Om 'n kind groot te maak.....

Daar steek beslis waarheid in die bekende Afrika-gesegde “Dit neem ‘n hele gemeenskap om ‘n kind groot te maak” of in Engels, “It takes a whole village to raise a child.”

Dit verg spanwerk van skole, kerke, ouers, onderwysers en leerders om saam te werk en ‘n netwerk te skep om die oënskynlik onoorbrugbare te oormeester.

Die digter, C.J. Langenhoven, staaf die bou van ‘n gesonde gemeenskap met die volgende: “Ek het baie paaie geloop op dié ou wêreld en ek weet van meer wat ander mense probeer het; maar op die ou end weet ek nié van ‘n ligter pad as die regte een nie.” Laat ons dus die regte pad volg. Dit help ons om ‘n gemeenskap te bou van hoop en gelykheid; een waar vrede, harmonie, vriendelikheid, gasvryheid, wedersydse respek en menswaardigheid seëvier.

Dit neem inderdaad ‘n hele gemeenskap om ‘n kind groot te maak!

In all sorts of ways the world recognises the game changers.

On the sport field the game changers are those that are swift at foot and make instantaneous decisions that change the course of the game. They are part of a team, but have the ability to change the game through personal brilliance. In literal terms the game changers can express themselves in a unique sequence, and often also in a limited number of words that makes so much sense.

Irrespective of the personal attributes, the game changers are seen to be those that change the course of events. Very much in line with the house- and home builders of the Midstream era. Where others saw grass and wilderness these game changers saw homes and a village with amenities. Where others had doubts, they had energy and hope.

And so this edition of the local newsletter tells us more about the game changers in our area and how in the course of the past 10 years, it all happened. If you are not mentioned here – send us a story or photograph as it is also your story as a game changer! Happy

A grader operator is a magician and a craftsman with the

numerous “joy sticks” of his large machine at the tip of his fingers. Imagine sitting 2.5m above ground level with someone running 15m in front of you with handsigns indicating adjustments required to the road layers you are busy constructing. Then take your hat of for the operator who will construct the road layers within a 20mm tolerance. In order

to appreciate some of the skills involved take for instance an ordinary three point turn with a grade. You have to lift the blade, turn the steering wheel, tilt the front wheels to the left to increase the turning circle, start to turn the blade in the opposite direction, stop, change gears to reverse, turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction, tilt

the front wheels in the opposite direction, still turn the blade, start to tilt the blade in the opposite direction, stop, tilt the front wheels back to the required angle, align the grader to the correct entry point, lower the blade to the exact level and construct the layer to the required tolerance. All this while deceleration and accelerating smoothly to make it look easy.

Kgwedi, die padskraper operateur wat betrokke was by die bou van paaie vir Bondev nog voordat Midstream die lig gesien het, baie van Midstream se paaie gebou het, onlangs betrokke was by die bou van Brakfonteinweg tien jaar gelede en steeds op nuwe paaie. Mpomiseng beteken “laat hy jou wys”. Dit het al male sonder tal gebeur dat Frans gevra is om vir iemand te wys hoe dit gedoen moet word, soms moes hy selfs die ontwerpingenieurs teregwys. Hy is getroud, met ‘n seun op universiteit en tweeling dogtertjies van drie jaar oud. Op die vraag “hoekom so ver uitmekaar?” is sy antwoord: “Jy weet mos soms trap die lewe ‘n mens en dan wil jy nie te veel kinders hê nie, en toe ek besluit dit is nou weer tyd toe gee die Liewe Vader vir my twee dogterjies gelyk omdat ek solank gewag het”.

Jakes ken Midstream Estate se siviele ingenieursdienste soos die palm van sy hand. Sedert die eerste sooi gespit is met die bou van Brakfonteinweg, was hy betrokke by vele van die dorp se projekte, en is hy nou weer besig met die nuwe astro hokkieveld by Midstream College. Hy het hom bewys as ‘n bekwame konstruksieterreinagent en weet waar meeste van Midstream se dorpe se dienste ondergronds loop, want dit is met sy eie hande

en insette geïnstalleer.

Een van Jakes se minder aantreklike rekords is dat hy in die laat 1990’s tydens konstruksiewerk aan die Oosrand 31 keer gekaap is en ‘n paar keer geskiet is. Desnieteenstaande is hy ‘n konstruksieman deur-en-deur en staan hy in die slote saam met sy werkers om die dienste geïnstalleer te kry in die skepping van erwe vir die huise wat volg.

Kanniedood Jakes het ‘n passie vir konstruksie en duidelik

‘n groot voorliefde vir die konstruksiewerk verwant aan siviele ingenieurswese. Hy geniet die werk en die rol wat hy speel in die ontwikkeling van Midstream terdeë en is meeste oggende teen sesuur aan die werk. Wanneer ‘n projek aan Jakes oorgegee word, kan ‘n mens maar weet dis in goeie hande.

Cendev Projects CC is in 1998 gestig deur Johan Saayman.

Sy pas-afgetrede skoonpa, met meer as 48 jaar se ondervinding in die boubedryf, het grootliks bygedra tot die vestiging van die uitmuntende kwaliteit vakmanskap wat steeds in Cendev se projekte merkbaar is. Die eerste bouprojek is gedurende 1998 in Eldopark voltooi, wat gelei het tot vele ander in Eldoglen en later in Midrand Estates.

Johan onthou nog goed hoe hy by die ellelange tou hoopvolles moes inval met die verkoop van die eerste fase (en in sy

dubbelkajuit moes oornag om sy plek te verseker). Ses eenhede is op erf 53 gebou, waarvan Mnr. Henry Stolz die eerste intrekker was.

Terselfdertyd is ‘n residensiële woning van ongeveer 290m² gebou; en werkers moes self aangery word, omdat daar nog nie busroetes na die dorp was nie.

Sedertdien het Cendev nog in elke fase van die ontwikkeling huise gebou vir nuwe-, sowel as bestaande kliënte. Tydens die resessie het Cendev die wa deur die drif getrek met jong, dinamiese leierskap, deursettingsvermoë en spanne met ‘n wil om te werk. Hul uitmuntende reputasie het hul vooruit geloop en tot dusver het Cendev ‘n totaal van 326

huise gebou - met ‘n verdere 45 tans in aanbou. Dit sluit ook 145 deeltitel eenhede in wat ‘n trotse Cendev span by Retire@Midstream gebou het.

hul vyftiende bestaansjaar gevier en het intussen ook die kommersiële mark betree (waarvan Midrand Estates Park die eerste baie suksesvolle projek was). Johan het die maatskappy hierdie jaar aan sy seun, Pieter en vennoot Thinus du Toit verkoop.

Cendev Projects is trots in hul bydrae om te bou in en om die gemeenskap.

Pieter Smuts van Midlands het sy dankbaarheid teenoor die paramedici van Midstream Estates in ‘n brief aan ons gestuur:

“Ek het Sondagaand, 28 April 2013, ‘n hartaanval by my huis in Midlands gehad. Dit was ‘n skrikwekkende ervaring en ek dink nie enige mens is werklik voorbereid vir so iets nie. Die twyfel oor die korrekte optrede kan net meer spanning tot die situasie bydra. My vrou en seun was gelukkig ook tuis en het die teenwoordigheid van gees gehad om die paramedikus se nommer in die MIDSTREAM NEWS te skakel. Dit was beslis die beste belsuit in hierdie omstandighede!!

Reinhardt was binne minute in my huis en het dadelik met behandeling begin. Hy was deurentyd baie kalm en professioneel, wat baie gehelp het om ons ook kalm te hou in die omstandighede.

Hy het my gestabiliseer en toe al die reëlings getref vir die ambulans. Sy optrede het ‘n uiters moeilike situasie heelwat makilker gemaak. Ons is jou ewig dankbaar, Reinhardt!!!

Ek is na 2 dae in die intensiewe eenheid en 2 stente later weer op die been. Wat ‘n voorreg om in ‘n landgoed te bly met ‘n mediese sentrum en professionele paramedici net om die hoek! Baie Dankie.”

Nine players from the Tennis@Midstream club participated in the Gauteng North Seniors Tournament that was played from the 13th to the 17th of June. Six of the nine players made it to the semi-finals in their respective age groups.

Marie-Louise Kleynhans was runner-up in the singles event and winner in the doubles along with her partner Annerie Wessels. Severus Smuts made the finals in the men’s doubles and won the mixed doubles event with his partner Helen Moywatt. The winner of the men’s doubles event was Gustav Putter, with Charlene Klopper being runner-up in both the ladies doubles and mixed events.

John Harding partook in the semi-finals in the doubles event, while Jean Varges competed in the mixed tennis semi-finals. Second in the men’s doubles were Roelf van der Laan and Severus Smuts.Congratulations to Tennis@Midstream - going from strength to strength.

Brandon Correia, a Grade 10 learner at Midstream College and member of the Patrick O’Brien Golf Academy, recently participated in the Glacier Junior Series golf competition at Zwartkops Country Club. This was Brandon’s third competition in this series and he has made Midstream proud by winning the B division ‘best net score’ of 68 playing off a handicap of 16 (gross score of 82).

Brandon moved to Midstream 18 months ago having moved here from Tanzania where he had had

some exposure to golf. It was after joining the school team, and with the extra help and thorough hands-on coaching by his coach Patrick O’Brien, that he made real progress. In under a year he has dropped his handicap from a 28 down to his current 15.

Brandon is a dedicated golfer who tries to get practices in at least 4 times a week and can often be seen at the Midstream driving range and putting green working

on his golf skills. He aims to continue to decrease his handicap to single digits by 2014 and to be a scratch golfer by 2015. He is committed to entering as many competitions as possible and to continue learning more and more about the game.

Good day to you all, I pray and trust that you are well! It is hard to

think that we are already in the second half of the year! In the last issue, I spoke about Getting a Grip on Fatigue, and this time, we will look at Getting a Grip on Fear.

I am yet to meet someone who can say that they truly and honestly fear nothing! We all have fears in our lives, and these fears may affect the quality of our lives. We live in a country dominated by fear. Elaborate security systems, high walls, vicious dogs and Security Guards guard our homes, offices and cars.

But, it is the vast array of personal fears deep within us that create the greatest conflict and generate our ever increasing levels of anxiety. Some fears are basic – the fear of death, illness, rejection, failure and old age. There may be only occasional bouts with these kinds of fears, or they can become quite obsessive.

Certain fears can even be healthy. It is quite normal to be wary of poisonous snakes, drunk drivers, or walking alone in the bush knowing that the big five might be lurking!! Others may be phobias that you have accumulated – fear of heights, fear of flying, fear of open places, fear of strangers, fear of speaking in public. Phobias may

become so overwhelmingly strong in our lives that we are virtually imprisoned by them to the extent that they affect the quality of our lives. Take a moment and write down the fears that grip you! Those that impact on the quality of your life.

The gospel is good news for any form of fear. Jesus came not only to save us from our sins and give us eternal life, He also came to give us abundant life. You can be set free from even your worst fears. Even the most irrational kind.

Getting a grip on our fears

Admit your fears. The simplest yet often most difficult step in overcoming our fears, is just to admit them. Many of the greatest men and women of the Bible were gripped by various sorts of fears and did not hide them from God. God has both the grace and power to do something about our fears. Telling God about them and asking for strength to do something about them is very important.

Take responsibility for your own thought life. Read 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. Fears can potentially become spiritual strongholds through which we can be kept in bondage. Fortresses of fear are often established in the mind and so we need to take responsibility

for what we allow our thoughts to dwell on. Take every thought captive and take it to God and make it obedient to Christ.

Remind yourself of who you are in Christ. The Bible tells us that we are God’s precious children, and that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are deeply and extravagantly loved by God. With God we are never alone. Holding on to this knowledge will allow us to gain new perspective on some of our other fears. Many of our fears are derived from poor self-esteem.

Gain the right focus. This follows on from some of the other suggestions, but it is important to remember that the key to dealing with our fears is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus.

I trust that you find some wisdom in these thoughts and that you will become more able to deal with fear in your life. Take the time to speak to someone if you have concerns about your fears.

Byna ‘n dekade gelede het die bouplanne van Midstream Pre-Primêr uitgesprei op die tafel gelê. Mariaan Bester en Lenie Botha, welbekende direkteure van die plaaslike pri-primêre skole, het met ons gesels

oor hul ondervindings sedert die ontstaan van die skole.

Hulle vertel met trots dat die skool in 2005 met 95 kleuters begin het. In 2006 was daar 260 jongelinge wat op die speelgronde rondgehardloop het; en in 2007 moes hulle die werkerskwartiere omskep in nog ‘n klas. Die kleuterskool was stampvol, met 340 kleuters wat soggens vol lag en opgewondenheid skool toe gekom het.

Die eerste Oupa en Ouma Dag bring ‘n glimlag op die mond. “Ons kon daardie jaar nog ‘n klein konsert hou vir die Oupa sen Oumas. Baie het verander in die afgelope jaar: die getal kleuters-, onderwysers- en die uitdagings. En ons bou steeds daagliks aan die ontwikkellingsboustene van ons toekomstige skrywers, wetenskaplikes, dokters en ingenieurs.”

Midstream Pre-Primêr is ook baie trots daarop dat UNISA foto’s van die skool kom neem het om by die universiteit se leermateriaal vir toekomstige onderwysers in te sluit. Net nog ‘n bevestiging dat die kleuterskole op die landgoed van top gehalte is.

A lens is the most important item of a photographer’s equipment. It is better to spend less on the camera than scale down on lenses.


A good quality lens enhances image quality with sharpness over the entire image, right into the

corners of the photo at all f-stops. It also limits light reflections when shooting into light. In addition, if cared for properly, a lens will last for many years. On the negative side, a lens is an additional piece of equipment, adding to weight. Therefore, it is better to buy one or two good quality lenses than 3, 4 or 5 lenses of lesser quality. Every time a lens is changed there is the risk of getting dust particles on the camera’s sensor. These dust particles cause dots on the photo, particularly in the sky area where they are easily visible. A smaller number of lenses makes for less changing of lenses and therefore less dust on the sensor.

What does one need? Basically, one needs a lens for general use, followed by a lens or lenses that suit one’s specific interests. There are three main streams of interest: a powerful telephoto lens for wildlife, a macro-lens for small things and a wide angle lens for landscape photography.

For general use a lens covering a range from 28mm (wide angle) to 300mm (telephoto) is highly recommended. On full frame cameras (where the sensor is the size of the old colour slide) it will be a 28-300mm VR/IS/OS lens (which cancels out hand movement of the camera). However, on “half frame” cameras (like most DSLR cameras in use) it will be a 18-200mm lens. These “half frame” cameras with a sensor half the size of an old colour slide, magnify the image by 50%, transforming the lens into a 28-300mm lens.

Of the three “specialized” lenses, the 100mm or 105mm macro-lens is the most useful. It is a high quality lens which can be used for macro-work, portraits and even landscapes, and is reasonably priced. Sigma makes a very good one. The closer you get to the object, the more is magnifies.

A telephoto lens is a 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and

600mm lens, large and heavy, as

well as pricey. They have high quality glass, and the most popular one is probably the 500mm f4 lens. These lenses are able to blur

the background because of a

very shallow depth of field,

letting the primary

object stand out much better. For a “half frame” camera the 300mm f2.8 lens is also most useful as it will effectively function as a 450mm f2.8 lens.

Wide angle lenses are of limited use. The 28mm end (or 17 or 18mm for a “half frame” camera) of the lens for general use is quite a useful lens. A wide angle lens has an enormous depth of field, making everything sharp from close up to the horizon. This gives great depth of field which impresses in landscapephotography. There are wider lenses (10, 20, 24mm) with a greater depth of field, but they are recommended for the enthusiast in landscape photography.

Before buying a lens, make a thorough study of the different possibilities. Do not easily accept the advice of sales persons. Their motives are different.

Nothing in photography gives more pleasure and satisfaction than the clear, sharp picture of a good quality lens. It’s worth the investment.

A term used when referring to lenses which needs explanation is a “prime” lens. This is a lens of high quality glass and a very low f-stop (2.8 or less). They are specialized lenses for specific purposes. A classic example is a 50 or 85mm f1.4 lens for portrait photography. However, a f2.8 macro-lens and even the super telephoto lenses are also prime lenses, even though their minimum f-stop may be higher than f2.8.

“South Africa produces around 45% of all Africa’s electricity and as electricity fuels progress we can be proud of this. However, there are drawbacks. As 90% of our electricity is still coal generated we have sadly become a major atmospheric polluter per person/capita. We expel around 200 megatons of carbon dioxide each year – ranking us as a high emitter globally.

The main peak usually occurs at about 06:00 in the mornings and lasts until about midday. A second peak period is normally from about 17:00 until 21:00. At these peak times the grid is put under severe strain. This is when the importance of the 49M initiative is evident. When the whole country works together, everyone wins.”

I n s u l a t i o n makes your house up to 5°C warmer in winter. Without roof insulation

you lose about 40% of the heat your heaters are generating.

Hot plates retain heat, so turn off the stove before you’ve finished cooking. It won’t affect your food, only your electricity bill.

A kettle uses the same amount of energy to boil 1 litre of water as a fridge uses

in 7 hours! Only boil the water you need at that moment.

Energy efficient lighting options are readily available. LED and CFL light bulbs consume much less electricity and lasts 6-8 times longer than conventional

incandescent light bulbs.

Check the seal of your fridge. A damaged seal can make your fridge consume more electricity due to the cold air escaping.

For every hour you use your tumble dryer, you could have cooked 48 meals in your microwave – more than a month’s

worth of dinners.

Those of you who have taken an interest in the rehabilitation and restoration of the habitat

for the Grass Owls at the Midstream Grass Owl Preserve will have noticed some meaningful progress in recent months Whilst, on a limited budget, we still have a long way to go, we are pleased with the progress to date and the positive feedback from a good friend of our Preserve, the well- known environmentalist and birding expert, Geoff Lockwood of the Delta Environmental Centre in Johannesburg.

Geoff paid the Grass Owl Preserve a visit on 4 June to check on the progress with the rehabilitation programme for the area, and to advise us on further steps to

be taken in the process. He was accompanied on this visit by Fred Williams, Manager of Midstream Estate and resident Con Fauconnier, Chairperson of the Owl Preserve Committee. No Grass Owls were seen during this particular visit but a Marsh Owl [Vlei-uil] decided to take to the air and did several fly-pasts in order to do an inspection of his own of the three strange characters on the ground who were disturbing his afternoon sleep. Con managed to get a few photos of this magnificent bird and one can see and appreciate why it is important for us to maintain this protected area in our estate. We want to thank Geoff for his valuable contribution which is entirely voluntary and extremely valuable given his in-depth expertise in this field. We also again want to encourage residents who are interested and may wish to contribute to this preservation effort, either financially or in terms of time and expertise, to contact Fred Williams at the Midstream HOA.

Die hoogte is 32 - 36 cm en die gewig is 60 - 90 gram.

Die voël is ‘n algemene standvoël in die woude, boswêreld en boomryke voorstedelike tuine van die grootste gedeelte van Sub-Sahara-Afrika.

Hulle leef in groepe van tot omtrent ‘n dosyn voëls met net een broeipaar. Die wyfie lê 2-5 blou eiers in die gat van ‘n boom of ou houtkapper-nes en kan eiers

lê gedurende enige tyd van die jaar. Die wyfie broei alleen op die eiers en dit broei uit na ongeveer 17-18 dae. Nadat die kuikens uitgebroei het, word die

wyfie en kuikens deur die res van die groep gevoed, selfs nadat hulle volgroeid is en die nes verlaat het. Na 3 tot 4 weke verlaat die jong voëls die nes, maar hulle is eers ten volle onafhanklik na 2 tot 3 maande. Die groep is vreesloos in die verdediging van die kuikens teen indringers.

Die Rooibekkakelaar word ook in Mid-

stream en omgewing gesien. Hulle is metaal-

donkergroen, met ‘n pers rug en ‘n baie lang diamantvormige pers stert. Hulle het kenmerkende wit merke op die vlerke en die wit chevrons op die stertpunte maak

hulle maklik identifiseerbaar. So ook sy lang dun geboë snawel. Hierdie spesie se geslagte is soortgelyk, maar jong voëls het ‘n swart snawel. Die mannetjie se snawel is effens langer en meer geboë.

ONCE A FARM NOW A TOWNKort na die Y2K-gogga en die voltooing van die Eldopark en Eldoglen dorpe is die manne van

Bondev voorgestel aan die plaasgedeelte waarop die Midstream dorpe sou ontwikkel.

Oor ‘n periode van enkele maande is die aanvanklike studies voltooi en besluit die Bondev direkteure - Chris Smith, Jan Zeederberg, Johan van Wyk en Riaan Botma (sien foto hieronder) in 2001 om voort te gaan met die transaksie.

Na die suksesvolle afhandeling van die eerste omgewingstudie en dorpstigting aansoeke begin konstruksie vroeg in 2003 en word die eerste dorp geproklameer in die middel van Julie 2003. En sederdien word daar die afgelope 10 jaar stuk-vir-stuk gebou aan die droom van ‘n dorp tussen die stede.

Much debate surrounds the Voetstoots clause. Can a purchaser rely on it? Can a seller always hide behind it?

In the recent case of Banda and Another v Van der Spuy and Another (781//2011) [2013] ZASCA 23; 2013 (4) SA 77 (SCA) (22 March 2013) the Supreme Court of Appeal dealt with this hairy issue:

A thatch roof that leaked prior to the sale of a house and which continued to leak after the sale, gave rise to a dispute between the parties.

The leaks were as a result of:

• The wooden poles of the roof could not support the weight of the thatch roof and openings appeared between the flashing and the thatch;

• The pitch of the roof was 30 degrees instead of the recommended 45 degrees.

The roof structure was therefore structurally unsound and the purchasers brought an action against the sellers for reducing the purchase price (actio quanti minoris). As the contract contained a voetstoots clause they had the burden to proof:

• the existence of the latent defect in the roof and

• that the sellers were aware of the defect and had neglected to inform them of its existence.

The Court found that as certain repairs were made to the roof prior to the sale, it was clear that the sellers did not possess an honest beliefe in the adequacy of the repairs, especially in the light of the fact that there was an absence of a guarantee for the repairs that were done. They were therefore obliged to disclose this knowledge to the purchasers. The purchase price was therefore reduced.

Madiba-day proved to be a special day for 67 disadvantaged children when bus-nesses in Midstream became part of a greater team to bring medical care to the children. The events on the day was arranged by Cure Day Clinics and took place at the Midstream Cure Day Clinic as well as at the

other three Cure Day Clinics. Dental and Ear, Nose and Throat procedures were performed on the 67 children in the day hospitals to support the “67 minutes for Mandela” initiative.

Doctors, staff and companies provided their time, expertise and products, whilst Cure Day Clinics provided their operating theatres and anaesthetics free of charge; and other businesses provided medicine as well as food and treats to the children.

Recognition and thanks go out to all the Midstream Cure Day Clinic staff and the doctors who operated at no charge on the 25 children on the day, being Drs. Bethune-Williams, Swanepoel, Roux, Pinheiro, Rich-ter and Pienaar.

Local businesses that also contributed to this very worthwhile charity event were Midstream Pharmacy (located in the Retire@Midstream main building), Midstream SUPER-

Tydens die graad 6 en 7-uitdunne, moes die sprekers ook vir die eerste keer onvoorbereide toesprake lewer. Onderwerpe het gewissel van “Het laerskoolkinders nog agt ure slaap nodig?”, “Speel vriende ’n groter rol in tieners se lewens as hul ouers / gesinne?” en “Behoort daar nog ouderdomsbeperkings te wees op tienerflieks?” om net ’n paar te noem.Vyf leerlinge per afdeling het na die eerste ronde van die ATKV-kompetisie by Menlopark deurgedring. Die graad 2 tot 3-groep sluit in; Adriaan van Heerden, Lu-Mae Schoeman, Miné Potgieter, Rowan Lindeque en Nicolaas Rhoodie. Die graad 4

tot 5-groep sluit in; Lené Koch, Anri Moolman, Dihan de Bod, Luan Bierman en Dietrich von Benecke. Die graad 6 tot 7-groep sluit in; Tiané de Bod, Corine Wildenboer, Nakita Oberholzer, Jordan Fitzjohn en Tischa de Coning. Tiané de Bod en Corine Wildenboer (gr. 7) het na die halfeindronde deurgedring, wat bestaan uit die twintig sterkste deelnemers per afdeling in die Noord-Gauteng streek. Tydens die halfeindronde het die deelnemers se voorbereide toesprake slegs 25% van hul

totale punte uitgemaak, terwyl hul onvoorbereide toesprake 75% getel het. Baie geluk aan hierdie leerlinge.

amazing talent and potential of a learner. Connor Porter (gr. 4), Afrikaans Additional Language, wrote the poem, Rugby, opting for the promising possibility of a career in writing.


CRAZY SOCKS VIR PRINSHOF SKOOL VIR DOWESMidstream College Primêre Skool is deel van verskeie “Wees goed, doen goed”-projekte en die Crazy Socks Day op 31 Mei 2013 was geen uitsondering nie. Op hierdie dag was die skoolgronde versier met reënboogkleurige kouse. ’n Skooluniform het nog nooit so fraai gelyk nie en daar was selfs ’n paar kouse wat met battery-gedrewe fairy lights vermaak het. ’n Vrywillige donasie van R5 vir dié prettigheid het ’n totale bedrag van R 5 430.70 vir Prinshof Skool vir Dowes ingesamel. Dankie Midstream College Primêre Skool vir nóg ’n bydrae tot die “Wees goed, doen goed”-projekte.

Here in Midrand Estates, we are in a fortunate position to have a total of 304 guards who report for duty on a daily basis. These guard-ian angels work long shifts to ensure that our families are safe, that our kids can cross the road safely, to ensure the controlled entry of visitors and that residents adhere to the estate rules. On 10 June 2013, the Midstream College Primary Voortrekkers decided to show the estates’ guards exactly just how much

their dedication is appreciated by providing each one with a bowl of soup on this icy-cold evening. Approximately 30 moms joined in the challenge and worked together to produce 150 liters of soup. The Voortrekker moms and dads first gathered to enjoy a cup of soup to commemorate the

receipt of each Voortrekker’s specialization badge, making the evening an extremely special occasion. However, the highlight of the evening was the delight and joy on every

guard-ian’s face as they accepted the bowl of soup. Thank you to everyone who was involved. I wonder what is on the summer menu?

MIDSTREAM’S GUARD-IAN ANGELS

MIDSTREAM AGAINST RHINO POACHINGMs. South Africa 2012, Marilyn Ramos, visited Midstream College Primary School to promote the safe passage of Roccy. Roccy was born in the South African bush veld and he seemed to have more energy in his tiny round body than a whole herd of elephants. Roccy was a happy little rhino, until poachers killed his mother and left him to face the wilderness on his own. Today, Roccy

lives at the Elandela Private Reserve with his new human parents and other rhino siblings. Ramos together with Pick n Pay and Elandela Private Reserve fight against rhino poaching to prevent other rhinos from becoming orphans. A booklet with Roccy’s story as well as a pledge form were distributed to Midstream College Primary School learners, encouraging saving animals and looking after

the environment. Midstream College Primary School will continue to embrace and acknowledge these projects.

If anyone has been wondering what the two huge cranes towering above the landscape on Midstream Hill were being used for, wonder no more. Construction of the Mediclinic Hospital is well under way and the whole of Midrand-Estates can start looking forward to having the flagship hospital of the Mediclinic group on our doorstep in the not-so-distant future. This brings another thought to mind!

meisie) en James Munnik (senior-seun en algehele wenner in die seunsafdeling). New Balance, SASOL Midstream, Midstream SPAR, Barber SA, Gardening Concepts, Amourique Jewellers, Chatz Data, Dr Kruger, Joint Ventures Ltd, Classic Cleaners het die dag met verskeie pryse geborg.

Zani en Lee Barnard van Midstream College en die Boland se Minette van Vreden het vir die Junior Wêreldtoernooi (o/14) gekwalifiseer. Dié toernooi vind van 5 tot 10 Augustus in die Tsjeggiese Republiek plaas.

On Friday, 24 May, Midstream College had another first. 60 mountain bikers grabbed their helmets and cleats to participate in the first ever Midstream College inter-house mountain bike race. The route laid out on the College grounds had the learners navigate technical rock gardens, narrow trees, speedy open sections and a few steep drop-offs.

Syferkoppe presteer op alle vlakkeDie wiskunde-leerders van Midstream College het aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Wiskundestigting en die Universiteit van Pretoria se Wiskunde Ervaringsdag deelgeneem. In hierdie olimpiade het Duncan Matthys (graad 9) ‘n tweede plek

behaal.In die eerste ronde van die landswye wiskunde-olimpiade het 113 leerders van die College na die tweede ronde deurgedring. In die eerste been van hierdie jaar se Tour de Maths het Lucien Magliolo en Markus van der Westhuizen ‘n tweede plek behaal.

Uitreik word ‘n tradisie onder leerders Vanjaar se Uitreikkomitee, onder voorsitterskap van Thabiso Ramalome, het vanjaar talle projekte om minderbevoorregte mense te help, gereël.Gedurende die eerste kwartaal is skryfbehoeftes en mieliemeel ingesamel. Die mieliemeel is aan die Gomotsegang Jeug- en Ontwikkelingsentrum geskenk. Die Winter Warmer-projek, ‘n jaarlikse uitreikgeleentheid, het hierdie jaar 1313 komberse opgelewer. Die komberse is ook aan die Gomotsegang Jeug- en Ontwikkelingsentrum geskenk.

Midstream beats the coldThe first ever Polar Bear Swim took place in the Midstream swimming pool at 06:00 on the day of the winter solstice. No less than 83 adventurous Midstream souls completed the frigid gauntlet. In addition were six staff members and one parent who also took on the 100m challenge. Each swimmer will receive a certificate marking their achievement of successfully completing 100m in the school swimming pool with a water temperature of 10 degrees Celsius and an

ambient temperature of 8 degrees Celsius. This is the start of what is bound to become a Midstream tradition where your name is added to the exclusive fellows of the Polar Bear Club.

Set works and language lessons forgotten for a week For one week, English at school was not about set works, plays or language lessons. Learners were given a chance to see more and enjoy light-hearted English lessons in a unique way. The week included a poetry competition and in-class activities such as fun-etics.The Spelling Bee proved to be a highlight yet again and the audience was entertained by the staff and grade 12 learners who tested their spelling knowledge against one other. Noni Silomo won the grade 12 section and Mr De Lange, a Maths Literacy teacher, won the teacher’s section.


Spring is nearly in the air and many residents are anxiously

awaiting the new season to further beautify their gardens. However, with ongoing construction activity, residents run the risk of their lush lawns being damaged by building contractors.

This has led to some residents placing rocks, stones, bricks and/or other cement objects on the sidewalks/paving in front of their stands. The above-mentioned objects obstruct traffic and, as such, placing these constitutes a contravention of Section 319 of the National Road

Traffic Act of 1996, which states: “No person shall wilfully or unnecessarily prevent, hinder or interrupt free and proper passage of traffic”.

The Home Owners Associations has been experiencing an increase in the number of complaints received about this practice, which is also aesthetically undesirable. However, to accommodate residents who would like to protect their property from construction vehicle damage, cement balls have been approved as the accepted method of sidewalk / pavement protection.

David Sethoga was nominated as the Midstream Officer of the month by his Shift Leader Nelson Nkabani and colleagues. David has been with Midstream for the past 5 years and has never been absent from work.

He is well-known and admired amongst his colleagues and they experience him as reliable, responsible, friendly and hard working.

His colleagues also say that he is always punctual and sets a great example to all in the work place.
