YOUR JOB MATTERS Would you believe that what you do Monday through Friday is

more important to God than what you do on Sunday morning? It

is! Singing, prayer, teaching, and fellowship with other Christians is

vitally important. But, if it doesn’t help you to become a better

teacher, engineer, waiter, principal, lawyer, mechanic—you get the

picture—then somewhere we have missed the point. Paul said that “whatever you do, work at it with all your

heart, as working for the Lord” Col 3:23. We have a tendency to view our job as what we do to pay the bills, our

hobbies are what we do for fun, and our ministry is what we do for—or at—church; we live fractured lives! We

come to church and (sometimes) experience the presence of God. We leave church on an emotional high and then

grudgingly go to work Monday. We are often exhausted, frustrated, and used up by payday. We take that check,

tithe, pay some bills, and try to enjoy what is left. We call that life?

I sat in a conference Friday listening to business leaders discuss ways to lead in “the world” as a Christian. I left

excited and convicted. I am excited that there are many successful Fortune 500 companies led by Christians following Biblical principles. I am excited that there are people willing to stand up in “the world” and proudly

proclaim Jesus as Lord over their lives and Lord over their work. I am convicted that the Church is not more

relevant in the daily lives of many Christians. Leadership development at church shouldn’t just help you lead a small

group. It should equip you to lead that class of 6th grade students Monday through Friday. That class on prayer

should prepare you to pray for your coworkers and employees. That spiritual gift of discernment should help you

see through the mask your best friend is wearing to hide the pain of his addiction. That stewardship class should

prepare you to live within your means and operate your business for profit.

Heritage is a very good church and I very proudly introduce myself as her Director of Ministries. Friends from high

school and college often respond in laughter or shock but that is a story for another day. Your Pastor and staff love

the Lord and we love this congregation. Our desire is that this community would be transformed—7 days a week—

by the love of Jesus through the ministry of Heritage. Will you help? If you have not yet taken the Church

Relationship Assessment, please do it as soon as possible. Simply go to http://liferelationships.com/cra-heritage on

your computer, tablet, or smartphone. We would also like to know how we can better equip you for your M-F

ministry; please drop me a note at [email protected] and tell me ideas you have that would help

you better take meaning TO your job. Jim Collins said that the enemy of great is good. Join me in

praying that it should never be applicable to Heritage. I am excited for our future; I pray you are too!

Roger Goins, Director of Ministries

“We don’t GET meaning FROM our work…

We BRING meaning TO our work.”

Dr. Frank Harrington
