On March 15th and 16th at 7 pm, theArts Council of Mongolia is organizingthe Music and Dance College’s PercussionEnsemble Concert entitled ‘Compositions2013’, which will be performed at theState Philharmonic to promote world andnational classic music in the community.
The Music and Dance College’sPercussion Ensemble was rst started in1985 and named after S.Gonchigsumlaa.The Ensemble received the ‘Silver Tree’
For three years, the Arts Council of Mongolia has collaborated with ChoijinLama Temple Museum, the NaturalHistory Museum, and the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts on the ‘Museum ina Box’ educational project, which aimsto transmit cultural heritage to childrenand to enrich the museum’s educationaloutreach program for increased sustainabledevelopment of museum institutions. This project provides knowledge about t angibleand intangible cultural heritage for childrenand youth and gives them pride in their history and culture through participatoryexercises in traditional handicraft andne arts as well as an improved aestheticappreciation of art.
With funding from the PetrovisCompany in 2012, the ACM and Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts examined themuseum’s collections and made replicasof 12 representative pieces from about20 museum displays to be included in thetraveling museum box, targeted to appeal tochildren and their educational background.They also produced a museum guidebook for the children in collaboration withteachers and scholars.

The ‘Dreamer’s Day’ series is run by AltanKhalis (Golden Film) NGO andhosted by the Arts Council of Mongoliaat the Red Ger Art Gallery at CentralKhan Bank. The mission of AltanKhalisis to advocate and support classic and arthouse lmmakers. ‘Dreamer’s Day’ had itsrst showing on September 17, 2009 andsince then it has screened 123 lms freeof charge. Art house lms from around theworld are shown in their original languagewith Mongolian subtitles and there is adiscussion period after each showing.
The February 23rd screening was‘Paper Moon’, a 1973 American lmdirected by Peter Bogdanovich. Beforethe screening, an experimental short lm‘Nureev’ by Mongolian director Hos-Erdene was shown, and then the director answered questions. Set primarily in a basement where Hos-Erdene isolatedhimself for four months to reect, the piecewas an interesting (if jarring) visualizationof the artistic process. ‘Paper Moon’ is a
crime-drama lm centered around a conman and a young girl who may or may not be his orphaned daughter, set during theGreat Depression of the 1930s and starringreal-life father and daughter actors Ryanand Tatum O’Neal.
The next showing of ‘Dreamer’sDay’ will be on March 1st at 10 pm andwill show the ‘Dog Star Man’ series of 5short experimental pieces by Director StanBrakhage. The March 9th showing will be‘Farewell My Concubine’, a Chinese lmdirected by Chen Kaige.
Two big upcoming events on March16th are the ‘Future Shorts: Winter’collection of short lms from around theworld. ‘Future Shorts: Winter’ will alsotake place at the Red Ger Art Gallery andwill sell special event tickets for Tgs5,000.On March 25-28 the Francophone FilmFestival will take place in collaborationwith Alliance Francaise de Mongolia.

On March 1st, at 5 pm there will be a special contemporary music anddance performance entitled ‘CompletelyUngrounded’ at the student theater of theMongolian University of Culture and Artswith music by postgraduate teacher P.Munkhjin with choreography by culturalworker Professor B. Jargal and studentE. Erdenehuu. From the Folk Musicdepartment, the dulcimer quartet will perform under the direction of culturalworker Professor B. Badarch. Students whograduated from the Dance Arts departmentwill perform under the guidance of culturalworker Professor B. Jargal.

‘Completely Ungrounded’: Contemporary Music and Dance Perormance
award at the 2010 music festival and in2012 music teacher B. Zorig was awardedthe ‘Entrepreneur 2012’ Prize by theMongolian National Culture and ArtsDivision. In 2012, the Ensemble consistingof 18 talented young performers and their teacher participated in the 10th UNESCOChildren’s Performing Arts Festival of EastAsia in the ‘Silver Swallow’ pavilion.
The Percussion Ensemble has held‘Compositions’ concerts annually for thelast six years, beginning in 2007. The performance consists of 17 pieces of worldand national classical music, and duringthe rst act, pieces are performed fromworld-famous artists like D. Mancini, E.Morricone, Floyd Werle, and Eyles. Thesecond act includes pieces by Mongolianmusicians N. Jantsannorov, L. Murdorj, andB. Zorigt as well as new compositions.
‘Compositions 2013’ is supported byB. Bold, Ch. Sainzaya, Modern Nomadsrestaurant and Xanadu Wines, with mediasupport from NTN TV, Mongol HDTV, gogo.mn, and news.mn to presentenjoyable performances for the public.

by museum staff with assistance from anauthor of children’s books, the MuseumDevelopment Association, and theGegeerel Education Center.
On February 28, the rst ‘Museumin a Box’ class was held at the Zanabazar Museum of Fine Arts where museum staff
taught teach secondary school students.During the 2013-2014 school year, the‘Museum in a Box’ will travel to schools inremote cities and communities to providechildren with a museum experience toaccess their cultural heritage.
