A questionnaire was distributed to grade

9 students (14-15 years old) in turkey.

A questionnaire was constructedcomprising seven open-ended questions

design to test students conceptionabout important areas of plant biology.

    Photosynthesis: process that coverts light

energy into chemical energy of sugars

    and oth

    er organic compound in greenplant.

Nutrition: process by which an organism

obtains food which is used to provideenergy and materials for its life sustaining

    activities.

    Question Misconception Concept

    What is thesource ofweight

    increase in

    plants during

    their growth?

    Most ofstudentanswer water

    and soil, 7

    student

    mentionedcarbon

    dioxide.

    The weightincrease inplants comes

    from organic

    substances,

    manufactured by the

    plantsthemselves.

    Question Misconception Concept

    why are

    plantscalledproducers?

    Plants are called

producers becausethey produceoxygen. On the otherhand, about half of

students claimed thatmost plants producefruit or vegetables, socan be called

    producers.

    Question Result

    Is it possible for animals

    to survive with

    out plantsin an ecosystem?

    Most students believed

    th

at animals need plantto survive but only 22students (25%) relate thiswith the process of

    photosynthesis.

What is the reason forkeeping carbon dioxide

at an optimum level inthe atmosphere, eventhough living organismbreath it continuously?

    Approximately 52students understand the

role of carbon dioxide inphotosynthesis, butremaining 36 students dinnot give accurate

    answer for this question.

Many students do not understand that plants absorbcarbon dioxide and water to produce organicmaterials.

Most of students have misconception that livingorganisms obtain energy by means other than byphotosynthesis or food intake.

Students understand the need for water, air andsunlight by plants. But they fail to understand why

these materials are important and how they are partof the production of food.
