Jazz is an ever-evolving art form – throughout the world, artists find their own pathways, compose new music, form new bands and forge new partnerships. �e festival traverses the international scene to seek artists who are pushing the boundaries of jazz as we know it.

�e result is a sequence of major projects being performed in the UK for the first time. �e ECM Records class of 2015 embraces David Virelles’ intensely personal response to the sounds of his native Cuba, Marcin Wasilewski’s collaboration with Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder, Elina Duni’s riveting interpretations of the folk songs of her Albanian heritage, and German pianist Julia Hülsmann’s wholly original

readings of the music of Kurt Weill, complemented by the extraordinary vocal range of �eo Bleckmann.

Echoing this global spread, Ibrahim Maalouf, Daniel Herskedal, Christian Scott and Cassandra Wilson all bring new projects to the UK, as does the remarkable Swiss composer and producer Nik Bärtsch in his Kings Place residency.

Looking outwards to where jazz collides with other genres, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn present their free-wheeling take on American roots, and a ground-breaking collaboration sees the music of producer/bassist Shri (of Badmarsh and Shri fame) transformed into repertoire for brass band by the arrangements of Ben Castle, playing London for the first time.

Finding fresh ways to reflect the sheer vitality of jazz and its rich traditions is part of the festival’s vision – hence our continuing commitment to devise concerts that both look into the future as well as illuminate the music’s history.

Our annual roof-raiser Jazz Voice (with musical director Guy Barker) reflects the ways in which jazz influences and reacts to a huge variety of other genres, from soul to blues and rock through songs and singers. �e following night, we gaze into a crystal ball with Gilles Peterson, seeking the artists who are on course to change the journey of jazz in years to come. �is year, we feature Kamasi Washington, already touted for his work with Kendrick Lamar and Flying Lotus, and Mercury-nominated GoGo Penguin, working with acclaimed

choreographer Lynne Page. It’s just as crucial to give fresh

insight into jazz history. �e music of the much–missed Kenny Wheeler is revisited by a stellar line-up of his fellow UK and US musicians

including Dave Holland, Norma Winstone, Stan

Sulzmann and Evan Parker. Alex Webb pays a¡ectionate

tribute to the centenary of the extraordinarily gifted composer and Ellington’s alter ego Billy Strayhorn, featuring guest vocalists David McAlmont and Allan Harris. And one of today’s signature vocalists Cassandra Wilson celebrates the centenary of the timeless Billie Holiday’s birth, while Richard Pite rekindles the spirit of the 1920s, revisiting the orchestral jazz of Paul Whiteman.

Jazz talksWHETHER YOU’RE AN AFICIONADO OR AN AMATEUR, OUR STIMULATING TALKS SHED LIGHT ON THE INIMITABLE WORLD OF JAZZ

Compiled in association with our Professor in Residence, Tony Whyton, our talks programme is designed to set the scene for the festival programme – to engage existing enthusiasts and to give a way in to jazz for new audiences.

Expect a series of panel sessions that reflect themes running through the festival, from the links between the disciplines of sport and improvisation, and the impact of the human voice in jazz to crucial issues around the civil rights movement that influenced the course of jazz in the 1960s,

and which continue to be reflected in the concerns of creative artists as they react to the world around them. Club Inégales’ provocative evening of Jazz Rants, and the latest edition of Way in to the Way Out, where two of today’s emerging talents discuss, dissect and debate their personal voyage of discovery into the evolution of jazz provide two more dimensions, as the festival brings together artists, writers and academics to illuminate the role of jazz in a broad cultural context.

Jazz is nothing without new blood. It’s been a fascinating process over the years to see how exciting young artists work their way through the jazz ecosystem – from tiny spaces or free stages to major club shows and concert halls.

�e festival’s commitment to a free events programme allows audiences to sample the music of emerging artists for the first time, as well as providing the artists the chance to play in front of hundreds of people.

�is year, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of our talent development programmes, Seriously Talented, designed to help artists from the UK and Europe achieve their creative aspirations. With more than 40 Seriously Talented artists performing across the festival, including five new commissions, supported by Cockayne — Grants for the Arts and

London Community Foundation, see a showcase of their work on Sunday 15 November at Southbank Centre.

Presenting new music has been a priority for the festival throughout its history and the legacy of the 21 commissions created for the festival’s 21st birthday, in 2013, is to make this an annual feature of our programme.

Refl ecting the festival’s breadth, this year’s commissions cover the full spectrum of jazz, with new works from saxophonist Melissa Aldana, via a new song from Kurt Elling as part of his jazz opera-to-be, to a new piece for students as part of Chris Montague’s story of the guitar – A Brief History of the Coolest Instrument in the World.

With a continuing international dialogue around race relations, the African–American origins of jazz become ever more pertinent. Terence Blanchard’s E-Collective performs music from his powerful new record Breathless (a reference to the last words of Eric Garner, who died in NYPD custody in 2014 ) and a major new black American voice, Kamasi Washington, plays live in the UK for the fi rst time following his powerful extended recording � e Epic.

However, it’s also important to probe deeper into history. In the 1920s, the music of Duke Ellington and his contemporaries provided the soundtrack to the extraordinary fl owering of Black culture in the Harlem Renaissance, alongside the words of Langston Hughes. Hughes’ masterpiece, Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz, is rooted in the spirit of the civil rights movement of its time and receives its fi rst performance outside the US, with the words spoken by a major fi gure in today’s Black culture: rapper and actor Ice-T.

Another landmark is the remarkable 50-year story of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Devoted to “nurturing, performing and recording serious original music”, the hothouse that continues to give creative space to a series of seminal African–American artists has had a massive impact over its fi ve decades. Orphy Robinson leads a specially created London celebration of a contemporary music phenomenon featuring an all-star line-up, including Cleveland Watkiss, HKB FiNN, Nikki Yeoh and Louis Moholo-Moholo, among others.

Jazz on 3 (Sunday 15 November, 2-6pm, The Cockpit) Adventures in Sound at The Cockpit. An extended afternoon of improvisation, featuring short sets from established acts as well as one-off collaborations between improvisers from diverse musical backgrounds.

�e art of jazz photography is celebrated at the Royal Albert Hall with an exhibition of the work of David Sinclair, whose dedicated coverage of the London scene over the years has produced a series of classic images that bring the art of jazz to visual life.

25 Years of Jazz Photography will showcase 100 of the best-known pictures from the man who has spent more than a quarter of a century in every jazz venue in the capital. Known by musicians across the world, David’s mainly black and white archive provides a unique record of the recent history of jazz.
