Form Finding and 3D Tesselation

A tessellation of a flat surface is the tiling of a plane using one or more geometric shapes, with no overlaps and no gaps. The history of tesselation started with tilings. Netherlands' architect Mauritus Cornelius Escher was well known for his "decorative arts" in the field of tesselation and this is what gets my interest. However, as new technology been used in design process of architecture, new forms of architecture is emerging, therefor the design of tesselation should develop further as well.

With the help of digital design, architects have the ability to create complex patterns and geometry to provide surfaces for tilings to apply on. For example the Federation Square's unique building facade is made of sandstone panels and glass panels.

However, I find that the lack of complexity and lack of visual form started to bored me. Tesselation was limited by the surface which they apply on, the complex form were bounded with the surface. The improvement of technology provide much more potential to tesselation as we can design 3D patterns which allow us to build structure form with these pattern without the help of any other element or surface. It has free the tesselation from 2D based design concept to free form 3D desgin.

Precedent Project Study : The Grotto Pavilion

This is a project done by Benjamin Aranda and Chris Lasch. It was a small concept project that wasn't been built. However I found it interesting because it was design using 3D tesselation digital modeling. It was designed as an underground space where the visitors too a journey of exploring the hidden place. The control of light using the gap between the pattern engage people to search deeper. It is interesting as it has different pattern to achieve this dynamic effect. However all the elements are in the same scale which does not provide any contrust as it is underground, there is nothing to emphasize the scale of the blocks.

Change Base Pattern and Voronoi Setting

Through this practice, I find that the base pattern define the form of the design, however, various change still can be made through changing the vectors and the generation principle of the points for the voronoi function.

Reverse the value of Z-axis vector and changing force

By reversing the Z-axis value, I'm able to create landscape design and also mountain shaped form. Negetive force create space for underground area and also volum in under the strucutre. Void allow light flow through the structure.

Changing AnchorPoints and cull points from the list

Complex and disorganized shapes are formed through this exersize, Although the original form remains, the aesthetic value no longer exist as there is no order in the form.

Pavillion design based on the original design

A ring shaped pavillion using the kangaroo plugin to push the definition to its limit. The amount of points set for Voronoi is important as the anchor points are related to it. Thus the final result is only achieveable in a limit amount of volts, otherwize the size of the design needs to be changed inorder.

Through these exercise I have mastered the Voronoi function and understand how to control the form through different change of vectors value or base pattern.

The form finding process is the first step for 3D Tesselation design as the form is also the structure for the desgin.

Process:1.Loft the base surface

2.Create mesh on the surface, offset points, create circle useing the points as center points.

3.Use Kangaroo Plugin to create force onto the volts .
