PAGE 2 REFLECTION OF THE WEEK January 6, 2019

Epiphany of the LordGospel SummaryThe Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, asking the whereabouts of the newborn king of the Jews. Herod was troubled by this news of the birth, as was all of Jerusalem. He sent the Magi to Bethlehem to search for the child, asking that they bring the child to him so that he could do the child homage. The Magi set out and followed the star to the place where the child was. They did the child homage and offered him their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to return to Herod, and they left for their country by a different route.Refl ection for ParentsThis Gospel narrative is full of adventure, danger, mystery, and yes—gifts! During this Christmas season, enjoy dramatizing this Gospel as a family. Then think about how far you would travel, how far you would go to pay homage to Jesus. Would you go as far as your parish to receive the Sacraments or to spend some time in quiet prayer? Would you go as far as the soup kitchen to serve a meal to the hungry? Would you go as far as to tell someone to stop bullying a classmate or a coworker? Would you go as far as to give up a morning cup of coffee or a favorite treat in order to give to someone in need the gift of food or clothing or the necessities of life? How far would you go? What would you give as your gifts to the King?Questions for the weekAdults: When have you been jealous or fearful of another person? When are such feelings harmful?Children: When have you been jealous because something good happened to another person instead of you? What is the problem with feeling that way?

Adultos: ¿Cuándo has estado celoso o temeroso de otra persona?

Old Mission School resumes classes on Monday, January

7, 2019. We begin each day, weather permitting, by gathering outside for a school-wide assembly. Students from grades three through eight take turns leading a lectionary-based prayer service which includes scripture readings and intercessions offered by individuals. Students and staff also share information regarding sports and service projects. On Friday, the students may donate tithing money to charities as we pass a basket and joyfully sing. We enjoy beginning the new year, as well as each school day, by centering our minds and hearts in the presence of Jesus.Old Mission Catholic School is currently accepting applications for preschool through eighth grade. Our entire school community is dedicated to the development of socially responsible citizens for the twenty-first century who are spiritually empowered, academically enriched, and morally accountable for their actions. For more information or to obtain an application, please visit our website at www.oldmissionschool.com or call 543-6019. Come see us. We have openings, and we have financial assistance. A Catholic education is an advantage for life.

A Pope, the Pill, and the Perils of Sexual ChaosEveryone of childbearing age grew up in a culture of “the pill”. Perhaps, we then just accepted contraception as normal, without questioning? Is it time to

question the widespread acceptance of contraception? A thought provoking new film---UNPROTECTED---does just that! UNPROTECTED has been premiering all over the country, and tickets are now available for the ONLY screening being offered here in the Monterey Diocese, featuring a meet and greet with Don Johnson, the Producer of the film, and Sheila St. John, Executive Director of CANFP.
