This newsletter is again filled with loads of information on life in and around our Midrand Estates community. It provides answers to questions asked by many, provides information on questions not yet even raised, and aims to leave no question unanswered. And think carefully about the question asked by one of our contributors: “How much do you think you are worth?”

We trust that autumn of 2012 finds our readers in good health and that this news letter will again provide infor-mation that is both uplifting and informative on life in Midrand Estates. Hamba Kahle – may ye go well.

Met die viering van Moedersdag en Vadersdag, is die term “sagmoedig” onlangs in ‘n huldeblyk aan ouers deur ‘n ander lens bekyk. Wat beteken dit om sagmoedig te wees? “Sag” word dikwels aan die teerheid van ‘n moe-der gekoppel, met “moed”igheid wat byna grens aan ‘n heldeverering en meestal aan vaders toegeeïen word. Om ‘n ouer te wees, verg inderdaad moed. En sagtheid. Die spreker noem dit “power in control”. Dit is nogal ‘n kuns om daardie sagtheid tesame met die vermoë om altyd in beheer te wees, te bemeester. Maar elke ouer sal beaam dat daar geen groter seën en voorreg is as om “Mamma” of “Pappa” genoem te word nie.

Mag julle moed hê om die koue [klimaat, emosionele hindernisse] te trotseer; en mag daar altyd ‘n sagte om-helsing wees om die hart warmer te maak.

Since the first family moved into Midstream at the end of 2003 the Midrand Estates community has grown to almost 3 000 families. The management of the 700 hectare residential precinct holds both a challenge and a considerable benefit for those residing in the area. Following enquiries the team at Midrand Estates News obtained information from some of the role players in order to gain a better understanding of how the gears fit together in managing the area.

The land upon which Midrand Estates has been developed was owned by the Erasmus family in the early 1900’s and was purchased by Bondev in 2000. Our first point of call was with Bondev where one of the di-rectors, Jan Zeederberg, gave the following report.

“The area now known as Midrand Estates has been named after an area that was historically known as Midrand which indicated its position as midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In 1998 the De-marcation board determined that the Midrand Estates land was to be incorporated into the Ekurhuleni Metro. The name Midrand Estates was adopted as a communal name for the estates that were to follow and to bear reference to the historical geographical reference. Midstream was the first estate and got its name through the combined reference to Midrand and the stream that runs through the estate.

The Ekurhuleni Metro, as the local author-ity, has been oversee-ing the development to ensure Bondev, as developer, meet its ob-ligations as described in the Conditions of Esta-blishment and Services Agreement of each de-velopment phase. As soon as a phase has been completed, the Metro allow transfer of the properties to take place, thereby signaling that the requirements have been complied with. Three of the conditions that touch the lives of every resident are that a governing body had to be established to take control of the area (the HOA), that the roads beyond the control gates will become the property of the HOA and finally that the open areas and road reserves within the estate be transferred to the HOA.

Bondev aimed to establish a new residential development with the focus on a complete family life; and for that reason also identified the need for schools, churches, recreational facilities as well as of-fices and a local shopping centre. The sustained growth of the estate bears testimony that it is an estate fit for families”.

On understanding how the HOA came about, we requested the Midstream HOA Chair – Advocate Koot My-burgh – to provide more background on the legalities surrounding the HOA.

“The HOA is registered as a Non-profit company in terms of the Companies Act (previously known as a Sect 21 company). The HOA as a company is managed by a Board of Directors that must be elected at the Annual General Meeting and managed in accordance with the registered Memorandum of In-corporation – “MOI” - (known as the Articles of Association under the earlier act) of the company, as determined by the Companies Act. In terms of the MOI of the HOA a stand owner becomes a member of the HOA on the date of transfer of the property into his/ her name and enjoys the benefits and ac-cepts the responsibilities as member from that date. The MOI also allows the Board to publish House Rules that determine the way in which matters within the estate will be managed.

The prime objective of the House Rules is to promote, enhance and protect the com-munal interests of the members of the HOA. It is essential that members abide by the House Rules to ensure that all in the Estate live in harmony with one another and that the administration of the Estate can function in a proper manner. The House Rules are enforceable by the Di-rectors by way of fines and can, in certain cir-cumstances, be en-forced through a Court of Law.

The structure of the HOA can be sum-marised as one where families can determine the management of their own environment within a well governed and stable system – it is a system of managing the people within the HOA by the people of the HOA. The Board and HOA staff is an extended part of every family and ensures the estate is managed in accordance with the wishes of the majority.”

With the clear knowledge that a number of estates exist within Midrand Estates we requested the chair of the Midfield HOA – Mr André Oberholzer – to give us more information on the inter-relationship between the HOAs.

“It is important to take note that each HOA is a legal entity that acts for its own account within the realm of its founding statements. However, there is a lot to be gained by combining forces on a num-ber of issues to create a precinct beyond the boundaries of a single HOA.

A specific example of such a service is the 24/7 paramedic service where the HOA committed contribu-tions from their members to establish a service that has made a change in the lives of many families. The HOAs also combine their collective efforts in providing security services beyond the access gates of each estate ensuring that families are able to enjoy themselves within a secure environment that spans further than the boundaries of each HOA. It is recognised that all will prosper by managing their own area, whilst also acting in the interest of the greater area”.

Our final port of call on the determination of the levy and the annual budget was with Chris Smith. Chris is a director of Bondev and currently the Chair of the Midlands HOA and during the initial years of every HOA he has been instrumental in setting the tone in respect of the budgets.

“The basic principle in preparing the budget is to determine an income that will match the expenses as closely as possible. Over time the HOAs within Midrand Estates have been able to record the low-est HOA levy when compared to other estates whilst accumulating considerable reserve funds with the combined value of the reserve funds of all the HOAs at almost R20 million. (Note: The reserve funds are assets of individual HOAs and not shared). The reserve funds will be utilised in time for the replacement of electronic, security related gear every 3rd to 5th year and maintenance work to the roads and storm water systems within the estates – without the need to raise a special capital levy.

More than 50% of the HOA budget is spent on security with a further 25% on the maintenance of facilities and open areas and the remainder on the administration related functions of the HOA. The budget reflects the HOA priorities to establish and maintain a secure environment for families where they can enjoy the outdoors whilst maintaining high levels of management through appropriate ad-ministration.”

Inviting all Retire@Midstream [and other residents]…

As you may be aware, the Retire@Midstream Estate has a number of bowling facilities available. These comprise a two-rink indoor carpeted bowling surface and a seven-rink outdoor bowling green.

The indoor facility is managed and run by the R@M HOA and booking for the facility must be done through the HOA office [012 940 9555] who will be able to assist with information on availability and costs. A li-mited number of bowl sets are available for visitors. The outdoor bowling facilities are managed and run by a committee of R@M residents, established by the R@M HOA.

The club is in the process of being affiliated to Bowls Gauteng North [BGN] and Bowls South Africa [BSA].

The R@M Bowling Committee holds formal bowling sessions on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 13:30 and on Tuesdays at 08:45 for those who are al-ready able to play the game. Bowlers who play for other clubs and live in the estate are welcome to come along as visitors and join these sessions, for a small “green fee”. The standard of tennis was impressive and the winners had to exercise skill and determination to earn the top positions. Just like humans, dental care is an important part of your pet’s overall health. Here is a step-by-step guide to kee-ping your dog’s chompers sparkling white…

1 Start brushing your pet’s teeth early Eight to twelve weeks old is best although you may need to stop brushing while your pet loses its baby teeth. Your pup’s mouth will be a bit sore and handling may cause more pain. Continue once all permanent teeth come in.

2 Work with your pet’s mouth Be patient and make it fun. Use love and praise; and try to practice at the same time each day to establish a routine. Choose a quiet time, or, if your pet is motivated by food, try just before dinner so your pet will be rewarded for its coop-eration.

3 Handle your pet’s snout and touch its lips Work up to rubbing the teeth and gums gently with your finger. Put a few drops of water, flavored with low-sodium chicken or beef gravy for dogs, in your pet’s mouth and your pet will start looking forward to these sessions. Hold a soft brush at a 45° angle to the tooth and brush gently back and forth or in circu-lar movements from gum to tip.

4 Consider other dental aids A large selection of veterinary toothpastes, oral rinses and gels are available. These products enhance your home care program, but daily brushing is best. Avoid human toothpaste because fluoride and detergents can be harmful if swallowed. Hydrogen peroxide can be harsh on the gums and shouldn’t be swallowed ei-ther. Baking soda has a high sodium content and should be avoided in older pets.

The rate of development in Midrand Estates has placed pressure on the availability and capacity of service from cell phone service providers. The ques-tion has been raised on what actions are underway to improve the situation. It has been confirmed that both Vodacom and MTN are actively planning to improve reception in the area and has committed themselves to develop and share towers as the de-mand develops. Where the earlier process required a full environmental study, a simplified and quicker process, managed by the local authority, can be fol-lowed after a revision of the regulations.

The process being followed involves the completion of a reception design, entering into an agreement with the land owner, obtaining approval from the lo-cal authority and then developing the tow-ers. In all instances both Vodacom and MTN committed themselves to develop tow-ers that will accommodate up to four cell phone service providers. To accelerate the development of towers it was determined

that Vodacom would develop towers north of Mid-lands and MTN within Midlands Estate.

Psychologists, Psych iat r i s ts and Sociol-ogists have been seeking to answer this question for decades .The three mistakes

we make when looking to answer it, are:

1. We measure ourselves / our worth by all we have, i.e. material things (though it may even be health, strength, position, achievements, children, our standing in the com-munity, our sporting awards, graduate and post-graduate de-grees, etc).

2. The problem with this way of mea-suring our value is that all can be lost. All can deteriorate; all can fail. We are all familiar with the Global Recession, the Twin Towers or Cancer, Aids, Fatalities on our roads, Crime?...

Jesus never puts value on earthly possessions – He knows how ter-ribly vulnerable they ALL are.

3. We measure ourselves / our worth by the mistakes we have made.

The trouble is, most of us with a conscience have made an awful lot of mistakes... some of them too horrible to speak of. We bury them, we think, but maybe THEY bury US.

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.... Hear the words of Grace: “Your sins ARE forgiven”

4. Work it out for yourself: “I am not what I think I am; I am not what you think I am. I am what I think, you think, I am”.

Simple interpretation: I try to live up to others’ expectations; I live my life for others... but some-times I have missed totally what they hope, expect or want of me. How ridiculous. No wonder I live a constantly unfulfilled life. Others’ expectations? What about God’s plan for my life?

All Jesus expects from me is to live life to the full. Acknowledge his leadership and guidance. What fools we are if we let others rule who or what we may become!

A real answer

One of the most well-known of all the

Scripture passages tells us that God sent His only beloved Son that ALL who believe in Him may be saved. (John 3:16: have eternal life). This includes ALL of us – wealthy or poor; mistake-riddled or relatively honest (note the word “relatively”). Your own person, or ruled by others’ ex-pectations, hopes, disappointments? There is only one real answer.

The Maker of All that is, loved you so much (even broken as all of us are) that He allowed His Son to die in order that we might have an op-portunity of everlasting life. Love so great... how inconsequential to let things, mistakes or other people’s opinions separate you and me from the love of God. Somebody died for us; we must be worth infinitely more than the price we have placed upon ourselves.

Toss the rubbish, you are redeemed (Saved and Forgiven)

In March this year the opening of the new access road was awaited with eager anticipation and also with baited breath. The question on the lips of most was – “will it really make a difference or will it be more of the same with hours spent on the road every morning? “

To date the results have been astounding with those without pupils at school trying to discern whether school has started again. The quick link to Centurion has changed the lives for many and now also pre-sents an alternative route in case of an emergency.

A recent traffic count by the engineering consultants at the Midstream Drive/Brakfontein Road intersection provided the following information:

- All outbound vehicles from the estates left the intersection within a single traffic light cycle – the maxi-mum waiting time at the intersection for outbound traffic thus being 90 seconds;

- 2791 vehicles passed through the intersection during the observed morning peak hour with 30% being inbound and 70% leaving the estates;

- 35% of the outbound traffic uses Midstream Drive (65% still using Brakfontein Road). For inbound traf-fic the ratio of cars using Midstream Drive is slightly higher at 40%;

- Currently the peak time for morning traffic is between 7:05 and 7:25;

- The traffic lights cycles’ change during the course of the day to render an optimum balance between a short waiting time and flow of traffic. This will be adjusted in future according to observations at the intersection.

- Timed photographs from the observation cameras installed at the intersection confirm that a free traffic flow currently takes place between 6 and 8 am.

After Bondev gave notice that an environmental study for the development would commence, the first infor-mation on the planning phase of the new development to the east of Midstream and Midfield was published in a previous newsletter In the last two months the following has taken place:

• The development has been named Midstream Ridge;

• An open day, where per-tinent information on the development was made known, took place on 18 April with 300 registered visitors passing through the exhibition;

• Visitors were requested to indicate their prefer-ence on the type of de-velopment, with an over-whelming majority voting in favour of a low density development with 1400 residential units opposed to a higher density with more than 4000 residen-tial units.

• A draft project scoping re-port has now been com-pleted and is currently available for review.

Comments on the scoping report from the Provincial Department responsible for environmental affairs will be available where after the environmental impact assessment (EIA) will be completed. A further open day is envisaged as soon as all the studies have been finalized. In the interim the environmental consultants are distributing a project specific newsletter to all those on their mailing list. MIDRAND-ESTATES!It is nearing the middle of the Year and so much has already happened. I am sure everyone will agree that the new road has made a huge positive impact on the now, almost forgotten traffic conges-tion experienced in the beginning of the year. With the last few Extensions of Midlands Estate about to be launched we are astounded at the high demand for the stands on sale. Before the year ends, Mid-lands Estate will be completely sold out!

Midstream Ridge is undergoing the planning and approval phase of it’s development, and as a result of the demand outweighing the short term supply of stands, Bondev has decided to launch the long awaited Midhill Estate in October of this year to ans-wer the demands of the marketplace! This is very exciting news for the many buyers who have shown interest in buying the bigger stands of up to 3000 sqm. There will however also be stands available from 600sqm and above for any buyers interested in the smaller to average size stands.

Retire@Midstream is active in the whole sense of the word. The growing number of residents can be seen in the increased activity in the main building, bowling green, Botanical Garden and in the Restau-

rant. Sales of the Full Title stands have surged in the last few months and the plans for new homes are coming in steadily. Soon x42 will have many new neighbours as the building projects are com-pleted. On the Sectional Title side sales continue at a steady pace and can still offer you a 2 Bedroom Unit, the plans of which you can view at our Sales Office in the main building of Retire@Midstream.

The wheels on the bus go round and round…

The Midstream College buses have become a well known beacon at school events with their easily recognizable livery. With the primary aim being the safe trans-portation of learners, the College recently enrolled the drivers in a “Defensive Driver Development Program”. The program covers various aspects surround-

ing the road environment, road user interaction and most importantly the safety of the passengers. The pro-gram places great emphasis on the thinking patterns of drivers, how to adapt to changing conditions on the road and then the responsibility in transporting scholars.

ON THE ROAD WITH US

Drivers skills were refreshed on safe driving principles by applying a pro-ac-tive approach on the road. Driver at-titude influences driver perceptions and behaviour on the road and therefore, by changing driver attitude, behaviour is also influenced positively.

These staff members of the College ful-fil an important service and we all wish them well and many safe hours behind the wheel.

Dr Kriek was appointed as Headmaster to Mid-stream College in April 2006. He came to Midstream from Affies, where he was Deputy Head and Head of sport for 11 years. He taught Maths and Additional Mathematics to Matrics for many years and was privileged to coach players like AB de Vil-liers, Faf du Plessis, Fourie du Preez, Pierre Spies and Wynand Olivier.

Dr Kriek obtained numerous degrees through the University of Pretoria inclu-ding a M.Sc. in Mathematics and a Ph.D.

in Maths Curricula for High Schools. He is currently one of the Umalusi external moderators for all the Maths papers written in South Africa at Grade 12 level.

Under his guidance the College has become a well established school within a mere five years. Carel is married to Anneke, a teacher and they have two children, Christian (14) and Mia (12).

Michelle Clark joined the College in April 2007, having taught at Hoër-skool Waterkloof for four-teen years. She graduated from RAU (University of Johannesburg) with a B.A. (Ed.) and BA (Hons) degree.

She joined the management team at Midstream in 2009 as Head of Leadership and Discipline. Her passion in life is teaching and making a difference in the lives of the learners. Her compassion has made her one of the most beloved teachers at the College. She enjoys ta-

Hans is in 2007 aange-stel as Adjunkhoof by Mid-stream College, waar hy alle sportverwante aangeleenthede as Hoof van Sport bestuur. Hy was voorheen verbonde aan Hoërskool Dr EG Jansen as Adjunkhoof. Hy behaal B.A.(Ed.) en B.A. (Hons.) grade in Afrikaans en Sielkunde aan die Uni-versiteit van Pretoria. Hans is ‘n ywerige sportentoesias wat ‘n paar Comrades wedlope agter sy naam kan skryf. Hy span tans sy kennis en ervaring as provinsiale afrigter van atletiek en rugby spanne in as middelafstandatlete afrigter. Per geleent-heid help hy uit by die rugby. Hans is as sekretaris van die Noordvaal Hoërskole Rugbyvereniging verantwoordelik vir al die reëlings rakende die Beeldtrofee. Sy liefde vir Afrikaans en veral skolesport leef hy uit met sy stokperdjie as vryskutjoernalis vir Beeld en Rapport. Hy is sedert 1989 medewerker vir Beeld en Rapport waar hy hoofsaaklik op skole-sport fokus.

Hy is getroud met Hildegard, ‘n Spraakterapeut, en het twee dogters, Aliza, ‘n grafiese ontwerper en Caryn, wat aan die Universiteit van Sydney studeer.

MR LEONARD SWART

Mr Swart has been at Midstream College since it opened its doors in January 2007. He joined the College as the Academic Head from Hoër-skool Waterkloof, having also taught at Affies.

He graduated from the University of Pretoria with a B.A. (Ed.) in Eng-lish and a B.Ed. in School Management and has always taught English as an additional language. He enjoys endurance sport and travelling abroad - his 20 Comrades marathons, three as-cents of Kilimanjaro and recent Cape Epic Moun-tain Bike Challenge are testimony thereof. He plans to do the Ironman next year.

He is married to Sandra, an Accountant, and has two sons, Carlo (14) and Brendan (12), both in Midstream College.

Ferdi Niemand was appointed as Deputy Principal in January 2007. Pri-or to his appointment at Midstream, he had served as Deputy Principal at Hoërskool Zwartkop in Centurion. He started his career at Hoërskool Zwartkop as a teacher in 1990 and left the school after 17 years of ser-vice to take up a management position at Midstream College.

Ferdi studied at the University of Pretoria and obtained B.A., B.A. (Hons.) and M.Ed. degrees in history and School Management. Today Ferdi acts as Head of Culture and Discipline, and was re-cently elected as the Chairman of the Blue Bulls High Schools Rugby Associa-tion. During the winter months you are sure to find him somewhere in the veld,

either hunting or relaxing in the Kruger Park.

He is married to Lorinda and have two daughters, Annerine and Lilandi, both in Midstream College.

Dirk started his teaching career in 1990 and joined Midstream College from Dr EG Jansen in Septem-ber of its inception year. Dirk obtained a B.Sc., H.O.D.(N.), B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Ed. and a doctorate in Environmental Education from RAU (University of Johannesburg).

Being in the people business has always been his passion. Playing an active role in learners’ lives and having the chance to positively contrib-ute to their well being is central to his mission at the College. Being the Head of Educational Guidance, coaching the 1st rugby team and teach-ing Life Sciences create the opportunity for him to live out his calling.

Dirk plans to move to Midfield later this year with his wife, Adele and their two children, Dewald (16) and Dejeanni (14), who are both in Mid-stream College

Dit is ʼn vraag wat voëlvriende dikwels vra en waarop daar nie ʼn maklike antwoord gegee kan word nie, veral omdat daar oor die algemeen van ons Suid-Afrikaanse voëls min inligting beskikbaar is. Die gegewens, wat in hierdie artikel gebruik word, is van Europa en tot ʼn mindere mate van Suid-Afrika afkomstig.

Ons weet almal, dat ons Afrika Olifant tussen 60 en 70 jaar kan leef en dat skil-paaie die geseënde ouderdom van 175 jare kan bereik. Maar watter ouderdom kan voëls in die algemeen en meer spesifiek ons Suid-Afrikaanse voëls bereik?

Daar bestaan ʼn noue verband tussen lewensverwagting en grootte van voëls. Groot voëls soos Arende, Uile en Reiers, maar veral seevoëls soos Albatrosse en Storm-voëls, leef baie langer as klein voëls.

Studies in Europa wys, dat Bloureiers 23 jare, Nonnetjieuile 15 jare en groot “Laysan“ Albatrosse amper 60 jare oud kan word. Voëls in aanhouding leef natuurlik ook baie langer en Papegaaie kan ʼn ouderdom van 100 jare bereik. Meeste Europese lande het ʼn lang en effektiewe “ringprogram” geskiedenis,

jong voëls word gereeld met metaalringe voorsien, wat datum en omgewing aandui. Dit gee redelik akkurate inligting oor leeftyd en ook informasie oor hul swerf gewoontes.

Studies oor Europese Rooikeel Robins, dit is tuin voëls effens kleiner as ons Janfrederikke, het ontstellende resultate opgelewer nl. dat Rooikeel Robins gewoonlik gemiddeld net 1.1 tot 1.2 jare leef. Dus, as ʼn paartjie hierdie somer in ʼn tuin broei, sal ʼn ander paartjie volgende somer hulle plek inneem.

Hoekom is hulle lewe so kort? Die meeste kuikens sterf in die nes of net na nes-verlating uit onkunde en onbeholpenheid. Net 10 tot 20% van alle baba voëls bereik volwassenheid. Maar voëls van alle ouderdomme kan deur honger, siektes, gifstowwe, ongelukke, die risiko van migrasie ens. doodgaan. Katte speel ook ʼn groot rol. So, ongeveer, die helfte van volwasse voëls en baba voëls sal binne ʼn jaar dood wees. Die meeste van die kleiner voëlsoorte het ʼn soortgelyke oorle-wingssyfer. Maar daar is gelukkig ʼn verskil tussen die gemiddelde en die langste lewensverwagting, en so het die oudste Rooikeel Robin 8.5 jare oud geword.

SAFRING is ons Suid-Afrikaanse voëlring eenheid, en volgens hul rekords word die volgende ouderdomme vir sekere van ons voëls gerapporteer: Die Huismossie, Swartkeelgeelvink, Rooivink, Rooikeelflap en Goudwewer word onderskeidelik 15, 11.5, 9, 6.5 jare en 25 maande oud. Dikbekwewers, en Janfrederikke wat gevang is, se ringe het getoon dat hulle onderskeidelik al 4 jaar en 299 dae en 6 jare leef.

Die studies toon dat ons Suid-Afrikaanse voëls langer leef. Hulle hoef nie winterelemente soos ys en sneeu te trotseer, of tienduisende kilometers ver te migreer

op soek na kos en beskerming nie. Maar ook hulle ervaar baie van dieselfde gevare as die voëlspesies in Europa.

Laat ons met waardering en liefde na ons geveerde vriende kyk en elkeen waar-deer, so lank hulle vir ons gespaar bly.

Die jaarlikse Assupol-rugbydag wat gewoonlik by die LC de Villiers sport-

gronde plaasvind, is vanjaar by Midstream College met groot sukses aangebied.

Op 24 Maart 2012 het 64 skole se eerstespanne van regoor Pretoria teen me-kaar gespeel. Tydens een van die 32 wedstryde het Midstream College Primêre

Skool se eerstespan Laer-skool Danie Malan met 26-7

geklop. Die dubbeldoel Assupol-rugbydag word ge-bruik om skeidsregters van verskeie laerskole prak-ties te evalueer na die afloop van hulle geskrewe eksamen. So ook word die spelers noukeurig dop-gehou vir die Blou Bul-proewe wat later vanjaar plaasvind.

Midstream College het dertien spelers wat aan die distriksproewe deelgeneem het waarvan ses spelers na die Blou Bul-proewe deurgedring het. Die vol-gende leerders is nou deel van die Blou Bulle-span: Evan Roos (o/12), Eben Odendaal (o/12), Divan van Wyk (o/13), Heinrich Botha (o/13).

Midstream College Primêre Skool huisves talryke, talentvolle sportmanne en -vroue. Nicola de Bruyn, ’n Goliat-meisiekind in Graad 7, moet egter uitge-sonder word. In die sewe jaar wat Nicola haarself in Midstream College gevestig het, het sy ’n handelsnaam ge-word. ’n Bekende, gewilde en vreesaanjaende wapen. Midstream College Primêre Skool se ongeslypte diamant, Brendan Swart, is as die nommer drie speler vir die Interprovinsiale Tennis-toernooi in Bloemfontein gekies. Brendan hou tans die nommer een posisie in die skool se eerstespan. Brendan en sy skool-spanmaats; Wian Janse van Rensburg, Dale Ger-ber en Rohann Rorich het saam in die skoolliga deelgeneem en onder die spelers van die A-liga naam gemaak. Hulle het vyf uit die sewe wedstryde wat hulle gespeel het, gewen.Wanneer die opposisie druk, is Brendan se glansende gifhou die span se troefkaart. Sy Babolat Pure Drive Plus-raket en die ure waarmee afrigters Dawie Eybers en Dentin Meintjies saam met hom spandeer, het natuurlik ook iets daarmee te doen. Brendan glo ook dat toewy-ding en deursettingsvermoë jou plat op die tennisbaan hou. Een van sy grootste drome is om eendag vir die nasionale span te speel.Onthou die naam Brendan Swart, want sy toekoms is nie net helder-kleurig nie, maar ook helderblink.

Die ATKV-uitdunne het vanjaar op 21 Maart 2012 by Hoërskool Men-lopark plaasgevind. Midstream College Primêre Skool het hulself uiters goed van hul taak gekwyt en soos altyd die beoordelaars beïndruk. Leerders het elk twee toesprake gelewer – ’n voorbereide toespraak wat tydens die skool se interne redenaarsuitdunne by Midstream College gelewer is en ’n onvoorbereide toespraak waar-van die onderwerp slegs by die uitdunne bekend gemaak is. Gr. 1-5 moes ’n onvoorbereide vraag

beantwoord en Gr. 6-7 moes ’n onvoorbereide toespraak uitwerk en lewer. Deelnemers het 30 minute gehad om die onderwerp “Is agt ure se slaap nodig?” voor te berei. Die skool se redenaars het soos ‘n paal bo water uitgestaan in hulle netheid, voorbereiding, selfver-troue en oorspronklike toesprake. Dihan de Bod (Gr. 4) en Robynne Scheepers (Gr. 7) het die gehoor oorrompel met hul vaardighede. Gevolglik het Dihan en Robynne deurgedring na die halfeindronde wat op 1 Junie 2012 weer by

Hoërskool Menlopark gehou word. Daar sal nie veel geslaap word voordat hierdie belangrike dag aanbreek nie. Seker so net onder die agt ure.

Om ons reënval by die Landgoed beter te verstaan, is dit nodig om die reënval patroon oor ʼn lang tydperk (verkieslik 30 jaar) waar te neem en te interpreteer. Hiervoor is die reënval gedurende ons reënseisoene by die Midrand Landgoed/ Irene omgewing vir die laaste 18 jaar (beskikbare datastelsel) ontleed.

Ons jaarlikse reënval word deur die ewigdurende aardsiklus, met geringe invloede van die Indiese Oseaan, koue fronte en dalk El-Nino ens. bepaal en strek omtrent oor 245 dae, wat ooreenkom met ons Lente, Somer en Herfs en as somerreënval streek bekend staan. Ons Landgoed is op die binnelandse plato in hier-die streek geleë. Ons daaglikse reënval word hoofsaaklik verkry van donderweer en donderstorms met neerslae oor relatief klein areas.

Die reënval datastel vir die Irene weerstasie is verkry van www.tutiempo.net, www.geodata.us, die SA Weerdiens en die Midrand Weerstasie. Vir die dae, waar in die datastel geen data gerapporteer was nie, is geringe aanpassings ge-maak.

Dit is onmoontlik om vir 18 jaar die daaglikse reënval in hierdie bydrae in te sluit. Maar goeie afleidings kan oor ons maandelikse en jaarlikse reënval met behulp van die grafiek en die tabel gemaak word. Die reënval syfers in die grafiek en tabel toon die seisoenale reënval patroon wat ons gedurende die afgelope 18 jaar ervaar het.

Die jaarlikse seisoenale gemiddelde reënval vir die Landgoed/ Irene omgewing is 662 mm oor 18 jare ( soos in die grafiek en die tabel aangedui word). Die maande met die hoogste reënval is Desember en Januarie.

In die tabel word ook drastiese reënval verskille vir November 1995/96 met 234 mm en 2002/03 met 26mm getoon. Verder is die jaarlikse gemiddelde reënval 474 mm in 2002/03 en 919 mm in 2004/05. Gedurende die 18 jare was daar 1549 reëndae(nie in tabel nie). In September, Okto-ber, November, Desember, Janu-arie, Februarie, Maart en April het dit onderskeidelik 53, 174, 250, 246, 292, 204, 196 en 134 dae gereën. Die aantal reëndae vir die betrokke maande toon ook ʼn re-delike ooreenstemming met hul jaarlikse gemiddelde reënval.

Daar is ook waargeneem, maar word nie in die tabel of grafiek getoon, dat die reënval vir Desember 2011 binne klein afstande drasties verskil. Irene weerstasie rapporteer vir 9, 14, 23 en 27 Desember onder-skeidelik 3.05, 24.38, 15.49 en 3.3 mm reën terwyl by die Midrand Landgoed vir dieselfde dae 19.3, 15.2, 40.9 en 28.4 mm reën gemeet is. Dus, as dit die dag by Irene min reën, beteken dit nie dat die Midrand Landgoed ook min reën kry. Vir hierdie seisoen was die gemiddelde reënval vir Irene en Midrand Landgoed onderskeidelik 475 mm en 567 mm. Maar die gemiddelde reënval oor 18 jaar bly vir Irene en die Midrand Landgoed feitlik dieselfde.

Die reën in ons Landgoed word hoofsaaklik van donderweer en donderstorms verkry wat verantwoordelik is vir ons lokale reënvalpatroon. Dit maak dit onmoontlik om net vir die Landgoed reën te voorspel. Die reënval datastel, wat in die grafiek en die tabel uiteengesit word, verteenwoordig die reënvalpatroon vir ons streek. Hierdie patroon wys nie droë of nat jare nie, maar net wat in ons Landgoed/Irene omgewing as normaal verwag kan word.

The first ever English Week was held at the College and the learners enjoyed a range of fun activities each day. A Spelling Bee was held and proved to be the highlight of the week. After an epic two-day battle between teachers and Grade 12 learners, Ms Chris-tine Almeida was crowned the Queen Bee. Learners discovered their own untapped talent by writing their own poems inspired by music and they had the opportunity to present “slam poetry‟ – a form of rap but without the music. Vocabularies were extended by playing word games and reading be-came fun on the coldest day of the week when the classes celebrated “Book, Blanket and Biscuit Day‟ and enjoyed eating and reading at the same time.

and expect an epic event! So You Think You Can Dance? Yes, we can! Midstream College has pro-ven that we can dance in this year’s first “So You Think You Can Dance” competition. The compe-tition began with two rounds after which the top

5 boys and top 5 girls pre-pared for the final event on 11 April 2012. And what an epic event it was! Witnessing the combination of styles and enthusiasm of the learners was an out-of-this-

Midstream is camp crazy

The Midstream Grade 8’s enjoyed their first camp at Hartbeeshoek af-ter which they felt ready to begin their high school careers. “1-2-3 Look at me!” These words were the trademark for the Grade 9 camp at Konka in the Magaliesberg. Their action-packed programme includ-ed zip-lining, canoeing, bridge-jumping into the river, an obstacle course, build-ing nests for eggs and bridge build-ing. Elandskloof Trout Farm was the destination for the Grade 10’s. This picturesque resort is situ-ated near Dullstroom between mountains and lovely trout dams. The activities included building shelters on the mountain, sleeping in these shelters, going on a 6km hike, show-ering under a waterfall and stalking a lantern. The Grade 11’s headed for Sabie in Mpumalanga for their adventure. They enjoyed all the activities that Induna Adventures offered which included zip-lining and river rafting down the majestic Sabie River. For their final high school camp the Grade 12’s went to Jubawe-ni outside of Nylstroom where they had a lot of fun in the blazing sun and water. The Matrics enjoyed co-ming up with a group identity and war cry and ensured that lasting memories were made.

Die skaak en gholf het die derby op ‘n hoë noot ingelui en reeds voor die derby-dag met hul teenstanders afgereken. Die rugby, hokkie en netbal was ‘n perd van ‘n ander kleur en al die spelers moes hard werk om Sutherland baas te raak. Die junior rugby- en hokkiespanne het met die louere weggestap; en by die netbal het die eerste en die ander senior spanne vir Sutherland gewys waar Dawid die wortels begrawe het.Die eerste rugbyspan het tydens die April-vakansie aan ‘n toernooi by Treverton deelgeneem en die o/16-span was na „n toernooi te Volksrust. Die o/14 en 0/15-spanne het hul spanvaardighede by ‘n oefenkamp te Konka gaan inoefen. Die eerste en o/16-dogtershokkiespanne het ‘n kursus in Kaapstad bygewoon, terwyl die o/14 en 15-spanne na Groblersdal was. Die eerste seunshokkiespan en die o/14-span het ook ‘n kursus in Kaapstad bygewoon om die seisoen op die regte voet af te skop. Die eerste netbalspan het in Mosselbaai hul spelpatrone gaan verfyn, terwyl al die ander A-spanne die PUK-afrigtingskursus bygewoon het.

As part of our ongoing pursuit of improving our services and overall customer experience, Smart Village is proud to announce that Midrand Estate’s internet backhaul infrastructure, which connects the development to the world, has now also been upgraded to a full �bre network.

In doing so, Midrand Estate has become one of the �rst estates in South Africa to be directly connected to global internet via �bre optic cables.

Up to now, a wireless microwave link had to be used for the backhaul of all data to and from the estate. While the link proved to be adequate, it became increasingly clear that due to the estate’s growing demand for more data and increased internet access speeds, a faster and more reliable backhaul solution was required.

As a result, the wireless link was substituted with extremely reliable, high capacity �bre-optic cables connected all the way to Teraco in Isando, Johannesburg.

The �bre optic cables were installed from Old Johannesburg Road down Brakfontein Road to Smart Village’s Operation Centre located in Midrand Estate.

The advantages of the upgrade to this �bre

backhaul solution include:

> The network can now deliver much higher bandwidth.

This will allow for greater internet connection speeds such as the introduction of 10, 20 and 30Mbps lines

> It has an extremely high capacity, as information travels as light waves along these cables > Fibre optic cables are not susceptible to interference from electrical wires or environmental in�uences such as lightning strikes > These cables are known for its excellent reliability and long life span

The increased bandwidth supply will now allow Smart Village to introduce and package new and exciting services.

For instance, as a Midrand Estate resident you could receive Internet, Telephone, IP television, Video-on-Demand or just about any other kind of digital media stream using a single Smart Village connection.

Such an arrangement would be more cost e�ective and simpler than receiving those services via di�erent mediums, as is the case today.

Midrand Estates have embraced the words of Prof Wan-gari Maathi, the founder of the Green Belt Movement and 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, “When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and seeds of hope.”

Naudé Klopper, a director of the Midstream HOA, ad-vised that anyone in the greater community can donate a tree, which will be planted in an area designated by the HOA.

Details of the donations are available at the local nur-sery, Gardening Concepts. Clearly advise the nursery staff towards which HOA the donation should be as-signed to.

It has come to light [pun well intended] that an irresponsible [or un-informed] resident recently pointed a laser at a helicopter used for a night patrol above Midfield. Under most conditions, laser light or other bright lights [spotlights, searchlights] directed at aircraft can be a haz-ard. It is quite possible that a bright light or laser can either distract or cause temporary blindness to a pilot during a critical phase of flight.

Laser users may be arrested for aiming at airplanes or helicopters. Pointing lasers or bright lights at an air-craft is a criminal offence. It is surpris-ingly easy to find the perpetrators and as authorities take laser incidents more seriously, they are putting more effort into finding them. A request to those involved to resist the temptation and thereby keep the helicopter on patrol and our residents safe.

1. Domestic and garden workers’ access to the Estate need to be authorized/approved by an Estate resi-dent. Thereafter it will be registered on the particular resident’s stand number to enable the worker to gain access to the Estate via the biometric scanning system.

2. Registrations will only be done on presentation of an original South Africa Identification Document [ID] and proof of identity.

3. Should a staff member only be in possession of a passport with a valid work permit, approval must also be obtained from the Estate Manager.

4. Day workers may only be registered on the days that they need to access the Estate. The resident takes responsibility for the days on which the day staff are registered. Day staff needs to be re-registered every six months [April and September]. The latter is of paramount importance since some residents neglect to deregister staff once their services have been terminated.

5. Live-in staff are given an ID card, which is presented to Security should they wish to access the Estate after hours.

6. Should a domestic/garden worker’s service be terminated, this needs to be confirmed with the regis-tration office immediately so that access can be cancelled.

The impeccable safety record of the HOA security teams has been slightly tarnished this year by a number of laptop thefts from vehicles in the general parking areas at the College and shopping centre. Whilst camera footage of

some of the incidents have been obtained it has been deceptively difficult to apprehend the perpetrators who mainly focus on vehicles where the car alarm is not set off when a back window is broken.

No incidents within any of the estates have been reported and resi-dents are requested to exercise caution by not leaving valuables in their vehicles in plain sight.

Going Green… the right way…

With the recent call for our country to become more energy efficient it is only natural that both residents and developers will be looking to install systems of heating and cooling that will be beneficial to the saving of power.

The Estate both encourages and supports such endeavors with sensitivity, however, method and position of application is important. In the case of solar panels, only the panel may be visible and must be installed flush with the roof structure. No external geysers, header tanks or pipe work may be visible and these must be installed in the ceiling space. No solar panels may be installed on elevated structures, therefore the roof design must allow for this from inception. Pool heating solar installations need to be neat and their pipe work run down to its closest eaves or through the ceiling void.

On the installation of other mechanical equipment such as heat pumps, air conditioning units, pool pumps, and other heating or cooling units, this includes conduits [painted the same colour as the applicable surface]. Residents need to ensure that these units are installed lower than 1800mm from the ground [standard boundary wall height] and where visible through an opening be pro-perly screened off in accordance with our Estate rules.

Let us all build a cleaner more efficient Estate, but also build an Estate we can all be visually proud of.
