“The U.S. trucking industry is thebackbone of the world’s largesteconomy,” began Dr. WolfgangBernhard, member of the Board ofManagement of Daimler AGresponsible for Trucks and Buses, atFriday morning’s HDMA Breakfastand Briefing. “Trucking is trans-porting 9.2 billion tons of freightper year, around half-a-billion com-panies are working in this industryand 6.8 million people work in thisindustry. It’s an important part ofour economy and when the econo-my grows we know that trans-

portation will grow with it.” Bernhard shared Daimler’s view

of trucking. He shared that GDPgrowth is expected to be around3%, with growth in trucking esti-mated up to 10% for this year. Yet,Bernhard was optimistic thatgrowth could surpass 10% for theyear, based on Daimler’s promisingorder intake.

Much of the current demand iscoming from small and mediumfleets, as well as rental, accordingto Bernhard. He stated that rentalgrowth is a sign that there isfreight transport work to be done,but that some might not trust thelatest truck technologies and rentbefore investing in new products.

The U.S. trucking market remainsthe most sophisticated truckingmarket in the world, according toBernhard, as many truck purchasesare in tune with new technologiesand data that keeps their businesses

moving forward. Fuel efficiency and greenhouse

gas (GHG) standards were also amajor theme at the morning’sbreakfast briefing. Bernhardstressed the importance of settingemission standards that are alsoprofitable for OEs. Now that settingthe standards for GHG phase 2 isunder discussion, Bernhardstressed that “We need to followthe full vehicle standard—payingattention to everything that is onthe vehicle.” But Bernhard cau-tioned, “If the EPA goes beyond

what customers will pay for, we aredoing it wrong,” he said.

Another aspect of improving fuelefficiency is improving our coun-try’s roads. Bernard said the indus-try needs to encourage legislationto work to improve road surfacesand lobby for better infrastructuresthat reduce road congestion thatforces trucks to sit in traffic withengines idling.

When asked about future alterna-tive fuels, Bernhard responded,“My alternative fuel of choice isdiesel, and I don’t see anythingreplacing it in the near future.”Despite the recent interest in natu-ral gas, it is not the solution for longhaul operations at this time, but itwill remain a viable option forfleets urban delivery with centralfueling. Currently, there are 200times more diesel fueling stationsversus natural gas, which is also anissue.

SAF-HOLLANDannounces the intro-duction of its 13.5kcapacity, NEWAYLSZ AuxiliarySteerable Lift AxleSuspension System.

With a 17.5-in. package size, theLSZ’s revolutionary design is a mini-mum of 4 in. up to 10 in. shorter thancomparable lift axles. This rugged,yet compact, design offers customersapplication versatility, enables easyinstallation and service and providesextra frame rail space for componentpackaging and options.

The Super Chamber lift on the LSZoutperforms traditional air springsby providing a quick and reliablefour-second lift speed. This uniquedesign is more durable than competi-tive lifts and provides a stronger andmore consistent lift force that keepsthe axle securely stowed. The SuperChamber position provides increased

protection from road hazards andeasier access for servicing.

The LSZ’s rolling lobe air springsare positioned at an angle, deliveringa superior spring rate for increasedstability and ride quality. Its parallel-ogram design maintains precisesteering geometry while reducingtire wear.

The rugged design utilizes a king-pin assembly with spherical bear-ings, which eliminate thrust bearingsthat often require shimming andreaming. As a result, service require-ments are greatly reduced.

Eaton launches optimizedtransmission of AdvantageSeries Transmission

Eaton announced that an optimized version of its Fuller AdvantageSeries Automated 10-speed transmissions is available on select PAC-CAR trucks with the MX-13 engine in order to maximize fuel efficiencyin linehaul applications. This powertrain package is lighter in weight,provides smooth, automated shifting, and is designed to enhance the

time spent in a diesel engine’s most efficient RPMzone to help reduce fuel consumption.

For PACCAR, the MX-13 enginewill be paired with the new

Eaton Fuller Advantage

10-speedtransmission and avail-

able for Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks in long-haul and regional appli-cations. By sensing the vehicle load and selecting the best shift points,this powertrain package can save up to 2% in fuel economy.

A new Precision Lubrication system represents one of the mostimportant upgrades in the Fuller Advantage Series. The systemreduces the oil churn energy losses found in traditional transmissionsby nearly 33%. With less heat being generated, the Fuller AdvantageSeries transmissions do not require a cooler and corresponding linesand fittings. The result is less preventative maintenance is requiredwhile engine fans cycle less, further reducing horsepower demand.

Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America Inc.introduces a new alternator, the Diamond PowerA200 (DP A200) for heavy-duty trucks, whichfeatures many new technologies unique toheavy-duty alternators, earning five new patents.

Key features and benefits include:• Offers the highest efficiency rating among

major 12v heavy-duty alternators in NorthAmerica, providing improved fuel economy;

• Weighs 6.8 lbs. (24% less than the leadingcompetitive alternator), for improved fuel econo-my, ease of installation and less front axle weightfor increased payload potential;

• Provides 137 amps of output at engine idlespeed;

• Features “remote-sense” and “five-wire”technology;

• Has extreme heat tolerance, exceeding allNorth American OE requirements;

• Designed to last more than 1,000,000 miles;and

• Includes three-year/unlimited mileDiamond Gard warranty.

The Diamond Power A200 requires minimal

engine horsepower to operate, making itextremely energy efficient, the maker said. Withless drag on the engine, it achieves a significantreduction in fuel consumption. It is designedand built to outlive the truck’s original owner-ship, with major advances in corrosion protec-tion, vibration resistance and heat tolerance.Battery life is extended with remote sensecapability, reduced deep cycling and by main-taining full output at high temperatures.

Now undergoing validation trials and field-testing at several OE manufacturers, both the DPA200 and DP A160 (released last year) are cur-rently available for replacement and upgradeapplications through regular dealer and inde-pendent aftermarket distribution channels in theU.S., Canada and Mexico, the company said.

These two PAD-mount, brushless, five-wirealternators are bolt-in replacements for any exist-ing alternator on all engines with the PADmount feature, which includes nearly all truck-engine combinations manufactured in NorthAmerica since 2007. Only one part number foreach alternator model ensures minimal invento-

ry requirements for the retailer.“With the DP A200, we pulled out all the stops

in the design department. It is truly an amazingmachine, yet very competitively priced. It willprovide the industry with a new state-of-the-artoption and further establish Mitsubishi Electricas a significant new player in the NorthAmerican heavy truck alternator market,” saidDave Stone, executive director at MitsubishiElectric Automotive America heavy-duty opera-tions.“ The combination of the DP A200 and DPA160 provides our customers with a productportfolio that I believe is far superior to all otherbrush and brushless alternatives availabletoday.”
