Dear Fellow Believers and Friends
Welcome to our Mission and Music Festival. Welcome to a day of inspiration and worship. Welcome to
a celebration of the wonderful acts of God in providing salvation for us through Jesus Christ.
Many of you have travelled hundreds of miles to be here today and others have travelled only a short
distance. Some have also come from outside the territory of the South England Conference. We extend
to you all a very warm and cordial welcome. We welcome in particular our guest speaker for the day,
Dr Dwight Nelson, who comes to us from Michigan, USA. A special welcome is also given to the
leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church from our national and European headquarters who are present. Lastly we welcome our
friends from the non-SDA community who have joined us in worship today
Many hours have been put into planning the programme for the day and ensuring that its quality honours the matchless name of the
One whom we have come to worship. Here I wish to pay tribute to Trevor Johnson, Paul Lee and Miroslav Pujic, who
have done much of the spadework in planning the day’s programme.
The day’s programme is a joint effort of the South England Conference and the SEC Chapter of the Adventist Music Association
(AMA). Its primary objective is to remind ourselves of the great task there is to reach the people of the United Kingdom with the
Gospel of Jesus Christ and to provide an avenue for all who are present to express their joy in the Lord through music. I trust that
the programme will be a blessing to all who are present.
Don W McFarlane, PRESIDENT
This year marks the hundredth anniversary of the South England
Conference. At a session of the British Union Conference of
Seventh-day Adventists in 1902 a decision was taken to divide
Britain into the North British and South England Conferences.
However, it was not until the following year that the voted
arrangements were implemented. E J Waggoner was appointed
the first president of the Conference. The Conference was
established at a time when the prospects for the growth of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church in Britain seemed promising.
The territory of the South England Conference was not the
same in 1903 as it is today and there have been several
changes during the interim. For example, in 1912 London,
Hertfordshire, Middlesex and Essex were constituted into what
was known as the Union District, and some areas of what is
now known as the South England Conference were part of the
East Central Conference at one stage. There were several other
mutations until 1928 when a decision was made to have two
conferences and three missions and the present boundaries of
the South England Conference was established.
The South England Conference is made up of the
following counties: Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire,
Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset Essex, Gloucester,
Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex, Norfolk, Oxford,
Somerset, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex, Wiltshire. Just under 15,000
members meet each Sabbath in 128 congregations across the
Conference for worship, study and fellowship.
In this centenary year of our Conference we celebrate God’s
leading in the witness and ministry of His people over ten
decades. We celebrate the influential lives of the many
thousands who have been members of churches in the
Conference since its inception. Many are now asleep in the
grave, awaiting the return of our Lord, when they will be given
immortal life. We celebrate the freedom afforded by the laws of
the land to worship in harmony with the dictates of
conscience. Lastly we celebrate God’s love in sending Jesus
Christ, His Son, to be the Saviour of the world.
The motto of the South England Conference is, “The Whole
Church, Taking the Whole Gospel, to the Whole Community.”
We believe that the only hope for our world is Jesus Christ and
as a Conference we are committed to sharing the good news
about Him to as many as possible.
~DW McFarlane
Welcome
One hundred years of the SEC The London Seventh-day Adventist Male Voice Choir was
established in the summer of 1978 and is celebrating its 25th
anniversary. The choir was originally formed from the
membership of the Holloway Male Voice Choir, itself
approaching it’s 50th Anniversary in 2005, the South London
Male Voice Praise and other singing men drawn from many
Seventh-day Adventist Churches in the London area.
The choir’s mission is to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ
and the Advent message through the medium of singing. To
achieve this it uses a repertoire of traditional gospel music,
Negro spirituals and anthems. These are presented in a four-
part close harmony persuasive and riveting style to a wide
range of audiences during the period of its existence.
The choir holds an annual festival praise that brings
inspiration and spiritual recommitment to audiences that
regularly would average over 500. It has consistently supported
major evangelistic campaigns throughout the British Union,
performed at camp meetings, Union and Conference sessions,
at area Days of fellowship and local church events. In
addition, the choir has had the opportunity to take a number
of Sunday evening worship services in many Christian
churches, including performances in the presence of the
Archbishop of Canterbury, the Leader of the GLC and many
other religious, civic and political leaders. The choir also
featured in the historical Windrush celebrations held in
London, June 1998. Another achievement of the choir to be
noted is its successful and inspiring tour of the Caribbean in
1999, involving the islands of Jamaica, Antigua, St Vincent,
Grenada and Barbados. The choir’s visit was reported on
a number of radio and television networks. It has also
produced audiotapes of its performances along with a CD
commemorating its 1999 Caribbean Tour.
Since its inception the choir has been led by Mr Lambert
John, who is also a notable music composer in his own right,
and who was responsible for writing a special piece of music for
the opening of The John Loughborough School in 1980. He has
also arranged the choir’s well-known finale item ‘Redemption
Draweth Nigh’, first performed in the 1978 Festival of Praise.
Mr John has also directed the Holloway Male Voice Choir for 37
years. In the early years of the choir Mr Osric DeCoteau, Mr
George Escoffery and Mr Keith Davidson supported Mr John.
The Choir wish to thank church members in the British
Union for the support they have given to the choir during the
25 years of its work of lifting up the name of Jesus. It is also
grateful to the Holloway Church for allowing the choir to use
its premises as the base for its rehearsals over these many
years. Finally, the choir gives ultimate gratitude and praise to
God for its accomplishments and reaffirms its commitment to
the spreading of the Good News of salvation.
~Dr. Keith Davidson (March 2003)

The London Adventist Chorale was formed by John Tolman in
1982 to present a diverse repertoire of quality music to a broad
audience. Following John Tolman, the Chorale continued to
develop and perform quality music under the leadership of
Derek Hoyte. Receiving the prestigious title Sainsbury’s’ Choir
of the Year 1994-1995 took their ministry to new heights
under the leadership of Ken Burton, principal conductor. Since
this accolade, Ken has worked with Music Director Tina
Brooks to take the Chorale with its repertoire of spirituals,
classical masterpieces, traditional hymn arrangements and
contemporary gospel music to wider audiences in many
famous auditoriums such as the Royal Albert Hall, Barbican,
Sorbonne (Paris) and Sydney Opera House.
The LAC frequently feature on national and international
radio and television broadcasts for channels including BBC,
ITV, Channel 4 and have also recorded with major labels such
as EMI Classics. LAC has performed the world over from
Australia to Holland and from America to Zimbabwe.
In 2001, a special invitation was extended to the Chorale to
perform at the Classical Concert ‘Prom at the Palace’ as part of
the celebrations of HM The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. The choir
was amongst performers such as The BBC Symphony
Chorus and Orchestra under the directorship of Conductor
Laureate Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Thomas Allen, Mstislav
Rostropovich, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. More recently, the
Chorale performed at Blenheim Place, for the annual Winston
Churchill Memorial Concert hosted by Lady Henrietta
Spencer-Churchill; the keynote speaker for the event was
President Bill Clinton.
Singers from the choir are drawn from several Seventh-Day
Adventist Churches in London and the counties. The singers
are all experienced, and typically perform on a regular basis in
their own churches. The core desire of the members is to
“spread the gospel to all the world.”

Adventist Symphony OrchestraThe International Adventist Symphony Orchestra (IASO) is
an answer to the prayers of many people. Formed under the
auspices of the Adventist Musicians’ Association—AMA
especially for this event. It is truly international, with
musicians from Switzerland, Serbia, Russia, Iceland,
Australia, & South Korea (amongst others), as well as British
musicians from a variety of cultural heritages. The players
have been brought together to praise God through music
from both the classical and gospel traditions.
Ken BurtonHost (AMA)
(Conductor, Composer, Arranger, Vocal Coach, Lecturer)
Ken Burton ‘s work spans conducting, composing, educating,
adjudicating directing and performing on a variety of
platforms, including television, radio, international concert
venues, churches, schools, restaurants, hospitals and prisons.
Most recent appearances and performances have been on a
wide range of television programmes including Songs Of
Praise, Golden Jubilee, Des O Connor Tonight and
Sainsbury’s’ Choir Of The Year. Ken’s third Faber Music
publication, Ready To Ride, was released in January 2003, and
another volume of Christmas spirituals is due out in the
autumn with Oxford University Press.
Ken is probably most widely known through his work with
choirs, currently directing three: the session choral group,
Adventist Vocal Ensemble (AVE), who have performed over
twenty songs on various television programmes in 2002
alone; the London Adventist Chorale, winners of the 1994
Sainsbury’s Choir Of The Year under Ken’s direction, and
Croydon SDA Gospel Choir, with whom he has been in the
capacity of musician and director for its entire twenty-four
years, and where his musical skills were developed.
Although the continual demand leaves little room in
his diary for other interests, when Ken is not doing
music he occasionally fulfils the odd lay-preaching
appointment—he is totally in love with the Word of God.

What an exciting time to be alive! What a time to share one’s faith!
What a time to work for God!Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations . . .” but the traditional
methods in this 21st century are not reaching all sectors of society. The church, in the
British Union, is therefore developing additional ways of sharing the good news of
Jesus with men and women everywhere. The apostle Paul wrote, “I have become all
things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some. I do this for the
sake of the gospel . . .”
LIFEdevelopment.info is a strategic vision adopted by the Seventh-day Adventist
Church in Britain and Ireland to involve every member in building authentic, lasting
friendships with unchurched people. The goal for each member is “Win Three Secular
Friends in 2003” and start leading them through the process of coming to know Jesus
Christ, the greatest Friend they can ever have.
How can the goal be achieved? Firstly, pray for the power of the Holy Spirit, through
whom all things are possible. Secondly, be yourself and focus on trying to be friendly
to those you rub shoulders with at work, in the supermarket, at the service station, in
the restaurant. Thirdly, use the resources the church is providing, the LIFE.info
magazine, the videotapes. Fourthly, invite your new friends for a meal to a
LIFEdevelopment friendship group in your home or LIFEdevelopment centre in the
church. Fifthly, aim to invite your three new friends to watch the media event, with
Pastor Dwight Nelson, in March 2004 and then to follow through the following five
levels of LIFEdevelopment.info.
Conference President, Pastor Don McFarlane states, “A new century, a new approach,
a new commitment! That’s what the LIFEdevelopment.info means for the church in the
British Isles and beyond. Its potential for effective communication of present truth to
unchurched and secular people is immense. Its success lies firstly in the leading and
anointing of the Holy Spirit and secondly in the involvement of every member in this
exciting evangelistic process.”
Experience the joy of sharing your love of God with thosesearching for genuine spiritual fulfilment.

The Adventist Musicians Association (AMA) was launched at Newbold
in January 2002 as a culmination of the vision born by Miroslav Pujic
one year before. The aim of AMA is to form a network of support
training and resources for musicians for the enhancement of worship
and general events within the Trans-European Division. Membership to
this association is free and a database holds information on musicians
and those services allied to music for access to all members. Training
has been conducted across the country by members of the
management team and future projects include music festivals within
Europe, training symposiums, masterclasses and an AMA Awards
ceremony to be held in London 2004.
We are continually seeking to recruit members so please visit our
