All About ValueMORE FOR YOUR MONEY

2011 AUTOS

There are a lot of things that make the new lineup of 2011 vehiclesunique. They’re more efficient. They’re more powerful. They’remore practical for families.

But, above all else, the one trait they all

share is an intense focus on creating a

good value. No matter what type of 2011

model you’re looking for — from fuel-

sipping compact cars to high-end luxury

cruisers and pickup trucks — today’s

vehicles are more focused than ever

before on providing a good value for the

buyer.

This is partially because of the global

economic problems a couple of years

ago, which made buyers more picky

about how they spend their money, but

it’s also because of increased competition

in many of the most popular automotive

segments.

Crossover vehicles and pickups have

seen especially intense competition

lately, which means the manufacturers

are offering more features, refinement

and incentives to set their vehicles apart

from the pack.

And that means it’s a great time to be a

new car buyer. Here are four reasons why:

1. More refined vehiclesIn the past few years, the automotive industry has made hugeleaps in terms of refinement and technology. Even if your car is justa couple of years old, a quick test drive in a 2011 model will showyou just how quiet, efficient and solid today’s new cars havebecome.

2. Low-interest financingInterest rates remain some of the lowest on record, which meansfinancing your new vehicle can be surprisingly cheap. Manyexperts predict rising interest rates in the years to come, so yourdream car may be more attainable if you buy it now rather thanwaiting.

3. Better technologyPerformance, comfort and safety in today’s new cars are allenhanced by better technology. From cooled seats and back-upcameras to sophisticated airbags and stability control systems, thelatest car tech will blow you away.

4. A focus on efficiencyNot only are new cars better for the environment — they emit lesscarbon and pollution than older cars — but they can also save youmoney at the gas pump. Manufacturers are offering more fuel-effi-cient cars this year that can save you a fortune over the life of thevehicle.

It starts with a stiff bodystructure, extremely tightbody gap tolerances and anextensive wind-sealing sys-

tem. Buick then addsnotable QuietTuning fea-tures, including laminatedside glass in all four movingpassenger door windows;noise-reducing outsiderearview mirrors; lower pro-file “structureless” wind-shield wipers with a flexibleairfoil surface; a “double-isolated” powertrainmounting system; laminat-ed steel and compositenylon baffles in the roof pil-lars, rocker panels andcross-car structures; com-posite wheel housing liners, and more.

Hyundai recentlyintroduced its all-new 2011 Sonata,

which marks the NorthAmerican debut of the latestversion of the popular mid-size sedan. It also introducesHyundai’s “FluidicSculpture” design languageand an all four-cylinderengine lineup to the U.S.market.

The 2011 Sonata repre-sents a modern approach tothe traditional midsizesedan segment by usingonly advanced four-cylinderengines, emotional designand luxury features offeredwith Hyundai’s strong valueproposition. The 2011Sonata poses some intrigu-ing questions:

Why can’t a smart, solidsedan also have modern, sleek, sophisticated style?

Why pay so much toget a taste of luxury?

Why can’t an efficientfour-cylinder engine give V6power?

FLUIDICSCULPTURE

Fluidic Sculpture is a con-sistent, cohesive design lan-guage that will ripplethrough the entire Hyundaishowroom. In developingthe initial Sonata sketches,Hyundai designers consid-ered the interplay of natural, fluid elements with morerigid surfaces and structuresto create the illusion of con-stant motion. Inspired bynature, Fluidic Sculptureinjects sophistication anddynamic angles into the

shape of a vehicle and nowserves as the core ofHyundai’s future designidentity.

The exterior of the all-new Sonata is long, light andlow. The high beltline allowsfor a long, sleek rooflineaccented by the third win-dow. The face is bold with alarge powerful chrome grilleand headlamps that inte-grate precise details.

The sleek design, com-bined with Hyundai’sexpertise in interior packag-ing, has produced an interi-or that delivers class-leadingcomfort, functionality and

practicality. A sleek rooflinetypically compromisesheadroom and interior vol-ume but, at 120.2 cubic feet, the Sonata has the mostinterior volume of its keycompetitors. It is so spa-cious, Sonata continues tobe classified by theEnvironmental ProtectionAgency (EPA) as a Large car, truly a “class above” Camry,Altima, Fusion and Malibu(all are categorized asMidsize cars). Even in trunkroom, the Sonata shines.Sonata’s 16.4 cu. ft. of trunkspace gives it a 9.3 percentadvantage over the Camry,

and a 17.1 percent advan-tage over Accord.

ADVANCEDPOWERTRAINS

The new Sonata launcheswith Hyundai’s new 2.4-literfour-cylinder engine with aGasoline Direct-Injection(GDI) fuel delivery system, which contributes toimproved fuel efficiency andlower emissions. Sonata isthe first midsize sedan toadopt GDI technology asstandard equipment in anaturally aspirated power-

tain. This shorter, moredirect path of fuel delivery, allows for greater control ofthe fuel mixture at the opti-mum moment, thusimproving efficiency.

Sonata delivers animpressive 22 mpg city/35mpg highway fuel economyrating with the available six-speed automatic transmis-sion.

Hyundai’s commitmentto making the Sonataextremely fuel efficient con-tinues with a six-speedautomatic transmission withSHIFTRONIC manual con-trol or a standard six-speed

manual transaxle.Drivers can access the

SHIFTRONIC feature bymoving the gear selectorinto a separate gate. Pushingthe selector forward orpulling it rearward will shiftthe transmission up ordown sequentially, addingto driver control.

AGILEHANDLING

An advanced four-wheelindependent suspensionsystem combines a suppleride with precise handlingand steering response forSonata GLS and Limitedmodels. Sonata usesMacPherson strut front andmulti-link rear suspensionsystems with increased trav-el for improved wheel con-trol and a smoother ride.

The Sonata SE is an evenmore exciting and willingpartner for drivers who pre-fer sportier ride and han-dling dynamics. The sport-tuned suspension featuresstiffer springs and larger sta-bilizer bars, resulting in a 20percent increase in roll stiff-ness.

SAFETYSonata is built from the

ground up with safety inmind, with a hot stampedultra-high-strength steelbody structure, advancedairbag technology andElectronic Stability Control(ESC), delivering onHyundai’s commitment toboth active and passive safe-ty technology leadership.

2011 HYUNDAI SONATA

Smart, solid and sleek

Hyundai’s new 2011 Sonata proves affordable, efficient cars can also by sleek and sophisticated.

The 2011 Sonata represents a modern approach to the traditional midsize sedan segment by using only advanced four-cylinderengines, emotional design and luxury features offered with

Hyundai’s strong value proposition.

Backing up in a new car can be a risky ven-ture, especially in a roomy SUV or crossover. The spacious cabins that make them so popular can also make it tough to see behind you when in reverse.

That’s why so many new cars, trucks and SUVs are available with a back-up camera that can help make those tight parking lots and drive-ways easier to tame. It lets you see things you never could before — including small children or animals that could be hidden down low in an area that’s difficult to see from the driver’s seat.

Here’s how it works:

When you shift into reverse, a tiny video camera that is mounted at the rear of the vehicle turns on to show what’s behind you. The image is displayed where you

can see it easily from the driver’s seat — usually on an LCD monitor on the dash, but also in the instrument cluster or in the rear-view mirror on some vehicles — letting

you get a clearer picture of what’s in your path.

Some vehicles also have an audible alert to let you know when there is an object in your way, whether or not you see it in the video monitor. This can keep you from hit-ting something you didn’t notice when you glanced over your shoulder.

More OptionsThe basic back-up

camera is becoming quite common on many types of cars. It’s stan-dard equipment on many luxury vehicles, and it’s optional on a long list of entry-level to mid-range crossovers and SUVs.

Some luxury brands are even taking it a step

further. Infiniti, for exam-ple, offers a system on its EX crossover that has four video cameras that can show you all sides of the car when parking. It’s great for maneuvering through tight city streets.

Other high-tech safety features are also continu-ing to become available in more affordable 2011 models. Stability control, lane departure warnings, blind-spot sensors and similar electronic devices can give your car a space-age sense of safety.

It’s just another rea-son to visit your local car dealers to see what’s available — and surpris-ing — on the latest new vehicles.

GOING ELECTRICDON’T WANT TO USE GAS? YOU DON’T HAVE TO IN 2011

It’s long been a dream of environmentalists, and it’s finally becoming a reality in 2011. Chevrolet andNissan will be rolling out the first mass-market electric vehicles as 2011 models, and they each havea drastically different take on what an electric car should be. Here’s a look at both of them:

2011 CHEVY VOLTRANGE: 40 miles electric, 300 miles using supplemental gas tankCHARGING: Can charge on standard 120-volt outlet at home; 4,400buyers to get free 240-volt charging stationBASE PRICE: $41,000

Chevrolet’s 2011 Volt is getting lots of attention because it’s an elec-tric car without compromises. Unlike a pure electric vehicle, whichwould simply stop moving once its batteries run out of juice, the Volthas a small gas engine that can keep providing an electric charge toextend the range if necessary.

Unlike a hybrid, the Volt never uses its gasoline engine to directlydrive the wheels. It just generates electricity for electric motors to drivethe wheels.

Realistically, most people will rarely go beyond the Volt’s 40-milerange in pure electric mode. That’s plenty for everyday driving. But onthose occasions when you need to take a long trip down the highway, you’ll be able to stop and get gas just like in an ordinary car.

It’s designed to be the best of both worlds.

2011 NISSAN LEAFRANGE: 100 milesCHARGING: Eight hours on 200-volt outlet at home; 30 minuteswith a quick chargerBASE PRICE: $32,780

The Leaf is a much simpler car than the Volt, which makes it moreaffordable. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a gas engine that can provideelectricity to extend the range when needed.

Styling is also more futuristic on the Leaf, making it look like therevolutionary electric vehicle that it is. It looks like something out of“The Jetsons.”

One of the challenges of building an all-electric car is that pedestri-ans won’t hear it coming. It doesn’t have engine noise like a normalcar, so Nissan’s engineers came up with two special sounds it makeswhen going in forward or reverse.

Perhaps the best thing about the Leaf is its price, starting at $32,780.After a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 — which is also available forthe Volt, by the way — the total cost of the vehicle will come in around$25,000, which makes it affordable for more families.

“Cruze is already a hitacross Europe and Asia. Now it’s coming to Americato challenge the status quo,”said Jim Campbell, U.S. vicepresident, Chevrolet mar-keting “Along with the Voltelectric vehicle, Cruze is thelatest tangible example ofhow Chevrolet is working tobring new products to mar-ket that range from gas-friendly to gas-free.”

Leveraging Chevrolet’sdesign and engineering tal-ent in Asia, Europe andNorth America, the Cruzebrings a progressive, global-ly influenced design com-plemented by exceptionallevels of quietness, qualityand attention to detail –from precise tolerancesbetween body panels to theuse of premium materialsthroughout the interior.

LINEUPAll models share an inte-

rior characterized by premi-

um materials and a lengthyroster of unexpected equip-ment, including leadinginfotainment. A stereo sys-tem that includes MP3 play-back capability, six speakersand an auxiliary jack forpersonal playback devicesare standard. A premiumnine-speaker Pioneer soundsystem is available, as is aUSB port for iPod opera-tion. Other available tech-nologies include Bluetoothand a navigation system.

“There’s a lot of contentin all Cruze models; it wasdesigned to give customersthe features they want

regardless of the car’s size orsegment,” said Brooks.

A sporty RS appearancepackage is available on LTand LTZ trim levels, enhancing their styling withunique fascias, rockermoldings, rear spoiler andfog lamps.

DESIGNChevy Cruze’s design is

distinguished with a boldface – including a two-tiergrille with the iconicBowtie logo – that isChevrolet’s signature lookaround the globe. An arch-

ing roofline connects asteeply raked windshieldand fast-sloping rear pil-lars to give the car asporty, coupe-like propor-tion.

The sporty aesthetic isalso seen in prominentheadlamp housings thatwrap around the cornersand sweep upward in thefenders and sculptedhood, as well as a shortrear deck typically foundon sport coupes. Thewheels are at the corners, too, with minimal frontand rear overhangs. All theelements work cohesively

to give Cruze an aggressivelook that is complementedby a wide, confident-look-ing stance.

Indeed, the Cruze iswider and longer thanmost of its competitors.Taut, tightly drawn body-work conveys solidity, while restrained use ofexterior trim enhances thecar’s high-quality feel. Theoverall appearance is oneof purposeful precision.

INTERIOR Cruze’s bold design cues

and attention to detail carry

over to the interior, whereChevrolet's hallmark twin-cockpit motif is matchedwith high-quality materialsand exceptional assemblytolerances. Grained, soft-touch components and low-gloss trim panels exude aquality that is uncommonin the segment.

The instrument panel isan excellent example of howCruze eschews expectationsof compact cars. It featuresrichly detailed instrumentsthat are backlit with light-emitting diode (LED) tech-nology. The LED lights pro-vide a crisp, ice-blue illumi-nation of the analog instru-ments, as well as lighting forother interior controls. Asegment-rare standard driv-er information center deliv-ers a wealth of data to thevehicle driver.

ENGINESEnhanced with its

exhaust-driven tur-bocharger, the Cruze’sEcotec 1.4L turbo performslike a larger engine whenneeded, but retains theefficiency of a small-dis-placement four-cylinder inmost driving conditions. Itis standard on Eco, LT andLTZ models, with powerratings estimated at 138horsepower and 148 lb.-ft.of torque. An Ecotec 1.8Lfour-cylinder – standard onLS models – offers many ofthe same features of the1.4L, including full variablevalve timing that optimizesperformance and fueleconomy across the rpmband.

2011 AUTOS

TRUCK INNOVATIONSTODAY’S PICKUPS ARE BEING IMPROVED AT A RAPID PACE

If you’re a buyer, competition is a greatthing. It means multiple companies arefighting for your business, trying to

offer you more features for a lower price.

And in the automotive

industry, nowhere has com-

petition had a more dramatic

effect recently than in the

market for pickup trucks.

Today’s pickups are being

redesigned at a faster rate

than ever before, adding fea-

tures, performance and

refinement with each model

year to keep them competi-

tive. Even if your truck is

only a couple of years old, a

quick test drive can show

exactly how far the new 2011

models have come in a short

period of time.

Why are all these improve-

ments coming so quickly? It’s

simple: new competitors.

BACKGROUNDYears ago, if you wanted a

truck in America, you essen-

tially had three choices:

Ford, Chevy or Dodge.

Foreign competitors that had

been so successful in the car

market had largely left the

truck market untouched

because they didn’t have any

full-size, full-featured pick-

ups available.

Today, though, Nissan and

Toyota have both entered the

mix in a big way with their

Titan and Tundra models.

The American market is still

dominated by the domestic

brands — Ford, Chevy and

Dodge have a decades-long

head start, after all — but the

new competitors mean they

have to move more quickly

to stay relevant in a suddenly

crowded market.

You can see the result in

today’s trucks. They’re being

redesigned at a fast clip, just

like new cars, and they’re

adding luxury features, smart

technology and better per-

formance as they fight in a

fast-changing horsepower

war.

Don’t believe it? Then visit

a local dealer to see for your-

self.

Anew, premium Denalimodel joins the GMCAcadia lineup for

2011, adding a new dimen-sion of luxury and exclusivi-ty to this popular crossover. It brings the distinctiveDenali design elements, including a chrome honey-comb grille and monochro-matic exterior color cues, along with exclusive fascias,high-intensity dischargeheadlamps and unique inte-rior features.

“The GMC Denali modelshave come to stand for luxu-ry and exclusivity, and that’sjust what customers will getin the new Acadia Denali,”said Lisa Hutchinson, GMCproduct marketing director.“The decision to develop anAcadia Denali was madequickly within the new GMin response to customer anddealer demand for a Denaliversion ever since thelaunch and success of theAcadia.”

Indeed, the Acadia con-tinues to win over cus-tomers. In a still-recoveringmarket, Acadia sales wereup nearly 45 percent in thefirst quarter of 2010, makingit second in brand sales toonly the broad Sierra rangeof trucks.

In addition to the newAcadia Denali, the Acadia isoffered in two cloth trims,SL and SLE, and leathertrims designated SLT1 andSLT2. All models are avail-able in front-wheel-driveand all-wheel-drive withseven- or eight-passengerseating configurations. Acomprehensive safety sys-tem includes six standard

air bags and standardStabiliTrak electronic stabili-ty control system with trac-tion control and rollovermitigation technology.

AT A GLANCEAcadia’s body-frame inte-

gral structure enables lowerentry/exit height for passen-gers. Despite the vehicle’sSUV-like front-end height, the front door step-in heightis only 18.9 inches; the reardoor step-in height is 19.8inches. Entry to the second-and third-row seats is easywith very wide rear doors

and GM’s exclusive SmartSlide second-row seat fea-ture.

All models are poweredby a 3.6L V-6 VVT enginethat uses gasoline directinjection technology to opti-mize performance and fueleconomy. The engine ispaired with Acadia’s fuel-saving six-speed automatictransmission to help giveFWD models an EPA-esti-mated 24 mpg on the high-way. The Acadia also iscapable of towing up to5,200 pounds when properlyequipped.

Acadia’s interior exudes

refinement and attention todetail, with many thoughtfulfeatures designed into afinely crafted environment.A car-like “low and away”instrument panel enhancesthe feeling of openness inthe front-row seats and pro-vides a commanding out-ward view. The instrumentpanel and other interior ele-ments feature high-quality,low-gloss materials andtight gap tolerances.

SEATINGAll Acadia models offer

three rows of seating that

can be configured for sevenor eight passengers, regard-less of the trim level. Theseating configurationsinclude two front bucketseats, a 60/40-split second-row bench (three passen-gers) or two second-rowcaptain’s chairs (two passen-gers) and a 60/40-split third-row bench seat. Generousstorage space of 24.1 cu. ft.is available behind thethird-row seat.

GM’s exclusive SmartSlide feature is standard onall second-row configura-tions, allowing quick andeasy access to the third-row

seating area. The second-row seat cushion flips upwhile the seatback slidesforward, effectively com-pressing the space occupiedby the seat with the pull of alever.

The Smart Slide systemalso allows the second rowto be positioned fore/aft.When adjusted rearward, the second-row seat pro-vides more legroom fortaller passengers; whenadjusted forward, it providesmore storage space or addi-tional legroom for third-rowpassengers. Seating space issufficient for adults in allpositions.

SAFETYAcadia’s 360-degree safety

system helps protect pas-sengers before, during andafter a crash.

A strong structure is thefoundation, while a widestance and low center ofgravity helps reduce thelikelihood of a rollover.Acadia’s structure is rein-forced in numerous areaswith high-strength steel, including a stiff steel cross-car beam welded across thefloor between the B-pillars.

Acadia is equipped withsix standard air bags: twodual-stage frontal air bagsfor the driver and front pas-senger; two seat-mountedside-impact air bags in thefirst row; and two head cur-tain side-impact air bagsthat cover all three seatingrows. The head curtain sideair bags are among thelongest air bags in any pro-duction vehicle.

GMC’s Acadia crossover gets a luxurious new Denali model added to its lineup for 2011.

“The GMC Denali models have come to stand for luxury and exclusivity, and that’s just what customers will get in the new Acadia Denali. The decision to develop an Acadia Denali was made quickly within the new GM in response to customer and

Armed with tur-bocharged horsepow-er, a driver-selectable

suspension system and afirm, European-tunedchassis, the all-new BuickRegal delivers a drivingexperience that rivals thebest import sport sedans inthe segment.

“The 2011 Buick Regal islike nothing you’ve everexperienced from thisbrand,” said RogerMcCormack, director ofproduct marketing forBuick. “The Regal is thenext chapter in Buick’stransformation and willexpand the portfolio toinclude a modern sportsedan.”

The new Regal takes oncompetitors such as theAcura TSX and Volvo S60. Ithas a longer wheelbase andgreater trunk volume thanthose vehicles, along withstandard features – includ-ing a six-speed automatictransmission, 18-inch alloywheels and OnStar – thataren’t offered standard oneither competitor. And withan estimated 30 mpg onthe highway, it deliversexcellent fuel economy, too.

The Regal’s developmentis rooted in Germany, where the globally led engi-neering team created theaward-winning OpelInsignia – the 2009European Car of the Year. The Insignia has garneredmore than 31 prestigiousawards and is the best-sell-ing midsize sedan inEurope. Regal will bring allof Insignia’s award-winning

design, technology andEuropean-inspired per-formance capabilities tothe American market.

DESIGNThe Regal’s sleek body

design blends the sweepingsilhouette and proportionsof a coupe in a progressivepackage that suggestsmotion from all angles.Great attention to detailcomplements that aggres-sive styling, with tailoredapplications of Buick’s sig-nature design cues, such asthe waterfall grille, select

use of chrome trim andsuperior fit and finish ofthe exterior panels.

“Regal is all about greatproportions,” said JohnCafaro, design director, passenger car. “For exam-ple, the fenders are flaredto wrap around the tires, anaggressive stance that peo-ple aren’t used to seeing inrecent Buicks.”

The car’s performance-oriented spirit is also con-veyed in sleek, sculptedbody-side detail andaggressive headlamps thatfurther suggest motion. Atthe rear, an abbreviated

deck and tucked-in bodypanels are the hallmarks ofa contemporary sportsedan, with bold taillampsand their intricate lightingelements reinforcingRegal’s attention to detail.Eighteen-inch alloy wheelsare standard.

INTERIORThe Regal’s finely craft-

ed, sporty and well-appointed interior buildson the exceptional atten-tion to detail found in theEnclave and LaCrosse, blending signature styling

cues with contemporarysport sedan aesthetics.

Regal’s firm, highly bol-stered seats were bench-marked against the topimport competitors forcomfort and support, whilea standard flow-throughcenter console offers plentyof storage for passengers inthe front and back.

Smart applications oftechnology are also hall-marks of the Regal, includ-ing details such as an avail-able multi-function con-troller on the center con-sole for operation of theaudio system, navigation

system and Bluetooth orOnStar hands-free calling. The faceplate for the “info-tainment” screen is set at a30-degree angle to con-tribute to the car’s flowinginterior design.

UNDER THE HOOD

Unique with its all-four-cylinder powertrain, theRegal relies on the excellenthorsepower-per-liter ratioof the Ecotec engine familyto deliver smart, on-demand performance thatis also very efficient.

Both the standard 2.4Lengine and the available2.0L turbo use direct injec-tion technology to optimizeperformance, reduce emis-sions and maximize fuelefficiency. The 2.4L is thesame engine offered in theBuick LaCrosse, but in thesmaller, lighter Regal, itdelivers more agile per-formance. The 2.0L turbocements the sport sedancredibility of the Regal, with on-demand powercomparable to a V-6, butthe inherent efficiency of afour-cylinder. To ensureresponsive power acrossthe rpm range, the 2.0Lturbo uses a twin-scrollturbocharger that buildspower quickly at lowerrpm.

Distinct, uniquely cali-brated six-speed automatictransmissions are pairedwith each engine. Bothoffer driver shift controlthat enhance the sportydriving feel of the Regal.

2011 BUICK REGAL

New Buick bred on autobahn

The 2011 Buick Regal represents a completely new, sporty look for the Buick brand.

Ford Explorer – thevehicle that defined asegment – has been

completely reinvented, rais-ing customers’ expectationsof sport utility vehicle (SUV)fuel efficiency, safety, tech-nology, capability and qual-ity.

“The all-new Explorerwill deliver today’s SUVbuyers the attributes theyreally want and value, and afew they might not evenhave dreamed of,” saidMark Fields, Ford presidentof The Americas. “We’reproud to introduce the newExplorer to customers andfans around the world todayand pleased to begin awhole new era that blendsstrong SUV fuel economyand performance.”

The all-new Explorerlaunches today to itsFacebook friends in aunique social media initia-tive, followed by revealevents throughout the U.S.and Canada.

MODERN SUV“The new Explorer simply

does everything well,” saidDerrick Kuzak, group vicepresident, Global ProductDevelopment. “It raises thebar for ride and handling onthe road and transforms theoff-road experience. It’s thehands-down winner fortowing capability and ease. All this capability – andthree rows of seating – withamazing fuel economy willmake Explorer the absoluteright choice for familieswith a sense of adventure.”

The 2011 Explorer with

V6 power is expected todeliver more than 20 per-cent better fuel economythan the 2010 model, shat-tering conventional expec-tations for SUV fuel effi-ciency. When equippedwith the available 2.0-literEcoBoost I-4 engine,Explorer fuel economy isexpected to improve bymore than 30 percent andexceed the 2010 HondaPilot and 2010 ToyotaHighlander V6.

Chief NameplateEngineer Jim Holland saidthe team targeted two keyobjectives when developing

the 2011 Ford Explorer.“It had to look modern

and contemporary – insideand out – yet be instantlyrecognizable as anExplorer,” said Holland.“Next, the new Explorerneeded to deliver the fueleconomy today’s customerswant, combined with theperformance, capability andempowerment they expectfrom an SUV.”

DESIGNIn addition to its clean,

modern design inside andout, Explorer aims to please

SUV shoppers with athoughtful, flexible interiorpackage that abounds withclever storage capacity. Thenew SUV features morehead and shoulder room, three rows of flexible seat-ing, and room for every-thing families want to takealong on their adventures.

The Explorer design –inside and out – is execut-ed with world-class crafts-manship. Tight margingaps are just one indica-tion of the immense atten-tion to detail applied tocraftsmanship across thespectrum, from design to

engineering to manufac-turing.

The Chicago facilitywhere Explorer will be pro-duced raised the bar oninitial quality measureswith the recent Tauruslaunch, which is goodnews for customers.

“Crafting a high-qualityvehicle is like preparing agourmet meal,” said PeterBejin, craftsmanshipsupervisor. “You start withhigh-quality ingredients, execute your recipe withflawless preparation andfinally, present it with flairand panache.”

Quietness – another pro-found advancement in theall-new 2011 Ford Explorer– also will signal quality tocustomers.

SAFETYThe all-new Explorer tar-

gets top safety ratings witha stiff unibody structureand a class-leading suite ofactive and passive safetyfeatures and technologies, plus another Ford safetyinnovation – the world’sfirst second-row inflatablerear belts.

Rear seat passengers –often children or maturepassengers – can be morevulnerable to head, chestand neck injuries. Ford’sunique inflatable rear beltsspread impact forcesacross more than five timesthe area than conventionalseat belts, reducing pres-sure on the chest whilehelping to control headand neck motion. Beltcomfort should also helpincrease usage rates.Studies show inflatablebelts to be more comfort-able for passengers due topadding.

From the boron frontbumper beam through thehydroformed front framerails and high-strengthsteel side-impact tubes,Explorer’s rigid body struc-ture is designed to providerobust protection for occu-pants. In the instance of acrash, these elementscome together to protectExplorer driver and pas-sengers inside a safety cageof strength.
