OCTOBER 23, 2016 - 3 - THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

My deepest thanks to all parishioners of St. Timothy parish for all you do to increase charity and to take on sacrifice.

Fr. Ed

Our families deserve a happy “us” and that means we have to train ourselves to leave a hard day behind us and allow ourselves to focus on our families when we get home. I recently heard a story called “The Trouble Tree” that shared a great example of how we can make that happen:

“THE TROUBLE TREE” The carpenter who was hired to help a man restore an old farmhouse had just finished his first day on the job and everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong. First of all, on his way to work he had a flat tire that cost him an hour’s worth of pay, then his electric saw broke, and after work his old pickup truck refused to start.

His new boss volunteered to give him a lift home and the whole way to his house the carpenter sat in stone silence as he stared out his window. Yet on arriving, he invited his boss in for a few minutes to meet his family. As they walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When he opened the door, he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was one big smile as he hugged his two small children and kissed his wife.

Afterwards, the man walked his boss to his car to say thank you. Now on their way out of the house, the boss’ curiosity got the best of him so he had to ask the man about the tree on the front porch. He said, I noticed when you came up on the porch before going into your house you stopped and touched the tree, why?

“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied. “I know I can’t stop from having troubles out on the job, but one thing’s for sure – my troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and children. So I just hang them up on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”

“Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick ‘em up, they aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

IN SUPPORT OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY The weekend of November 5/6, Mr. Dave Dykstra will be outside church with jewelry items to be purchased. Funds raised will go to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

SINCERE APOLOGIES

Sincere apologies are extended for an error in the October 2, 2016 bulletin cover story of the presentation given on the dedication of the statue of a Chaplain now standing in the prayer garden. The name of Father Charles Watters was misspelled. This was a clerical error for which apologies are offered .

If you have not already done so, take the time to visit the statue and surrounding garden area. It is a place of peace and tranquility, offering many who visit a place to

grow closer to God.

PRAY THE VOTE

ST. TIMOTHY ANNUAL LIFE CHAIN Next Sunday, October 30, from 2:00-3:00 PM, the Annual Life Chain will be held. Christians need to unite in prayer. In the midst of all the political turmoil, please take a breath and communicate through prayer with our Almighty Father. We will pray for

abortion to end in this country and to restore a respect for all Christians, so our freedom to practice our faith is not in jeopardy. Our prayers are the most powerful asset we have. Please plan to participate in this year's annual life chain.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP The bishops of the United States have issued a statement on the importance of bringing the values of our faith to the decisions made in our public life. In their statement, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the bishops call for "a different kind of

political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well-formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable" (no. 14). As you prepare for the upcoming election, please consider how the values of your faith can help you make your decisions. For information on Faithful Citizenship, visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org.

FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP PRAYER Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from

blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender. We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom.

We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

PILGRIMAGE TO PASS THROUGH THE HOLY DOOR OF MERCY On October 10, 2016 Allen Eskreis led a group of parishioners on a pilgrimage to Mary Queen of the Universe Basilica. The above photograph shows the group ready to “pass through the Holy Door of Mercy” as a partial requirement to obtain a Plenary Indulgence. The group shared a prayerful and spiritual experience and found visiting the Basilica to be a treasure in itself.

“Making pilgrimages to shrines is one of the most eloquent experssions of the faith of god’s people, and is a form of evangelization which needs to be increasingly promoted and valued.” - Pope Francis

THE SAMARITAN INN The Samaritan Inn is the Christian Care Center’s Housing Ministry for homeless children and their parents. It’s a temporary refuge to help families become self-sufficient in a safe environment while teaching them life

skills, helping them to set and reach their goals, and providing them with spiritual guidance and moral support during their residence. Formerly the Big Bass motel, the property was purchased in 2009 by First Baptist Church of Leesburg with the help of partners in faith and the support of others. Located on the southwest corner of the First Baptist Church campus, it’s a unique part of the Christian Care Center Ministry Village and is the only transitional housing ministry located in Lake County, Florida. The Inn first opened its doors – and its heart – to residents in 2010; today, each of its seventeen rooms is approximately 280 square feet and can accommodate a married couple with up to two children. But typically, single mothers with children are the most frequent applicants. Since the Inn began, it’s been home to sixty-one families. This is not a same-day emergency shelter. Samaritan Inn offers both Temporary and Transitional Housing and there is an application process that can take up to two weeks to complete and includes a Fingerprint and Background check. Our Temporary Housing program allows resident to remain at Samaritan Inn for up to 60 days. They are not required to create a Personal Case Plan or participate in counseling or faith based programs- but may do so if they wish to. Our Transitional Housing program requires all adult residents to create a Personal Case Plan outlining the goals they expect to accomplish within the year. Typically, goals include: finding or continuing employment, completing or advancing education, achieving financial stability, and furthering spiritual growth. In additional to their case plan, all adult residents are required to participate in counseling and other faith based programs. The Inn’s Family Services Case Manager provides assistance and direction to the residents as they continuously work on their Case Plan during their six to twelve month stay in the program. In addition to the Case Manager, the Director, Resident Manager/Cook, and many dedicated volunteers are on site. Every evening, meals are prepared and served in the Inn’s dining room; there’s a special room with crafts for children, two laundry rooms, and two computers are available for residents to apply for Medicaid and other programs. The First Baptist Church, on whose campus the Inn is located, provides a wide variety of Bible classes and studies, as well as three Sunday morning worship services. The Samaritan Inn also partners with other Christian Care ministries to provide additional free services on campus. Included are: Financial Counseling, Emotional Counseling, Christian Parenting classes, and others. Like all ministries, the Samaritan Inn thrives with the efforts of volunteers and always needs “good Samaritans” to join the team. For further information, please call 352-434-1832 or visit www.christiancarecenter.org. “…For in so much as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me.” Matthew 25:40
