    SAFETY AND SECURITY

    CORNER

    WITH TIPS FROM DAVE RUTH

    DIRECTOR OF SECURITY

As the summer season enters its last full

month, there is still many activities and fun times

to be shared and enjoyed. So, before summer

ends, school begins, and thoughts turn to apple

cider and crisp cool evenings, here are some ad-

ditional tips to safely close out the summer.

Outdoor cooking, nothing beats it and it

brings smiles to everyone’s face, so let’s be safe.

Check that all equipment is in good working or-

der. Don’t light up unless you have everything

handy, never leave lit grills, fireplaces, etc. unat-

tended. Be aware of wind direction, where food

is being placed and how long it is being left ex-

posed. Simple food safety guides are easily and

    readily available.

Keeping your yard, walkways, and drive-

ways free of clutter keeps everyone safe. Any

outdoor equipment should be routinely checked

for any unusual wear and tear and fixed as need-

ed. Outdoor lighting needs to be adequate for

your use and replaced as needed. Simple things

    to reduce slips and falls.

Make sure you are using any pesticides per

directions, storing them safely out of reach of

children or pets. Personal bug spray, tiki torches

and other devices need to be maintained and

properly used and stored to avoid any harmful

accidents. Limit exposure to direct sunlight and

heat. Stay hydrated and seek shade, know the

warning signs for Heat Exhaustion and Heat

    Stroke.

Enjoy the rest of the summer.

NEWS FROM THE VSB… (Berks Heim Volunteer Service Board)

    CONGRATULATIONS, LORRAINE

We are saying a fond farewell to Lorraine Long, who is retiring from Berks Heim after 46 years. She started working as a Dietary Aide when she was 22 years old. Through the years she has worked as a Cook, a Cook Team Leader, a Supervisor and currently does Clerical work for the Dietary Dept. She also worked in the Re-ceiving and Scheduling Departments and at the Court-house. She is looking forward to enjoying time with her 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She has en-joyed all aspects of her working experience and says having an open mind in everything you do is a motto that is good to live by. Thank you Lorraine for the years you have been with us. You will be greatly missed!

    A LABOR OF LOVE

    Many of you may recognize volunteer Barbara Simpson;

pictured above in our main entrance flower bed. Some of

you may have seen her in this flower bed before...because

she is often pulling weeds and trimming flowers to keep

the bed looking lovely! She has also worked on other flow-

er beds on our campus but could really use a partner or two

to cover other areas. If you like gardening and would like

to volunteer, we would gladly show you around to give you

an idea of what help is needed. Just mention it to our recep-

tionist, who can get you in touch with our Volunteer Dept.

Meanwhile, be sure to enjoy the beautiful flowers as you

come and go or when you’re sitting outside. Nothing

    would make Barbara happier.

BLESSINGS and PRAY FOR GUIDANCE EVERY DAY!” JOHN WOODEN

So as you go through the month of August take time to regard every day as a SPECIAL GIFT FROM GOD

and tell Him, GOD THANK YOU FOR TODAY! Ps. 118:24 says, “THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD

HAD MADE, LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT!”
