Despite the growing landscape of Mongolian cinema today, one key elementis still missing, and that is avant-gardism.Originally in the French language, avant-garde is a military term used to refer tothe front lines. The word has since beenadopted into the lexicon of modern artand has come to mean the artists who shedconvention and lead the way into newideas.

In cinema, avant-garde lmmakersare the ones who are unafraid to break traditional forms and explore new ways of cinematic expression. This is done throughexperimental lms, the nest of whichhave revitalized the world of cinema withnew styles and forms in the past.

To rectify the lack of avant-garde andexperimental lms in Mongolian cinematoday, the Altan Halis Association organized

the rst Underground Film Competition.Open to anyone and everyone with acamera and a voice. Online submissionsare currently being accepted. Shortexperimental or avant-garde lms should

be 5 to 15 minutes long and can cove r anytopic. Films will be considered for prizesand may be accepted into the upcomingUlaanbaatar International Film Festival. Most importantly, all submitted lms willhelp grow Mongolian cinema and its future

    possibilities.The Underground Film Competition
