Proper spec’ing your vehicles’ wheels can be relativelysimple and straight-forward by following a manufacturer’srecommendations to achieve the longest life and perform-ance from your wheels.

The experts at Maxion Wheels, the world’s largest manu-facturer of lightweight steel wheels, suggest fleet equipmentspecifiers can make wheels a ‘non-issue’ if they’d followthese spec’ing considerations to achieve long wheel life:

• Tire size and maximum air inflation• Loads to be carried – wheel-carrying capacity• Duty cycle – linehaul, off-road, delivery stop and start• Axle pound rating• Warranty – five-year coverage and availability nation-

wide• Field service support from your wheel supplierTo keep wheels clean and provide long-life and perform-

ance, most fleets have wheels refurbished. It’s recommend-ed that fleets closely review the vendor’s refurbishing pro-

cedures emphasizing proper inspection, cleaningand re-painting of the wheels. Two key details inrefurbishment: controlling paint mil thicknessin the mounting area of the disc face andensuring paint is fully cured.

Corrosion remains a concern for fleetsoperating in harsh service environments, particularly on roads treated for snow or ice.One option to combat this severe service situ-ation is to specify wheels with premium paintfinishes.

“Pay attention to the basics,” said Maxion’sdirector of North American sales, Denny Weisend.“Proper spec’ing and maintenance will enable thewheels to last the life of the vehicle.”

Six wheel spec’ing considerations

Kenworth has unveiled the Kenworth T680 Advantage truck, which thecompany said effectively integrates aerodynamics, powertrain and elec-tronic efficiencies combined into a complete tractor/trailer package to max-imize fuel economy.

“To gain the optimum in vehicle fuel economy, the trucking industrymust view aerodynamics, powertrains, drivers and trailers in concert. Theyall must be integrated to maximize vehicle fuel efficiency,” said KevinBaney, Kenworth chief engineer. “The T680 Advantages shows the indus-try what’s possible when you integrate the total vehicle.”

A full-size Kenworth T680 Advantage tractor-trailer is available for view-ing at MATS outside the South Wing of the Kentucky Fair & ExpositionCenter, while a tractor and partial trailer are on display in Kenworth’sbooth #30305.

The Kenworth T680 Advantage is equipped with a 12.9-liter PACCARMX-13 engine. The T680 was selected as the Advantage vehicle since italready possesses a number of standard features that make it Kenworth’smost aerodynamic model ever, the truck maker said. The 2013 PACCARMX-13 is estimated to be up to 3.5% more fuel-efficient than the previous2010 PACCAR MX engine. The MX-13 engine is paired with an EatonUltraShift Plus automated manual transmission to maximize fuel efficien-cy, the maker added.

Other features include: instantaneous fuel economy feedback on thedash; an electronic speed limiter and engine idle shutdown software thatgoes hand-in-hand with the T680 Advantage’s Kenworth Idle ManagementSystem; and the Bendix Wingman Advanced System with adaptive cruiseand SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

The trailer aerodynamics complement the aerodynamics of the T680—allthe way down to details such as trailer height, tandem location and eventrailer rake. “The Utility trailer we have attached to our T680 Advantagetruck features a trailer nose fairing, side skirts and a trailer tail—all EPASmartWay-verified,” Baney said. “Combined, they can provide a signifi-cant fuel economy improvement, which will vary depending on use, roadconditions and other factors.” A Laydon nose fairing fills the gap betweenthe tractor and front of the dry van, providing an estimated 3% fuel econo-my improvement. In addition, the package includes Utility side skirts,

which have been SAE-tested to provide a 5% improvement in fuel econo-my, and the ATDynamics TrailerTail, which has been tested to providemore than a 6% improvement in fuel economy when driven at typical free-way speeds, Kenworth said.

SAF-Holland is now offering Auto-PosiLift Axle Lift technology as anoption on SAF CBX40 Tandem Axle Slider Suspension systems. Thiscombines the proven CBX PosiLift axle lift feature with a unique elec-tronic control unit (ECU) and air valve system on a tandem slider sus-pension, blending the brain and thebrawn to increase fleet efficiency, themaker said.

The CBX40 with Auto-PosiLift wasinitially developed for multi-stopbeverage distribution fleets; othervarying load fleet operations such asLTL (Less Than Truck Load), fleetsback hauling empty, and food service alsomay reap the benefits of significant fuel savings, reduced tire wear and reduced toll charges.

The combination of the CBX PosiLift feature withthe ECU and air valve system creates a lift axle withautomatic operation that complies with D.O.T. regula-tions. The ECU is pre-programmed by the trailer OEMto sense the load weight and as the trailer load weightdiminishes or increases, the system automatically rais-es or lowers the front axle of the tandem slider sus-pension without driver interaction, SAF-Holland said.

For example, as when a portion of the load has been delivered thetotal capacity of a closed tandem axle suspension may no longer berequired to carry the remaining load. This lower load capacity cansometimes amount to nearly 80% of a vehicle’s operation during the

day. Operating with the tandem suspension in the sin-gle axle configuration (front axle raised) greatlyincreases fuel efficiency, vehicle tire life, suspensioncomponent life and brake/wheel-end service intervals.

Randy Flanagan, SAF-Holland Trailer Systems direc-tor of sales and marketing, said, “The integration ofproven Auto-PosiLift technology on our highly competi-tive and industry leading SAF CBX40 SliderSuspensions is a major step forward in providing ourvarying load fleet customers with a unique systemssolutions that not only enhances the competitive posi-tion of their operation, but offers additional driver safe-ty and convenience features.”

SAF CBX40 Tandem Axle Slider Suspensions withAuto-PosiLift technology are now available throughoutNorth America from most Trailer OEMs.

FlowBelow’s TractorAeroKit offers the firstsolution for addressingthe drag-intensive areaaround the wheels ofthe tractor tandem, themaker said.

According to FlowBelow, parked trailers significantly delay anyreturn on investment for their aerodynamic products. Because tractorstypically log more miles than trailers, the Tractor AeroKit achievesbest-in-class ROI.

Independent SAE J1321 fuel consumption test results indicate that atypical long haul tractor equipped with the AeroKit can expect to saveabout $1,800 per year in fuel costs. FlowBelow claims that the cost ofthe AeroKit can be recovered in about nine months for the averagelong haul trucking fleet. Product highlights include:

• Fast and easy installation — no drilling or welding required• Instant and tool-free access to wheels• Lightweight and durable construction• Available in black or chromeThe Tractor AeroKit is on display at the FlowBelow booth. FlowBelow www.flowbelow.comBooth #11080

Bergstrom helps buyersunderstand BTU ratings

Bergstrom Inc.said it wants con-sumers to under-stand BTU ratingsand how they arecalculated in orderto empower buyersto make informeddecisions whenshopping for a no-idle system.

Ratings in theno-idle market-place currentlyrange from 3,000 BTUs to as high as 30,000 BTUs. These discrepanciesarise because there is no governing body that sets and enforces anindustry standard. As a result, some manufacturers manipulate andinflate BTU numbers to entice buyers to their products.

To help bring clarity to BTU numbers, Bergstrom conducted inde-pendent no-idle tests. “Competitors don’t exhaust the same testingprocedures and credentials we do at Bergstrom,” said Alan Leupold, director of testing and development for Bergstrom. “The BTUs weshare with our consumers accurately display how they will performwhen you are on the road. Our competitors’ numbers won’t hold up.”

Bergstrom encourages consumers to ask manufacturers how BTUevaporators are rated. According to Bergstrom, if the manufacturercan’t provide an answer, chances are they have manipulated the num-bers using one of these methods:

• Increasing air inlet temperature• Manipulating refrigerant temperature• Using blower manufacturer’s airflow stats to measure capacity • Rating performance at maximum air temperature and humidity • Neglecting to show time unit of measurementBergstrom said it wants to create an even playing field to help con-

sumers make intelligent decisions when comparing air conditioningsystems.

Itsuse is particularly efficient ifClass 8 trucks are equippedwith thrifty engines, which atlow engine speeds can pro-duce stronger torsional vibra-tions, damaging the drivelinein the long run.

Beginning this month, ZFhas been producing the tech-nology for the U.S. market in anewly opened production sec-tion at the ZF location inGainesville, Ga.

The clutch, with a 15.5 in.diameter, features high-powerZF torsional damper technolo-gy. It prevents engine-inducedrotational irregularities whichare transmitted via the clutchto the driveline. These torsion-al vibrations can cause a high-er noise and vibration level inthe vehicle and damage thedriveline. Many commercialvehicle engines, however, pro-duce higher torsional vibra-tions in the low speed range—a side effect of fuel-efficientengine design. The NGD tech-nology from ZF has the mainfunction of decoupling thesevibrations.

ZF supplies the clutchesboth with manual wear com-pensation and “Twin XTendNGD”—the latter with aclutch pressure plate thatautomatically compensateswear on the clutch plates. Asis the case with all clutchesfrom ZF, the NGD series ismade of harder steel, and thedesign of the spring seats isrobust in order to make themmore durable, according to thecompany.

New for MATS (stop by booth #62144)are Spectra Freightliner Cascadia SeriesRadiators, which feature:

• All-aluminum design• Heavy gauge tubes for superior over-

all strength• Redesigned mounting brackets for

durabilityAccording to Spectra Premium, late-

model trucks are much more demandingon the cooling system. They operate athigher temperatures and pressures, requir-ing a more robust Charge Air Cooler. Traditional Tube and Fin CAC isa standard design for most OE units and is designed to fit the manufac-turer’s cooling requirements. On heavier applications, premature fail-ures such as tube to header leaks sometimes have been observed. Thebar and plate design is usually a better option for newer trucks, as itcan withstand superior heat variations, the company noted.

The bar and plate consists of fins pressed between aluminum sheetsand fitted with a header and face bar. This stacking is brazed together, creating a single solid piece in allowing the tanks to be welded directlyto the core. The heavy gauge side bars and end caps are the reasonbehind this design’s strength and longevity. This stronger and morerobust design will contribute in reducing costs associated with warranty returns and replacements, according to the maker.

Cummins emission solutions EcoFit Liquid-onlyurea dosing systemunveiled

Following the acquisition of Hilite International’s Selective CatalyticReduction (SCR) division in July 2012, Cummins Emission Solutionsadded the EcoFit UL2 Liquid-Only Urea Dosing System to its engineered-components portfolio.

“The acquisition gave Cummins Emission Solutions the opportunity to quicklyexpand its portfolio of engineered components with a proven urea dosing technology,”said Zach Gillen, general manager—Engineered Components at Cummins EmissionSolutions. “And we believe the combination of Cummins system integration expertise, coupled with Hilite’s SCR component expertise, will allow us to better serve customersthroughout the world.”

The challenges to urea dosing are surpassed by the system’s unique dosing nozzlestrategy. The dosing nozzle provides improved oxides of nitrogen (NOx) conversionefficiency rates through urea droplet sizes unrivaled by those of competitive airless systems, the company said, adding that with droplet sizes comparable to those of air-assisted systems, the likelihood of urea droplets in the Decomposition Reactor is signif-icantly reduced. As the only liquid-only doser on the market offering freeze robust-ness, urea can remain in the system at all times, even during freeze events. Keepingurea in the system prevents crystallization and clogging, eliminates the need for powerat key-off for purging, allows quicker dosing at key-on and prevents damage to thesystem during intentional or unintentional power interruption of the vehicle.
