I began my life in Danes in 1981 when after writing to countless

breeders (the old-fashioned hand-written mailed-letter way) someone

finally agreed to ship a show puppy to Alaska

That puppy owner-handled

by me went on to be the

youngest Dane in the breed (at

the time) to win a 5-point major

at 6 months and 2 days She

attained her AKC and CKC

championships CDs in both countries and she won several

group placements including

winning the group in Canada

(back in the day when there

was no Herding group - those

breeds were part of the

Working group)

I have been a member of the

GDCA since 1982 and have bred

a handful of litters over the

years I feel very fortunate to

have begun my dog career in

Alaska where we had very few

shows so we spent a lot of time attending seminars and taking part in other educational and training

opportunities by doing so I learned a lot about what I was looking at

I was fortunate enough to attend a live seminar put on by Rachel Paige

Elliott of OogSteps fame We spent days reviewing 16mm film about

structure and movement What a fabulous foundation to understanding

the connection between form and function I have attended well over

100 seminars since that time and feel that there is always more to learn

I have been a part of GDCA judges education as a student and have

served as a ringside mentor at a National I have judged 2 other

sweepstakes judge Australian Shepherds for ASCA and have judged

countless matches

I am a student of the dog and as a Great Dane breederownerhandler

for the past 37 years I am excited to judge your sweepstakes and thank

you for inviting me to your event

I got my first great Great Dane in 1969 breeding under the prefix of

DaneMate until I bred a bitch to CH Rojons Oh Boy V Meccadane and

produced CH DaneMates Tempest of Jacko

I decided to change my kennel name to Fame and in that same litter produced CH Rojons Fame Is The Tony (Of course the puppy named

Rojons Fame Is The Oscar never finished due to his loving dog shows

too much)

I bred several more litters with Rojon and produced several more

champions I stopped breeding and showing for a few years and

got back into the Arts creating and

selling Great Dane sculptures in

wood and bronze

I resumed breeding and

produced CH Fames Pre-Approved and CH Fames Above Prime I

repeated that breeding and

produced 3 more champions My

next litter produced 2 champions

And my last litter produced one

boy so I kept him He finished at 9

months with 4 majors a breed from the classes over 5 specials

and a BPIS In 2015 he was

ranked the number eight Great Dane in the country

I have always bred for myself so my breeding program has been

limited I look forward to the next phase of my Great Dane life and to

seeing the beautiful dogs and bitches you honor me to judge

PM Specialty Judge Judy Harrington My first show dog was a Great Dane

purchased as a companion from a breeder of quality She turned out to have some outstanding attributes that eventually led

to her being shown owner-handled with great success When she was awarded Winners Bitch at the National Specialty I

knew that I had begun a lifelong devotion

to the sport of purebred dogs

Under the kennel name of Justamere I

concentrated on breeding Great Danes that were sound and typey show dogs and good family companions Eventually my owner-handling led to a career as an all

breed handler

I had the opportunity to represent clients that entrusted me with dogs that to

this day remain as outstanding representations of their respective breeds I

finished the first uncropped Great Dane in the US and was also awarded WD with

the first natural eared Great Dane to win at a national specialty

I had fallen in love with the Australian Shepherd breed and have had them in my home for many years now The pleasure of having my companions also be highly

competitive BIS and specialty winning dogs is proof that you can have it all

I have served as an officer board member judges education chairperson show chairperson and several various committees in a number of clubs over the years It has been my pleasure to judge on a number of occasions outside the US

IFrance Sweden Finland Germany England and Australia with a future assignshyment in Brussels It has also been an honor to be invited to judge a number of national and regional specialties of various breeds as well as 4 Top 20 competitions at various national specialties Among previous assignments are the

prestigious Westminster Kennel Club and The Eukanuba National Championship

Ishows I am currently licensed to judge BIS all Working and Sporting breeds and various breeds in the Hound Toy and Herding Groups

I have enjoyed volunteer work at the Womens Center at a local hospital and also worked with the Equine Program for the Handicapped Prior to my involvement in the sport of dogs I had trained and shown Morgan Horses (the old

type)

Wishing all exhibitors breeders and spectators a most enjoyable show For all of us the passion for our sport has enriched our lives with friendships support and fond memories May they continue

4-6-Month Puppy Judge Diane Price My husband Ken and I have had Newfoundlands since 1975 when we purchased our

first dog from Shelby Guelich of Pooh Bear Kennels in California We have since been

devoted to this magnificent breed

In 1979 we took a pick male from Stormalong Kennels Brigus was one of the top producers in that era also becoming a ROM His true claim to fame was his son Multi BIS BISS CH Kendians Cad bury Cad bury was the number one Newfoundland for 2 years in a row and the number 10 working dog in the USA He was this countrys top winning bronze of all time back then Truly a very special dog who enabled Ken and me to meet so many wonderful people

We also had two other number one and two dogs in the USA Multi BISBISS CH Pouch Coves Call of the Wild (London) and AMDAN Multi BISS CH Pouch Coves Goodfellow (Andrew) Andrew spent six months in Denmark at Cannon bear Kennels and was the number one Stud Dog in Denmark for 2 years Londons daughter Kendi (Kendians In Your Eyes) was one of the top winning bitches in Europe and Andrews daughter Athena (BISMulti BISS VN CH Respons AKA Cookie) was the

number one bitch in the USA We are very proud of these accomplishments

We have had mostly males and later enjoyed the girls Lexus (Kendians Hurricane Lexus) - truly our first female - produced 2 wonderful litters for us We kept 4 of her get A total of 12 of our dogs I personally finished to their

championships always a challenge

It is a great honor in my life with Newfies to have judged sweepstakes at six Regional Specialties and at the 1998 National Specialty in California Since acquir ing my AKC judging license I am fortunate to have been asked to judge many shows here Iin the USA as well as abroad

I have judged 10 Newfoundland Specialties in this country and dog classes at the 2017 NCA National Specialty - a dream of mine I have also judged many Newfoundland National Specialties throughout the world Italy 3 times Germany 3 times Spain Norway-Sweden (their Morokulien show) the 2014 Fed Cup in Bratslavia and another dream judging assignment the 50th Anniversary Gold Cup in Denmark These events have given me so much not only in my appreciation of seeing so many beautiful Newfoundlands but also in meeting wonderful people allover the

world many of whom have become close friends

I have been a member of the Northern California Newfoundland Club since 1977 and the Newfoundland Club of America since 1979 serving on committees for both clubs I am a Breed Mentor for the Newfoundland Club of America and have chairedcoshychaired eight Regional Specialties and was part of the Show Committee for the 2005

Great Dane Breed Standard Working Group

General Appearance The Great Dane combines in its regal appearance dignity strength and elegance with great size and a powerful well-formed smoothly muscled body It is one of the giant working breeds but is unique in that its general conformation must be so well balanced that it never appears clumsy and shall move with a long reach and powerful drive It is always a unit-the Apollo of dogs A Great Dane must be spirited courageous never timid always friendly and dependable This physical and mental combination is the characteristic which gives the Great Dane the majesty possessed by no other breed It is particularly true of this breed that there is an impression of great masculinity in dogs as compared to an impression of femininity in bitches Lack of true Dane breed type as defined in this standard is a serious fault

Size Proportion Substance The male should appear more massive throughout than the bitch with larger frame and heavier bone In the ratio between length and height the Great Dane should be square In bitches a somewhat longer body is permissible providing she is well proportioned to her height Coarseness or lack of substance are equally undesirable The male shall not be less than 30 inches at the shoulders but it is preferable that he be 32 inches or more providing he is well proportioned to his height The female shall not be less than 28 inches at the shoulders but it is preferable that she be 30 inches or more providing she is well proportioned to her height Danes under minimum height must be disqualified

Head The head shall be rectangularmiddot long distinguished expressive finely chiseled especially below the eyes Seen from the side the Danes forehead must be sharply set off from the bridge of the nose (a strongly pronounced stop) The plane of the skull and the plane of the muzzle must be straight and parallel to one another The skull plane under and to the inner point of the eye must slope without any bony protuberance in a smooth line to a full square jaw with a deep muzzle (fluttering lips are undesirable) The masculinity of the male is very pronounced in structural appearance of the head The bitchs head is more delicately formed Seen from the top the skull should have parallel sides and the bridge of the nose should be as broad as possible The cheek muscles should not be prominent The length from the tip of the nose to the center of the stop should be equal to the length from the center of the stop to the rear of the slightly developed occiput The head should be angular from all sides and should have flat planes with dimensions in proportion to the size of the Dane Whiskers may be trimmed or left natural Eyes shall be medium size deep set and dark with a lively intelligent expression The eyelids are almond-shaped and relatively tight with well developed brows Haws and mongolian eyes are serious faults In harlequins the eyes should be dark light colored eyes eyes of different colors and walleyes are permitted but not desirable Ears shall be high set medium in size and of moderate thickness folded forward close to the cheek The top line of the folded ear should be level with the skull If cropped the ear length is in proportion to the size of the head and the ears are carried uniformly erect Nose shall be black except in the blue Dane where it is a dark blue-black A black spotted nose is permitted on the harlequin a pink colored nose is not desirable A split nose is a disqualification Teeth shall be strong well developed clean and with full dentition The incisors of the lower jaw touch very lightly the bottoms of the inner surface of the upper incisors (scissors bite) An undershot jaw is a very serious fault Overshot or wry bites are serious faults Even bites misaligned or crowded incisors are minor faults

I began my life in Danes in 1981 when after writing to countless

breeders (the old-fashioned hand-written mailed-letter way) someone

finally agreed to ship a show puppy to Alaska

That puppy owner-handled

by me went on to be the

youngest Dane in the breed (at

the time) to win a 5-point major

at 6 months and 2 days She

attained her AKC and CKC

championships CDs in both countries and she won several

group placements including

winning the group in Canada

(back in the day when there

was no Herding group - those

breeds were part of the

Working group)

I have been a member of the

GDCA since 1982 and have bred

a handful of litters over the

years I feel very fortunate to

have begun my dog career in

Alaska where we had very few

shows so we spent a lot of time attending seminars and taking part in other educational and training

opportunities by doing so I learned a lot about what I was looking at

I was fortunate enough to attend a live seminar put on by Rachel Paige

Elliott of OogSteps fame We spent days reviewing 16mm film about

structure and movement What a fabulous foundation to understanding

the connection between form and function I have attended well over

100 seminars since that time and feel that there is always more to learn

I have been a part of GDCA judges education as a student and have

served as a ringside mentor at a National I have judged 2 other

sweepstakes judge Australian Shepherds for ASCA and have judged

countless matches

I am a student of the dog and as a Great Dane breederownerhandler

for the past 37 years I am excited to judge your sweepstakes and thank
