INTRODUCTION

The 2015 London Design Festival feels more ambitious than ever; there’s a new destination at Somerset House

and we’re delighted that Greenwich Peninsular and Brixton are participating for the first time. There are some

spectacular installations to view too. From Alex Chinnock’s inverted pylon, A Bullet from a Shooting Star, to

the V&A where mischer’traxler have installed 250 glass globes containing fluttering butterflies and insects, you

could not wish for more diverse or creative pieces.

As the debate about design weeks continues, with more taking place each year, there is no question that

The London Design Festival has successfully set the pace, raised the bar and can demonstrate not only how

to energize the city but also encourage those outside the design industry to get involved. We love the fact

that Lohnerwerke will present new two-wheeler e-bikes and an exceptionally powerful electric scooter, while

Deadgood is launching a totally new library in Shoreditch.

In our pack, you will see that we have made it easier to navigate the city with our neighbourhood guides and

maps. The top 50 highlights should fast track you to the best edit and in addition we have included details about

our clients who have created or are involved in standout installations across London. If you need to meet people

50 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL

A BULLET FROM A SHOOTING STARA Bullet from a Shooting Star by Alex Chinneck takes the form of a regular electricity pylon but given the structural feat it is performing, the design is far from conventional. Referencing the industrial history of the site which once included the largest oil and gas works in Europe and a steelworks, Chinneck will create a lattice of steel, that resembles an upside down pylon, leaning at a precarious angle as though shot into the earth.

VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUMA unique collaboration between the world’s leading museum of art and design and London’s foremost contemporary design festival. This year’s programme will once again fill the Museum with an extraordinary range of design installations large and small, intricate and majestic. SOMERSET HOUSEThe West Wing Galleries will host ten internationally renowned design names, who are creating innovative individual room installations within the rooms of the West Wing Galleries. Participants comprise Barber & Osgerby, Nendo, Faye Toogood, Arik Levy with Tabanliogu Architects, Jasper Morrison with Punkt., Alex Rasmussen with Neal Feay, PATTERNITY with Paperless Post, Tino Schaedler with Optimist Design & United Realities, Ross Lovegrove with KEF and Luca Nichetto with Hem.

DESIGN DESTINATION: 100% DESIGNThis year sees 100% Design, London’s biggest design show for industry professionals, in its new home, Olympia London. The show will take place across two levels and feature five distinct sections including Interiors, Design & Build, Kitchens & Bathrooms, Workplace and Emerging Brands. The talks programme, Talks with 100% Design, will also return.

DESIGN DESTINATION: DECOREX INTERNATIONALShowcasing leading design brands, Decorex International 2015 returns to Syon Park, West London, this September offering a mix of new talent and established companies. DESIGN DESTINATION: FOCUS/15Focus/15 is a leading event for designers, architects and style-seekers, with a diversity of international brands offering inspiring and creative ideas. DESIGN DESTINATION: TENT LONDON & SUPER BRANDS LONDONTent London & Super Brands London have established themselves as showcases for independent design talent and brands. This year they will also host fairs for national pavilions during the Festival, with 450 exhibitors from 29 countries while a new feature, Techable, provides a platform for tech-enabled design.

DESIGN DISTRICT: BANKSIDE DESIGN DISTRICTThis is a brand new Design District. Since Tate Modern and the Millennium Bridge launched in 2000, Bankside has become home to many galleries, design studios, architectural practices and creative agencies. The District will showcase its creative industry, from workshops to walks, exhibitions and outdoor installations.

DESIGN DISTRICT: BROMPTON DESIGN DISTRICTPart of the Graphics Weekend at the V&A. Free talk, drop in Alan Kitching is one of the world’s foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. Alan will show work from his 50-year career, including a detailed look at a recent collaboration with Monotype.

DESIGN DISTRICT: CHELSEA DESIGN QUARTERLondon’s centre for interior design has the largest and most diverse selection of established interiors specialists concentrated in one area. The Quarter will bring together the capital’s most vibrant showrooms and creative communities along the King’s Road, with an inspiring programme of design led activities.

DESIGN DISTRICT: CLERKENWELL DESIGN QUARTERThe message for this year’s Clerkenwell Design Quarter is all about Discovery. This year participants within Clerkenwell Design Quarter include several major furniture showrooms and retailers as well as a group exhibition of jewellery at Craft Central and a display of famous gig posters from the past and present.

ARTISA FOUNDATION: SOUNDS LIKE HOMEThe idea of home is changing. We are moving more frequently from house to house, country to country. This immersive event asks the audience to speculate on what home means to them. It translates everyday domestic interaction into a soundscape, creating a unique song of the places we live in.

BETTER BANKSIDE: COLOURFUL CROSSINGSBetter Bankside has commissioned three very different artists to bring colour and animation to Southwark Street, London SE1. BRIXTON DESIGN TRAIL:STREET GALLERY FEATURING ELEY KISHIMOTO BRIXTON PRINTArchitects Squire and Partners will create a Street Gallery at the former Bon Marche Dept Store, with ten canvases created for the Brixton community by local designers. London Underground (Tube)The Underground is a fast option of getting around the city as London traffic can be unpredictable.

Purchasing an Oyster card can be done at any Underground station at one of the cashiers, at the cost of £5.00 deposit and then you can add as little or as much pre-paid money on it as you like. Topping up can be done eas-ily at any of the Oyster card machines in each station. You can return your Oyster card to a cashier when leaving London and receive your £5.00 deposit back.

London based design store twentytwentone will be presenting a special collection of Barber & Osgerby designed lanterns made for the Japanese manufacturer Ozeki. The lanterns have been constructed with the traditional Japanese methods using bamboo ‘wire’ and handmade mulberry bark paper. The lanterns will be exclusive to the twentytwentyone store.

Arper will showcase four of its new Kinesit chairs at 100% Design as part of a unique installation designed by Kirsteen Martin from Studio Design. The installation will be located in the Interiors section of the show. In addition, over 20 pieces of furniture, including a range of Arper’s famous Catifa chairs, can be seen at the Press Office and VIP Lounge area for the duration of the show.

Barber & Osgerby will create ‘The Reading Room’, filled with Knoll furniture designed by the pair, alongside other collaborators, Glas Italia, as part of Ten Designers in the West Wing at Somerset House. BERNHARDT DESIGNBernhardt Design will showcase Colours, its latest collection from French designer Noé Duchafour-Lawrance, during the London Design Festival. The collection was inspired by Duchafour-Lawrance’s childhood memories of a stepping stone path while playing outdoors. Colours is comprised of twelve upholstered pieces that can either stand alone or be combined in different ways. The mixture of surfaces allows designers to assemble flexible groupings to support different ways of congregating. As with much of Duchaufour-Lawrance’s work, the organic shapes are balanced with crisp tailoring and details. Soft curves create visual interest while saddle stitch detailing inserts geometric structure to the natural shape.

CITIZENMcitizenM is collaborating with upcoming Danish stylist and Art Director Nathalie Schwer to create a magical garden inspired by the famous Alice in Wonderland quote, “Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality”. SWAROVSKISwarovski has collaborated with London-based Norwegian emerging designer Kim Thomé on Zotem, a landmark installation for the London Design Festival at the V&A. Zotem is to be an 18-meter-tall double-sided monolith embedded with more than 600 bespoke Swarovski crystals, featuring a colorful blend of light and movement. The imposing structure will occupy a central space in the museum, rising vertically from the Grand Entrance up to the Contemporary Ceramics gallery on the sixth floor - making use of the high atrium connecting the two spaces to create a visual link prompting visitors to explore the building’s interior architecture in a new way. Mast Brothers have also designed a special edition bar for LDF’s pop-up shop at the V&A to be sold during the festival. Founded by Rick and Michael in 2007, Mast Brothers has been dedicated to introducing chocolate to the world with an obsessive attention to detail, meticulous craftsmanship and an absolute passion for making the best chocolate possible that is both ethically and sustainably sourced.
