Alcoa announcelight heavy-dutytruck wheel

Alcoa has rolled out the world’s lightest heavy-duty truck wheel. Thislatest Alcoa innovation, the Ultra ONE, will help trucks shed pounds forincreased payload and fuel efficiency.

Alcoa’s new 40-lb. wheel is 47% lighterthan steel wheels of the same size. TheUltra ONE can help save up to 1,400 lbs.per rig, enabling fleets to carry more goodswhile meeting stringent federal emissionsregulations.

“Alcoa continues to reinvent the wheel. The Ultra1 wheel is truly 40 lbs. of puremuscle,” said Tim Myers, president ofAlcoa Wheel and Transportation Products.

To take out five pounds out of its lightestheavy-duty truck wheel, Alcoa’s experts at the Alcoa Technical Centerinvented a new alloy, the patent-pending MagnaForce alloy.

The Ultra ONE Wheel with MagnaForce alloy is available in the indus-try standard 22.5 in. x 8.25 in. size for heavy-duty, commercial transporta-tion, and is being readied in all OEM customer data books. Truck manu-facturers can specify Ultra ONE using the product code ULTRAx. UltraONE wheels are available in all Alcoa finish options.

Volvo Trucks announced its Greenhouse Gas 2014- certified engines areproviding greater fuel efficiency than anticipated. The integrated enginesare delivering up to a 3% fuel efficiency improvement compared with their2013 counterparts.

“We remain focused on ensuring that the ongoing phases of engine andvehicle regulations do not burden our customers, but instead create valuefor their operations,” said Gor̈an Nyberg, president, Volvo Trucks NorthAmerican sales & marketing.

A combination of in-lab and on-road testing proved that the initiallyannounced fuel efficiency figures of up to 2% understated the true fuel sav-ings and value of 2014 Volvo engines.

Refinements and design changes contributing to fuel efficiency improve-ments in Volvo’s 2014 D11, D13 and D16 engines include:

Low-friction cylinder improvements, including a redesigned piston, linerand oil scraper ring developed with smoother surfaces;

A clutched air compressor, which reduces engine load by completelydisengaging the clutch from the engine when not in use;

Advanced combustion technology of a new seven-hole injector, whichoffers better fuel atomization for a more even distribution of fuel within thecylinder, maximizing fuel efficiency and offering a greater savings for cus-tomers; and

An improved crankcase ventilation system, which filters more oil fromblow by gases before they leave the engine and at the same time improves

engine backpressure for better performance.Along with fuel efficiency improvements, a two-piece valve cover on the

D13 engine improves serviceability, which reduces repair time and is easierto handle than previous covers. Volvo also removed lead from the valve-train of its 2014 engines to reduce its environmental impact.

In addition Volvo Trucks’ XE powertrain package boosts fuel efficiencyby up to an additional 3%. Available on Volvo VNM and VNL modelsequipped with 2014 Volvo engines, the XE11, XE13 and XE16 packagesimprove fuel efficiency by lowering engine RPM at a given vehicle speed, aconcept Volvo calls “downspeeding.”

Fuel efficiency improves by about 1.5% for every 100 RPM of down-speeding, so customers spec’ing the XE package can expect up to a 3%improvement when compared with another overdrive transmission in asimilar operation.

“The theme of our MATS booth is ‘Definingthe Future,’” said Rick Phillips, Yokohama sen-ior director, commercial and OTR sales. “Newproducts like the ones we have at MATS willplay a big part in our future, especially withthe October 2015 opening of our new commer-cial tire plant in Mississippi.”

Ultra wide base (UWB) tires such as the 902Land 709L are part of YTC’s long-term plan, according to Phillips. “We’re seeing more of ademand for them because of the weight sav-ings, which is where fleets can find an immedi-ate benefit. It’s something tangible they canmeasure and calculate savings,” he said.

“The 902L long-haul/regional ultra widebase drive tire delivers superior traction andhigh mileage,” said Phillips. “Its tread design

makes a real difference in extreme driving con-ditions, such as in snow and ice.”

The 902L comes in size 445/50R22.5.Highlights include: A 27/32 tread depth thatcreates higher traction while providing extra-long treadlife; an advanced rubber compoundthat lowers rolling resistance and reduces heatbuild-up, which boosts fuel economy; sevencircumferential grooves that enhance lateralstability and create long wear with an evenfootprint; a zero-degree mid belt that providesweight distribution for even pressure andincreased treadlife; and a specially-engineeredsmall block and sipe combo that reduces heel-toe wear, increases fuel economy and provideshigh snow traction.

“Yokohama introduced the 709L at MATSand it will be available at the end of the year insize 445/50R22.5,” Phillips said. “It’s built forlong wear and fuel efficiency, thanks to itsadvanced rubber compound. Plus, its specialcasing enhances durability for retreading.”

The 709L on-high-way ultra wide basedrive tire features:Seven serpentinegrooves that reduce treadmovement, add rigidity anddecrease rolling resistance; Double Z blocksthat increase rigidity to prevent heel-toe wearfor a long, even-lasting tire life while increasingwet and snow traction; a 24/32 tread depththat decreases tread block movement for stabil-ity, low rolling resistance and increased fuelefficiency; and a zero-degree mid belt that pro-vides even pressure and weight distribution forincreased treadlife and an even footprint.

Phillips described the new 315/80R22.5104ZR Spec-2 as “a workhorse that deliverslonger treadwear, low rolling resistance andenhanced traction, making it ideal for coachand regional/long haul tour bus applications.”

Unique Truck Equipment highlights its pre-trip inspection toolUnique Truck Equipment announces a cost

effective way to perform pre-trip inspections andcomply with Comprehensive Safety Analysis(CSA). The Pre-Trip Inspection Tool is designedto allow drivers and mechanics an easy way toperform their pre-trip inspections. The Pre-TripInspection Tool can check the following vehiclemaintenance items: Tire tread wear for both thesteer and drive tires; brake stroke; brake shoe

thickness; size of windshield cracks.By equipping an entire fleet with the Pre-Trip

Inspection Tool, safety managers can providetheir drivers with a convenient and efficient wayto ensure that the inspections are being per-formed satisfactorily. Not only is it small enoughto fit into the pocket of the driver, but also it canbe conveniently attached to a key chain.

By using the Pre-Trip Inspection Tool, fleets

will save money two ways. By encouraging driv-ers to comply, fleets will have fewer DOT viola-tions and citations. Additionally. if techniciansare able to keep the compliant vehicles on theroad longer by not pulling them prematurely, fleets won’t incur unnecessary expenses associat-ed with replacing tires.

Spectra Premium releases 13 new radia-tors for heavy-duty trucks, covering popularFreightliner, International and Kenworthtrucks, as well as Bluebird/Carpenter buses. The coverage also extends to late-modeltrucks such as the 2013 Freightliner CascadiaSeries.

In addition to being engineered, devel-oped and validated in the company’sCanadian facilities, these 13 aluminum radi-ators are also manufactured in its Lavalplant in Quebec. This ensures a stringentquality control process from development toproduction. Certain design improvementswere performed such as the redesigning ofthe OE mounting structures allowing a ther-

mal expansion in the Spectra Premium radiator, which will eliminate tube-to-header leaks. All radiators are fit tested on the very same trucks they aredeveloped for to ensure a perfect fit and utilize a brazed seam over gasketsin plastic-aluminum radiators for a more robust solution.

Radiators also undergo rigorous product validation including thermalcycling tests to simulate thermal expansion and real-time operating condi-tions to meet rigorous demands of the North American trucking industry.

Ford’s sec-ond-generation 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbodiesel now boasts 440 HP, up from 400 HP, and860 lb.-ft. of torque, up from 800 lb.-ft., across allSuper Duty models from F-250 to F-450.

The 2015 F-450 tops the F-Series Super Dutypickup truck lineup with maximum towingcapacity increasing to a class-leading 31,200 lbs.,a gain of 6,500 lbs. The truck’s gross combinedweight rating increases to a class-leading 40,000lbs., a gain of 7,000 lbs.

F-350 increases maximum towing capacity aswell, to 26,500 lbs., from 23,200 lbs., and thegross combined weight rating goes up 5,000 to35,000 lbs.

The improved ratings are a result of designingand engineering the truck as an integrated sys-tem. The approach enabled Ford engineers tooptimize performance across the full Super Dutylineup.

“Our chassis people work in unison with our

powertrain people to develop more than a greattruck, it’s a machine engineered for work,” saidDoug Scott, Ford Truck group marketing man-ager. “Our chassis people have worked in unisonwith our powertrain people to develop morethan a great truck—it’s a machine engineered forwork.”

The 2015 Super Duty achieves best-in-classtowing performance with a second-generation6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel engine thatwas further developed to provide more power, torque and efficiency.

“The 6.7-liter Power Stroke was already a stoutengine,” said Robert Fascetti, Ford vice presidentpowertrain engineering. “The improvementswe’ve made essentially give Super Duty cus-tomers an engine designed for our larger F-650

and F-750 trucks. They may not realize howtough this engine really is.”

The F-350 is available with a high-capacitytowing package that includes new front springsand a wide track axle, increasing the gross com-bined weight rating with the 6.7-liter PowerStroke engine from 31,900 to 35,000 lbs.

Improvements to the F-450 that allow it to han-dle the increased tow rating include commercial-grade 19.5-in. wheels and tires; upgraded rear U-joints and suspension components, includingnew rear leaf springs; front and rear stabilizerbars; and shocks. The steering system hasstronger gears and linkages and the fifth-wheel/gooseneck has an increased towingcapacity.

Detroit Diesel Corp. (Detroit) is showcasing its most innovative solutions, whichincludes the Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission, Detroit axles, Detroit engines, and the newest addition to the family—Detroit Connect.

Available in the Freightliner Cascadia Evolution and part of the Detroit product offer-ing, the DT12 combines the operational ease of an automatic with the efficiency of a man-ual transmission, resulting in enhanced fuel economy, vehicle performance and safety.

Shearing noted that customers have committed to the DT12 because of innovative fea-tures such as creep mode, which modulates the clutch to improve low-speed maneuver-ability, making backing up to a loading dock or maneuvering through tight city trafficeasier. Skip Shift, which automatically skips gears, enables the transmission to runthrough lower gears faster to achieve cruising speed sooner. Another feature that hasaccelerated the acceptance of the DT12 is the shifter—with easy access to all the features(i.e. Jake Brake, Forward, Reverse, etc.) a driver needs. The DT12 delivers what fleets anddrivers are looking for, simplicity.

The DT12 comes standard with a 5-year/750,000-mile warranty, and a 3-year/350,000-mile warranty on the clutch. The Detroit Customer Service network provides immediateaccess to maintenance information, and with hundreds of authorized locations in the U.S.and Canada, factory-trained technicians are always available.

Show attendees also see a detailed cutaway of the DT12 showcasing the single counter-shaft, and helical cut gears. There will also be detailed cutaways of the DD15 engine withthe proprietary asymmetric turbo and tandem axle with precision cut gears.

Dana’s new Spicer E-Series steer axles on display Dana Holding Corp. introduced additions to the company’s family of

Spicer E-Series steer axles that deliver best-in-class performance and dura-bility with up to 35 lbs. less weight.

Available in the first half of 2015, these steer axles feature a steel-forgedbeam design that reduces axle weight while still delivering the strengthand torsional stiffness needed for superior vehicle braking response. Theaxles are targeted for on-highway, city delivery and bus chassis applica-tions with gross axle weight ratings from 10,000 to 13,200 lbs.

This new steer axle system is the latest in a lineup of robust Spicer tech-nologies that reduce weight and improve vehicle performance, enablingoriginal-equipment manufacturers to offset the added weight associatedwith important technologies such as new fuel-efficient engines, diesel par-ticulate filters and urea injection systems. The benefits of the new Spicer E-Series Steer enable OEMs to further maximize chassis weight distributionand may also allow fleets to forego the higher rated, more expensive tires

needed to support heavier front steer axles.“We have applied our global engineering resources to deliver new Spicer

E-Series steer axles that support the highest levels of performance, offeringfleets weight savings that increase efficiency and reduce the total cost ofownership,” said Pat D’Eramo, president of Dana Commercial VehicleDriveline Technologies.

The new lightweight steer axles build on patented, market-leadingadvancements already offered by Spicer E-Series axles, such as a largerdiameter king pin, two- drawkey king pin retention, compressible king pininserts, and tie rod end sealing. These features work together to enhancedurability, reduce maintenance and improve alignment capabili-ty. Booth #30455 www.dana.com/commercialvehicle
