■ Presentation(Have the empty jars set in a row, in this order, J, O, Y. Place the candy bar marked $1.50 and the toy marked $2.50 on the table so they can be seen.)

Kids, I have three jars on the table. This jar with the Y means YOU. This is where you can keep your personal treasure. The jar with the O stands for OTHERS. The J on this jar is for JESUS. If you want to have JOY in your life, you need to learn to give: to yourself, to others, and to Jesus. But you’ll only have real joy if you give in the right order.

(Have a volunteer come up to help you.) Let’s say you washed your mom’s car, and she paid you $3.00. (Give the volunteer two $1 bills and change that equals $1.00.) Now let’s see what you should do with the money.

Jesus should always come first. The Bible says we should give at least one-tenth of everything we earn to Jesus. What is one-tenth of $3.00? (Allow responses.) One-tenth of $3.00 is $.30. Let’s put $.30 in the J jar. (Put $.30 in the J jar.) The Bible says we should also give offerings over and above our tithes. This would be your BGMC offering. Let’s give 25¢ to BGMC.

You still have $2.45 left. You can give some to others and keep some for yourself. Let’s say your friend has a birthday coming up. You can buy your friend this candy bar for $1.50. And there’s this toy you want to buy for yourself that costs $2.50. Right now, you don’t have enough for both. What would you like to do? (Allow the volunteer to determine how much to put in the O and Y jars.)

Now let’s say your grandmother gives you $5.00 for your birthday. (Give the volunteer the money in the envelope.) What’s one-tenth of $5.00? (Allow responses.) Let’s put one-tenth in the J jar. That should always come first. Next should come your offering to BGMC. Let’s give another 25¢ to BGMC.

You have $4.25 left. How much would you like to save for yourself, and how much would you like to save for a birthday gift for your friend? (Allow the volunteer to determine how much to put in the O and Y jars.)

It looks like you now have enough to buy both items. (Have the volunteer “buy” the candy bar and give it to a friend. The friend should eat it right away. Have the volunteer “buy” the toy. Make sure it breaks when you hand it over.)

Wow, that toy didn’t last long, did it? How much joy did it give you? (Allow responses.) What about your friend? I think the candy bar gave your friend some joy, but how long did that last? (Allow responses.)

The kind of joy you get from gifts, toys, or candy is nice, but it doesn’t last long. Your own personal treasure doesn’t bring lasting joy.

Out of all three of these jars, which do you think will bring lasting joy? (Allow responses.) The only true joy comes in giving to eternal things. (Count the money in the J jar.) What you gave to Jesus is something that will last. The money you give helps to win souls all over the world. That’s for eternity!
