Magna Carta, 1215
“No freeman shall be taken, imprisoned, ceased, outlawed, banished, or in any way destroyed, nor
will we proceed against or prosecute him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers and by the
law of the land.”
“It is accordingly our wish and command that the English Church shall be free, and that men in our kingdom
shall have and keep all these liberties, rights, and concessions, well and peaceably in their fullness and
entirety for them and their heirs, of us and our heirs, in all things and all places forever.”

Summary of
speech given by Pope Urban II at the Council of
Clermont in France, on November 27, 1095.
"The West must march to the defense of the East. All should go,
rich and poor alike. The Franks must stop their internal wars
and squabbles. Let them g o instead against the infidel and
fight a righteous war.
"God himself will lead them, for they will be doing His work. There will be absolution and remission of sins for all
who die in the service of Christ. Here they are poor and miserable sinners; there they will be rich and happy. Let
none hesitate; they must march next summer. God wills it!
