THE DEMAND

THE SOLUTION

The increased use of the Internet and the wide use of new high quality, bandwidth-intensive services such as VoIP and high quality video stream-ing have created a serious capacity problem for core and access network infrastructures.

In order to deliver such kinds of services, networks need to be able to support high bandwidth, low-delay and low-jitter (delay variation) transmission. This means core networks should support service

separation and service prioritization in order to transfer different kinds of traffic with different behavior aggregates. Such solutions are provided by a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) mechanism and Differential Services protocols which are used for traffic engineering and EE QoS provisioning in the core networks.

Microscan Computers Private Limited in Mumbai, one of India’s leading tel-ecom service providers of network infrastructure solutions and wide area network services, needed to find switches that would be able to meet these requirements.

After carefully surveying the options for this project, Microscan selected switches from Edge-Core and SMC Networks that would be able to provide triple play services and AAA Authentication for ISP customers using their MAC address as the credentials. The SMC6152L2, an SMC Layer 2 Fast Ether-net switch met all their security and performance requirements. In addition, this Layer 2 switching unit was chosen because it is ideal for desktop 10/100 Ethernet connectivity and wiring closet installations.

The ES4626-SFP, an Edge-Core Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet standalone switch, was also chosen because it is can be used in the distribution layer of three-tier networks and is able to provide long distance fiber connections to ag-gregate access layer switches that are dispersed in different locations. This is an excellent choice as a core switch for small enterprises as these switches

are packed with features and deliver a cost-ef-fective solution that brings continuous avail-ability, enhanced security, and advanced QoS to the edge, while maintaining simplicity of management.

The SMC6152L2 is a 48-port managed Layer 2 Fast Ethernet standalone switch, with 4 Gigabit combo (RJ-45/SFP) ports, featuring:

The ES4626-SFP is a 24-port managed Layer 3 Gigabit Ethernet standalone switch, with 16 1000BASE-X SFP ports, 8 combo GE (RJ-45/SFP) ports, and 2 10G XFP ports, featuring:

Introducing the SMC6152L2 TigerSwitchTM and ES4626-SFP Switch:

- 17.6 Gbps switching capacity - Flexible Quality of Service (QoS) and VLANs make switch ideal for triple play services - Enhanced scalability and availability features - IP clustering allows up to 32 units to be managed from a single IP address - High performance network security and management capabilities

* Please note the SMC Networks’ SMC6152L2 is currently in the process of being replaced by the equivalent Edge-Core Networks’ switch, ES3552M. All features and functions are identical as only the model name has changed.

- 88 Gbps switching capacity - IPv6 management and routing for superior performance today and tomorrow - Advanced Quality of Services (QoS) for optimal triple play performance - Range of security features including ACLs, SSH, IEEE 802.1X and RADIUS authentication - Support for AC and DC power supplies for different environmental applications
