a transgression of Gods law and will. It is

    disobedience against the commandment of

    the Lord. (Dt. 28:15)

    NEW TESTAMENT

The gospel of St. Luke (15:11-23)

    considers sin as an ungrateful

dissertation of the Lord. St. Paul

defines sin as mans wickednessand a denial of the glorification due

to God and the presumption attempt

to be ones own Lord. (Rom.1:18-32)

    III. Concupiscence and Capital Sin

    A. Having been born into a sinfulcondition, the human beings natural

and original capacities to love God

    have been distorted. This distortion,

one of the effects ofOriginal Sin is

    called concupiscence

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    27/42

    Concupiscence is the disorder of

desires which, while not sin in theproper sense, comes from original

sin and inclines us to sin.

This inclination to sin is oftentimesmanifested in certain sins traditionally

    called Seven Capital Sins. They

called capital because they are the

    root cause of many sins.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    28/42

    SEVEN CAPITAL SINS

    1. PRIDE Exalting oneselfbeyond what

    is due and true

    2. LUST - Disordered desire for or

    inordinate enjoyment of sexualpleasure

    3. ANGER Destructive aggressiveness

    DYNAMICS OF SIN

Sin is not immediately committed. It follows a sequence of event. And

when it is committed, it continues to

possess an influence to man so thatman is moved to commit more sins as

    a rolling effect.

    1. Innocent Glance: all sins starts with a

sinless and innocent glance of a

    possible temptation.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    31/42

    2. Deceptive Offer of Good. When the

person takes a second look andperceives a pleasurable good that it

    seems to offer. Temptation has

    entered his conscious mind.

    3. Desire Here the person starts to

    desire the deceptive good. But

unless the decision is not made, no

    sin is made.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    32/42

    4.Decision When the person desire

to acquire the desired good which isforbidden. He committed an internal

    sin, which is real sin.

    5. External Action The personcommands his external faculties to

commit the sin consented by the will

to do. This is the completion of sin,

where internal sin is completed withthe external act of sinning.

    33/42

    EFFECTS OF SINS:

    Since sin is a deliberate chosenwrong act with full knowledge of itsevilness, it has serious effects tothe person committing it, such as;

    1.Blinds the Intellect

when a person sins, he losesdistinction of what is right fromwrong. He no longer sees theevilness of what his will chose asgood.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    34/42

    2. Weakens the Will

When the sin is done, he or she losesits natural light from intellect but on the

    sense-appetite. It easily succumbs to

any temptation offered by the sense.

    3. Torments the Person

After sin is committed the person

suffers either mental or physical torture

of committing sin. If he is a sinner hefinds great pleasure in the sin and craves

    for it always.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    35/42

    4. Defiles the person

when a person commits a serioussin it automatically kill his divine

dignity and image. He will continue

to do more sins than before becausehis life supported only sin.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    36/42

    B. Sin is Contagious and destructive.

    Example:

Gen. 4:3-8 - The story of Cain & Abel

Gen. 6: 5ff - The story of the flood

Gen. 11: 1-9 The Story of Babel

    Rom 5:12,19 By mans disobedience

many were made sinners. Sin enterinto the world through our first

    parents.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    37/42

Human nature has not been totallycorrupted it is wounded in the natural

power, proper to it, to ignorance,

suffering and domination of death and

    inclined to sin.

Human being is basically good but

    wounded.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    38/42

All is in need of a Savior.

God did not abandon man. God sent his Son

Christ alone takes away sin and

    reconciles us with God.

  • 8/4/2019 Midterm Notes 2

    39/42

The human person is so precious for

God that ever after the worst sin is

committed, there is still in him/her aremnant of Gods image and likeness, a

natural longing for wholeness on which

grace can build. Rebirth, however, is notpossible without a profound sorrow, and

a perfect contrition for sins. Contrition is

a new encounter with God. There is a

need for us to repent each time we sin,ask forgiveness and healing through the

    sacrament of Reconciliation.
