use. “Any company offering the best affordable product which is highly effective, performance driven and has a great design is the leader. Being a developing country, there are several social issues prevailing in our nation and how to dissolve the issues should be our prime focus as a true Indian branded tablet. Education in India has been a long standing challenge with a growing population that struggles with poor infrastructure, low quality of teachers and availability of good quality study material. He also feels that now, it’s the ideal

time to bring about the much needed revolution in the entire educational delivery system. “Today, education need not be restricted to the textbook method of learning, and it should be extended to Internet. Our objective as a technology and manufacturing company is to create

affordable range of products that can contribute to Society by extending Education for free and without boundaries. We also want to take advanced technology to such parts of world where every stratum of the society can access our products at an affordable

price. Wishtel intend to offers solutions to Universities and Schools worldwide and empower every student with a PC enabling them to learn and educate themselves beyond textbooks, access and create their own knowledge,” he adds on.Talking about the Indian manufacturing scenario,

Mr Nafis Kazim, Chief Operating Officer, Shyam Networks Limited says that in today’s scenario keeping in mind India market, tablet is highly B2B centric and therefore needs specific customization of software rather than hardware manufacturing capability. We feel that such Indian companies which are focused on B2B clientage can sustain in this market by giving segment specific solution,” he adds on.

have come out with new inventions- whether it’s new products or gadgets that have brought about a revolution in India.“These players have cached on to

the niche audiences who have the spending power. On the other hand, Indian players have made a significant mark in the industry with their vast product offerings. This technological boom has caught

the frenzy of people and people are exposed to the world of technology like never before. First it was the advent of radio and television, then came in feature phones and now it’s the era of smart phones and tablets where many players have jumped the bandwagon with their unique offerings. With so many options available in the market,

living up to the expectations of the users yet providing them all that you need at the most competitive price, I feel is the biggest challenge. At the end of the day, it’s the consumer and his needs that matters,” he explains.India’s tablet PC market is expected to double to

6million units in 2013 from the 3million units in 2012. Budget tablets form the major chunk of the market share. Education, BFSI, pharmaceuticals have been the major sectors who have adopted increasing use of Tablets. “This proves that the Indian Brands have been

fairly expected in the market which is expected to grow at a faster than expected pace. In just 10months of our foray into the tablet market, Wishtel has shipped close to 80k tablets in the country through

a wide distribution network of over 400 distributors’ across India. With government’s encouragement to adopt low cost devices and many Indian companies introducing a growing numbers of affordable Tablets in the market, popularity of the device amongst budget-sensitive consumers has increased and is expected to sustain. Portability, connectivity, high efficiency& varied utility of the product will drive its adoption in the coming years,” Shah explains.Speaking about the challenges in the Indian

manufacturing segment, Mr Nafis Kazim says that since the hardware prices for all Tablet manufacturers are about the same it becomes at times difficult to counter a customer on price targets. We believe that soon the Indian competence of software development / customization will be playing a vital role in Tablet’s imbedded with segment specific software meeting India’s requirements. Local manufacturers could lose out on nearly $200 billion of potential revenue during 2011-2015 period, says a report from ISA.

India’s electronic products manufacturing sector could shrink by as much as 6.7% in revenue by 2015 with the increase in consumption being more than offset by imports, according to a report, indicating that government efforts aimed at boosting the domestic industry may not succeed.

Local manufacturers could lose out on nearly $200 billion (around `11 trillion today) of potential revenue in the 2011-2015 period, according to the report by India Semiconductor Association (ISA) in association with researcher Frost and Sullivan. The study covers a range of segments, including semiconductor design,

electronic components and electronic manufacturing services, apart from consumer electronics products.

The overall electronics products industry, including imports, will grow by a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% to $94.2 billion by 2015 from $64.6 billion in 2011. Out of this, imports are expected to rise 50% to $42 billion by 2015, according to the study.

manufacturing eco system driven and India clearly lacks the basic infrastructure and regulatory condition. Therefore the choice of getting the hardware partly or fully produced in India has many challenges on price / economy of scale challenges,” he explains.

India and ChinaIt is possible to manufacture a tablet in India.

WishTel is proud to mention the Made in India tag on most of its packaging. “WishTel has a manufacturing unit in Mahape in Navi Mumbai. Some of the components like the LCD / LED screens that cannot be developed or manufactured in India at the moment logistically are imported from our partners abroad. However the motherboard which forms the main component of any device is manufactured in India at our Mahape Unit. 100 of other components that form the mother board are stitched on the mother board mechanically and these mother boards once ready are then mechanically and manually tested. Each mother board passes three tests and then the device is assembled at the assembling unit,” shah adds on.

What Future Holds“The first three months of 2013 our focus will be

to launch PrithV enable devices (tablets and netbooks) in the market. We have set a goal of reaching out to 2lakh students with PrithV tablets by the end of 2013 and we are working all ends to make this possible. Post the first quarter, we do have some interesting products lined up for budget as well as above 10K range but its too early to talk about them right now,” Shah from Wishtel adds on.According to Mr Nafis Kazim from Shyam Networks

Limited, the future looks bright as the government has shown a lot of courage and character when it comes to developing and nurturing the manufacturing eco-system. “We are glad that the government of India has taken decision to implement the “Preferential Market Access” (PMA) policy to gradually do component level manufacturing in India in a phased manner. We have success stories around clinching orders from Europe, Latin America and Africa. Again the market there expects embedding of specific software to be a

differentiator in the market place. Currently we have three models namely 7” Wi-Fi, 7” 3G and 9.7” Wi-Fi. Going forward we intend to launch 7” 2G for calling and 8” Tab in the Indian market,” he explains.

The New PolicyThe new National Manufacturing Policy (NMP)

with its National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZ) has been approved and comes at a crucial time with the country facing a lower gross national product (GNP) growth compared to the recent past and smaller net inflow of foreign investment.Improving manufacturing makes sense: manufacturing

is not only connected to other sectors but is also the jewel of a multi-strand necklace where the strands are flows of different kinds to and from other sectors. The government of India is taking a holistic

approach to manufacturing, considering the different flows needed to make India a major economy. However, the government must further consider

such initiatives as creating an Internet superhighway, virtual manufacturing zones to support IT solutions for industry clusters and finding supply-chain finance solutions to help tier-2 suppliers. In addition, the government must further skills

development for the manufacturing sector for the long term. While considering different flows – that of materials, information, cash, skills, land use and even prosperityWhile the government’s recently retracted retail policy

was touted to help the agriculture sector, it would have also helped the manufacturing sector to get end products sold, without which the sector cannot make intermediate goods either. Still, the government must be commended on its vision and continuing efforts on this front.Manufacturing also needs the flow of information for

orders, order status, and deliveries. Although the rest of the world depends on India for many IT needs, there is very little evidence of IT use within the country. True, many Indians now have Twitter, Gmail or Facebook accounts, but these are not enough for manufacturing. But before we get Cloud Computing for manufacturers,

we will need access to the Internet, a cheap and now ubiquitous way to exchange information – compared to the expensive and awkward electronic data interchange (EDI).Although Indian telecom majors

have provided mobile phones at much lower cost to Indian consumers relative to the West, the quality of Internet access is poor and cost is high relative to the West. It may well be that, as in the US or Korea, the government or the public sector will have to step in by providing Internet “superhighways” and cheap access in order to help the overall segment to grow exponentially.

“With government’s encouragement to adopt low cost devices and many Indian companies introducing a growing numbers of affordable Tablets in the market, popularity of the device amongst budget-sensitive consumers has increased and is expected to sustain.”

Tech CES Trends That Will Define Year 2013Happening at the world’s

capital of glamour and flamboyance – the city of

Las Vegas, the Consumer Electronics Show gives the world a preview of the flood of gadgets heading our way in the coming year and beyond. Some are incredibly stupid,

while others are complete game changers in their own right. All promise to make people's lives better somehow. We are presenting some of the big technology trend setting gadgets that are set to define the technology ground for year 2013.

Motorheadphones ($49-$129, out in April) - Celebrity-endorsed headphones are p r o l i f e r a t i n g this year. The challenge for folks will be how to cut through the glamour to find a pair with as much high quality sound to match the level

of hype. Our recommendation would be to listen to them for yourselves. Many premium headphones pump up the bass. But if you're a rock lover, an

emphasis on the thumping, driving bass can come at the expense of mid-range sound - and can alter other qualities of the music. Motorheadphones, endorsed by the eponymous band, dial that bass down to focus on the mid-range, promising that rock fans can hear the music "the way it's meant to be heard," a marketing mantra that will no doubt hit many ears this year.

Sony Xperia Z with One Touch (price varies by carrier, out by March 31) - Sony, which has struggled to compete in the smartphone category against Apple, Samsung and others, is trying again with the Xperia Z. This time, Sony added One Touch, which lets users who are listening to music or watching video on the device transfer that over to other Sony devices by touching them together. Using near-field communication (NFC), the Xperia Z can "hand off" the video or the music to Sony TV's or stereos that also have One Touch so users can continue to listen or watch on a bigger screen or a better audio system. One Touch is an example of how devices are increasingly able to "talk" to each other, a trend that we saw in spades at CES this year. An oven that has reached a certain temperature can, for example, can flash that message to the TV.

B r o o k s t o n e S o f t S o u n d pillow ($129, out in May) - Audio is being embedded into everything - even pillows. Brooks tone's

SoftSound pillow has two high fidelity, ultra-thin speakers inside

that can wirelessly receive and transmit sound coming from a nearby television set. Many people like to drift to sleep with the TV on, but their bedmate may not be so thrilled about having the TV blaring. SoftSound is designed so that

audio can be heard if the person's head is on the pillow, but muffled everywhere else. The pillow is heavy, but comfortable - using the

company's existing memory foam-like material. And even better, you can set a timer to automatically turn off the set, so your slumber isn't disturbed by late night

infomercials.

P a n a s o n i c B o n e Conducting Headphones ( P r i c e u n k n o w n ,

releasing this fall) - One of the big themes at CES this year is how existing technologies get mashed up to become more useful. The Panasonic Bone Conducting Headphones is one great example.

It pairs up Bluetooth wireless technology with bone conduction to deliver personalized audio for its TV sets. That means, for instance, two people watching the same show in the same room can get different levels of audio.

iRiver ON earbud and heart-

monitor ($199, release in March) – Gadgets that help users monitor

their health has been a major theme for the past year. In 2013, expect entertainment to play a larger role in this trend, helping to boost the fun-factor and make health and fitness less of a drudge. iriver, a South Korean electronics company that made one of the first digital music players in 2000 and had the largest market share for that category until Apple came around with its iPod, teamed up with Valencell Inc.

Ford Sync AppLink — Connected in-car entertainment is blossoming this year. For the driver, there is a panoply of music and audio entertainment optionsbeing directly integrated into the dashboard of new cars rolling off the assembly line. For rear-seat passengers, video and games are added to the mix.

This is not new. What will be different in 2013, however, is the amount of streaming content that can easily find their way into the car, thanks to efforts by car companies such as Ford and General Motors to turn vehicles into platforms that developers can distribute their applications. Both car companies announced at CES that they are opening up their in-car software platforms to outside developers.

Rural Connectivity Holds Key to Unlocking India’s Connectivity Potential

With a population of 800 million that generates in a GDP of over `600,000 crores, rural India represents a huge potential in terms of putting India at the forefront of the most

powerful nations of the modern times. And in such a scenario, connectivity is holds the key towards harnessing the potential of its enormous human resources.India now has more than a billion people. However, it only

has limited telephones and Internet connections. Even these are concentrated in urban areas. Therefore, in this race for connectivity, rural India is somewhere getting left behind as the world races towards an information-led global economy. The last few years have shown more clearly than ever before

that the telephone and Internet are no longer merely means of communication. These represent power. Electronic information itself yields millions

of rupees, provides employment, training, healthcare and education to hundreds of thousands of people as well as helps to build the economy of nations. It has thus become imperative to connect individuals in rural India with the outside world at the earliest. In fact, lack of access to the Internet is going to create strong divides within India.

India’s Telecom AffordabilityThe first question that bothers us is – What has hindered the

large-scale spread of telephony thus far? Till around two years ago, a telephone operator had to spend around Rs.30,000 per line as infrastructure cost to provide telecom services to a subscriber.Taking into account finance charges on the investment (15%),

depreciation (10%), and operation and maintenance cost (10%), an operator needed at least 35% of the initial investment as yearly revenue to just break even! If to this is added license fee and taxes, the revenue per subscriber needed to be at least `1,000 a month.

Now, what percentage of Indian households could afford this? Therefore, homes in western countries have been fully wired up

quite sometime back. Now, reducing the cost further no longer expands their market. The R&D focus abroad has naturally shifted to service the replacement market, where the focus is on offering more and more features and services rather than lower cost products. It became obvious that if India were to cut down the costs of installing a telephone line, R&D would have to be driven from within the country, focused on cost reduction rather than addition of features keeping the cost constant. Indian industry and scientists would have to come together to provide the resources and drive to design and deploy low cost technology that best caters to Indian conditions. On an average, one fibre optic connected rural exchange caters

to 150 sq. km. Thus, on an average a 7 km radius around an exchange would cover most rural areas. A wireless system with 10 km range, if installed at existing fibre optic connected exchanges, would cover 80-85% of the villages in India.States like Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttar

Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal have over 300 people per sq. km in rural areas. Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Orissa have 200-250 people per sq. km.Therefore a system that would connect a 10 km radius would

serve at least 80,000 persons in most rural areas. Assuming the need for one Internet connection per 500 people, roughly 150 connections would have to be served by base stations in an exchange area. Thus, the base infrastructure and exchange has to be cost effective even if only 150 connections are deployed in an area.

If we look at the healthcare segment, Ultra-mobile slate tablets enable healthcare professionals to

carry and access the full power of a thin and light networked computer instead of a clipboard or unwieldy patient file, bringing up-to-the-minute patient information to the point of care.Tablets save time, reduce errors

and ensure that the most up-to-date information stays at clinicians’ fingertips throughout all stages of the care delivery process. Other benefits include:• Increased clinician mobility and accessibility

• Automation of key forms, processes and workflows

• Greater access to data at the point of care

• Elimination of duplicate efforts• Facilitation of real-time communications

• Improvements in patient charge capture

Whether cruising the corridors of a large hospital or dashing between exam rooms, slates quickly become invaluable clinical productivity tools for physicians. Access real-time patient data on the fly, update patient records as you go, and keep reference materials such as diagnostic aids and drug data

at your fingertips throughout the day or night.Additionally, tablets enable nurses

to collect, maintain and retrieve comprehensive patient records easily and efficiently. In hospitals, tablets help nurses stay organized, collect vitals, automate medication distribution, and look up critical information at the point of care.In clinics, tablets provide anywhere-

access to appointment and resource scheduling information, and also help ensure comprehensive and accurate patient data collection to assist with treatment.Tablet PCs help to improve

Health Care segments Going Strong on Tablets

productivity and quality of care across a variety of usage models, including:1. Patient registration and medical history data collection

2. Appointment scheduling and resource planning

3. Billing capture and insurance claims processing

4. Clinical documentation, including nursing rounds

5. Chart retrieval, review and collaboration between clinicians

6. Collaboration and note taking during staff meetings

7. Medication administration and specimen collection management

8. Remote, computerized entry of pharmaceutical and lab work orders

9. Post-acute clinician mobility10. Mobile image review and consultation

Tablet PC-enabled patient check-in and information gathering reduces administrative staff time requirements, and also eliminates the need for duplicate data entry. Solutions to improve the efficiency of patient check-in range from integrating slate tablets into self-service kiosks to replacing a clipboard and sheaves of paper in the waiting room with slates equipped with forms to record patient data using the patients’ own handwriting.Patients may also feel more

comfortable entering highly personal data directly into the database application on a tablet rather than knowing it will be read and re-typed by someone at the front desk.Appointment scheduling and

resource planning modules are key components in hospital IT and practice management software applications. Tablets provide “anywhere access” to scheduling information, empowering doctors, nurses and reception staff to keep a close eye on their calendars, thereby keeping the clinical work flow moving as planned.Practice management functions

such as inter-office communications and resource planning can also be seamlessly integrated into Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) applications. Both EMRs and EHRs often integrate billing functions into the main data collection application. Most importantly, it is a tablet’s

ability to do multi-tasking that is

helping them gain the importance and fan following in the healthcare segment. The ability to perform on-the-spot capture of the provision of services with associated billing implications is a key benefit of tablet PCs. In the competitive world of

medicine, health care administrators and providers need to keep a watchful eye on the bottom line. Not only can tablets bring about cost savings through productivity increases, but carrying a tablet PC throughout the care delivery process can also increase revenues by ensuring that all billable charges are captured in real-time.In addition, tablets can improve

efficiencies in documenting and filing insurance claims. Processing insurance claims takes a significant amount of administrative time, but is the activity that is responsible for generating a large portion of a hospital’s or clinic’s revenue stream. Therefore, hospitals and clinics

benefit from deploying technologies that help them quickly and thoroughly provide documentation to substantiate the provision of services submitted on insurance claims. With a tablet, handwritten notes,

written diagrams and annotations on medical images can help to provide a greater level of claims documentation, satisfying the stringent requirements of payers. The benefits related to capturing

billable charges and facilitating insurance claims with tablets include:• Eliminating the need to remember and document activities after-the-fact because caregivers can capture and document activities as they happen.

• Using handwritten notes to augment claims data, thereby eliminating long paper trails.

• Determining more quickly which services are reimbursable and locating activity codes quickly to speed up the filing of paperwork.

• Submitting claims faster, which can shorten reimbursement cycles from payers.

• Lowering administrative support costs associated with insurance claims processing.

Real-time tracking of patient information allows medical practitioners to access information about previous conditions, allergies, concurrent

medications and more, before making new diagnostic decisions or determining treatment paths, thereby helping to improve patient safety and increase recovery speed. In addition, integrating PC-card-based or wireless-based diagnostics tools and processes into EMR applications can reduce diagnostic workstation costs, simplify workflows, and improves the accuracy of data collected on rounds. The benefits of deploying tablets

to assist with clinical documentation activities include:• Increased clinician mobility, accessibility, and productivity, which can lead to higher patient satisfaction ratings.

• Increased efficiency by enabling faster discharge and transfer processes between different stages of care delivery.

• Improved quality of patient care through greater access to information and reduction in diagnostic and treatment errors.

• Greater profitability due to reducing the amount of administrative work required per patient and increasing the capture of billable charges.

Tablets deliver higher levels of post-acute clinician mobility and usage flexibility to busy surgeons, specialists, primary care physicians, and nurses. “Anywhere access” for clinical information and test results enables greater productivity and improvements in patient service and outcomes.On-the-go clinicians are able to

complete all care documentation at the actual point of care, improving documentation quality and throughput. Natural pen input enables clinicians to complete forms documentation while standing in the hallway or sitting with a patient - in substantially less time with natural pen input. With wireless slates, clinicians are

equipped with an ideal mobile platform to grant them instant access to digital images from anywhere.Fast, mobile access to patient

x-rays and other digital images enables clinicians to discuss conditions, conduct comparative studies, consult with other professionals, and educate patients quickly and easily.Commuting medical specialists are

also able to conduct Mobile Image Reviews and Consultations more easily and access images remotely.

Short Messaging Service or SMS have literally changed the way we communicate today. Be it a smartphone or a feature phone, SMS is the most used feature in a mobile phone today.

Usually an SMS pack that gives 1000 SMSes for 30 days costs anywhere from `50 to 90 but during festivals, such packs become invalid, thus requiring users to pay as much as `1 or more per each SMS.

However, for Android smartphones there are applications using which you can send free SMSes to your near and dear ones that too during festival season. One such application is the 'Free SMS India' which is available for free of cost from Google Play Store.

The app has a very small install size of just 250 KB. The application supports nine popular free SMS gateways including 160 by 2, full on sms, SMS 440 and many more so all you need to do is connect to one or more SMS gateways and this application will utilise it to send out the SMS.

The application allows users to either login or to register to any of the available gateways i n order to start the service. Once the service i s active, all you need to do is to use this application instead of regular SMS to save money. Although there is no cost involved on sending of SMS through this application, users require a working internet connection which can either be in GPRS or WiFi for this application to function.

The app does not cause any problems or interferes with any function of the smartphone in any way. I t does not slow your device down even a little bit either. Interested users can head to the Google Play store to download this application. Or you can go to the below link t o download this application as well.

Whether it is living creatures or electronic devices, evolution comes to everything eventually. Cameras started with photographic plates, then moved on to films and then

to digital. And today the digital cameras have also evolved in to something more with added features like GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth etc.

Samsung has gone ahead and created a whole new category of smart cameras with the launch of the Galaxy Camera GC100, combining the benefits of both smartphones and cameras.

The Samsung Galaxy camera allows users to edit images on the device itself, rather than the conventional procedure of editing pictures afterwards on a computer. Users can simply click pictures, edit them with the help of software applications available on Android platform and immediately share them with friends and family through services like Dropbox, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and much more.

But if you are still hesitant to shell out close to `30,000 for this, then read on.

In Galaxy camera, you have to press the flash to open or close it. The pop up flash might sound too technical but there is minimal tech used in this as it's a simple hardware lock system that holds the flash in place and it requires a simple push to open itself.

Driving better value for the end users, LG has delivered decent, value for money

Android phones in the past, with the Optimus One P500 being one of the more popular ones, but only with moderate success. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and seeing the success Samsung has achieved with the Galaxy Note, LG has decided to take that route in hopes of wooing some undecided customers.

The Optimus Vu is by no means an ordinary smartphone; in fact, we doubt it even qualifies as one, or even a phablet for that matter. Unlike the Galaxy Note, which still maintains its 16:9 aspect ratio, the Optimus Vu sports a 4:3 aspect ratio. Any sense of ergonomics goes for a toss here when you pack a 5-inch screen with this aspect ratio.

The Vu has a row of four capacitive buttons below the screen—the first three being the same as the ones on the Galaxy Nexus and the fourth one being the ‘Option’ menu. The design and build leaves a lot to be desired and sadly, this is one area where LG has a long way to go before it can even think of competing with the likes of HTC.

Like many of the newer handsets, the Optimus Vu comes with Android 4.0.4 and LG's own Optimus UI. The UI is similar to what we saw on the 4X HD; it is functional and simple to use. The new lockscreen gets a cool little animation and you can unlock it by sliding your finger anywhere on the screen. The toggle switches in the notification bar are a nice touch and you can even edit, add and replace them.

Samsung Series 7 Slate PC XE700T1A – The Smooth Tab

The days of bulky laptops and tablet computers are certainly behind us now thanks to the

tablet revolution that has taken place over the past couple of years. Starting with Android, then BlackBerry and iOS; now Windows 8 is the latest operating system to join the tablet wars.

The Windows RT has enabled devices to get a lot of full-fledged PC like functionality, but at the same time has made them absolutely portable as well. The Samsung Slate PC, for instance, carries a lot of muscle when it comes to computing power, but ultimately it's an 11.6 inch tablet that makes things portable and productive.

Weighing almost 900 grams, and without any physical keyboard the Samsung Slate is not too light, but in comparison with most notebooks and ultraportable devices it is lightweight and very functional. The tablet's width of 11.6 inches puts the center of gravity further away from the hands, making it a bit cumbersome for long use.

The Slate PC XE700T1A is directly aimed at users who wish for portability above anything else and the tablet manages that with ease. The big bold design of the tablet looks good and the flush front of its 11.6 inch display looks great as well. The back of the device features a brushed metal finish that gives it some protection from scratches and fingerprints but does not make it immune to scratches like any texturised back would have done.

Apple iPad mini Review – The Elegant Choice

Apple has never been known to abide by industry trends; instead, they have always been known to be trend setters more than followers. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

are three very good examples of products that have sparked innovation in their respective segment.

The iPad mini measures about 7.9-inches diagonally and features an LED-backlit IPS panel. The aspect remains the same as its big brother so apps don’t need any changing. Apple has chosen to go with a very slim bezel for the sides so they could squeeze in a larger display in a chassis that’s similar to a 7-inch tablet. This makes the screen appear a lot bigger but it does make it a bit tricky to use in portrait mode as the sides of your thumb invariably tend to hit the screen.

The mini is incredibly thin at just 7.2mm in depth and light as well at just 308g. It’s possibly one of the lightest tablets out there like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 310 and the Google Nexus 7. Because of this aspect alone, the iPad mini feels wonderful in your hand. This also makes it a very good option as an eReader, as

those who have the habit of reading books while sleeping will not experience too much fatigue even for extended periods of time. The sides house the volume toggle switch along with the switch to toggle silent mode. The power and 3.5-mm headphone jack sit on the top while on the bottom, we have the mic, speaker and the new Lightning Connector.

The Apple iPad mini runs iOS 6.0.1 and the look and feel is just like you’d find on a standard iPad. We’ve covered the important features in detail in the past along with a comparison with other mobile OS' so we won’t delve too much into those today. Suffice to say the UI is quick and fluid and this time around and like the Retina iPad, you also get Siri as part of the package.

Beating underneath all this glass and aluminium is the same A5 SoC we’ve seen in the iPad 2. This consists of dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 chip along with a PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics chip. The SoC still manages to pack a punch for most apps but newer ones that are designed for the faster Retina iPad and above tend to frame a lot, especially games.
