The rhetorical question whether perpetual improve-ment is possible deserves consideration, even if it may never be answered.

Residents in Midrand Estates were fortunate enough to witness and be part of another spectacular year. As the year draws to its close we once again find ourselves reminding each other of just how quickly the year has passed...

In this year the newsletter team had a blast and found that, with the increase in news, the number of pages in the newsletter had to be increased. Once that had been done it was found that many pictures were still left on the shelf and thus the eNews Mid-rand Estates Newsletter was born where life in Mid-rand Estates is depicted in an electronic, picture-only format.

Can we improve further? Only time will tell, but we undertake to continue bringing local news to you in a fun filled way that will concentrate on the positive side of life! Enjoy the holiday! Maybe it came so much sooner this year because you deserve it more!

Until next year.

A spectacular year draws

to a close!

The concept of a time capsule is to identify worth-while items and memories from a given year or

a time span and then preserve those items for a future generation to uncover and, hopefully, marvel at the gems that have been saved.

Join in the search on what should be saved from the past year. What happened this year that has not happened before? What event was life chang-ing and will be worth remembering for many years to come? We could also dwell on who will open the precious parcel in a 100 or 200 years and what will their mindset be, but that is a totally different topic...

For Midrand Estates the biggest – and almost for-gotten – news event of the year was the open-ing of the second access road to the area on 20 March 2012. The new road heralded a new spirit of growth into the community who were tormented by the delays that were experienced during the con-struction period with many waiting 30 minutes and more to leave the estate. Truly a great day which was widely reported in the estate newsletters with a summary of the construction work leading up to the opening day given in the electronic newsletter that was also introduced during March this year. The “Stream of Lights” as a modern day LED-lit work of art was installed at the traffic lights inter-section to the greater area. The project conjured up mixed emotions with many seeing it as vibrant

and uplifting whilst others saw it as “Las Vegas” style that is not in line with a ru-ral community. Many things unique and memorable about the roads which mean the opening of the road-project deserve a place in the 2012 time capsule.

Midstream College and all the associated schools remained a central part of the community with the primary school re-porting that it now has more than 1100 pupils at school and, for the first time, a Grade 1 intake will graduate from Grade 7.

Midstream College has become a well known school in a short period of time and the pupils are excelling on many fronts – and in general they are known to have

Putting the year 2012 into a time capsule

Page 7: Midrand Estates News

The Midrand Estates Newsletter - December 2012 7

fun while receiving quality education from some of the best teachers in the business. A part of the exuberance of the pupils at the school of excel-lence, Midstream College, must find its way into the 2012 time capsule.

But overall it has been a year of growth in all the estates with the total number of families now call-ing Midrand Estates “home” exceeding 3000. The undeveloped sites received houses at an astound-ing rate with new estates in the surrounds either

being investigated or being developed. And during the year the Midstream HOA brought a sparkling, new face to Brakfontein Road by developing the traffic circles. A few drops from the new water fountains for the time capsule to remind all of the new and constantly changing face of the estates within a secure environment.

And so we look a bit beyond the local boundaries and consider what else happened in 2012 and the thoughts wander to other one-of-a-kind happen-ings - Apple without Steve Jobs, Chad le Clos, the Olympics, the EU and Greece, is the Rand-Dollar stronger or weaker, Marikana, Province winning against the odds just after Sandy battered the USA and so forth – it was truly a year to remem-ber.

Tennis@MidstreamWe are very proud of John Harding, a member of the Midstream Tennis Club,

who recently won the singles event in his age group at the Gauteng North Veterans Closed Championship. This Championship is played on an annual basis at the Gauteng North tennis courts at Groenkloof. It stretches over a period of four weekends where the best players compete to improve their ranking position in the province.

Tennis@Midstream will be hosting its own Club Championships played every Saturday from 26 January to the 2nd of March 2013. Singles, mixed doubles and doubles matches will be played. Any club members interested are invited to enter before 10 January 2013.

For the kids from Cromwell Street at Hutton Gate, a “trick or treat” evening requires a lot of planning.

Notices were sent out in advance requesting residents to stock up on treats. Outfits were planned and then, out they went on the road! Most of the residents in Cromwell street participated actively by handing out goodies and treats when the kids came knocking. Ev-eryone had a great time, especially the kids!

RunWalkforLife@Midstream is growing strong! We did our first run as a branch on Saturday, 10 No-

vember when we participated in the Liqui Fruit Irene race. Three of our members did the 10km race (two

members, Ingrid Terlouw and Marie Loock, completed their first 10km ever after having only started with the program in September!). We also had six participants in the 5km.

Midrand Estates gives back to a much-in-need community.

A message of hope and inspiration from Wendy:

“I have the pleasure of being involved in a wonderful project in Soshanguve: Khothatsong where an HIV/Aids Foster Care House has just been opened. It was called upon me and some of the youth from my church to assist with the project by creating a vegetable garden to make the house self sustainable. Gardening Concepts supplied the plants and trees and in heavy rain drove all the way to Soshanguve to drop them off.

Further plans to lighten the festive season are to provide clothes for the Christmas church service and to start off the New Year; by handing out toys and sweet packs which will hopefully bring joy to their hearts and faces. Once again local businesses provided support with cash donations and SPAR in collaboration with Cadbury donated sweets and toys.

Every bit of assistance means there is hope for a more prosperous life for the communities in need. Thanks to those that made this small start a reality?”

Community News in Full Colour

Community news in full colour – the language/s we use in the local newsletter.

The newsletter embraces the principle of “unity through diversity”, which binds us as South Africans together.

The principles are applied in the language used for articles in the newsletter, apply to the following: All articles relating to the Home Owners Associations, new developments, roads, general news

written by the newsletter team and general info concerning residents, are published in English to make the information available (and understandable) to everyone.

Articles from the local schools reflect the parallel medium character of the College. Remaining articles are placed in the language in which it is received from contributors.

GAUTRAIN BUS SERVICEA survey completed during December 2011, revealed general interest in the introduction of a Gautrain bus service. A formal application to Khuthele Projects, the consultants who evaluate the need for Gautrain busses, was submitted on 30 January 2012. Regular contact has been maintained with Khuthele Projects, and the latest information indicates that the first phase of the implementation of Gautrain busses has been completed.

Indications are that the second phase, which will hopefully cover the Midrand Estates application, will be evaluated during 2013.

Residents will be kept informed with regard to progress and feedback on Gautrain’s decision.

LOCAL IS LEKKER...

It is official - the local SUPERSPAR is a friendly and hygienic SPAR.

The local SPAR opened its doors in April 2008 and brought convenient shopping to residents of Midrand Estates. Over time the SPAR has become part of the local households by providing much more than just groceries.

Dries Fourie has been the store manager at the Midstream SUPERSPAR since September 2009 and is prepared to go the extra mile for his customers. To the delight of his patrons he recently introduced freshly made sushi as well as fruit snack packs.

Dries is particularly proud of the award the store recently won when it was announced that amongst the 868 SPAR stores throughout South Africa it had been awarded a top 10 position for hygiene. The audit, run by an external party, visits the stores unannounced on a quarterly basis and inspects all the departments, which include fruit and veg, bakery, fresh home meal replacements, butchery, general sales and the cashier points.

It is good to know that your local SPAR is a friendly Spar and tops in hygiene. And it is near you..!

I once read an article on “If I were young

again”

I guess we have all at one time or another thought how different our lives could have been. We think how we would have made such wise choices, def-initely turned left in-stead of right, pursued

that career path more passionately, not given up so easily, written that book... oh sorry, that’s one of my missed opportunities! Maybe I will still get there....

One of the truly great leaders of our land was speaking on a very similar theme at his retirement celebration – it was a celebration; he had lived well. He put forward the following:

We should choose a positive attitude towards Life. Note, a choice. There is much in life we can’t choose. There are many things I can’t choose. Abuse at home or somewhere else. Poverty, intel-ligence or lack thereof, a sense of security growing up, whether my parents divorced, losing a brother or sister... so many more, all beyond choice.

But my attitude towards these things... resent-ment, anger, self-pity, well, they poison life. I need to learn to CHOOSE to forgive. Your anger does nothing to the person you hate... but it poisons you. Remember: anger, resentment and self-pity are like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die – stupid, hey?

We should choose to get more from life. If your life is really worthwhile it’s not really because you found it that way. John 10 v 10b: “I came that you might have life in all its abundance”. We can give only what we have received – have you received abundant life?

Along with that we should set our sights higher. The greatest mistake in life is not aiming too high and missing, but aiming too low and hitting!

We should put more into life. Acts 20 v 35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive”. Put more of yourself into others, those who need you most. (NB: not those who just need you!). Watch and see your

own life transform as you stop making yourself the centre of the universe. Put Christ in that central place and see how life takes on a whole new mean-ing.

Simple conclusion. If I would make more of my life it would not be changed circumstances... it would change me. Positive attitude, putting more into life, aiming higher and making a difference in the lives of all the valuable people we meet every day.

Your friend in Christ

Philip

We have received the following request from a local resident:

“ I am a mom with a son suffering from a disability called PVL(Periventricular Leukomalacia). Due to this disability, there is a huge chance that he would not be able to walk. The good thing is that cognitively, there is nothing wrong with the learning part of his brain. The problem however is that a mainstream school would not be an option due to mobility.

During the 19 month journey since his birth, I have in-teracted with a number of doctors, occupational ther-apists, physiotherapists, etc and thought it would be wonderful if a school can be developed in our area for these special kids that are also part of the community. Other parents with a similar challenge are invited to contact me to establish a forum to determine the de-mand for these special needs kids to attend a school in a safe environment where all the therapy needs are catered for.

Please contact me by e-mail at [email protected],

Blessings, Leonora”

With the sale of stands in an estate a balance must be in place be-tween marketing without jeopardising security in the best market-ing environment. In some estates this is achieved by limiting the number of estate agents. In Midrand Estates a process is followed where the individual agents from agencies are accredited through an induction course dealing with the HOA rules and other relevant information. From there onwards agents remain accredited by be-ing active in the estate which is checked against the access records.

Stands developed by Bondev are sold exclusively by Midteam Real Estate, whilst re-sales may be marketed and sold by accredited agents. In order to deal with the great variety of sale agreements, the signing of an addendum to a sale agreement is compulsory, prior to the issue of the clearance certificate by the HOA. The clearance certificate is required to affect the transfer of a property at the deeds office. By signing the pre-requisite addendum the new owner(s) acknowledges, amongst others, that he/she recognises that upon registration of the property, he/she will become a mem-ber of the HOA and is aware of the HOA's rules and regulations which will be accepted as being binding on him/ her as a member.

For ease of reference the details of estate agents is housed on the local web site (upon request and at no charge) and can be viewed at www.midrand-estates.co.za

Security plays an important role in the lives of the residents in Midrand Estates. Approximately 50% of the HOA levies are allocated towards security relat-ed items. To provide residents with a better under-standing on the multi-faceted security system that is in place, this article was compiled with the assistance of the HOA estate managers within Midrand Estates. The article provides insight into the security systems and also touches on ways in which residents can as-sist to enhance security for all.

The model of security in place at Midrand Estates can be compared to an onion due to its schema-tic representation, where security does not depend upon a single (layered) element but rather to a sys-tem of elements that interlink to provide a number of layers of security. The ‘onion model’ recognises that even if each layer can withstand a high percent-age of threats posed, it may be vulnerable on its own. The effectiveness is dramatically enhanced by adding further layers. And so with each additional layer the overall level of security improves.

The first layer – the tower control pointsAt Midrand Estates the first layer is represented by the towers at the precinct entrances and the spike control points that are manned. It provides an ob-servation point and whilst it is not expected to be an absolute barrier, it represents the first layer of security. A balance between traffic flow and control is adjusted during the day to manage the observa-tion point, yet allow flow of traffic to and from the greater area.

The second layer – the perimeter fenceThe perimeter fences have a number of layers within themselves as they are placed at critical points. The dual, electrical fence system with the 5m wide pa-trol area in between has proven to be a jewel in the crown of the Midrand Estates security system. Even though the two electrical fences are only 5 me-

ters apart, they are powered by separate energising systems and are equipped with back-up electricity supply. A razor coil fence within the 5m area pro-vides a final barrier within this layer of security. The replacement cost of the 5m wide real estate, when valued at R600 per square meter, and the structures forming the perimeter is estimated at approximately R6 000 per linear meter. The total investment in the 21km long perimeter fence erected to date exceeds R125 million, but has added untold value and peace of mind to the residents of Midrand Estates.

The third layer – the vehicle and pedestrian access control pointsThe biometric access control point at the access gates is another example where a layered approach in security is followed. Whilst access is gained by means of the biometric reader, photographs are captured of the vehicle and the driver. Access for residents is a simple affair whereas a more complex system is followed to screen visitors and capture valuable reference information. Alternative visitors’ access systems are in use at some gates, with alter-natives also being investigated. Indications are that irrespective of the system to be employed the em-phasis will remain on personal identification of visi-tors against an ID document.

The fourth layer – the “bobby on the beat”The security personnel with all the structures fulfil a vital role in the security system. They are the eyes and ears around when there is no one at home or everyone is sound asleep. A specific ratio of patrol-ling guards to the number of residences is in force with patrol routes predetermined to ensure an even spread of eyes and ears throughout the estate.

The “virtual” layer – additional items that add value Whilst the physical items mentioned above describe the layer-upon-layer that draws closer to home, a number of items have been added to further improve

The basics on security at Midrand EstatesA layered security model similar to the layers of an onion

the security in and around the residences of Midrand Estates. These being:

The surveillance helicopter – the “eye in the sky”: To observe risk areas from the sky the estates use a helicopter to fly and patrol over the developed areas as well as surrounding land areas. These include footpaths leading to the perimeter fences that might indicate a planned breach as well as an inspection of activities in the HOA park areas that may pose a security risk. A HOA security member joins the he-licopter crew and remains in contact with the team on ground level. Flights are normally scheduled for early morning or at dusk and have also taken place during full moon in areas where a lot of construction work is taking place. Some residents have shown

concern that the helicopter may be searching for car-jacking perpetra-tors – however, this is not the case. The regu-lar patrol with the “eye in the sky” is a crime preventa-tive measure.

The COIN armed response vehicle: A decision has been taken by the HOAs not to arm any of the guards. To provide armed response back-up for the guards a contract has been entered into with an armed re-sponse company to provide a full time vehicle for the area with two guards in attendance on a 24/7 basis. House alarms that are monitored: An alarm moni-toring service managed by the HOA is available free-of-charge to residents whereby a house alarm can be connected wirelessly to a local server.

The final layer – the resident and the resident’s at-titude towards securityThe final layer of security is represented by the res-ident’s house and the attitude of the resident to-wards security. It is acknowledged that security and security measures impact on the lives of all and may create an inconvenience from time to time. The question is whether the attitude is to work in line with the systems or rather to ignore or even by-pass them when possible.

Typical examples where residents ignore or by-pass the security systems are:Residents that employ gardeners that are not reg-istered and then transport them past the security gates in the boot of their vehicles. It has been found that in many instances the workers so “imported” were found to be without any ID documentation and without the resident knowing the person. Residents that complain bitterly when the compulsory de-reg-istration of domestic workers take place – a system that removes dormant data from the access control database to retain only active (and approved) users;Motorcycles or other vehicles that tail-gate (follow through) cars at the boom gates to escape the in-convenience of proper registration.

A request from the estate managers To further improve security the estate managers un-dertake to follow up on reports of suspicious behav-iour – the only condition being that a comprehensive report be submitted as soon as is possible after an observation.

To improve communication, residents are requested to provide the estate office with their contact num-bers. This is especially important during the holiday season.

To summarise With many preparing to leave the estate for a well deserved holiday it is great to know that one can do so without a real concern about security at home. The estate managers reported another year where a clean slate on serious crime was maintained. The incidents reported from within the estates falling in the petty theft and vandalism bracket where many of those involved were identified and accosted for. In the more public areas a number of laptop thefts have taken place from vehicles with an arrest made during the year. A car was also recently stolen from one of the office parks which have lead to an in-crease in control at the tower control points.

The building blocks are in place to provide a high level of security within the layered model and all res-idents are invited to assist in maintaining the service and also to enjoy the many facets of Midrand Estates life in a secure environment.

Mister Harmse

- mining for gold at Midstream College....

is a man on a

Mission

Mr Vernon Harmse, with his imposing figure and big heart, has become an integral part of the

primary school at Midstream College. He was em-ployed in April 2005, the year before the College opened its doors and had the unenviable task of signing up the parents of the first pupils at a time when the primary school classrooms were under construction and no school buildings or grounds were available to attract prospective parents!

Vernon hails from Pietermaritzburg and entered the teaching profession with passion, hard work and dedication. He abandoned his dream of becoming a geologist due to a lack of funds and subsequently funded his initial studies at the Durban Teacher’s College by means of a bursary awarded for rugby. He finished his degree through UNISA and followed this with an honours degree in Geography. Having represented the Natal rugby teams at u/19, u/20 and Wildebeest-level, his rugby career has con-firmed him as a permanent “sharkey”.

Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Marina with whom he has shared 27 wonderful years. Both their children (aged 22 and 19) are studying at the Pretoria University.

Vernon has been part of the team that established Midstream College and was involved in every aspect of the primary school - ranging from the school colours and uniform to the teaching team that he has as-sembled over time. Of the initial group of 24 teachers that was appointed during the latter half of 2005, 21 are still part of the teaching staff which has grown to a personnel compliment of 73!

He has many fond memories of Midstream College over the past years, mostly coupled with the achieve-ments of the pupils – not necessarily in ‘beating’ others in competition, but more in measuring the improve-ments individuals have made beyond their own expectations in all walks of life – sports, cultural, academic and the social fields of play. He would like to see “his” pupils go for gold and will strive to be there to sup-port them in their endeavours with the help of his teaching team and by using his management style to hone the process.

Vir Meneer Vernon Harmse was 2005 ‘n groot jaar.

Midstream College Primary School was officially opened on 17 January 2006, with Mr. V. Harmse as headmaster. There were originally 21 teachers and 370 learners from grade 1 to grade 7. It is with great pride that we introduce our very first grade 1-class as the leaders for 2012.

Die tema was “Lelike muis verloor sy stem / Nasty mouse loses his voice”.

Kenmerke:• Geel lelle• Geel snawel

die algemeen bruin.

“My belangrikste behoeftes...”

2. Vertrou my, want dit is vir ons albei belangrik.

5. Praat mooi met my.

Dit is vir my heerlik.

7. Ek hou baie van stap. Dis my manier om sosiaal te verkeer en my wêreld te leer ken.

9. Vlooie, bosluise en ander peste byt seer en maak my seer. Ondersoek my pels gereeld.

11. Leer my blaf ken. Jy sal gou agterkom wanneer ek jou roep, waarsku of sommer net wil speel.

Yesterday,“Today is not the day after

today is the day before

Tomorrow” Roger Hamilton

As the year draws to a close we tend to reflect on the past to consider all the positives and neg-atives! The life and times of Midrand-Estates in 2012 leaves one in awe considering the outstand-ing growth and development that’s taken place in the Estate. In no development in South Africa has the quote of Roger Hamilton’s been truer. Yes, we build on the successes of the past, but today is always the day before tomorrow for Bondev De-velopments! So we look towards 2013, 2014 with their exciting new prospects.

In 2012 Bondev sold over 300 stands. A large percentage of these building projects have already been completed whilst in others construction is still in process. Bondev Developments greatly appreci-ate the commitment of these builders and home owners to complete their projects timeously. Sta-tistics between Nov 2011 and Nov 2012 show the positive growth of Midlands Estate which is where most of the development is currently happening. In Nov of 2011 there were 697 completed houses in Midlands and today there are 1012!! Retire@Midstream’s Full Title Houses literally doubled with 43 com-pleted houses in Nov 2011 and 80 in Nov of 2012!! The number of Sectional Title Units also expanded rapidly due to high demand for quality Retirement Units. All in all, the past year has had astounding successes in all the different Midrand-Estates areas.

Dwelling on past successes is however not the Bondev way, building a new and excit-ing tomorrow is what we are about! The

new Midstream Hill Estate was launched with un-parall success on the 16th of November with the whole of extension 50 selling out to 87 eager buy-ers who were all wanting to become part of this amazing lifestyle! Midstream Hill will offer the same high quality security, parks and recreation areas as does the greater Midrand-Estates and new home owners can now be assured that they have chosen to invest in the best! We all look forward to watching Midstream Hill grow and develop into another Success Story.

We invite all our Residents to look towards tomor-row with as much vigor and excitement as we do! Merry Xmas to the whole Midrand-Estates family and may 2013 be a year of “building” your dream!

2013 se leiers is in Oktober aangekondig.

Karnaval-lekker-kry

A Final Farewell

Friday, 21 September, the day each and every grade 12 learner has dreamt about for five long years – the matric farewell. The spectators made the matriculants feel like Hollywood stars as they walked down the red carpet after arriving in Porches, limousines and vintage cars. The girls, dressed in exquisite and vibrant ball gowns and the boys in tailored suits and tuxedos, were welcomed into a silver and pink wonderland, decorated with candles, orchids and roses.

Inspiring speeches were made by Dr Carel Kriek as well as Amy Bezuidenhout and George Barnard, head leaders for 2012. Dr Kriek thanked the grade 12 learners for being a special group and establishing certain traditions in the school. He reminded them to make the evening special and to face whatever

may come their way with the knowledge that they will know their way.

The matriculants and teachers danced the night away and the dance floor was packed right until the end of the night! Who would have thought that such an anticipated evening would pass by so quickly?

Naudé Klopper, a director of the Midstream HOA sent the following article for publication in or-

der to convey information on points discussed at the recent annual general meeting.

Naudé says: “Adherence to traffic rules in the estate elicited a rather emotional debate at the recent Midstream HOA Annual General Meeting. Home owners were adamant that rules should be more strictly enforced. Furthermore, the meeting requested the Board to consider additional measures in or-der to ensure the safety of residents. The Board approved the appointment of two traffic officials.

Being privileged to live in a peaceful and safe en-vironment, we sometimes tend to believe that rules, laws and regulations governing the metro and the province do not apply to us. On the con-trary. Although we have a comprehensive set of

house rules to ensure good and responsible management of the various estates, pro-vincial and m u n i c i p a l traffic rules also apply to our community and we are obliged to respect these (especially with regard to the safety of our children).

The Board urges all residents to adhere to speed limits and to wear safety belts or safety helmets. Parents are warned not to allow toddlers to sit on their laps holding the steering wheel. Traffic fines will be issued for such offences. “

Traffic Rules in Midstream to be taken seriously:

Lock up!Past experience has shown that some residents neglect to lock their homes before leaving on holiday. Make sure that your front door (and other doors) are locked before you leave. Ensure that windows are closed properly and that all non-essential electrical appliances have been switched off and unplugged.

Garden Services and Emergency MaintenanceRoutine garden services may proceed as normal when you’re away on leave. Make the necessary ar-rangements for access to your yard. Emergency maintenance will be allowed.

Construction WorkAs laid out in the House Rules NO CONSTRUCTION will be allowed after the 15th of December.

PetsFor residents leaving pets behind, please ensure that they are properly taken care of while you’re away. Timeously arrange with your estate office to have right of entrance to the estates for people who may require access in order to look after your pets on your behalf. Make sure your pets have enough food and fresh water.

Before you leave on Holiday…

Nogmaals dankie

The training of the guards to enable them to deliver a professional service to the Midrand Estates community is a top HOA management priority. Other than the standard security related skills, the guards also receive basic fire fighting training.

The basic training in fire fighting was put to good use a few months ago when at 7:10 on a Monday morning smoke was seen coming from a residence in Midfield. The fire brigade was notified and fire fighting equipment quickly moved from the estate security room to the site. The night shift manager and some of the guards i m m e d i a t e l y commenced bringing the fire under control. Uncertain whether there might

still be occupants in the house a search took place – the owner later advised that the family had already left the house at 6am on that particular morning. Vehicles from the Tshwane and Ekurhuleni fire brigade soon arrived and completed the operation with senior personnel from the Ekurhuleni Metro handling the formalities.

Those present on site agreed that the quick reaction time and ready availability of equipment plus the willingness and ability of the security staff to assist prevented the fire from consuming the house in total. Good work again from the security staff!

Our guards are willing and able!
