This is a not so gentle reminder to sign up to have your picture taken for our Parish Family Album. We had a good response when the photographers were here in July, but I know there are many out there who have yet to sign up for the September visit. Remember there is no cost to you to have your picture taken…….and each parishioner/family who sign up will receive a free 8 x 10 and a copy of the album. Those parishioners who had the picture taken in July are delighted with the high quality of the photograph. Whenever a parish does an album such as this it’s important to have as many parishioners as possible included in the album. During an anniversary year such as our 125th….or as you all know by now……our quasquicen-tennial anniversary…..it is even more important, because this will be help create another major link in the his-tory of Holy Spirit parish. We all know the old saying….a picture is worth a thousand words…..and it is cer-tainly true. Looking back over the history of the parish, there are, obviously very few pictures from the early years. From the 1940’s onward there are more pictures available of parish activities. However there is no com-prehensive picture…..no pun intended…..of the members of the parish as a whole. The last real attempt at making an album was in 2006, and it provided….and still does…some insight into the parish family. However that was 12 years ago, and it is now time for us to update our pictorial history. No matter what part you play in the life of the parish….you belong in this book. There are some who are in-volved in many areas of parish life….there are some who can manage only to mass each Sunday. Everyone should be in the book. If you are an usher and have not signed up for a picture…… now is the time. How about lectors and Eucharistic ministers….make an appointment. Ministry of consolation? There are so many in this ministry….companion, booklet person, computer person, cake baker…..get your picture in this book. Hospitality….choir members….family mass leaders and members……Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, Holy Spirit Players, Boy Scouts…..get in the book. Then we have our Religious Education families. This is a great opportunity to get everyone together and have a beautiful family picture taken…..for free. Bring along the kids, grandkids, pets (within reason). Wear your favorite team jersey…..Fr. Grieco has given Yankee fans a dispensation to wear their jersey if they wish. If your kids play a sport….bring them along in their uniform. Perhaps you are a parishioner who is also a member of the Fire Department…..wear your uniform for the pic-ture…….maybe have your picture taken with other parishioners who are also firemen. This will be a real fam-ily album, and it will provide a pictorial record for our families, our parish, and indeed for the community of New Hyde Park and Garden City Park. All pictures will be taken in Martin Hall, which is handicapped accessible. The photographers will be here on Tuesday Sept 18, Wed Sept 19, Thu Sept 20, Fri Sept 21 and Saturday Sept. 22. There are afternoon and evening sessions available. Everyone will find a time that suits their schedule. How do I sign up for to have my picture taken? There are two ways. Follow the link below, for those who can use a computer. https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/yd2ephds/ If you are unable to use a computer or do not have access, please come to the rectory and the ladies in the office will get you signed up. It will only take two minutes.

May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen

PARISH FAMILY ALBUM Below is the link to sign up for pictures to be included in the Parish Family Album. This album will be part of our 125th anniversary celebration. There is no charge for the pic-ture, and each family that signs up will receive a free 8x10 plus a free copy of the album. This will be a hard cover book and something to be enjoyed for many years to come. Most of us are comfortable signing up on line. We all ….with a few exceptions….know our way around the basics of a computer. The sign up process is very, very, simple. The link below will take you straight to a dedicated Holy Spirit sign up page. It is that simple: https://booknow-lifetouch.appointment-plus.com/yd2ephds/

You can also sign up on the Holy Spirit Web page: holyspiritnhp.com

Once again…one click will bring you to the sign up page. For those who cannot sign up online we will have opportunities to do so in the rectory. There are some parishioners, who for one reason or another, cannot get online. But most of us can…so please sign up using the link. We will have sign up dates in September. We want as many parishioners as possible to be included in the album. Please join in making this another glorious chapter in the life of Holy Spirit Parish. Ad multos annos! (To many years!)

The 2018 Holy Spirit CYO Cross Country practice season started on Monday, July 13th and continue throughout the summer. The practices will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00pm to 8:00pm at the Garden City Middle School. For those of you unfamiliar with this season, it is where the children run different distances in the park, de-pending on their age group. If your child was not able to make any of the practices in July and Au-gust, that's okay. They can still come to the prac-tices when they get back. If you're not sure of whether or not your child will like it, come to the practice and try it out before you register. The fee is $30 and the cost for a new uniform is $20. If you have any questions, you can either Email Peter Williams at [email protected], or call (516) 741-4533.

The meeting of the Rosary Society will be on Mon-day, September 10th. We will meet as usual at 7PM in Church for recitation of the Rosary. Follow-ing this we will meet in Martin Hall for our Welcome Back Social where coffee and cake will be served. Dues for the year of $10 will be col-lected. Please also note that this meeting is one of two dates when we will collect donations ($20 sug-gested) for our Christmas Fair Raffle Prizes. As al-ways, all ladies of our parish are encouraged and welcome to attend.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO RENEW! You can still get your renewal or new subscription in and be entered in our September drawing. Just place $100 in the Sunday collection clearly marked for the 50-50 Club or drop at the rectory of-fice. You must be in to win!

September 9th, 2018 23RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “Jesus … went by way of Sidon … into the district of the Decapolis.” For most of Jesus’ ministry, he remains in Galilee and areas with a predominantly Jewish popula-tion. Today, however, we see Jesus traveling through a heavily pagan area. This makes the utterance of faith in today’s Gospel all the more astounding. “He has done all things well.” In this story, a deaf man is brought to Jesus. This man is not without community! Despite communication difficul-ties due to a speech impediment, his people bring him before Jesus. Jesus lays hands upon the man and com-mands his broken body to change. “‘Be opened!’ Imme-diately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impedi-ment was removed, and he spoke plainly.” The commu-nity is stunned. They can’t stop telling the story. The more Jesus asks them to settle down, the more they pro-claim! The Jewish people expected a Messiah but a Mes-siah with very particular qualifications. The Greeks and pagans anticipated no such savior. There were no expec-tations to meet. They had a special capacity to be com-pletely, utterly surprised. As Catholics, it can be easy to become accustomed to the songs and the prayers, to the routine of religious education drop-offs and Sunday Mass attendance. By now, we may have very particular expectations. When was the last time you allowed yourself to be surprised by God? Sometimes we are all like the deaf man in today’s Gospel. God wants to speak to us, but we can’t hear clearly. In your prayer this week, go before God hon-estly. Give yourself permission to drop your expectations and assumptions. Ask Him to renew your faith to show you how, in your life, “He has done all things well.”

Living Stewardship: We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who demonstrate by their generosity that they understand God is the Source of all they are and have.

Observances for the Week of September 9, 2018 Sunday: 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time; Grandparents Day Monday: Tuesday: Patriot Day Wednesday: The Most Holy Name of Mary Thursday: St. John Chrysostom Friday: The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Saturday: Our Lady of Sorrows Next Sunday: 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
