Fall is always an exciting time in the church as new opportunities come to connect to the people of God in this place and renew our relationship with the Lord and His love for us. It is a time to consider how we will grow in our faith and love for God through the various worship experi-ences, Bible studies and other programs the church offers. And of course, at King of Glory it is always a time for us to live out our faith through service and sharing. Whether it be through feeding the hungry, filling a shoebox, or inviting someone to church.

King of Glory is filled with countless opportunities for you move forward in your faith journey. To be equipped, strengthened, empowered, renewed, and changed through the power and love of Jesus. There are countless opportunities for you to make an impact on your own life, the lives of those who gather as community in this place, the lives of those in the community around us, and even the lives of generations to come.

My prayer is that you will take hold of these opportunities and leave your footprint. Make a mark on your faith journey, the journey of others, and that of those still to come. Through it all, may the Lord be praised!

About the Guide:

The ministries and programs of the congregation work with one mission in mind: Connect, Grow and Live. Those same ministries and programs follow a flow. As we connect we move toward growth. As we grow we move toward living. As we live through service and sharing we seek new connections and the cycle continues.

Each ministry and program in the guide is therefore labeled to share with you how it fits into our mission and flow as a congregation.

WORSHIP

Each day we are given the privilege of living a life of worship. Our words, our actions, the decisions we make all are a reflection of God working in us and our lives responding to His love. To support you in your daily Christian walk, we gather each Sunday to worship together, be built up in faith and offer praise and adoration to our Savior and King.

We rejoice that we are a congregation which strives to have multiple points of entry. From the first day that the charter members met to this very day we have been a people who want to expand our reach through worship. Over the last 20 years we have challenged ourselves to constantly be reviewing the style, language, and approach of all of our ministries including worship so that the most people are enriched in their faith and hear the love of Jesus.

We are honored to offer you these opportunities to gather and connect to our Savior Jesus Christ. Each service, regardless of style, is grounded in the truth of God’s Word revealed in Holy Scripture (the Bible). Each service we take time to celebrate the sacramental gifts that God has given us. That is we rejoice in the power of Baptism and partake in the Holy Meal of Communion. Worship is a time to receive the gifts of God and at the same time offer our hearts and prayers to Him.

WORSHIPEach of our services, regardless of style, celebrates the foundations of our church, our worship tradition and a flow that distinguishes who we are as the people of God. Each services contains: a time of confession and absolution, reading from the Word of God, messages and sermons based on the Word, prayers, the Lord’s prayers, and the sacraments including Holy Communion. NEW SERVICE BEGINNING OCTOBER 7, 2012

In an effort to offer a service that is: experiential, has a mix of contemporary music, is more conversa-

tional, and involves families teaching and learning with their children, we will add a service on Sunday.

This service is not limited to but ideal for families who want to be a part of the worship experience with

children and teach children about worship, in worship.

One of our goals as a congregation is to partner with families in raising their children in the faith rather

than replacing them as the primary influence on their children’s faith development. This service will be

added to the many other ways we strive to achieve this goal.

The service will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 10:45 AM and will include all the fundamentals of

Lutheran worship (Invocation, Confession, Absolution, Bible reading, Sermon, Prayers, Lord’s Supper,

etc). We will launch this service Sunday, October 7.

COMMUNION ASSISTANTS Mason McLean: [email protected] Communion Assistants help to serve the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) during worship services. Participation is scheduled in advance. To serve please contact Mason.

ALTAR GUILD Marie Argus: 220-8155 Volunteer service on a scheduled basis to maintain and prepare the altar paraments, and prepare for the Lord’s Sup-per. Clean up following the service and secure storage of the elements and altar cloths are required parts of this important service.

ACOLYTES & CRUCIFERS Tara Wolf: [email protected] All youth in grades 4 and higher are eligible to serve as Acolytes (light candles) and Crucifers (carry the cross) for worship. Training is available in the spring, summer and fall. A parent is required to attend the training.

USHERS Mason McLean: [email protected] The Ushers are volunteers who serve to enhance our worship gatherings by providing direction and help to people. Participation is scheduled in advance.

LAY READERS Ruth Hughes: [email protected] Volunteer laypersons assist in the worship services on a scheduled basis by preparing for and reading appointed Scriptures.

Music Ministries - Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord!There are many opportunities to serve in Music Ministry at King of Glory! Being part of one of our music ensembles

is a dynamic way to live out our mission to CONNECT – GROW – and LIVE! Participation in our ensembles is a

wonderful way to CONNECT with others to lift up the Lord Jesus in song and make new friends…to GROW in faith

through God’s Word…and LIVE out our lives using the gifts He has given to us! No experience necessary…just a

desire to sing, make music…and make a joyful noise to the Lord!

The Cherub Choir Children of preschool and kindergarten ageThis is a wonderful opportunity for young children to sing songs of praise to the Lord in worship. The Cherubs rehearse on Thursdays at 4:00 PM from September through May in the Music Room beginning September 13th. They sing several times throughout the year at the 10:45 AM and 11:00 AM Worship. NewSong High school age through adultRehearsals for NewSong are held from September through June on Tuesdays at 7:30 PM in the Church sanctuary beginning September 9th. Instrumentalists as well as singers are needed to help lead song in a contemporary style! NewSong sings at least twice monthly at either the 9:30 AM or 11:00 AM Worship. King of Glory Chorale High school and adult singers This ensemble, comprised of 10-12 singers, presents a variety a cappella and accompanied choral repertoire ranging from Early to Modern musical styles. The Chorale sings monthly during Worship Services throughout the church year.Contact: Miriam Hettler, Director

The King’s Kids Children in 1st through 5th gradesRehearsals of The King’s Kids are held from September through June on Wednesdays at 4:30 PM in the Music Room begin-ning September 12th. The King’s Kids sing at worship at least once each month at the 10:45 AM or 11:00 AM Worship as well as special festival services. The King’s Kids also learn to ring handbells AND sing! The Praise Band Youth through adultThis music ministry team leads our 5:00 PM Contemporary Worship gathering each Sunday. The Band is always looking for those who would like to serve by singing or playing instruments. Rehearsals are held throughout the year on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. Contact: Christy King, Director

Youth Handbell Ensemble Youth in 6th grade and up

Rehearsals for the Youth Ensemble are held on Wednes-

day during the school year at 5:00 PM in the Church

sanctuary beginning October 3rd. The Youth Ensemble

rings (and sometimes sings) …and sometimes even does

both! Lots of fun!

The King of Glory Choir (for high school age through adult)

The KOG Choir enjoys singing a wide variety of choral

music during Sunday morning Worship Services through-

out the church year -- presenting Choral Concerts, and

singing during Festival Services and special events.

During the summer months the Choir enjoys singing a

repertoire of familiar music designed to include additional

singers from the congregation. The Choir Program also

includes Men’s and Women’s Ensembles who sing at Wor-

ship Services during the year. Choir rehearsals are held

at 7:30 PM on Wednesdays from September to June; at

8:00 PM during Advent and Lent; and before Services

during the summer. New members are always welcome.

Come and enjoy this inspirational opportunity to “break

forth into singing – making melody in your heart to the

Lord.” (Isa. 44; Eph.5.)

King of Glory Handbell Choir (for all who are interested!)

Rehearsals of the King of Glory Handbell Choir are held

from September through June on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM

in the Church sanctuary beginning September 4th. The

Handbell Choir is open to everyone regardless of musi-

cal knowledge and experience. The Handbell Choir

rings at worship on Sundays about once per month as

well as on special festival services.

We also have informal music ensemble opportunities

throughout the year including an Instrumental Ensemble

formed for the Christmas and Easter Festivals. Instrumen-

There are many opportunities for Bible Study at King of Glory. We have Sunday morning education time, where we dive into God’s word and go through it together. We will be studying Repentance, End Times, and the Advent season in the coming months. Not only do we have Sunday School, but we also have many other Bible Studies throughout the course of the week. Starting on September 5 we will be studying the book of Acts at 10 AM every Wednesday. On October 3 we will start Growing Points again, where we will be studying such topics as, “Who is God?, Sin, Who is Jesus?, and an overview of the scriptures.” This will take place every Wednesday evening starting at 6:30. A Note from Pastor Hengst


EDUCATION

At King of Glory our desire is that we connect, grow, and live together as a body of believers as we walk through life together. One of the ways that we can connect, grow, and live together is through the study of God’s Word.

This past week I had the privilege of meeting with our Adult Education Team, which consists of Rev. Dr. Phil Kuehnert, Dr. Jacob Goodson, Dr. Claire Partlow, and myself. As we discussed our goals for the remainder of the year for adult education, we found ourselves asking the question, “How can our Adult Education program help us connect to God and his people, grow in faith and love, and live through service and sharing?”

As we discussed this question it became apparent to me that studying God’s word together as the people of God is vital to us being able to connect, grow, and live. Through the time we study God’s word together we are spending time with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ we are connecting; we are connecting to God through the study of his word, but we are also connect to his people. When we open scripture and study God’s word together we are connecting to each other.

Through the study of God’s word, we grow in faith and love, because scripture does change our hearts. God’s word does work in us, and through the study of his word we do grow in faith and love. And when we grow in faith and love, we can live through service and sharing, as God shapes our lives. The study of God’s word is so important to the life of the church, and it is so important to the life of each one of us as we live out our daily walk.

Our desire as a church and as an Adult Education Team is for every person who is a part of KoG to become involved in studying God’s word, whether it be on Sundays, Wednesdays, or any other day of the week. With that in mind, we will be holding an Adult Educational Cluster, led by Pastor Kuehnert, Dr. Goodson, and myself on September 9th at 9:30 AM in the Sanctuary. This will be a time for you to make your voice heard on where you would like to see the Adult Education program go, on Sundays, Wednesdays, and everything in between. Any comments or suggestions are invited. Our goal is to see what we can do as a church to grow our Adult Education program.

Following this Adult Educational Cluster we will be having an Adult Education Luncheon at 12:15. Lunch will be provided, and everyone is invited. During this time we will be recapping what took place at the cluster for those who were not able to attend the cluster. Also each member of the Adult Education Team will give a small presentation on Adult Education, and we will conclude with a short Q & A. This is a time to communicate with each other, but also to fellowship with each other. Once again this will be a discussion for the entire scope of Adult Education.

We look forward to seeing you all there, as we connect, grow, and live together, through the study of God’s word.

Parents have the most influence on their children’s lives, and we are here to partner with you to bring your child up in the Christian faith. It’s our goal to partner with you, not replace you as the primary faith influence in your child’s life. Enter the “C.L.I.P. Parent Ministry”. We want you to know that you are Cared for by God, Loved by God, Intentionally chosen by God and Partners with the church.

At the end of a series, parents and children will take part in a special blessing in worship where you will bless your child and give them the blessing object for that age.

Discipleship topics are discussed at the appropriate age-levels: how to have meaningful family devotions, how to teach your child to serve, how to instill values for money management and giving, how to discuss issues of sexuality, purity, and more. This year we are focusing on 3 areas:

This year we are embarking on a new ministry opportunity, the Faith Legacy Series that aims to equip parents at different stages of the faith journey with your kids. It’s a family-centered and church-supported DVD based curriculum that helps parents be effective spiritual nurturers in the home from birth through high school. Sessions include teachings on DVD and small group discussions led by a facilitator.

We have a great KidsZone youth group here at King of Glory! We have restructured the grades, adopted a new name and are looking forward to a fun year Connecting & Growing with others and in our faith! Friends are always welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Events vary from month to month and are organized by leaders that serve 2x per year. When you bring your child to a youth group event, look for the RED SHIRTS. They are the Youth Group Leaders for the night and are coordinating the event. The BLUE SHIRTS are the Support Staff for the event.

When you register online for Youth & Children’s Ministries, we’ll put your child into their youth group. When you come to an event at King of Glory, check them in on the computer stations. Every event at King of Glory includes dinner, an activity and a Biblical devotion.

Come on out for an old-fashioned Variety Show! The participants of the National Youth Gathering need our help to raise some additional funds to help get the group to San Antonio. We will be taking free-will donations if you are able to give to the dinner.

Sign-ups for the Variety Show will begin in early October. Do you have a talent? A skill? Play the spoons? A joke library at home you’re just chomping at the bit to try out on a group of people that will be obliged to laugh? Well this is your time to shine! We’ll have a full line up of talent in all varieties for your enjoyment.

Since the National Youth Gathering is being held in San Antonio, TX, we will be serving a form of Tex-Mex, their special cuisine!

Christian Discipleship Training is the process by which we confirm youth at King of Glory. Any youth that is in grade 7 and higher is welcome to join the ministry. We offer a 2-year course that teaches the basics of the Christian faith through our Lutheran lens while offering practical ways to live out one’s faith. The youth involved in this ministry are offered opportunities to connect with one another and God, grow in their knowledge and relationships with others and Jesus and live out their faith through serving. We intentionally involve parents in the process of CDT, as well as caring adult leaders who serve as Small Group Leaders for the youth.

We have a growing and vibrant High School Ministry! Throughout the year we meet for Bible Study, connecting time with other youth and service activities. We have a wonderful High School Student Leadership Board that works with the equally wonderful High School Adult Leaders to plan and staff the events while reaching out to the youth of KoG and their friends.

Friends are always welcomed and encouraged to attend.

This year we’ll learn about King David, the apostle Paul, spiritual gifts and more. September-October we will meet at KoG. In November, we’ll meet there and the girls will leave to go to Mrs. Eva’s house for our “girls/guys” separate studies. Stay tuned for our winter meeting place.

Since 2000, Andrew Peterson and his friends have performed Behold the Lamb around the country, telling again and again this true myth, as C.S. Lewis called it, this tale that’s bigger than life, but is-astonishingly-true. The tour has become a yearly tradition not just for Andrew and the other artists on the tour, but for families and churches who attend the concert each season.

This is a show for all ages, although due to its length (about 2 hours), we leave the time for young children up to your discretion. Tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis and can be bought through Tara Wolf and we will carpool if needed.

What is the National LCMS Youth Gathering?

The National Youth Gathering (NYG, or Gathering) is an event held every 3 years for youth of The Lutheran Church—Mis-souri Synod (LCMS) to spend time together in worship, God’s Word, prayer, song and service. The Gathering provides young people an opportunity to learn more about Jesus Christ, the Christian faith and their Lutheran identity. This event, which is the single largest LCMS event, is organized by LCMS Youth Ministry in St. Louis, Missouri.

Why do we go to the National Youth Gathering?

The NYG provides a remarkable experience for youth in our Synod to Connect to God and His people, Grow in faith and love, and Live through service and sharing. The experience is there and we encourage our youth to grab hold of all that the Gath-ering has to offer. Youth are able to connect through God’s Word, song, skits, fun time, small groups, hands on experiences; grow through Bible studies, speakers, worship; and live through service opportunities throughout the Gathering time.

When and where is the next National LCMS Youth Gathering?

The next National LCMS Youth Gathering will be July 1-5, 2013, in San Antonio, Texas. We will depart on June 30 and return on July 6, 2013.

What is the theme for the NYG 2013?

The theme for the 2013 National LCMS Youth Gathering is “Live Love(d),” based on I John 4:9. “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.” (NIV)

Who Can Attend? NYG Requirements for Youth

The Gathering is intended for high school youth ages 14-19. Please read through the King of Glory policies carefully to deter-mine if your child is ready and able to attend this trip. Policies can be found online at www.kogvayouth.com

Enriching MinistriesCoffee Fellowship (C) Fellowship is simply defined as a friendly group joined by a common interest. A we gather between services in the Fellowship Hall we are sharing how the Lord has blessed us during times of joy, how He has been our comfort during some difficult days and praising Him for miracles in our lives. The fourth Friday of each month the H&H team serves approximately 100 dinners to the homeless at the Family Inn and Motel 6. Every Christmas season, KOG adults, youth and children portray Mary, Joseph, angels, kings, shepherds and sheep in a series of outdoor scenes dramatizing the story of the birth of Jesus. Help is always needed to assist with costumes, scenery/props, and snacks for the actors. This is a very easy and fun ministry for connecting with the local community. The Living Nativity will be presented this year on December 15th and 16th (Sat/Sun).

Prison Ministry: “Storybook Connection” A rotating team of faithful and dedicated men & women vol-unteers from KOG who visit prisoners at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail each Saturday. The volunteers bring children’s storybooks and recording tapes for the prisoners to tape record their reading of books to their children. Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Quilting and other projects: Volunteers work on constructing 60” X 80” quilts and/or school bags for LWR. Alternative LWR projects include assembling health and/or sewing kits and making pillowcase dresses. No special skills needed. All equipment and supplies are provided. Group tasks for quilting include cutting fabric for quilt blocks, sewing straight lines, tying knots through quilt layers. School Kit assembly will include sewing drawstring backpacks as well as packing supplies in them. Work days will be scheduled quarterly, as announced in the bulletin. LWML “Serve the Lord with Gladness” (Psalms 100:2) is the essence of the LWML society. All King of Glory Lutheran Church women are members of the “Women in Missions” LWML group. The LWML objective is to develop and maintain a greater mission consciousness through service, education, and inspiration, in concert with the King of Glory mission statement: “CONNECT – GROW - LIVE”. Note: The LWML group has changed the meeting time to a morning meeting, the 2nd Monday at 10:00 AM, and will meet from September through May in the Life Enrichment Rooms 3 & 4.

Program theme for the 2012-2013 year is “Quenched by the Water . . . “. The LWML 2012-2013 program booklet, available at the 1st meeting on September 10, will detail the LWML activities for the coming year.On the 1st Sunday of each month, is LWML Mite Box Sunday, where we share our mission goals with the KoG community. The major emphasis of the mites is the support of mission and ministry throughout the world by means of our mite box offerings. These mite box offerings have funded tens of millions of dollars in mission grants since the organization’s inception in 1942. Through this, we support local charities and missions. Operation Christmas Child opens the hearts and minds of children worldwide with a simple shoebox. Packed inside each shoebox along with toys, toiletries, school supplies, etc. is a booklet, “The Greatest Gift of All”, which explains the story of Christ and salvation through Him. What a wonderful way for these children to learn about the Gospel! King of Glory is proud to be a part of this exciting ministry. Each year in November there are shoeboxes available for you to take and fill with items that these children desire. When asked what gifts he would like to receive in a box, a boy in Manila responded, “school supplies … slippers … a pencil case … a pencil … anything that can be used for writing … and shoes.”Many of these items are things we take for granted, but to them it is something valuable. Some of these items can be picked up for a penny or a quarter when school sales begin. Such a little investment for us, but a spectacular gift for them…the love of Jesus.

Breadbreakers provides Christian Fellowship opportunities centered about social experience and allows participants to meet and get to know More KOG members. Funeral Meal Ministry

At KOG, we provide a “Celebration of Life” meal after all

funerals when requested by the family. Volunteers pre-

pare/purchase either finger sandwiches, salads or des-

serts for the meals, and drop them off at church for the

meal. Or they volunteer to help set up, clean up and/or

serve food at the meal. When you get an email blast from

Pastor that we are doing a funeral or memorial service

at church, email Robin Zophy to check on what kind of

help is needed. Help when you are able, not necessarily

for every funeral! Everyone is welcome to help with this

ministry! Families always express how much they appre-

ciate this ministry.




KOG MOPS offers support, Christian fellowship, and education to women with children ages birth through Kindergarten as

well as expecting mothers. The goal of the KOG MOPS ministry is to make sure that every mother of preschoolers knows

that MOPS exists, and that no mom is alone in the journey of motherhood. MOPS is open to those not only at KOG, but also

the Williamsburg community.

MOPS currently has two groups that meet twice per month, one on Monday Evenings (5-7pm) and the other on Tuesday

Mornings (9:30-11:30am). Childcare is provided for all meetings. Meetings consist of brunch/dinner, speakers, discussion

groups, mentor mom talks, creative activities, time for sharing, and prayer.

This year we are making an intentional effort to bond as mothers and families outside of the meetings themselves. There are

many opportunities to gather together, whether it be a simple mom and child play-date, a mom’s night out, mom’s and pop’s

bowling night or our annual family picnic. There is something for everyone and every schedule.

Beyond the bi-weekly meetings, MOPS also supports organizations like the Kelly Weinberg Foundation. Moms have the

opportunity to participate in community service projects from donations of baked cookies to greeting participants at their

local cancer support group. There are also opportunities to support new mothers and those going through family struggles

with supportive visits or delivered meals. [email protected]




The Grief Ministry at KOG consists of two, soon to be three, teams of caregivers who are available to provide meals, inspirational information as well asvisits to those who have experienced the loss of a close loved one. We are all good listeners and have shoulders to cry on if needed and arms to hug.

Stephen Ministry Leadership Training provides in depth training for the administration and promotion of the Stephen Ministry

program in the congregation, as well as specific skill training for in the areas of confidentiality issues, mental health referrals,

peer group supervision, boundaries, among others. We celebrate two new leaders: Lynn Miller and Joy Sawhill, who com-

pleted a week of intensive (!) training in Pittsburgh, PA July 29 – August 4th. They join the Leadership Team of Dan Scungio,

John Falck, Judy Kuehnert, Sharon McLean and Pastor Phil Kuehnert.

Stephen Ministry provides distinctively Christian care to those who are in need of support because of loss, life transitions,

illness or other situations. Stephen Ministers provide confidential care and receive ongoing supervision for their work.

At the present time there are over 20 active Stephen Ministers at King of Glory. They meet twice a month for continuing

education and supervision. Recruitment for the new Stephen Ministry Training Classes begins in October. Classes (50 hours of

training in 20 sessions) begin in January and are completed by early June.
