President’s Message
Dear Members and Friends:
I am honored to address you as President of Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society. I feel that I have come full circle. Like many of you, I know the challenges of completing an education while working full-time and taking care of family. In addition, I have had the pleasure, for many years, to have a career in higher education that allowed me to assist and nurture adult learners in their journey to obtaining a college degree. Now as president of ASL -- a prestigious honor society specif-ically for adult students -- I am humbled.
My vision is to continue the legacy of previous leaders who have la-bored to make Alpha Sigma Lambda what it is today. I want to ensure that the Society continues to have a first-class student-centered plat-form capable of delivering social cohesion, supplemental educational opportunities, and enriching academic experiences while recognizing and honoring scholarship.
As Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society moves to the next level, we are dedicated to
strategically improving processes and internal systems increasing scholarship support continuing a sustainable organizational structure enhancing our ability to reach out to all stakeholders
Please stay in touch with Alpha Sigma Lambda through our website and other social media venues for updates and other important information. I look forward to working with you, and I thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Esther S. Powell, Ed.D President, Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society
We are sorry to announce the death of George Rogers. He served as ASL president from 1996 - 2000. Under his able leadership, ASL established its home office at Eastern Illinois University and hired its first staff member. Chapter membership grew 25% during his tenure.
George was a wise leader who was devoted to ASL's development, its integrity, and above all its service to adults in continuing education. We will miss his sense of humor, his perspective, and the pleasure of his company.
Our thoughts to his family and friends.

For the 2015-2016 academic year the WoMen’s and Adult Reentry Center held two induction
ceremonies for the Alpha Sigma Lambda honor society. In fall 2015 we inducted 26 students and in
spring 2016 we inducted 68 new members.
Both induction ceremonies saw students arriving with support from family and friends. Some faculty
and staff were in attendance, supporting students they have established relationships with while they
have been students. The spring ceremony was combined with the first annual Adult Reentry Recog-
nition Ceremony for graduates. It was wonderful to see the majority of the graduates as members of
Alpha Sigma Lambda. Congratulations to all new members and to all graduates.

University of Mississippi - DeSoto
The University of Mississippi – DeSoto chapter of the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society inducted 18 students
into the organization on April 19.
“It is an honor to recognize these outstanding students and welcome them into Alpha Sigma Lambda,” said Rick
Gregory, executive director of the regional campus. “They are a great representation of UM-DeSoto’s dedication to
excellence in academics.” Rachel Smith, assistant professor of marketing and local ASL chapter adviser, congratulated
the students at the induction ceremony.
“This celebration is about you – the best and the brightest, the hardest workers, the curve setters, the deep thinkers, the
ringers in the classroom,” Smith said. “Universities brag a lot about their faculty, their rankings and even physical f
acilities, but at the end of the day we are ultimately judged by the quality of our graduates. We are only as good as what
we produce – and that’s you. You are what matters most at this great university. You are our legacy and our building of a
better future.”
